Hello!!! I'm currently pre-op with Dr. Jawad. I started my initial consultation on 2/5 and my surgery was scheduled today for 5/28. My process went fast and smooth also quick approval with my insurance Cigna.

I did not have the 6 month wait at all. My policy only requires insurance approval and to speak to their nurse manager but literally nothing else. Of course they want a dr to make the case that it is medically necessary but they had zero other requirements other than to have a conversation with the health insurance nurse manager. The 6 month wait is very common in the insurance arena but I have never heard of a fast tracked one.

Lots of different choices available to readjust your situation. You can easily restart tracking your food. It will be helpful in several ways because you will have to write down exactly what you eat and how many calories, carbs, sugars, fats, etc. you take in. Be kind to yourself if you find that initially you are logging "bad" foods -- sugary treats, etc. Focus on hitting and not surpassing your maximum daily caloric intake. Little by little, modify your diet so that you are back on track with your protein and carb goals. Remind yourself that you are not on a fast train to disaster. You have identified a problem before it is out of hand and you are immediately taking steps to remedy it. As for exercise, lots of us falter, particularly during these COVID times. When I stopped exercising like you did during 2020 COVID (because I quit the gym), I was nagged by family members, sent articles about fitness, and finally was encouraged to take small steps to reintroduce the exercise I needed. I began viewing the Leslie Sansone "Walk at Home" videos on YouTube and walked along to them every day. At first, I would fast walk just 10 minutes three times a day with the videos and eventually I shifted to one 30 minute a day fast walk accompanied by video. She offers scores of different videos so I can do new ones every day for variation. So I think actually you are in a great situation to regain control of your life. You haven't regained. You are very aware of your shortcomings. And you are motivated to change. Take small steps towards each goal and you will get back on track. Best wishes. -

I guess what I mean by "fast track" is, my cousin had the sleeve surgery and her BMI was over 50. She also went through Beaumont and she did not have to do the 6 month supervised diet.....at least that is what she told me. During my process I will also be recovering from a total knee replacement. I already have my WLS appointments booked through March and will complete my 6th appointment in August. I hope to have surgery in September if that is actually how the plan goes. My insurance company or at least the lady I have communicated with has not been very helpful at all. We have Cofinity/Varipro through my husbands union. She did say it was a covered benefit if I met the criteria, which is set by a third party American Health Holdings. She however could not provide the specifics. I swear one lady works there because I have called a couple of times for information. I guess I will find out more tomorrow.

most insurance policies that cover bariatric surgery require a BMI of 40 if you have no comorbidities, and a BMI of 35 if you have two or more co-morbidities. So you should qualify - you have both. I don't know what they mean by "fast track" - that must be something specific to your insurance company. From what I can tell from hanging out here for the last six years, most of us do have to do the six-month supervised diet, regardless of BMI. Even though at first I though it was a stupid hoop that we had to jump through, I'm glad it was required. I think it really prepared me for how life was going to be after weight loss surgery. Otherwise, the change would have been REALLY drastic...(all the changes are drastic enough as it is - but at least you spend six months gradually changing your eating habits so you kind of know the drill beforehand...)

Pain near largest incision

Thank you. It is definitely no infection and I can push the area around my stomach with no pain. I think the scab came off too fast and it wasn’t fully healed. That’s my fault because I was putting vaseline on it to heal quicker. I put a large bandage on it to protect it until it fully heals and that did help a lot with the pain. I’m sure in a couple of weeks it’ll be fine. -
Hello Everyone! Not sure if I am posting in the right place or not. Tomorrow is my very first appointment to begin my weight loss journey. I live in the Metro Detroit area and will be going through the Beaumont Weight Control Center. I am excited and nervous at the same time. Food has been a comfort, but I need help. I think I have tried everything out there. I understand this will not be easy, but honestly I cannot continue on my current path. I will be 49 in July and I am having my 2nd knee replacement next month. I swear I have the joints of a 90 year old! I also am being treated for Psoriatic Arthritis, high blood pressure and I have been using a CPAP machine since 2019. I'm 5'4 and my current BMI is 41.7 (243lbs). Insurance wise, I do not believe I qualify to be fast track....I think my BMI needs to be over 50. I am just hoping for the best and that I can be approved. My joints are in constant pain and exercise right now with my knee is almost impossible. Has anyone ever had the 6 month supervised medical waived with a BMI under 50? Anyway, I look forward to making some new friends here and absorbing the wealth of knowledge on this forum.

