I had MGB a week ago and all and all I feel good BUT.. when I go to sit up from laying down, stand up or even sit up straight all the way it burns about 2 inches to the left of my belly button. BAD. It feels like something is going to rip apart. I don’t have any incisions there either. Has anyone else experienced this? TIA

Finally Post op! Still in Hospital and ready to go home
TxSilverAngel posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had my surgery16 hours ago and I feel pretty good! The gas pain from the co2 they pump into you is pretty bad but surgical pain is not that bad. I'm sure it will feel a little worse in a couple days. I have walked quite a bit to get the gas to dissipate and the pain meds help. Still nothing to drink!! But my surgeon doesn't allow water to even touch my lips till later today. With that being said let me get to the things I'm glad I brought and what I wish I brought. So glad I brought my Chapstick, my iPad, and pajama pants. What I wish I brought was my own pillow.- 4 replies

I got the sleeve December 28th. Successful pre-op week long liquid diet and day before clear liquids. 10.5 lb loss Successful surgery, anesthesia hit a bit hard and I didn’t end up fully waking up until middle of the night surgery night. Began walking, could hardly sip, all normal stuff. I could immediately pick myself up and didn’t require assistance in sitting up or walking around, was just extremely tired. Three days post op I began feeling what I assumed were the dreaded gas pains dead center of my abdomen. I called my doctors office, scoured the forums for advice, nothing helped. I tried the milk of magnesia assuming I was backed up, not the case. Tried gasx bc the pain latest 3 days non stop. Couldn’t hardly move, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t walk, couldn’t sit, lay, anything. So! Fast forward to Thursday (6 days post op) and I’m balling on the phone with my doctors office pleading there’s no way this is gas. So they bump my post op appointment to the next morning if I can wait. If not, they say don’t wait to go to the ER. Next morning on Friday my mother rushes me to the office, we barely get through the door and they’re sending us to the ER next door. After many tests, hours of different pain meds that didn’t work...a ct scan shows a prominent Portal vein thrombosis. A massive and extremely painful blood clot in my chest bc of the surgery. Little pre surgery info, I’m extremely healthy. I’ve never had heart burn, acid reflux, diabetes, heart problems, any issues health wise. I’ve now been in the hospital for over a week dealing with the excruciating pain, blood thinners, 6 days of NO FOOD OR WATER, not even ice chips. Talk about torture. So, just a heads up...it’s not always gas pain. This may be super rare, which is what I’ve been told, but still...it sounds like gas pains...it still may not be. If your pain is at a 10 go to the dang hospital.

Pain While Drinking 1 Day Post Op
Liliana Arleen posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok so I'm 1 day post op and I started my liquids today , It hurts terrible that I can even sip , it hurts pretty bad to swallow . Today I could not even eat SF Jello no mater how long I chew it When it goes down hurts terribly . Does this gets better at my 2nd or 3rd day? The most that is bothering me in the chest pain , it feels so tight . I been walking and trying to sip but nothing improves it. I really hope I can drink better tomorrow . How many days does it takes for the pain when swallow even water to go away? I'm exhausted and thristy and when I sip is a nightmare!!! -
I have been in severe abdominal pain now for four hours. This is my second episode with this. I thought it was just severe gas and bloating at first, but have taken gas x and mylanta and tums. No relief. It seems to stem from left side under rib cage. Could this be an ulcer or something else. I keep praying for the pain to ease. Has anyone had this and what do I do or not do so this won't happen anymore. I plan to call dr in morning but was hoping for some advice tonight. Thanks

I am two days post Gastric Sleeve. I am wondering if anyone else has had pain after swallowing. It seems as if I swallow and there is a few second delay, and then a sharp pain @ my stomach, just below my incision line. Does this sound normal ?

1.5 weeks post op ~ Pain under left rib gage
ifishedmywish posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m 1.5 weeks post op. I’ve had no real issues so far, the surgery & healing process have been smooth sailing. I went to the movies with a friend last night, I noticed halfway through the movie that I would get a sharp pain under my left rib cage if I was to breathe deeply. It is not a steady pain, and I don’t even notice it when I breathe normally, but if I take a deep breath it starts to hurt And stops hurting when I let the breath out. Has anyone else experienced this?- 13 replies

Hi everyone I’m 3 days out. I’m curious how long that feeling of stitch pulling lasted for everyone? I know I’m going to be sore but the sharp feeling of the stitches pulling inside is so painful. Any tips or tricks? Also does jello count as a “clear liquid “?

So I have Kaiser and I have attended the first class of orientation and I’m scheduled to begin the rigorous 12 week class on Aug 5 and ending Oct 28. I meet the guidelines with my co-morbidities. I honestly cannot wait to get the classes finished. I have seen some posts where people don’t do them and others who have. I understand why we need them, I just am beyond ready for this surgery. I’m in excruciating pain daily and I’m extremely exhausted day in day out. I want it all to end and I don’t know if I can wait out the long timeframe. It seems like Dec would be the surgery timeframe based on my reading. How did y’all do it? How did y’all get through these classes? I know the light at the end of the tunnel is faint right now, I’m just anxious at this point and wish it could be the big day already. I’m beyond ready to get my life back from pain. I understand there’s going to be pain from the surgery, however, it’s temporary. I keep telling myself at this point so is all my other pain... Looking forward to a healthier lifestyle!!

