Looking for a surgery buddy

Hi, I am also a band to sleeve revision post op 6 days. I am amazed at how different things are instantly with the sleeve and am very excited about whats to come. -
OK, so my husband has jumped through all the hoops and has received approval for the sleeve. His date is May 2! Yay for him! Now, I was just submitted yesterday for a band-to-sleeve revision. I am praying I am approved too. Assuming I AM approved and the doctor's office doesn't drop any more last minute surprises at me (that's another story!), do you think our surgeries spaced out 2-3 weeks apart is a good amount of time? Will hubby feel up to taking care of me by then? Time is of the essence right now. My daughter is getting married in August and I have to buy a dress and travel out of state! I need to start losing weight ASAP lol!

For those who had band to sleeve in one surgery..

I voluntarily unfilled my band 4 weeks before my revision. When Dr Garcia got in there, he said everything looked great and there was NO irritation (which is what I did it for...NO irritation) I was then sleeved right after he removed it -
For those who had band to sleeve in one surgery..

Hello everyone, I went to visit my new surgeon (I'm Kaiser now) to discuss my lap band slipping. I was thinking we could just take out a little saline and see what happens. Never heard of the sleeve before today but when he discussed this option while taking out my band at the same time- I immediately knew it was the right decision. My band has been a total nightmare. The group who performed my band surgery pretty much deserted me after my operation. Kaiser has been a dream come true for me. There were things about the band I was never told- like most people get it out about 2-5 years later and almost nobody has it in after 10 years. I was led to believe this band stayed in forever. I also thought it was going to be a simple surgery. Wrong. I have been hospitalized so many times for problems. I faint after I eat sometimes because its pushing up again my Vagal nerve. And its been too tight for months- finally after months of vomiting/getting food stuck constantly/and slime issues- it slipped. Thank God, because it slipped I pay for nothing- my insurance will cover this as well as my revision to the sleeve. I am so excited to have my surgery June 28th. It is so helpful to read all your comments and stories. Today my surgeon removed almost all of the saline explaining it helps to reduce any swelling to make surgery and revision easier. And I am so happy to NEVER have to get a fill or have this port accessed again. Yippee! -

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm very excited to finally do something permanent. One of the selling points for me about getting the band in the first place was that it was reversible. What a fallacy that was. And not only that, who wants to reverse back to being fat? Was I going to wake up one day and say I'm tired of being thin, I miss being fat? Of course not. Now that I have this band I am miserable. Lost 2 jobs due to being out sick too long. All this for 35 pounds lost? Anyhow I am so grateful that I can have a revision to the sleeve when my band is taken out. Hopefully. I look forward to a permanent solution rather than the roller coaster ride called Lap Band. -

My doctor will be taking out the fluid months before surgery. I have had chronic heartburn for three plus years and need the esophagus to heal prior to revision surgery. -

Hello! Band revision to sleeve 4 days ago. My dr did at the same time but I know other drs require it to be done in 2 surgeries. No, didn't take fills out beforehand. My surgery was a piece of cake... Seemed easier than the band surgery years ago. -
Freaking out...what if he can't get to my port again?
travelinsnorkel posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some of you may have read my thread about going to get unfilled and how the doc wasn't able to access the port. He said it wasn't flipped, but has some scarring over the rubber part and might have been a little bruised from my fill the week before. He basically sent me on my way still on a mostly liquid diet. I asked, what if I really need an unfill and you can't find it again? He said that worse comes to worse he will do it at the hospital under xray. I am fine with that. Heck, I will pay the extra to avoid feeling like a pin cushion! What I'm more worried about is him not being able to find the port by hand. Is there something wrong with it? Is it in the process of flipping? I work out a lot, have I done something? I guess that I like concrete answers and the doc didn't really give me a reason why he couldn't find the port that was definitely the answer so I'm kind of freaking out. I walked out of the office bawling. I'm a worrier by nature so I'm thinking, port revision, band slippage because I'm too tight and can't keep downanything but liquids and some mushies. I just feel like things are out of control. I behaved myself, but when I went to the grocery store I really wanted to buy some ice cream and other goodies that I could get past the band and that would actually taste like something! I didn't do it though. I am so sick of liquids and mushies a week out from my overfill and now I have to do this another week! I feel really tired when I work out and I am losing my ambition. I guess if I don't feel relief by the end of the week, I will have to go back and try to get it unfilled again and see if I need the xray. Has anyone else had it happen where their doc can't find their port? -
All I can say is that it gets better. I had revision surgery from lap-band to RNY on April 29th. First 3-4 weeks was not great at all. Everything I ate made me feel sick. But you can get thru it. I decided pre-surgery that I wouldn't weigh myself more than once a week. And I've pretty much stuck to that and it really helps because you are better able to see the results.

