    Kind of freaking out pre-op

Yes: today is the first day of my pre-op diet and I've just had my very first protein shake ever. After all I've read on here, it was better than I expected! Yes, I had the indulgent "final" meals. Now it's time to follow the plan and change my life. I love to cook and to eat and don't eat fast food or a lot of junk--just too many carbs, too many fats. One of the things I've realized is that there really won't be anything off-limits for life in terms of the sleeve--but there are things that SHOULD be off-limits for the sake of my health. I'm okay with that: maybe I'll miss bread and mashed potatoes, but are they really worth the diabetes, ,knee pain, high blood pressure, etc.? NO. Hang in there, Lk664 . . . and keep focusing on how much better your life will be in the future.

    head hunger or body hunger?

Head hunger vs body hunger... head hunger = (my symptoms only) I just ate and yet Im looking for something else. OR I get distracted and forget about food for a few, then go digging around the kitchen again once I get bored. body hunger (real hunger) = stomach growling or gas bubbles coming up (like a burp thing), Im hungry and realize that I havent eaten in X amount of hours, getting a light headed feeling, or when I look at my outside cat and having a thought of tasting/eating her cat food... well, these are the things that kinda ring a bell and make me realize I need food - fast! If cat food seems yummy, then you are probably starving.
  4. Lordy! Deep thoughts for a hump day! As I sit here taking in my 2nd cup of real coffee and drinking my chocolate Peanut Butter (and espresso spiked) Protein shake I can't help but wonder of those are just not normal thoughts by normal people everyday? The last couple days have been terrible for me. I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't have simple carbs and sugars till the end of the year. Day before yesterday, I had a piece of cashew, dark chocolate topped peanut brittle. Thats all she wrote….things went to hell in a hand basket fast! Have been beating myself up one side and down the other since as I stuffed my face with the poison. I finally, yesterday afternoon took it out to the trash can out side and then beat myself up some for having to take that step. I was damned if I kept it and damned if I tossed it. Either way, I lose. After reading your post, it made me realize that we do this in more aspects of our lives than just as it relates to our weight loss journey. Maybe we have just conditioned ourselves to be our own worst enemy and critic? Yes? Whoever said this journey is every bit as much mental and emotional is absolutely correct. As most of us know, the actual part of losing the weight is not as hard as keeping it off. Keeping it off is where the head comes into play. If we don't fix that we will never succeed. We have heard them all, "We have to keep our head in the game", "We have to deal with what's eating us", We have to……the list goes on and on. Perhaps we need to redefine "success." We are constantly evolving and growing and changing and taking steps forward and backward and this and that….. Maybe the best gift we can give ourselves this Holiday season is try and see truly how far we have come and try not to look at how far we need to go. When we look at how far we need to go, the finish line is never in sight. Interesting topic, RJ. You really have expressed what I have been feeling the last few days. This should be a time of joy and gratitude and I have found myself blue and self loathing. I thought for sure I had this and the holidays would be a piece of cake. Not so much. Will I ever "have it"? Probably not. Will I ever give up striving to "have it"? I can only pray not. I do think today though, I am going to skip the gym and go outside in the beautiful sunshine and garden. It makes me happy. Just for today, I'm not going to work on my physical body. I'm going to work on my heart and my head. Thanks RJ, for helping me make the best decision that I can make for me as a person today. I wish the same for you. ((((big hugs)))) I'm a hugger!

    stupid question

PB (Productive Burp) happens when you don't chew well enough, eat too fast or eat too much. The food can't get into the pouch and comes back up (some burp it up, some hiccup it up). It is not like throwing up because there is no stomach acid just your food in the same form as when you swallowed it. Sliming happens when food gets stuck in your band. It usually happens when you do not chew well or swallow something too big (like a pill). The food cannot pass from the pouch through the band and gets stuck. Your body produces mucus to try and dislodge it and that mucus backs up into your mouth. It is a thick clear slimy mucus that you have to spit out.
  6. I'm glad I found this topic, if I make mashed potatoes like a Soup, ( with cottage cheese and soy milk), I can eat it, I can tolerate pudding and greek yogurt if I eat slowly, (30-45 minutes per meal). I too felt as if I can eat too much even though I was sleeved a week ago today. My surgeon and her team let me leave the hospital on a stage 3 diet. The other day I had a few slices of pureed roast chicken and broth and I ate it as a soup. I tolerated it okay, but I started feeling as if I was eating too much or moving too fast. Thank you so much for creating this post, if you, (or anyone), has any tips, or believes I am moving too fast please let me know, my follow-up isn't until the 10th of September and I feel as if I'm doing things wrong even though I'm sticking to the plan, ( weird I know!) Officially Banded