3 weeks post op. Belly button incision pain
Je$$ica36 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m having pain from the incision on the right side of my belly button. Seems to hurt more when I move. Any idea what it could be? -
I’m 4 weeks post bypass and I feel like when I drink water it causes me pain. Almost feels like a terrible gas pain or a hunger pang. But it takes a few minutes to go away. It’s interfering with my hydration. I’m not sure why or what to do. Anyone go through this? Any advice?

I had a headache tonight when I came home from a date with my husband. I don't get headaches very often, but when I do, they're bad. Took some codeine. BIG mistake.. I didn't think my stomach was empty. We'd eaten out, and I took the pill with some milk. Apparently, my stomach was empty and this is not a good thing with codeine. I am currently sitting on the sofa feeling lightheaded, sweating, with a pain in my stomach that is as bad as anything I had when I had gallstones. OMG! On the plus side, my headache is gone.

I am pre op but i have a theory about pain. I watched my sister and brother in law get sleeved in Mexico and my niece get sleeved in Michigan. I have been reading through the forums. It seems to me that the difference between people who have pain and those who have little is whether or not they have a drain. A lot of doctors in the US don't use drains. I think it is because they discharge the next day. In Mexico they use drains. My niece was in terrible pain and was on morphine for over a week. My sister and brother in law had little pain and were out walking around the town the next day. They were given Tylenol. If the abdomen is full of blood and you have to wait for it to be reabsorbed there is pressure on everything. Sis and Brother in law are both doctors. They tell me that blood irritates the peritoneum, the lining of the abdomen. More pain. I also think that opiates are not a great idea. We know that they are constipating and are hard on the stomach. Again This is my theory. What do you think? I'm hoping for a discussion and I'm putting this here so people could ask for a drain before they have their surgery.

Pain in left side under rib cage,
Noel 1224 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am freshly banded, about three weeks ago. I have felt fine, now I have a really intense, almost overwhelming pain on left side mostly, but under my entire rib cage. I am feeling panicky, and in my googling venture have found some sensical, and horrifying possibilities. Please advise -
I was wondering if it is ok to take codeine guaifenesin after gastric bypass. I’m almost 2 months post op. This is the first time I’ve been sick since surgery and I can’t stop coughing. I’ve tried OTC meds and nothing is working.

I am not feeling euphoric anymore. In fact, I've experienced some tiredness that can only be relieved by long naps. I know I'm still better mentally, however, because I WANT to do things; but I'm just having to rest in between. It feels like now I am settling in for the long-term effort of making this surgery part of a successful lifestyle change. My incisions look great and the itching is subsiding. I've not had a problem with liquid intake; I judge this by light urine color. Getting the protein is a little harder because it fills me up quicker. I tend to want to drink 10 oz and then lay down; and when I do that . . . sharp pain, then Pepcid AC & Tylenol. I guess this is going to cure my habit of napping after eating. Well, today I tried Isopure Zero Carb strawberries and cream. It is light without being watery; and tasty without being overly strong. It has 50 g protein for 210 calories. I am anticipating that when I begin trying to lose weight in earnest, this product is going to be a lifesaver. Right now I am just considering myself in the process of healing, staying on liquids, and not considering weight loss a current goal. Of course, I can't wait to weigh on Monday and I hope to see a loss. I think I will because my bra (which usually is overly tight) feels comfortable now. Something I found interesting: Starbucks Doubleshot Energy White Chocolate 15 oz "fortified energy coffee drink" has 11 g protein and (only) 210 calories. I thought that was pretty cool. Who knew?

Odd pains - anyone experience this?
longhaul68 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all, I’m about 7 weeks post RNY surgery and have been getting some sharp shots of pain in certain areas of my body as I’m losing weight. The pain is mostly around the armpits down to the upper breast- burning pain shooting for a few seconds when I lean forward or twist a certain way. Another new place is the back of both arms and now a new place, near my groin. They don’t last long but they reoccur pretty regularly. I’ll definitely talk with my doctor about it but wonder if it’s a result of quick weight loss ( I’m down 50 lbs from my pre-op weight) and if anyone else has experienced something similar. I haven’t started weight training but I’m walking a fiendish amount. Thanks for any thoughts on this… -
Sleeved on 9-27 with no known problems. Follow up on the 10th showed I was dehydrated so I got two bags of Fluid and went home. 11th I was trying to get all my liquids is and after second bottle of Water I had chills so bad so I took temp and have a mild temp of 100.5 (230 pm). By 315 my temp was up to 102.8 so I called Dr and they asked me to come in. 2 more bags of fluid later my temp was not down and my heart rate was staying steady at 114-116 so they admitted me to hospital. Catscan revealed an air pocket outside the stomach that fluids were going into and then back. Now I have a picc line for nutrition/hydration and standing by to see if it will heal itself. This whole time I was thinking I'd be here a couple days max but it is sounding like a long term deal from everything I am reading, please pray for improvement on next Catscan I don't want to go thru another surgery if at all possible!