Hi All, Having a revision from the sleeve to by-pass on an emergency basis on Monday due to GERD. I live several hours from the hospital so my surgeon wants me to stay for couple of days in a hotel. Started packing for the hospital and have been so preoccupied that it suddenly occurred to me I will need to bring food. Not Snacks this time LOL! I will have a fridge but not a freezer and also a microwave. Can anyone here suggest what to take/buy that will help with me those first few days. I will have to bring a cooler to keep things cold on the day of surgery. Thanks for your help.

Help with decision!:)

85% of people who get the Lapband later have a revision to the Sleeve. Research the statistics and they will tell you why the sleeve is a better choice. -
Help with decision!:)

Hi, I'm no expert but my doc says he won't put any more bands in. He does bypass or sleeve only. Says its because he's done too many band to sleeve revisions over the years. -
Has Anyone Had a Second Sleeve?
Deactivatedfatgal replied to SoCalLeslie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes I have heard of quite a few people doing a sleeve to sleeve revision due to no weight loss or over eating and truly expanding it. YouTube has videos of it. I personally wouldn't want to redo anything, get strict and get back on track! Gl to you. -

Malaika replied to Mirandajanaye's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Does your insurance cover the sleeve? The sleeve reduces the size of your stomach; however leaves the pylori, so you don't have malabsorption. When I went to my WLS Seminar, the surgeon presented all 3 options - band, sleeve and RNY. He said that if he were in the position of having to have WLS he would definitely go with the sleeve -- it was the "newest bad boy on the block." I have done a lot of reserach and inasmuch as I am self-pay regardless of my decision, I have chosen to go with the sleeve. My surgery date is 6/12/09. If you read the threads on the forum under Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy you can get alot of information ... there are several very knowledgable peoople who have had the sleeve - either virgin sleevers or band to sleeve revision. If you are not 100% sure about which surgery you want, don't proceed until you are. Good luck. -

Pre-op diet starts tomorrow
lisalisalisa replied to bb00024's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Make sure that you have protein shakes that you can drink and don't hate. They go a super long way to keep you from being hungry during that time. The hardest part for me, and really, it still is, is my mouth feels yucky from not eating. Have popsicles, they are very soothing! Broth tastes good when you aren't eating! The biggest thing I'd suggest though is that you focus on the goal. You fought so hard to get this revision, do not blow it by cheating on the diet! You dont want to give insurance any excuse to back out. My biggest fear was the surgeon would go in, my liver would be too big and he'd close me up without doing the bypass. It kept me honest lol. Good luck and if you are struggling, come on here and talk about it! -
I've been banded for almost 4 years. I have experienced being too tight. It is not a great feeling. I had my last fill in Jan 2013 and since then, I had 3 unfills. I still could not eat or drink anything. X-rays on July 31st 2013 showed that my band had slipped 3 inches. My doctor said it was from being too tight for too long. I had to have emergency revision surgery. I don't wish this on anyone. Please take it easy and go for small fills.

BCBSTX requirements for Lap band to sleeve conversion

It will definitely depend on your insurance. In my case since it was a revision I only had to do 3 months, but yet again they requires a psych eval. -

