  3. I have been on iron supplements for several days because my hemoglobin is only 10.1, and it needs to be higher prior to surgery. The supplements are making me miserable. I have irritable bowel syndrome and they are giving me a lot of gas, gas pains and pretty bad diarrhea. Does anyone have any recommendations for a different brand or formulation? I am just taking vegetarian tablets from CVS.

    Per-op Day 1

Oh nooo! It will get easier, I promise! Especially if you can eat some real foods, not just liquids. I went vegetarian for two years; I started because I wanted to impress a boyfriend (lolol) and so it was initially really hard to start and ignore all the delicious foods I was used to eating. Eventually as I got rid of all the stuff I couldn't eat in my house and only bought the right foods/frequented the right restaurants, it got so easy I never had to think about it. Even smelling meat didn't make me want it, and I bet it gets like that with non-doctor-diet foods for you. It's gonna be okay!

    15 DAYS POSTOP FOLLOWUP

I do have unflavored protein, so I plan to add that to any cream soup I may have. I am a vegetarian so in addition to being unable to tolerate sweets, I am unable to tolerate anything with an animal flavor so the chicken soup is out. I flew over to the site to order the cheese sauce because that is something I would eat absolutely and it's out of season and out of stock. I am so desperate that I emailed them begging for the opportunity to purchase it now because I simply can not wait until October! Thanks for your suggestions! Sent from my iPhone using VST
  6. I haven't tried altering how I eat. I have seen some reports, but I'm already pretty low carb and eat very little gluten. Going vegetarian would be a strain for me. I really rely on the solid Protein to fill me up and keep me full. And def not vegan. I love my greek yogurt. Lynda
  7. I am a vegetarian, and I love to do lentils (cheap and high in protein) - I have found several great recipes using lentils in chilis and soups. Eggs are also good. My favorite protein drinks are the American Bariatrics fruit drinks (taste like Crystal Light or Koolaid) and the AB cappuccinos (which I mix with my coffee). Another favorite powerful protein combo is a vanilla Greek Yogurt mixed with some PB2 - Peanut Butter Powder. Delicious and high in protein!

    June 2013 Sleevers GROUP

I'm on day 5 and doing well. I'm so glad I'm off that Isopure. Ugh! It tasted ok, but the heartburn was insane! I'm back to my Protein shakes. I use Pure Protein. The 1st time I had some veggie broth (I'm a vegetarian) I wanted to cry, it tasted so good. I made some sugar free chocolate pudding w/ almond milk. Didn't set up the best, but it's GOOD! I'm also able to tolerate the Butternut Squash Soup from Trader Joe's. I've been introducing one new thing at a time to see what I don't tolerate. So far, so good. I feel like my full time job is making sure I get all my fluids in. Sip, sip, sip, sip. Yesterday was my best day so far. I got all the protein (60g) and 54oz of fluids (supposed to do 64oz). Every day seems a little better. Well, I better get another walk in. Take care and blessings to all who have surgery tomorrow! You'll be in my thoughts and prayers.
  11. I am a march 2013 sleeved. I had neck surgery Nov.2012 and the sleeve four months later. I could not work out becuase I am still recovering from the neck surgery. Then two weeks ago I began to fall and found out that my lower spine had a cyst and I needed surgery again. Two weeks post op and now on a walker. I feel that I am not losing weight because I cannot work out. My pre- op weight was 293. I am now 243 lbs. I don't know if that is normal. I can't work out and I am a vegetarian. I can't find a protein powder that I like. I am only getting about 20 grams of protein in. Any suggestions?

This seems like a lot of food

Thoughts: Eat very slowly & start with your protein. Odds are you won't get through even all your protein. If you do, eat a little veggie. Yes, eventually you will be able to eat all that at once. I am 6 months out & a vegetarian. So, my meal plan varies a little from yours. Your listed breakfast is something I would eat & I don't think that I could handle that much until just recently.

    Are you vegetarian?

Thank you all for your comments. I felt best when I was eating a low sugar vegan diet and I am happy to hear you say it is possible. Curious, have any of you read The China Study. Interesting stuff. Hathery, what did you nutritionist think if your being vegetarian with a sleeve? Did she think it would hinder your weight loss. There should be a thread for vegetarians.

    I'm vegetarian. 15 years.

    2 More Days!

Same for me with eating LITTLE but BAD! I don't really eat often but everything I love is bad for me: Bread, Doritos, Taco Bell, Mexican, ANY Fried FOOD. I've been a vegetarian for 15 months and I still eat unhealthy foods. Ugh!