Hey there, I’m new to this forum. My name’s Alexa and I’m 22 years old. I just had my duodenal switch surgery on March 26th of this year so I’m fresh out of surgery. I’m currently at home but I keep freaking myself out. Along with the switch, my doctor also fixed a hiatal hernia that I had and removed my gallbladder because it was enflamed and kind of “stuck” to my duodenum (I may be wrong about this part, I was still in a daze when the doctor told me). While being at home, I’ve noticed that around one of my 6 scars on my mid-right stomach it is very bruised and hurts the most. I also have a large “dent” in that spot now. I’ve been telling myself that it’s just from my gallbladder being removed and I really hope it is just that. On top of that, I keep involuntarily taking in sharp breaths. I think they’re like hiccups or small yawns but it almost feels like I’m trying to burp but my body doesn’t know how. I’ve also been having a bit of pain when swallowing. These things I’m telling myself are from my hiatal hernia being fixed. I think a nurse also told me that’s what it was as well, but it’s really hard to get down my fluids and medications. Again, I’m probably just freaking myself out but I’d like some input. Are these things normal? Should I be concerned? Thank you in advance!! -Alexa

I am currently taking a liquid pain killer but after 5 days I am sick of the taste. Any suggestions? I haven't tried anything in pill form, its all been chewable (Multi Vitamin) ( Chewable Calcium) Etc. Does anyone have any problems taking pills? Has anyone tried Vicodin or something less strong? I'm debating if the pain is worth not taking the medicine but sometimes it does get to be really bad, especially when I'm trying to get out of bed.. When I am up, the pain only seems to be on the left side where the largest incision is and I've noticed pain in my lower back and shoulders. My nutritionist did mention gas pains up in the shoulders and to move around alot, which I've been doing. Not sure what is causing the lower back pain. Any suggestions are helpful, I check here often to see what others are trying. I still seem to be swollen around the incision so I know it will take time for me to notice if I've lost any weight. Patience I've learned over the years...lol Thank you for any advice

i am nearly two weeks out from having surgery and I'm so incredibly unhappy!! I'll be the first to say I was one of the ones who scoffed at the posts where people seemed unhappy....surely this wouldn't happen to me! Surely I would be in the more populus group of those thrilled with surgery. I am on e the smaller side when it comes to bariatric patients so I thought I'd recover easily and would be on my way to skinnyville.....ummmm no... After surgery pain was excruciating...I mean I have dealt with pain in my life....but this is a new level. The pain management people came in time and again asking me on a scale of one to ten and my answer was always the same 10+++++. The pain medication got stronger and even morphine and other drugs couldn't even take the edge off. I was in pain like this for 3 days!! I could barely get a sim of water in and I was dry heaving constantly. It was horrible! Finally the pain subsided from the surgery but now I have this constant pain in my back...upper to righthand side. Feels almost like food is stuck there. Went down wrong hole and I desperately wanna wash that chunk of food down....but guess what? I didn't eat any food and drinking makes that pain worse. Please anyone know what this pain is? Will it ever go away and will I be in pain every time i eat for the rest of my life? Sorry to be so dramatic, but it seriously doesn't feel like it's ever going to go away. I am soooooooooo tired. Exhausted beyond belief....no matter how much protein or vitamins nothing helps...I have a business and I really need some energy. My business is suffering. And to top it all off i lost 20 lbs in 4 days, great right? Well I honestly believe most of this was just water weight and weight dropping off from my last meal or two....I have not dropped a single lb in over a week now. My stomach is swelled and I'm not even eating...only liquids....sugar free high protein liquids. I even gained a lb! I used to eatbso much food, I'm talking 5000 a day and my weight went up a lb a month maybe...now I'm drinking 300 calories a day and nothing!! I'm going crazy!! This is like a nightmare I can't wake from!! I keep hoping I will wake up....have money in my bank account, be able to eat food...cause man the cravings don't go away and they are horrible!! I MAY NOT BE HUNGRY BUT MY MIND WANTS FOOD MORE THAN I HAVE EVER BEFORE....IF YOU USE FOOD FOR PLEASURE AND IT IS MORE OF A MENTAL THING FOR YOU...THIS SURGERY MAY NOT HELP U AT ALL! I just want my body back and I know I never can! It's so weird knowing life will never be the same.

I underwent VSG on 1/24/19. I also had a large hiatal hernia repaired at the same time. I have been feeling much better in the last week or so, especially during the day. Other than being somewhat fatigued, I feel fine while I’m up and around. For the last 2-3 nights, though, I toss and turn with constant middle-back and side pain. It’s not a burning/stinging pain or anything. It’s more of a really strong ache. Reminds me of a “flu backache” for anyone familiar with that. It doesn’t matter which position I lie in, it’s constant. Has anyone else experienced this? What in the world is causing it? I have no other adverse symptoms at this point.