I just checked and I'd lost 39.6 lbs at the three-month mark - so the same as you. And I went on to lose over 200 lbs. people lose at all different rates due to a myriad of factors - most of which you have little to no control over (e.g., age, gender, genetics, metabolic rate, starting BMI, whether or not you lost weight prior to surgery). The two factors you DO have control over is how closely you follow your program and your activity level. If you do well with those two, then that's all you can. If you're committed, you WILL lose the weight, whether fast or slow. I was a slow loser from the get-go, but I still ended up losing all of my excess weight.

IF meaning intermittent fasting? At a month out it may be a bit soon to be doing that given you are already on a fairly low calorie base, as well as finding it difficult to get your daily food consumption in a reduced time frame (given the reduced stomach volume). Did your surgeon / dietician give you the go head for IF? Given your weight has stalled a bit in the first four weeks you have lost a good amount of weight already. -
Tomorrow I will be 12 weeks post op gastric sleeve and I've only lost 40 lbs. I don't eat what I'm not supposed to, so I don't understand why I'm not loosing as fast. My appointment with Dr. is in April, and at the 2 week appointment he said I should be around 60lb loss by April. I will admit that exercising is my biggest struggle. Lettuce-9 months post op

It took me many months, but I can eat lettuce again. Anything you physically can't tolerate... lay off it for a while, but don't be afraid to try again later! I don't remember how long it took to eat lettuce, but I think it was close to a year??? Now I love my lettuce wraps! And I intermittently eat salads too. In fact, I substitute rice with salad quite often at restaurants. -
Yes. Except it happened to me at 5 months out. It's sort of happening again but I think my loss is just super slow now. Most here thought it was maintenance mode instead of a stall and that was probably 100% correct since I wasn't tracking my food. I've since upped my protein from 60 to at least 81 or above. Surgeon's office is okay with slow loss since I was under 200 pounds when I had surgery. Tracking is helpful. I never realized how many calories I was adding to get in my protein. All the unflavored protein powder, collagen powder, etc., can really add up fast! Losing slowly does suck. I hear you. I'm also trying to up my exercise.

I am coming up fast on my surgery, 3 days and counting. So I am attempting to food prep for recovery since I have 4 children ramging in age from 11 months to 12 years old., my hubby will have his hands full trying to take over as Mr Mom while I recover for the first 2 weeks. I am hoping to have easy recovery meals planned out for me so all he has to do is microwave them for me or I can just throw them together easily. I am planning so far on mostly pureed soups but mostly because I cant think of other things that appeal to me. Blending eggs is just not something I am going to be able to do. I dont eat fish, canned chicken, eggs, greek yogurt, cottage cheese or tuna. In the nutrition class that was almost all the recommended things. 🤦♀️ I have tried since october to be get use to cottage cheese, greek yogurt and canned chicken. But I havent been able to stomach any of it. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. -
Why did you pick such a high goal weight? Your BMI is STILL overweight!

