    Vegan & WLS

I realize this post is several years old and I'm not sure if you still use this app, but I love your post. Thank you so much. I am vegetarian and, as I ready myself for surgery, I am having some difficulty finding the "right" kinds of proteins to add to my diet. Your post is really helpful. Thank you. Transitioning from lapband to bypass on June 12! HW: 402, CW: 314, GW 185

    Vegan & WLS

So I'm going through classes for WLS. I have 2 classes left and one of the dietitians told me that because I'm vegetarian (almost vegan) that the doctor should not sign off. I'm very concern, I did all labs, finished 10 of my 12 classes, started a support group, down 5% of my body weight; I think I'm off to a great start, so for my next appointment I wanted to put together a eating plan for me vegan style meeting all my protein needs for post surgery. Showing them I can do it. So what are some of the menu plans you used for protien right after surgery. I plan on the basics protein powder, soy milk. What did you do to insure you got enough protein.

    constipation

I'm vegetarian. I've been adding a bit of spinach to whatever I eat each day . I ate a salad a day before my surgery and drank plenty of Water. I never ate processed food. I was super regular. Going 2 -3 times a day or more. I was discharged on a 30 day supply of stool softeners. I've been going each day but it's not as robust as it once was. I figure part of it is I'm eating so much less. Once I started adding back in my leafy greens, my once a day felt more robust.

    Update

Hello Anne and Mel: Thank you for your kind words. In regards to fills, I've had one (1.5cc). I'm on the fence about having another for now anyway. My restriction varies, somedays I can eat just about anything and can eat till I want to stop (taking in consideration that now that volume now is markedly decreased) other days the band stops me cold after a bite or two. I am now able to reconize that first signal of slight discomfort, another bite will make me extremely uncomfortable. I find that most of time if I wait for a burp, I can eat some more. Hubby, on the other hand can make himself burp (a skill that even as a child I couldn't master) so he always consumes more than I can. I hope this doesn't sound too gross. I feel satisfied after eating. I do still have the head hunger, after 40+ years of eating what I wanted when I wanted it, it's a ongoing battle, but, a battle I'm gonna win. On old diets, the scale would hardly budge, so I was easily discouraged and would begin to overeat. I have this wonderful tool and I tell myself that. Losing weight really helps me stay focused. My cheating is at a minimum, sometimes I go a week or two without cheating. (by cheating I mean chocolates or ice cream) I have put myself on a caloric range of 800-1200 per day. I get almost all my water in and have added protein drinks to make sure I get in the protein as I am a vegetarian. I still get hungry, but, most of the time when I grab for something it's only a habit (head hunger). I'm a snacker, but, now I try to grab for the healthy things. I joined Curves back in Feb (I met a woman online who had the bypass and we work out together and have a blast) and I am now walking my two large dogs which is a good upper and lower body work-out. Good luck you two, please let me know if I can help in anyway...................Gabby

It's actually one my doctors office males and puts out. If you find the number for Chike they have a "chicken" broth full of protein that has absolutely zero actual chicken or broth from chicken, it's made from a variety of spices and is delicious but suitable for vegetarians. No veggies.....?

Check out The Davis Clinic on Facebook. They are all vegetarians, and Dr. Garth Davis has written a book on the benefits of a vegetarian diet. I'm just not ready to give up fish. Lol.

    LapBand and chemo?

Jacqui~ I Know what your going through & I will be praying for you. As so many have said you have the will power, mental & physical strength to get you thru this. I was diagnosed with Follicular Non-Hodgkins lymphoma 5 yrs ago. After I had my Hysterectomy I found a lump in my groin & was diagnosed wth a small hernia. Dr's thought I started exercising to soon after surgery. I was quite healthy 145 lbs ate pretty much a vegetarian diet & was quite active. Had completed the LA marathon 2 yrs in a row when suddenly the rug was pulled from under my feet in an instant. I went in for Hernia repair surgery & was told upon waking it was not a hernia & they wld run a biopsy. To make an already long story short. My cancer is incurable, there is no treatment. Im a stage 3 & was told anywhere from 4 to 12 yrs life expectancy (12 being stage 1) I did the math & I had 1 huge panic attack that seemed like it lasted for months. Telling my family was the most difficult thing I have ever had to do. I am a patient at City of Hope & have a great team of Dr's. My cancer is a slow growing cancer & was told I would most likely live a full long life. I get tested every 3 mths bcuz it can change to an aggressive cancer at any time. My faith, my family & friends support got me through this & you will get through this also. Listen to your body. Keep hydrated. Rest & eat healthy & nutrtious foods. High alkalien food (Greens), Cancer thrives on sugar. You will be in my prayers.

  10. Hi! You know, I decided long ago to join the ranks of a vegetarian, one person advised me to start, for my health and lose weight. Read more: http://happybody.tv/vegan-diet-and-weight-loss/ I'm just trudging on the fact that I do not eat fish, meat and seafood. I started to cook, for what I did not like before, and cooking is now a pleasure, and it turns out magically delicious.

Are you following a Paleo Diet?

Agree being vegetarian I don't eat bacon, but I eat eggs, and use coconut oil frequently. I have my choletsral is always within range and my carbs can go high as long as it from green leafy veg/fruit and beans. Unless you are genetically disposed to high cholesterol coconut oil isn't a bad thing.

    'Skinny Bitch' Revolution!