Hey, I am officially banded as of Wednesday 16th at 2:30pm, by Dr Watson. It was a great experience, I wioke up in a bit of pain, mostly my throat was sore and my mouth dry, the pain killers worked pretty fast and by Thursday morning I was ready to go. I still have a bit of pain in my shoulder from the gas, but apart from that, i feel normal. My husband was a darling and made me some chicken broth which I have loved. I have also stocked up on some Up and Go Breakfast drinks, and have been sipping Water all day long :-) I am glad its over and now looking forward to the new thinner me

    Hey new here

No one knows. Apparently, it happens sometimes. Most/many people lose their hunger after surgery, but some people are still hungry. And since I was told not to eat for more than 30 minutes and I can't eat fast or I'll be in pain, I can only eat a little bit, so I'm hungry all the time. The surgeon told me to meet with the nutritionist, but she had already told me to talk to a doctor about medication, which the surgeon didn't agree with.

    Post op complications

I burped a lot and I still do. I think it is easy to swallow air with our sleeves. Pain can happen if we eat too much or too fast. I hope all you have is gas.

    Day 2 Of Presurgery Diet

I'll be starting my all liquid diet right after Thanksgiving. I'm REALLY nervous about it - I tried it before and failed miserably. My dr. office told me not to drink slim fast because it doesn't have enough protein in it so that is why I was starving. So I'll try again... I"m reading your blogs for inspiration Best wishes!

    Dating

So, I am stating the obvious, but for some people massive weight loss is an emotional roller coaster and can be very vulnerable feeling. I would not want to be swimming with the sharks in that headspace.... but again, maybe I just suck at online dating but it was unbelievably disappointing for me. I started to actually think that i have a terrible personality which is weird after a lifetime of obesity when my vibrant personality and smile were the things people DID find attractive through all the fat. After sorting through the obvious liars, out of shape, no attraction type... a few times i found men I thought I would like to get to know. We would have a few dates and I would hear "there is no chemistry". I thought how strange - you want to see me often, have been telling me how beautiful, sexy, funny, charming, fun to talk to I am - and all of a sudden. no chemistry? Then it finally hit me - things weren't moving fast enough for them. what they meant to say, it has been 3-4 dates and no sex...ah ha, now I get it. Once I realized that I stopped doubting myself so much. I would not have wanted to be so vulnerable to all that while in the middle of a major transformation. It was hard enough even after I feel so confident in my looks and weight etc now.
  15. I'm currently on the preop diet, my surgery is Monday. My dr has me on 4 of the high protein slim fast shakes they are 180 cals and 20 g of protein per shake. They taste horrible but it could be worse. I Can have sf jello and sf ice pops and sf liquids along with clear broth. Everything totals 800 cals and 80 g of protein daily.
  16. I thought I would share this with those of you that need protein drinks and different options :crying: I had this emailed to me a long time ago, and while cleaning out my inbox of the 2000 emails I stumbled across it again. I do not know the original author/creator/inventor or I would give proper credit. PUMPKIN PROTEIN SHAKE This is a wonderfully decadent way to get in your protein! Add the oatmeal, protein powder, and Splenda and mix well. (If needed, you can add a little bit of water to make it easier to mix) Roll into walnut sized balls, refrigerate. Store in fridge in zip-lock baggies. This recipe makes 20-24 balls. CHOCOLATE CARAMEL BROWNIE SHAKE (All stages except clear liquids) 2 scoops PD Alpine Chocolate 1 cup ff Lactaid milk 1 shot Torani sf caramel syrup 4 Joseph's sf brownie bites Ice cubes Blend liquid ingredients until smooth, add brownies with ice cubes and pulse until same thickness as a Dairy Queen Blizzard (I use an entire tray of ice cubes). It's important to note that this is not a low-calorie meal. This was yummy, but I would not add the brownie bites in the future -- they add 100 calories and 14g of carbs, which isn't worth it for the minimal flavor boost. Also, I typically use ff Lactaid milk, but dh brought home reduced fat and I didn't realize it. So, the reduced fat milk has 130 calories per cup, versus only 80 for the ff version. The caramel syrup has no nutritional value for a 1-oz. serving. Hello