Man, if I had a dollar for every critic who said this to me on these boards. It's a past time of a certain type of dieter....to send me hate mail and try to shame me for being outspoken. "You're still overweight! You shouldn't be telling people what to do! How dare you not feel ashamed at that weight!" Shakin my head over here. If I wanted to be 140, I could be. Have been. Looked god-awful and felt like I was starving all the time. If I wanted to be 160, I could be. Have been. I wasn't particularly hungry, got a reasonable number of calories, but thought I looked older. I like a little more round to my angles. I like less sag, fewer wrinkles. Not real interested in cosmetic surgery. Picked the best option for me. I like eating 1600 calories a day. I like having space in my diet for a couple pieces of fruit because I think phytonutrients are beneficial and important. I like how i feel eating a high fiber diet. I like room to be a vegetarian some days. I like flexability. It's how I can face this as a lifelong change. It's how I can make peace with food forever....cause I know this plan is WORKABLE in pretty much all situations. I can eat on my plan during a holiday, a funeral, a birthday party....during a power outage, while recovering from an injury, during extreme emotional stress, on the road, and while dealing with my inlaws. LOL. I typically weigh 165-170 pounds. I LOVE this weight. It is NOT "the best I could do because I couldn't get to a "healthy weight" ", it is an intentionally chosen set point. It's a choice. This is, I am 100% certain...the MOST healthy weight I can choose for myself. That whole...Arnold Schwarzenegger's BMI was technically Obese when he won Mr. Universe figures in. BMI is flawed. It doesn't differentiate between light muscle frames and heavy muscle frames, bigger bones, smaller bones. Different ethnicities. Different body styles. My feet, depending on the manufacturer are size 10 or 11. My shoulders are more broad than most men's my height. My butt, thighs and calves are overdeveloped because I rode huntseat and jumped horses for decades, even when I was quite heavy. My husband says they have a kinda superhero quality now. LOLOLOLOL So here's the thing....If you feel inclined to send me a snarky note about how I shouldn't say anything....because I'm not American Media model skinny, you might have a problem. As it happens, I have a good friend who models. He's 5' 10", weighs 157 pounds soaking wet, and they STILL wanted him to use coke for a week and fast...to look more sickly skinny for his last national ad campaign. Our impression of body image in the media is grossly distorted and unhealthy. And a lot of folks here....get a grossly distorted and unhealthy obsession with their eating habits, their BMI, the number on the scale, and how it defines them. Please, please, please remember....health. Physical health, strength, endurance, good labs, fewer medications. Emotional health...loving yourself, enjoying your life, feeling challenged and happy. Mental health...finding balance you can live with for a lifetime. Love your strong healthy body. Love your good food choices that provide good nutrition to nurture that body. Love the flexability to make it work though the tough spots. Avoid the fixations, the extremes, the inflexable rules, the disordered eating (and disordered not-eating) You can trust yourself to get to where you need to be....without punishment. Love yourself. Love yourself. Love yourself. -
I agree with going back to basics, whatever your post-op eating plan was (once you got back on solid food). For me, that was focusing on protein followed by veggies, minimal processed food, limited carbs. The good news is, you've already fought and won a much harder battle, so you know you can do this! Don't worry about trying to lose super-fast, as long as you can get your weight trending downward, you'll get back to goal sooner or later. Best wishes!

Making the surgery choice, which one?

Alot of folks already said more or less the same thing, but I'll throw in my 2 cents anyway: I chose sleeve because: I was afraid of dumping (but...I dump anyway) I wanted to continue using NSAIDs (but...I ended up not needing them anymore anyway) I was personally freaked out a bit by the re-routing of my intestines (but...not cutting out my stomach? lol) I DID NOT have GERD. I only had a choice between sleeve and bypass cuz those were the only ones covered by my insurance, so I didn't consider any other procedure. I think that one's results with WLS has more to do with the person, than with the type of surgery. I'm convinced I would have had the same result if I had the bypass. But that's just me. Some background and current statuses: I'm 5'2", almost 50yr old female, started off at 235 lbs at the beginning of my 2 week pre-op diet...2.5 years ago. I got to goal of 127 lbs in 7 months (108 lbs lost at that time). I settled into 115 lbs by 10 months post-op and stayed there basically since...but not without a bit of effort on my part. 3 times I got up to 120 lbs for a few consecutive days, and subsequently made efforts to get back down to 115. And 4-5 times I went sub-110 lbs for a few consecutive days, but didn't have to make any effort at all to get back to 115, go figure. This morning I was 109.2 lbs. I consumed very little calories during weight loss phase, and exercised regularly starting month 3 (running/walking mostly, and minimal strength training daily). No complications, nor issues other than those expected (dump with sugar, foamies/chest pressure if I eat too much or too fast, need to barf if I drink with my meals, burp like a teenage boy) At 2.5 years out, up until a month ago, I was averaging around 1800 cals a day with regular exercise (running & strength training 4-5 times a week). Currently I'm playing around with calories as I'm sidelined on the exercise front, which explains my lower weight these days cuz I haven't figured it out yet. I mostly eat salads (by choice, I LOOOVE salads!) , but I also eat desserts, spicy stuff, fried stuff, fatty stuff, drink coffee, alcohol and carbonated water. On rare occasions I eat bread or potatoes, but I don't eat rice nor regular pasta. I max out at about 1 to 1.5 cups of food per sitting (more if its salad) My lab results have consistently been uneventful (my last one was in November last year). So....so far so good. I have no illusions that I will be like this forever...but that's on me, not my sleeve. -

