  1. Hi all. I am not very active here, but I am struggling lately and just have a couple of questions. I started back to university in January, which I'm so glad I was able to, but it has been exhausting and I don't think it really should be. I am also from Texas, so we are still going through some pretty awful stuff at the moment. My family (5 kids, my husband, and I) made it out unscathed for the most part and got very lucky we only lost power for about 8 hours. I was pretty scared of being without power so we risked travel on icy highways to travel to my mom's house since she has a generator. We left to come back home because I was afraid of our pipes bursting and the animals were alone, and unfortunately on the way home we were rear-ended due to some black ice. We are okay and it's probably all just cosmetic damage, but we'll need our entire bumper replaced. It has been so extremely stressful, to say the very least. We, fortunately, had power back when we came home and our pipes did okay through the freezing weather. I have been struggling with fatigue. My doctor has suspected an autoimmune issue for a while (years), and I finally saw my rheumatologist after an entire year of waiting. Well, my blood work shows markers so when I go back I'm sure there will be more tests. I do have hypothyroidism and my T3 is low (other thyroid levels within normal ranges), but I have never been tested for Hashimoto's, I was just put on Levothyroxine and have been on it since 2011. My vitamins are okay as far as I can see. I know I'm also probably dehydrated because I still struggle with eating and drinking properly. My question I suppose really is, does anyone here have autoimmune diseases who had the bariatric surgery, and did you/do you struggle still with fatigue? I am nearly 7 months post-op, so I was hoping to see an increase in energy levels, but that's just not happening. I am just always lethargic with little energy. I will add, I do not sleep a solid 8 hours due to pain, and I do know that that could also be making things worse. I would just like anyone's insight/suggestions/experience with this sort of thing. Did you improve with treatment? How long did it take to see/feel improvements? Thanks in advance.
  2. Hello, new to the forum. I am 54 years old and on day 4 of my 2 week pre op Clear luquid diet. Not too bad so far. I was wondering if there are others who have autoimmune diseases and what was your experiences with weightloss surgery? Sent from my SM-G935V using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. Thx for allowing me to join. I had surgery 2014 @200lb. Today, 5yrs later, weighing in 50 HEAVIER than surgery date. I have MANY autoimmune diseases-no cure, but steroids are used to get under control. One of the diseases actually attacks my thyroid gland, causing hypothyroidism (Hashimoto Disease). Has anyone else had this crazy roller coaster ride?!? Besides loosing my sanity, I’m about to give up on losing anymore. I eat VERY healthy, but I had to STOP walking bc the bones & joints in my feet are wearing down and breaking down. Autoimmune diseases are just the opposite of a healthy immune system. Healthy-immune system attacks any bacteria, infections and destroys it. Autoimmune-My immune system is wired backwards-immune system sees HEALTHY tissue/organs as “bad stuff” and attacks healthy tissue/organs instead. (Heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, bladder, skin, hair, stomach, etc.) Any pointers from anyone with autoimmune diseases also trying to get back to a healthy weight? I have refused to take anymore steroids period. I’m afraid the damage is done to my cervical & lumbar spine as well as the thyroid. Trying to regulate thyroid w/meds for over 5yrs. I’m desperate and need LOTS OF PRAYER. I’m so tired of being tired & frumpy as well as sick all the time. Plz help😩
  4. I have had my band for almost 20 years. Aside from a port replacement 6 years ago, I have been very happy. i reached my goal weight , all good. about a year ago I developed odd neurological/ autoimmune symptoms. Vision, dizzy , tired, confusion, rash etc then two weeks ago, my band slipped, I had gained about 15 pounds in the last 6 months. After 7 days of total restriction ( no food or water getting through) my port was removed in by emergency surgery, the band will be removed in a week or two. My question is , are the two issues related ? I have been to many docs about my neuro / immune symptoms and they are baffled . It seems so odd my band would do this at the same time ?
  5. Anyone else on Humira, Methotrexate & steroids? I'm having surgery 5/31 & I have to come off all my meds 2 weeks prior. I'm wondering how long the doctor will keep me off them.
  6. Has your WLS helped with autoimmune disease or endocrine issues? I am asking specifically about Hashimotos, adrenal insufficiency, hypothyroid?