This depends on a lot of factors : How big you are How long you've been big How fast you lose weight and probably the most important factor : GENETICS.

    6 month supervised diet

Yes, you have to wait the whole 6 months before it's submitted because your doctor has to prove you did it. My surgery was really soon after my paperwork was sent in- between 2 and 3 weeks. I'm GLAD I couldn't get the surgery fast ,though when I found out about the wait period I was heartbroken. Use this time to learn as much as you can about what you have to do post-surgery, you'll be glad you did!

    Is that what that is????

It's funny that you say you get shoulder pain when eating too fast and getting stuck, I immediately get a sharp headache and pain in my chest when I eat too fast and get stuck. I too, think that it is a warning from the band!!!

No support - how do you do it?

If he is not supportive of you now and you haven't even had surgery yet, unless he is willing to be educated and wants the best for you, I believe your problems will only continue and will likely worsen after surgery as you start to lose weight. How is he going to react when others start telling him how good you look? I would ask him if he's willing to go for counseling. In the seminar, my surgeon said he once had a woman who blamed him for her divorce after WLS (which is absurd). He said if you have a strong marriage before surgery, it will only get stronger. If you have a bad marriage before the surgery, it will only get worse. Also, in my research I've read the divorce rate among weight loss surgery patients is higher than the national average. Additionally, I've seen that show "My 600 lb life on TLC a few times. The surgeon identifies the enablers (caretakers or family members who cook the wrong foods and bring fast food in) as a major barrier in the patients being successful. If things don't change with your husband, I think this will be challenging to say the least.
  21. **** warning stomach pic included*** Pre op, I did research for few months , went to 2 seminar state side and found out my insurance would not pay for gastric sleeve. They claimed it was experimental but they would cover RNY/DS/Banding. I said thanks but no thanks and looked to Mexico. Came across Dr Ilian and his coordinator Omar ( thanks GAmom ). I called Omar sent him my healthy questionnaire and traded question about time line ,payment etc. Scheduled same day surgery for a month out to allow delivery of my first baby. Got my cashier check $4000, no deposit required, round trip plane ticket delta ATL to san diego 269... such a steal Wednesday April 10th, grabbed my back pack hop on the plane (4.5 hr) Got to San deigo ( 10.30 am) and was picked up by beautiful Aracely. took about 20 min to get to Oasis/florence hospital. Checked in and was usher in a beautiful room with huge glass wall. I was still trying to enjoy the scenery and I heard behind " please sir change into this hospital gown you need to go to xray" another nurse came simultaneously said " blood draw for the lab" I kinda panicked I was not expecting it to go so fast but too late to back out. Spent the 30 mins doing x ray cardiologist , weight in and blood draw. IV drip was not good all, I have small veins and pre op dehydration made it worse ,I had 3 nurse try and insert the drip no luck after over 1 hr the anesthesiologist herself finally made the insert. Dr illian came into the room I spoke to him and I was so comfortable he explained the details of the surgery ( I opted to preemptive remove my gallbladder? and introduced me to his team. I was wheeled into the OR about 2.15 and I remember saying please make sure I woke up...pufff I remember waking up with some gas pain and fell in and out of sleep till the next morning, my body was trying to catch up from 2 weeks of sleep deprivation with a screaming newborn. Some anxious hours for wife back home when could not talk to me immediately after surgery. Spent the next day walking the halls with other patients . checked out from the hospital on friday and immediately went to Angeles hospital for the contrast leak test ( passed ,I had 4 in total , one gas , 2 blue dye and contrast ) then next to the nutritiologist, got some chicken broth and checked in at Lucerna Hotel . I opted to spend only one night at the hotel so that I could go be with wifey and baby . I had some gas pains for about 3 day, zero pain and enough meds if I need it. The trip back across the border took about 30 mins thanks to the driver having medical pass. I saw dr Ilian twice before leaving the hospital and again at the hotel. he is the nicest dr I have ever met. If money was not an issue I would still go back to TJ for the surgery . I believed I received better care and skill with dr Illian and his staff best $4000 ever spent. I am 2 weeks out and down 24 lbs. So happy i did this .