I had the SADI-S/SIPS/Loop Duodenal Switch surgery almost 14 months ago now. I've had some of your symptoms, but not all: Diarrhea (maybe once a week?) Constipation (happens on occasion, but only been bad twice) Excessive foul smelling flatulence (yep. made worse by sugar alcohol. Avoid sugar alcohol's as much as you can) Severe Bloating (occasionally) Abdominal discomfort (the problem with this one is I have EOE so sometimes it's caused by that and not my surgery. I had issues with abdominal discomfort BEFORE my surgery with that) Pale coloured stools (nope) Steatorrhea (it happens. lessen your fat intake it gets a lot better. it did in my case, at least) Foul smelling stools (I think it just goes with the territory, but it's always worse when I consume sugar alcohols. Avoid them if you can) Nausea (rare occasions. Usually when I eat to fast or too much) weight fluctuation (yes, but that's due to me having hypothyroidism and not my surgery. According to my PCP and surgeon, anyway) Malabsorption (I KNEW I'd have this as they told me before my surgery that it was common to malabsorb vitamins. Especially ADEK vitamins. However, I only have issues with Vitamin A and have to take extra. I also, for some reason have issues with my potassium though I doubt that's caused by the malabsorption. I DID develop a wheat allergy though. My surgeon believes it developed due to the malabsorption because it can happen that way. My PCP and gastroenterologist aren't sure though and said there's a slight chance I already had it, but the surgery made the allergy worse. So not sure on that aspect. I was never tested for the allergy prior to surgery) I'm so sorry that you're going through all that and are miserable. I doubt anything I said really helped, but many of those issues are fairly common for the surgery, or so I've been told. I really hope things get better for you! -
I am six days post-op and hungry. My doctor told me Thursday that it’s because we are still on ‘foods’ (liquids, in reality) that slip through the pouch very quickly. They go through too fast for the brain to really register satiety. This will definitely change in a couple of weeks once we are able to tolerate more substantive foods. GL to you!!!

Thanks for your reply. It was helpful as I prepare to have surgery. I'm having the sleeve surgery in 2.5 weeks. I plan to not jump on the scale a lot. I'm sure it might be frustrating to some to not be loosing faster or to hit stalls, but I dont want to drive myself crazy or create more stress on my body by scale watching. I've read a lot of stories on here about watching the scale. I'm having surgery to help improve my health. I dont want to he chasing numbers on a scale though. That would stress me out. I'm actually hoping that weight doesn't drop way too fast because I want my body to be adjusting some to the big changes. I'm trusting that overall if I follow my plan, I will lose weight in time and the speed of that may vary at times. Good luck Tim and everyone going through this process.

