    New to the group

I Betty, I had my sleeve done 8/9/16 at the age of 62. Best choice I ever made for myself. Down about 50ps total between pre-op and now. Just got thru a 3 weeks stall and all. Down already 1/2 my blood pressure med. Love my new life. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using the BariatricPal App
  2. Hi sweetie! I have PCOS, too. I was diagnosed in 2002 and I only weighed around 220. I later ballooned up and had a BMI of like 60 I think. I tried tons of different things to lose weight for many years. I am not sure how to breakdown the last really hard 18 years. But I'm on oxygen 24/7. I had severe hypoxia and almost died from respiratory failure one day. All of this was a result from not staying on a cpap machine thinking I was cured from sleep apnea. Anyway, I later got diabetes. I was 404 pounds at my highest. So, in May of this year I made an appt. AGAIN to see another gastric surgeon. But this time I was pretty optimistic because I found out since I was on Medicare, they may cover the surgery. So I found a great surgeon online Dr. Chetan Patel here in Florida. He was so kind. Long story short I started working towards getting the surgery by meeting with the Nutritionist and I did everything she said. I started at 377, but I shed 47 pounds from May 22, 2020 to the day of surgery September 2, 2020. So I just had surgery like almost a month ago. I am so happy to say I had ZERO complications. Now....I've only lost 10 pounds since the surgery, BUT ask anyone on here there is a 3 week stall. It scared the crap out of me. But I am telling you all this because my Endocrinologist told me before the surgery that because I have PCOS I may need to go back on a little bit of Metformin. So, the last week I am back on 500 mg in AM and 500 mg in PM. And I have thyroid issues, too. Which in a month we will redo bloodwork to see if that needs to be adjusted. BUT LET ME TELL YOU. THIS IS THE BESTTTTTT decision I have ever made besides turning my life over to God. I feel amazing. I keep thinking. The mental changes just from having hope has changed my life. Girl. Do it. I have so much to say, but I eat like 600-850 calories a day. I get full easily. I do all the vitamins every day. If I feel hungry pretty soon after eating it reminds me to drink my water. I use the stopwatch on my phone all day long. You can't drink while eating and you need to 30 minutes between. I thought i would miss that, but my digestion problems totally stopped by doing that. And what a tiny trade off for a brand new life. I started college again 1 week out of surgery! Hello!!! Crazy wonderful life.
  3. I just heard about a week 3 stall on weight loss, is that true? I have been at the same weight for about 10 days and am just wondering.
  4. I feel like I'm the only one who's not had a stall. I read Butters 3 week stall on his signature when I first joined. At the time is was my only knowledge of there being a stall. I thought crap I'm a month out its going to happen any day. I was scared. Then my heart went out to everyone who had a stall!
  5. 4 weeks today and lost 4 pounds this week....3 week stall after surgery...so its moving fast right now...
  6. Not enough protein, not enough water, and not many calories will cause a body to go into conservation mode for a little while. Do a search on dreaded "3 week stall" . It happens/ happened to all of us. Don't panic, it passes. Keep up on your walking, nutrition and fluids and you will be fine. I think 14lbs in 2 weeks is awesome!
  7. I don't think you are doing anything wrong and I think your calories are where they need to be this early out. Not everyone loses super fast, I certainly did not. You may also be in the 3 week stall, considering the timing here, as others have mentioned. I certainly would not increase calories or carbs, but that is just my opinion, and I am not a dietician. Going super low carb now is not only a good way to lose weight but is a great way to cleanse your system of carb addictions and make it easier for you in the long run. Stick with it, follow your nut & doctor's recommendations, and tough it out. Your progress is not bad, really it isn't. I'm sure you are disappointed, but it could be a lot worse.
  8. I am another victim of the dreaded 3 week stall. I was just given the OK to start the pureed/super-soft diet, Now 4 days later the scale hasn't moved at all. I am putting the scale away and now plan on weighing in once a week from here on out. I also got my clearance to restart my exercise program (walking, resistance training, and kettle bells). I am going to start these today. I would never have known about the "3rd week stall" and I would have thought I was doing something wrong if it wasn't for the great information I've gotten from this site.

    Stuck and Frustrated. ..

I totally get it! I am just about 8 weeks post and when that "3 week stall" reared its ugly head, I actually laughed to myself and thought, "well, that was right on cue!". But, as the days (now week and a half) have passed.....not so funny. I didn't want to post anything either because of the many times it's been discussed!

    Stuck and Frustrated. ..

I'm right there with all of you. And it didn't occur to me that the 3week stall included pre op untill now. I hope the 3 weeks stall doesn't last for 3 weeks...that would suck!