  23. Hi everyone, this is my first post on here.. I need a huge kick up the bum, and I am hoping that you could all help me out, or tell me I'm not the only that has done this, I feel absolutely terrible with myself and a complete failure of a person.. I was sleeved on January 22nd so I am almost 3 months out, and I have lost 27kg which I believe is around 59 pounds - I have just recently maybe the last two - three days just totally fallen off my eating plan, I was in tears last night about how disgusted and upset I am with myself, on Saturday we were at a friends house and she made chicken sasuage rolls, they where cut into 4 or 5 pieces so they weren't big, (maybe 3cm) however I managed to snack on about two of them and then eat half a sasuage from the BBQ, this is a lot of food compared to what I have been eating, so I was upset with myself, I did not feel sick so I guess I didn't over eat? Sunday I was fine, Monday I went out and made those yummy sasuage rolls because I wanted to make them for my husband, I managed to eat 2 and a half on Monday night, THEN a few hours later I wanted another one, God knows why,? ate it and vomitted, this is when I thought omg, have I stretched my stomach? What is wrong with me? Why do I just want to keep eating when I know I can't? Then today I was good and fine during the day. I had a little bit of mince meat with sauce for dinner and then when I was making my husband lunch for work tomorrow I seen another little sasuage roll in the fridge and ate it, I think I ate it to fast and threw up again, I am not absolutely disgusted in myself and don't know what's wrong with me... Am I eating too much? Have I stretched my stomach? am I over reacting? Guys I'm so upset I just can't even handle it, why I would go through all this just to eat shit food again? Please give me a big kick up the ass or tell me I'm just loosing my mind and over reacting? I just don't know Thank you! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hey! So glad you started this thread! Yep me too 5 day post op! I feel ok same as you it sounds. Each day gets better. I haven't pooped and I was wondering the same. I feel like it would help the bloat and over all uncomfortable feeling I have in general. It's not horrible thank god! Still taking pain meds here and there but doing more here and there. But tore out fast. I have cold sweats often too which is weird. It's rather warm and humid here in Cali at the moment but I was thinking maybe all the drugs sweating out of me or something? I don't know. Not taking in much food or liquids I guess I should say. I think pooping would help all around lol
  25. I did not start near that weight, and if I was I would not have needed the VSG I am 5' 10" and was 338 at the start of my journey. Ok now that has been said and please don't think that I am being condescending because that is the farthest thing from my intention, I just wanted to let you know where I started! It is completely understandable that you are scared but trust me you will be fine in the end. You need to fasten your seatbelt my dear because this is going to be one heck of a ride! I am almost a year out and you can check my profile for the amount of weight that I have lost. I feel absolutely AMAZING and wish that I would have done this MUCH SOONER, if I did then there are several health issues that I would not have had to deal with! What I did to prepare myself is exactly what you are doing, searching boards, looking at Youtube videos and doing serious research online. Just know that there are things that you are going to have to give up like soda, but in the long run it will be more than worth the small and temporary discomfort that you will go through. Another way that I prepared myself was starting on a high protein and low carb diet. That will be essential to long term results, it will lead to long term results. Please do not sweat the procedure the worst time that I have had with it was the one week following surgery, after that it was smooth sailing! This is a process, and even though it is moving pretty fast you come out on the other side half the woman you are now and have a smile on your face that very few things will turn into a frown! Your confidence will increase, as your waistline decreases! Good luck and please report back with your progress!