Lauren, if you eat everything but the flesh of an animal you can call yourself a vegetarian. It is a lot harder than you might think. Especially if you decided to go vegan. There is dairy and eggs hidden in a shit ton of foods. I would definitely recommend reading up on it and talking to your nutritionist to make sure you are getting adequate amounts of nutriants.

    What kind of evil monster...

Was up at the lake last weekend, visiting some friends (a couple of which are vegetarians). As everyone was partaking in a bowl of ice cream, I was asked if I wanted a little. I held my tongue from what would be my normal reply (being that there were kidlins around). Instead I politely declined and asked her if she would care for some dead dried out cow ( I was eating jerky).

    AMAW/CAMAW - Let's do this thang!

Hi y’all I won’t join you but I am gonna just do a low carb week, no β€œtreats” and good healthy eating. My wife is a vegetarian who personally struggles with my eating meat any time she has to see (or smell) it, but is supportive given my surgery. An all-meat-all-week week would do her head in! That said, if anyone is interested in a special meat and cheese week from 18th Dec up to (but I think not including!) Christmas Day, I am in! That is a β€˜batchelor’ week for me, with my other half having already headed off to family, and I don’t join them all until late on 24th. So that week I have been planning steak, pork ribs, black pudding, bacon... mmmmmmmmm

    Green Smoothies

I've watched the video that you posted a few months before surgery. He is not an advocate of "protein first" 6 months post op. As a vegetarian, I found this philosophy and his research to back the idea, quite interesting. I am doing further research into the notion of eating vegetables first before doing it myself.

    Day 20

I am trying to not get hungrier. My weight has stalled the last few days I am stuck at 244, so I need to kick some ass the next few days and workout. I do not want to gain anything. I have been eating carbs and veggie protein like soy. I am eating about 4oz 3-4 times a day. I think this is good. My Dr. did not give the best nutritional guide other than getting protein. I am vegetarian so it's different for me. I wish I could afford a nutrionalist. Any advice on eating on the mushies would be awesome :tongue_smilie: Breakfast today was 1 pack oatmeal and half a nanner. Lunch will likely be 4oz veg chicken Dinner 1 large veggie sausage 30 grams of protein I know it sounds vain but I have a show on 9/25 and really want to be 230.

    Obese Kids

I have two children, ages 23 and 24. My 24 year old son has never been overweight and is, in fact, naturally skinny. My daughter was chubby from about 2nd to 5th grade and then hit puberty and thinned out. I always was careful with what I fed them and they were both actively involved in sports. Now that they are grown, my daughter watches what she eats, as she has a tendency to gain weight and my son is a vegetarian.

    Forbidde foods yes or no?

Drooling at the thought of pancakes, with the butter all melting into the maple syrum, siiigh. Instant pain. Really cant do those, its not worth it. I loathe pork chops, so never eat those. I love cooking - I'm really having fun with vegetarian recipes as I bought a lovely cookbook and really like cooking modern, fusion style cuisine. I spend a lot of time and effort cooking and I really enjoy eating it, in moderate quanity and I usually cook healthy meals, not stodgy crap.

My whole life revolves around helping others and now is the time to take care of myself. I look forward to hearing everyone's stories. If I can ever help just yell. Barb PS..... Any Vegetarians have the surgery? I ask because eating as a vegetarian after surgery will be different than it is now. Home

    OMG, that HURT!

My hubs has stories about mushroom hunting, but he wasn't looking for the nutritional value, if you catch my drift, LOL! I'm a vegetarian, so I had mushrooms, olives and grape tomatoes on my pitta pizza. They can be made healthy. Personally, when I think of pizza, I think crispy crust. But, if you are just looking at pure nutritional values, mushrooms in lieu of crust is a great idea. My hubs prefers his drenched in cheese and peperoni. So, for us, the individual pizzas work and we each get what we want. I've had the portabella (sp) as 'hamburgers' before. Now, I think I'll have to try the pizza thing. As a vegetarian, I am always looking for new ways to try veggies. Thanks for the suggestion :smile2:

Dietician Stuff...help me not be a jerk...

Not second guessing anyone. I also have a hernia and can't deal with dense, heavy fiber type foods without pain and gas. I bloat up like a blimp when I eat grains. This is no different than a vegan or a vegetarian. I've been on a specific diet for a long time and I want them to know about it.
  23. I am walking 5 miles a day (we have a inside cork inside of my job) that is 1 mile long and on my breaks I walk around it twice, I drink 80-100 ounces of water daily and 80-90 grams of protein a day. I was originally a vegetarian but I have added seafood into my diet. I eat eggs, and a piece of cheese for breakfast w a protein shake and dinner and lunch could be fish, shrimp ect w steamed veggies, quinoa ect. I can only have 2-3 bites so far. I try and eat every few hours? I take all of the required vitamins and papaya enzyme!

To fill or not to fill?

As usual, you make a lot of sense, Donali. And according to those guidelines, I probably need to take in more, not less, calories. Protein is a challenge because I'm a vegetarian. I drink Protein drinks to help boost my protein grams. I know most people don't believe in drinking calories, but it's only 80 calories and it's the only way. I eat cheese, yogurt, nuts, etc. but they don't have nearly the protein quantity of meat. I will do Fitday occasionally on your advice, but in general, I am not into counting calories at all. If I wanted to do that, I could have skipped the band thing entirely. I am definitely not losing as fast as some, but I am reasonably satisfied so far. And I guess I'll skip the fill for now. Thank you. Nancy