Hi, I have just stumbled across this forum and thank god I did as I am hoping to get some help. I has a the Sleeve surgery in 2009 and then had a SADI or SIPS Bypass ( I think that is the technical term for it) in June 2017. I am in Australia and they were just starting to use the SADI option so didn't have a huge amount of feedback available. After having the sleeve surgery done I was diagnosed with an auto immune condition Lupus (obviously not from the surgery). So after years of pred/steroids to treat my condition I had started putting weight back on so had the bypass done. When I had the surgery, everything went ok with that part, however from them moving my Pancreas I ended up with acute Pancreatitis and was stuck in hospital for almost a month. Anyhow fast forward to 2018 when I would consider myself completely healed from the surgery, I started having a lot of gastric symptoms like bloating, excessive gas, sometimes diarrhea sometimes constipation that would come and go. I put it down to everything just getting used to the surgery. However, the past 18 months or more the symptoms have become progressively worse and after having all types of scans, faecal samples done, this test and that test and trying different treatments and diets I have finally had it with all the doctors as the cant give me an answer and now just put it down to my Lupus! The last "diagnosis" from different GI's was Chronic Pancreatitis (which my Lupus specialist says its not) and SIBO. But after changing to different diets and trying courses of antibiotics etc there is still no pattern and still no answers! I AM MISERABLE! I live each day in chronic pain but to add this to my health problems has been devastating to my mental health. I have basically become a recluse (I just turned 40) because if my Lupus isn't playing up I still cant leave the house because of these ongoing Gastro issues and I am so over it. Bellow are all the symptoms i have, some at different time depending on how bad it is and there is no pattern as to when it comes and goes or how long it lasts. I was wondering if anyone that has had SADI surgery experienced anything like this and if so were you able to fix it? Diarrhoea Constipation Excessive foul smelling Flatulence Severe Bloating (I can wake up with a flattish tummy and by late afternoon it looks like I am 8 months pregnant and my tummy is rock hard) Abdominal discomfort Pale coloured stools Steatorrhea Foul smelling stools Nausea weight fluctuation Malabsorption So that is most of what I can think of right now, but I am really hoping I can find some answers as I am just existing not living Thanks....desperate poster -
How many calories should you consume 5 weeks out?

Really the only person who should be encouraging you to up your calories at 5 weeks post-op is your doctor or nutritionist. You are losing weight at a good pace. You are getting your protein in. And hopefully you are also getting in your daily water requirement. In the first couple months that is all you should be worrying about. I wouldn't up your calories yet unless you are instructed to do so by your team. Your incisions are still healing. What you are referring to is people giving guidance to folks who have stalled for long periods of time. You aren't there yet. And when you do stall (YOU WILL... ) you should stay your course for a while and wait it out. Everyone has a couple of "long" stalls. It is absolutely normal. And if you hit one and you feel it is going to long... talk to your team first and foremost. Now... down the road you may need to up calories at different times in this process, but don't do it too fast. Let our pouch do it's thing! -
VSG to RYGB - after 5 years with VSG

Greetings to everyone, On May 2, 2016, I received my VSG from my Bariatric Surgeon. Fast forward to February 2019, I start getting experiencing abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting that my general GI specialist couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. Diagnostic testing revealed a raw sore in my esophagus, a hiatal hernia, and the medical professionals couldn’t diagnose why I was experiencing abdominal pain in my gut. As time moved on, my aforementioned symptoms got worse and worse where I couldn’t keep down my food and medications. Now jump to March 10, 2021, I have my first surgical consultation with the Bariatric Surgeon that had put in my VSG in 2016. My Bariatric Surgeon recommended a revision from the VSG to RYGB to fix my hiatal hernia and the rest of my digestive symptoms. Dr. Chen has fast tracked my RYGB surgery to Monday, March 22, 2021. I have to admit to everyone that in 2016 when I the VSG, I was fine with it. However, now with the RYGB surgery within 48 hours of this posting in the BariatricPal forum, I’m getting nervous to having this surgery. One of the main reasons why I’m nervous is about having the RYGB surgery is the possibility of complications and after having surgery, and the dumping syndrome that seems to be common with a lot of individuals who get the RYGB surgery. Fortunately for me, while I was recovering from the VSG, I was not subjected to dumping syndrome. Can anybody share with me about your own experiences with getting the RYGB surgery? How was your recovery period? How was it going from a clear liquid diet to a full liquid diet to purée foods, etc. Share your thoughts and feedback. I would greatly appreciate that very much. -
Hi friends, Surgery is coming up so appreciate any help as I have so many questions. I work in a fast pace retail sales environment which has very little down time. Do you guys have any tips on how I can get my water intake throughout the day. I also heard the little medicine cup is the easiest to help the water get down, just wondering how long it takes everyone to get a 8oz glass of water down. Thanks for all your help Mark