  7. Hi, I would like to know if anyone had the VSG done that have any autoimmune diseases. If so did you have any setbacks, complications or relapses? Thanks? Sent from my SM-T217S using the BariatricPal App
  8. Has anyone on here have any autoimmune disorder and had wls? I am pre-op and also have lupus. My first appt.with my surgeon is next month and I was wandering about anyones experience with the two. Sent from my SCH-R960 using the BariatricPal App
  9. Is anyone out there suffering from an autoimmune disease? If so, has the disease affected your weight loss journey? How so? I have a genetic autoimmune disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis. My overactive immune system attacks my spine, large joints, and eyes among other things. I got this surgery because of AS. I know it won't cure my AS, but I welcome any measure that will reduce the pressure on my spine. Ways my weight loss journey has been affected: AS causes chronic fatigue. Couple that with the fatigue we all feel following WLS, and it's a bear. I'm limited to two forms of exercise: walking and swimming. No weight training. Since muscle burns fat, that's a bummer. But I'm still hopeful. I've lost 36 lbs (pre op and post op combined, height 5'1, surgery Feb 25). I'm at a stall at the moment, and I would love to hit the gym with gusto. My body and mind/will are not in sync. I would love to hear from those with similar battles. Tell me all of this gets better? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  10. I've been a silent stalker in this site on and off for about a year. I started seriously considering WLS for about a couple of years but just recently made the decision that it's the right thing for me. I went into this process thinking that I would only consider the lap band but after the info session and consult with my surgeon I've decided that the sleeve is the best option for me. I have my psych eval and first appointment with the nutritionist on March 5. I'm a single mom to a beautiful 3 year old daughter and also have multiple sclerosis, on addition to being morbidly obese. I'm starting this journey for myself, but also my daughter. I need to be the positive influence in her life that she deserves. I find these forums so helpful and insightful. I have learned that I'm not alone in my fears that ending my relationship with food and that it's possible but takes hard work. I'm ready for this and know I will do it. Just wondering - anyone else going thru this with MS or other autoimmune diseases? Did it affect you? Looking forward to making new friends and finding support on my journey, those with or without autoimmune issues.
  11. Looking for other people with lupus or autoimmune diseases so swap stories with

  12. I there! I just figured out how to create a support group for autoimmune sleevers. If several of us join and start posting there, we might be able to create a place for those of us with RA, psoriatric arthritis, hashimotos, lupus, SA, etc. I set it to public so anyone can join. Pls join if this pertains to you, and invite your forum friends as well. I'm a support group creation virgin so be gentle with me if I screwed it up. Here's the link (I hope!) http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/groups/show/269-autoimmune-sleevers/
  13. Hi yáll! I'm 61 years too young and am pre-op. They haven't selected a date yet BUT I am near the end of my long list of "to do's." I have MCTD (Mixed Connective Tissue Disease), w/Lupus, RA. Also, MS, asthma, Diabetes (type 2), FM, Hypothyroidism, Hypertension, and am in a wheelchair with spine problems (7 herniations, at last count). This is to name a few. Last time I was hospitalized was Nov. 2012 with pneumonia. The year prior had been hospitalized 6 times with pneumonia!! So right now I'm doing GREAT! Thing is, I have gained a lot of weight just since the last time I was hospitalized. Around 60 lbs. Most of the reason for this is lack of activity due to pain issues and of course, over-eating. Most of my life, up until 14 years ago when I became ill, was spent as a person with no weight issues. I was extremely active and strong. Had 5 kids, a job and 3 horses and blah, blah, blah. Now I am totally disabled. Was wondering if there are any of you out there with health issues who have or plan to have the VSG? How are you doing and what to expect? Am so happy to have found this group! God Bless ALL!! Always, cloud
  14. I'm having surgery July 2013 would like to hear from those of you who have already had a vSG and have an autoimmune disease or who are about to embark on my same journey. how does the symptoms of joint pain and fatigue help? I talk about this on my you tube journey.
  15. I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. This causes me pain each day, and makes exercise for weight loss (I have always had to do major workouts to lose consistently) very difficult. I have begun the process to be sleeved by September. Anyone else done this procedure with an autoimmune disease? How has it improved or worsened the symptoms? My rheumatologist tells me that the weight loss will help the medications work better (at lower doses), and my surgeon says they deal with AI issues regularly. He did say he would not put in the band, because that can exacerbate symptoms. Thanks in advance! Tina San Antonio, Texas
  16. Per Allergan's website for medical professionals. http://www.lapband.com/hcp/en/risk_information/ Before encouraging someone with an autoimmune disorder to get Lapband, please read the contraindications at the link above. There are many unscrupulous band mills out there that will ignore the contraindications, take the money and leave the pt with a lifetime of issues to deal with. Here's a link to a list of autoimmune diseases: http://womenshealth.gov/publications/our-publications/fact-sheet/autoimmune-diseases.cfm

  18. I have a question requarding autoimmune disorders and lapband. I found out from Alergan that the lapband is not for people with autoimmune disorders. I have psorisis a skin condition (it's autoimmune). I had my first dr. visit and nothing was mentioned, it was in the forms I filled out, but I did not mention anything cause I did not know yet. I know I still need to talk to my Dr. but I was just curious if anyone happen to know anything or maybe had the procedure and has psorisis or something similar

  20. What adjustments did you make to your medications before and after surgery? How has your weight loss affected your symptoms. I have rheumatoid arthritis and hoping weightloss will help my joints. Thanks!