    Frustrated and Weak

Sometimes our bodies are just in shock after the trauma of surgery. I agree, 550 could be low esp with activity. At about 1 month out I was scolded for not eating enough (about 650 calories). When I protested I couldn't "fit" anymore I was told to add high protein snacks. I worked up to 1000-1200 calories per day logging everything with 80-100g of protein exercising 5x per week and lost steady but not super fast. I had weeks I didn't lose much, maybe 1/2 pound, but no real "stalls" after the dreaded 3 week stall. Labs were always good and I lost only a little hair. Feels like I'm in a really good place for maintenance now.

    July Sleevers

I was sleeved July 17th. I too encountered the 3 week stall. It's awful. But my doctor allowed me to do full exercise on week 3 so I amped up my workout. I started jogging and i broke the stall. The only issue is during the "stall" you have to keep up your exercising or else you will stall again. And I'm talking like everyday. Learned that the hard way. Yesterday marked my 1 month sleeve-aversary and i was down 21lbs. Praying im down another .4 or so this AM. I've been working out ALOT!! So tired of this fat. Ugh. Hang in there & Good luck to you!

    Blood Pressure Meds

I was on 50 mg lisinipril and within a week needed to reduce, I am now down to 30 mg. At one week post-op my BP dropped to 90/50 ish... I adjusted (self directed) to 40 mg and monitored for 4 days, never getting above 97/70...at 30 mg now, my dizziness is gone and I'm averaging about 110/75. I haven't lost any weight per se since hitting my 3 week stall, so the bp has also stabalized. Understand, it's not just the weight loss...but the severe reduction in food and sodium. lol
  14. So I'm 7 weeks post op tomorrow. Down 32 pounds since surgery after a 3 week stall. I was talking to him about how I would love some chocolate... You know how our minds go. He jumps out with "I'll go get you a cookie, love". WTF? We just spent all this money on surgery and... Really? Hell yeah I want a cookie. But not gonna eat it. And he even brought it over... P.S. my husband is a tall, thin man that has always eaten whatever he wanted and never gain weight. He and my one year old are the reasons for the Cookies in the house.

    July Sleevers

Stalls will come and go...I was sleeved on July 30th. My weight was 296 when I started my 10 day pre op diet, my surgery day I was 280 and today was my one month check up and I weighed in at 252!!! I am very excited but I did have my 3 week stall where I didn't lose more than 2 lbs for almost 10 days then it just started to fall off again!! Keep at it and it will dip down again. Congrats so far everyone!!! PS I never have taken my measurements...Should I be?
  16. Sounds like you're dead in the middle of the 3 week stall. Many people hit this inevitable stall. It's nothing to worry about and there is nothing you can do about it except don't panic or stress...just keep doing what you're supposed to do. In my sig there is a link explaining why it happens, but I'll just cut and paste it here for everyone to read....good luck and hang in there. It will end on it's own.... Weight Loss Stall or Plateau A weight loss stall or plateau is an extended period of time during reducing efforts where is there is no weight loss according to the scale and no loss of inches according to the tape measure. This is why it is so important to take your body measurements before surgery, so you'll have a reference as your weight loss progresses post-op. We suggest you take measurements of your chest, waist and hip, neck, upper arm, thigh and calf. Be aware it is very common for your weight loss to "stall" shortly after surgery. Diana explains the reason for this below. The Inevitable Stall By Diana C. A "stall" a few weeks out is inevitable, and here's why. Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a saber tooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored. Breathe, and fuggedaboudit for a few days. What You Can Do About a Stall or Plateau If you are experiencing a post-op weight loss stall or plateau further out there are a few possible causes. First, check that are you really in a stall. If the scale has stopped moving you may be losing inches, so check your measurements. Too Many Carbs? Carbohydrates can start sneaking into your foods without you being aware of how quickly they are adding up. For more information on carbs, see our section on Carbohydrates. If you are struggling with your weight loss you may want to examine your daily carb count. You can try to keep your carbs under 50g a day and see if that makes a difference in your weight loss. Do not eat carbs before bedtime as it triggers insulin and initiates fat storage. There are some great web site resources you can use to keep track of what you are eating. Fit Day Spark People - If you join Spark People also join the DS group. The Daily Plate Calorie King For more tips on keeping a food journal see the Personal Nutrition Guide. Eating Enough? If you are under-eating or go more than 4-5 hours without eating, your body will shift into fasting mode, slow your metabolism and conserve your stored energy (fat). This can contribute to a weight loss stall or plateau. Make sure you are eating small meals or small Snacks throughout the day and also ensure you meet your daily Protein requirements. Try eating some protein with every meal or snack. For more information on protein requirements see our section on Protein. Drinking Enough? An adequate level of water in your body aids in the effective breakdown of fat. The daily minimum recommendation is 64 Fluid oz of water a day. If you are in ketosis you will need to drink even more water to ensure the ketones are flushed out of your system. You may also need more than the minimum amount of water if you are exercising or live in a warmer or dry environment. Exercising? Exercise can increase your metabolism and burn fat. Strength training will build muscles and will boost fat burning. In a stall you can try increasing your volume of exercise or changing up your routine to overcome a weight loss stall or plateau. If you have been doing mainly aerobic activity, try doing a bit of strength training, and if you have been doing mainly strength training, try an aerobic work-out. The High Fat - High Calorie Stall Buster Many DSers swear by the fat/calorie shock as an effective weight loss stall or plateau buster. Having a day of higher fat and calorie eating followed by a returning to consistent low carb eating can sometimes "shock" your body back into weight loss mode.
  17. @ member Happy..,Your doctor is absolutely wrong about the stall! I had a 3 week stall at 5 weeks post op. During that time I wasn't getting in enough protein because dense protein made me full too quickly. I took the advice of several members on this site about increasing my protein. I did this by adding an extra protein shake daily. By increasing my protein I broke the stall and lost 8 pounds in 2 weeks. Trying increasing your protein and water intake and decrease your carb intake and you will do well.
  18. I agree with everyone on here. I went through a 3 week stall in my second month and it drove me bonkers and got all the same advice you are getting. One thing I was told was to measure myself with a tape measure. I did that on every measurement I could possibly do and I am grateful I did. Because generally it seems when I am stalled again I am losing inches somewhere on my body. Not just waist or hips but sometimes they stay steady but my bust or arms are losing it. This measuring once a week has helped me to focus on another change not so obvious to see. Also your body has been traumatized and it is not surprising that it needs to take a break every once in awhile. Be patient and as long as you do the plan and stick with it (Protein, Water,Vitamins, enough calories, sleep and exercise) there will be no way at this stage in your process for you not to lose weight. Best of luck and be patient and loving with yourself you deserve it!! Stop being so critical of you and your progress, dang it, you are awesome!!