Revision From Band To Sleeve With Cigna Insurance
bmooney364 replied to pegsue's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have Cigna and have been approved. I think all you have to have is medical necessity. I did not have to do the psyche eval or much else. My band had slipped and I have gastritis and esophagitis. Pain etc. Wt gain due to fluid removed from band. It took longer to get the Dr. office to send the info to the ins. co than it did for Cigna approval. So far Cigna rocks. I called to see if they had my paper work and I was told they review the request within a day or 2. Revision is totally different from a new surgery because you had to have all that stuff for a lapband and there is really no need to do it all again. Waste of everyone's time and money. Good luck to you. Hopefully you can get approved right away. -
Revision From Band To Sleeve With Cigna Insurance
pegsue posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was wondering if anyone knew does Cigna require a revision to do a Psych. Eval. before approving? When I read the policy requirements for revision it did not say anything about it . The patient advocate told me I needed that before she could file but after reviewing the requirements for revision that is not mentioned? I made an appointment but can't get in until July 30th so long what a drag. Anyway is it really required? -
8 days out of band to GBR surgery would still sometimes feel hungry
Tingting Wang posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am eight days out of the revision surgery but I would still sometimes feel hungry in the evening. Is this normal or not? I drink about 70g of premier protein shake each day. When I feel hungry, after drinking two sips of protein shake, it kind of relieve my hunger. I feel worried that I would still want to eat? How does everyone else feel? I have lost 10 pounds since surgery but did not lose any weight in 2 days. I don't know if I am doing something wrong. -
That was fun!!!!!! I got to the hospital and they were all ready for me! This part was just like the banding surgery in March. This is the tale of what happened next! First of all what is a Port Revision? Most of you already know but for the few who do not......it is when there is a leak in the port itself or the tubing going to the band! It is possible for the port to be damaged when the Doctor is doing a fill or adjustment. When there is a leak the doctor must go back in thru the belly button and fix the leak or replace the port. He finds the leak or problem with the port with a dye that is put into the port/tubing. This is all done with a local anesthesia so you are awake the whole time they are working on you and what ever is broken gets fixed, done, it was really quite fun......but then you hear the words of the Doctor, "Cheryl, The port has detached itself from the tubing and the tubing has gone up inside of you and I can not get it without doing it laparoscopically!", okay cool here we go on a nice trip to who knows where for a little while, I told them all night night and thanks for the great job and out I went! I woke up in the middle of a cartoon version of The Road Runner, it was really funny! I only had to stay at the hospital for a few hours, then I went home. So now today, it is almost the same as when I came home from the initial banding! I have three cuts from the laparoscopic part and the belly button cut! A bit sore today, feels like a Mac truck rolled over me a couple of times. BEST OF ALL!!!!!!!!! even though I am only on liquids, RESTRICTION, SWEET RESTRICTION! Oh how great it feels to have my old friend back in my body! Doc Feiz gave me a fill yesterday also just a little one. I can not say this enough, This young Doctor Feiz is amazing, kind, caring and very very special. Even my husband thinks so! So now back to loosing the tons and back to eating small portions. Just a side note! I was without any restriction for over 2 weeks, I ate a little more in portion size then with restriction and officially at the hospital yesterday I had only gained 2 pounds which I am sure is already gone with being on the liquids! This says to me that even with my band not being tight, I stayed in control of my hunger, the band was still doing its job, I still one night got food stuck eating too fast! I love my BAND!

I had a lapband 10/04 weighing in at 320 pre op. On 6/05, I had my first slip as well as had developed a hiatal hernia and severe acid reflux. The hernia was repaired and the lap band revised. The acid relux has increased to the point I can't stand it! After more teesting it was determined that I had yet another slip and needed to convert or ditch the band. I am now at 232 and lost all my weight within the first 6 months of my initial surgury. I have experienced no food tolerance issues, nor a feeling of being restricted despite 4 cc in the band. I realize I let this go too long but travel for a living and just dealt with it until I aspirated acid into my lungs...OUCH!! Trip to the doctors told me to get this fixed so I took a few months off work and returned to MA to review my options with a gasto doc. The first doc suggested a RNY as he does not do the VSG. (The nutritionist however feels that I am uncommitted and have failed the band.) A second opinion lead to my being told that my surgeon could convert to a VSG on a case by case basis with my insurance but felt I had failed the band twice and wasn't sure if I was committed to WLS. This Mexico for the procedure. I have been told by both docs above that one can not fly for 4-6 weeks after surgery due to risk of blood clots. Is this not the case? Where you uncomfotable during the flight? How long was your recovery? (I was driving 3 days after lap band surgery and back to work 5 days later. No pain meds and only mild discomfort after 3 days.) Should the surgen in MA not agree to perform the VSG, what is the time line with once contact is made with a Mexican Doc? Has anyone had any luck with their insurance covering the surgery in Mexico? (Few VSG have been done in MA to date I would definately prefer a doc with more surgeries under their belt without incurring the out of pocket cost.) What is the weight loss like for VSG versus RNY? (My mom had RNY and lost 88 lbs within 3 months.) Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

That seems like a very long time. The barium swallow does give them information though and from that they can tell if it slipped or not. Did they unfill you completely? That's what they did to me, and they said to come back in 3 months. The unfill takes most of the pressure off your stomach so it can heal again. I recently had a revision but I had the band from 2009-2016.