  21. Hello all. So I have Lupis as well as Fibromyalgia! I have been trying not to think of it in regards to my surgery. However, in the back of my mind, there is the fear that having surgery will cause a flare up! I had to go off of my Plaquinil for a month, until after my surgery, which is July 10th. Its been about two weeks and I've been good until last night!!! I could feel the rain coming, my joints have been aching. And my hips are absolutely killing me! Like to the point of tears, and it takes a LOT to make me cry. My hands and arms/elbows are hurting not from typing, I have to keep stopping. I stopped taking the Plaquinil once before for a week, and it felt like I hit a wall going 90mph! That time it affected my hands and elbows and shoulders first, then I was curled up in the fetal position in so much pain I could barely think! And now its started again! Calling the doctor in the morning. And I guess they will increase pain meds, but I have done that for the last two nights and it hasn't helped! And I can't even take motrin! I want to pull my hair out! I am afraid if the increase my meds now, will they be able to control my pain after surgery? I have two little boys to take care of!! I will be staying at my parents after surgery for the first two weeks, but I can't let them do everything! My guys can wear the most entergetic people out! Getting a little upset about this tonight! I told my surgeon that nothing about the surgery scared me at all, the only thing that scared me was coming off my Plaquinil! And he said "for good reason"! AAAHHHHHHHH anyone else dealing with these issues? I could really use some support! Can't wait to get it over with and go back on my meds!!!!! And scared they will try to put me back on steroids, which have contributed to my weight gain over the last two years! Hurting, nervous, upset!
  22. Hi All, Just curious if there are any other sleevers, future or sleeved, that have RA or similar health issues. I have Rheumatoid arthritis and 2011 was a horrible year for me. Lots of pain and lots of health issues. Anyhow, just looking to share the experiences. Odee
  23. Wondering if any of you have autoimmune hepatitis and have been banded? Was on the phone with Bariatric nurse and when I mentioned I have autoimmune hepatitis she indicated I may not be a candidate for the band. That my body may reject it or I'd have a greater risk of infections. I've had HBP and high cholesterol for years but the autoimmune disease for only about 3 years. It has been under control for over 2 years and I take a very mild dose of immune suppressent. My liver doctor indicated I need to be very careful not to develop diabetes and a large weight loss would help to prevent that. I mentioned the band and he was for it, said he'd not seen many complications from bands at all. Told him I'd been trying to figure out how to pay for one since I'm self pay, But I didn't specifically ask him if I'd be a candidate for it with my autoimmune disease. I feel like I've had the rug pulled out from under me.:smile2: I had made up my mind that I had to have this tool to get control of my weight problem to be healthier and be here for my young children. I had even figured out a way to pay for the surgery and now I'm scared it might not even be an option...:tt2::sad::crying:
  24. Hi, I'm a 28 year old male with a Realize Band. I was banded in Nov. 2009 (weighed 274) and now weigh approx. 222. I lost about 12 pounds from the initial liquid diet, and the rest of the weight loss has been from dysphagia that has been occurring with no fill in the band. I've lost about 35 pounds over the last couple months. I had a bit of fill toward the beginning (a few CCs), but that wasn't enough to cause much restriction. In the early summer, when my left sternocleidomastoid (neck muscle) became inflamed, I had my fill emptied. Most of my weight loss has occurred since that time. Here are my symptoms: -Neck muscle (sternocleidomastoid) inflamed and hurting -Pain in knees and elbows...sometimes in various other bones/muscles/joints -Pain in various places in my abdomen -Dysphagia (hard to swallow even a couple bites of soft-serve ice cream...have to gag myself to get it out) -ears hurt (have already been checked for ear infection; there is none) -often have back pain -Unusually dark urine -heart stometimes feels like it starts beating too fast -Blood pressure has been all over the map lately -Massive headaches I've recently had an upper GI. Also CT scans of my neck, pelvis and abdomen. I've also had an x-ray of my chest. Everything has came back normal. I'm in so much pain that I typically don't want to get out of bed. I'm a college senior, but am not taking classes right now because of this. I almost blew my near 4.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) due to taking classes this summer. I'm concerned that I have scleroderma and will die in my 20's or 30's due to complications related to that. They say not to assume the worst, etc., etc., but my symptoms do seem to match up with scleroderma (AKA systemic sclerosis). I've also read that even though much more women have it than men, more men die from it. I hope that I haven't ended my life before it even starts, but we shall see. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Has anyone here been diagnosed with autoimmune disease(s) as a result of the procedure? I have an appt. w/ a rheumatologist on the 1st. Regards, David
  25. Does anyone here suffer from psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, rhuematoid arthritis, etc? What do you take for your arthritis pain that does not hurt your stomach? Is anyone on MTX or celebrex or anything like that? I'm fishing for suggestions on medications that don't cause stomach problems. I wouldn't want to burn a hole in my pouch from medications sitting in it.