    Weight loss

I am feeling the same way!!! I lost 8lbs in the first 4 days after surgery… then in the last 11 days I’ve only lost 2lb… I was expecting it to drop more.. I spoke to my dietician and she said I’m doing really well with protein (60g) a day and at about 1800-2000ml of fluid a day. I’ve started walking and using my exercise bike more.. I really hope the stall doesn’t last long it’s disheartening as it makes you feel it was all a waste of time (and for me lots of money) 😞 You say 3 week stall, but I’ve stalled since week 1….

    Anyone with PCOS?

I was sleeved 4/16 and have had two periods since. The first one was brutal because I hadn't had one in 2 years. Dr put me on birth control and the second one wasn't so bad and not heavy like the other. Thank God! Pcos sucks. Weight gain, excess body hair, thinning hair and possible infertility sucks. And no one knows anything about it unless they have it. No one else understands either. My weight loss has been pretty good. Had about a 3 week stall but seems fine now. Surgery weight was 284 and now I'm 210. Hopefully these pcos symptoms go away. Hubby and I want a baby. That was the main reason for surgery. I'm 30 will be 31 in August. My clock is ticking really fast!! The 18 month wait is gonna be the hardest!
  21. Guess I am in the 3 week stall. So frustrating! The scale has not moved in nearly a week. I am eating around 500 calories a day. How is that even possible? I am ready for skinny and I am only down 18 pounds.

    Anyone from NYC?

From manhattan(UES) and just had surgery 9/14. Started my journey at 310 (first appointment) and was 286 when I started my pre op diet. I went into surgery at 273 and today being a little over 3 weeks I am at 256 and never felt better. I have a feeling I am at the 3 week stall because I haven't lost anything this week unfortunately.
  23. I can see where this would have freaked you out. If I'd not been warned ahead of time (on here) I would have been standing there scratching my head and reaching for my phone to call the surgeon and make some noise. Much respect for you traveling so soon after surgery. That couldn't have been much fun. I'm prepared for the 3-week stall. Ready indeed.

    How To Break A Stall

Having a bout of no loss at your point is completely normal. You just wait it out. There are stall-busters, but those are for "real" stalls. What you're going through is most likely just a glycogen cycle. Look up "3 week stall". Should be more than enough info.