    Are you vegetarian?

Congratulations on making a fantastic choice for your body, the animals and the planet! I work at being vegan all the time, but slip up and have dairy pretty often, too. I was wondering if I could do vegetarian or vegan post-surgery, and I'm glad to hear it's possible! Did you ever use Protein powder? If so, what kind? I know Vega is vegan, and if you get the natural flavour, it's not very sweet. I'm hoping it will work for me when I need it!
  17. The foods and supplements they offer today are just amazing, some of them. I like the idea of natural unprocessed foods, so I personally stay away from certain bars and supplements. I am also into the free-range, grass fed, beef. I don't think I can ever remember having a better burger (sorry vegetarians). I don't have a problem with eating meat, so long as it is harvested/raised humanly. I am also a strong supporter of hunting (which I don't personally do) for food, humanly. The paleo diet is just great which it seems I am inadvertently doing. I don't see how you could go wrong on that. I know the Dukan diet discusses Ketones, which sounds interesting for reseting your metabolism. In fact, that is exactly what it's suppose to do. I just can't get around eating the foods they tell you to eat, all the time. Does anybody have any other thought's on "resetting" your metabolism? I am mostly interested in chinese herbs? Brands? Specific herbs and/or blends of herbs?

    What ya eating tonight?

Wow... I had 2 mini vegetarian meatballs with a low sugar, low carb spagetti sauce with a small shake of Parmesan cheese. Very good but filling !!

    Tofu & shiritaki noodles?

Can and when can I eat them? Is that a vegetable or a Protein? I'm 3 weeks post op. Just trying to be creative with meals. I'm not a vegetarian, I like variety. Thanks Amanda
  20. who paid the surgeon for your surgery bottom line? i do get it, you dont thank you very much. im done arguing with you. you have your mind set on the fact that your employer took care of your WLS and not the insurance company; then you come on here bad mouthing insurance companies for not taking care of their policy holders when they took care of you. that is a hypocrite. youre like the self-proclaimed vegetarian who loves BLT sandwiches. nuff's said from me

    1st pureed meal

ricotta cheese with some tomato sauce, grated cheese, and mushed up vegetarian "meat" balls (miniscule amounts of everything of course)! and refried beans with cheese. And pureed vegan bean soup. I forget which one I had first, but those were all within the first few days!
  22. My doctor has me taking the B12 sublingual every day. I took it before surgery, too, bc I'm a vegetarian. I think it's usually recommended every day? Your doctor can give you a shot if you don't want to give a shot yourself or take the vitamin.

    Hunger and dieting

Honestly, sometimes I can't tell the difference between head hunger(emotional?), real hunger(what is that? Empty stomach? Many here eat so little, I would think we could experience real hunger a lot of the time!)and perhaps other kinds of hunger....craving some nutrient for a good reason...carb or more likely, high glycemic index food addiction.. Thats the one that gets me... if I eat more high glycemic index foods, I crave more. This was my prob in the past, pre surgery as well... having the sleeve is def an advantage, but those sliders go down pretty easy and in quantity if allowed. I have always eaten lower, but not low carb for the past 28 months, sometimes being good with the glycemic index...sometimes not. I had a gaining spurt at around 18-24 months, then got it under control by upping my exercise and mostly being more accountable for what I was eating. I have tried a few different approaches since the first of this year...eating more, tracking my energy expenditure with fitbit/myfitnesspal.... and managed to lose 5 of the gained pounds...this week I decided to eat under the Vegetarian/southbeach stage one program...(REALLY struggeled to get started on that...I didn't want to cut the bread and such...) which is a low glycemic index and higher Protein plan...and I just dropped 1 1/2 pounds the first day..., know its Water, but happy to see a different number. I am making this change because I have noticed increased hunger, and when I used this plan years ago, I felt a huge relief from hunger I had never felt before. After one day, I have very little hunger and it is easy to tell when I am wanting to eat for the insulin rush. That is only after one day. Here is my nutrition breakdown for the day yesterday if you are interested.
  25. I prepack homemade beans (I use toddler-sized plastic containers), fresh cilantro to top the beans or sometimes homemade salsa, Greek yogurt, 100-calorie packs of almonds (I'm 4 months out), babybel lite cheese or Laughing Cow soft cheese, cheese sticks, apples or berries, veggie strips (usually red pepper or cucumbers), salads, yogurt with protein powder added, protein bars for emergencies (only eat half), vegetarian chili... I'm a vegetarian btw.
