    Vegetarian post op

My doctor did not have me on straight liquids right after post-op - I went straight to the pureed stage. For the first couple of weeks, I LIVED on blenderized lentil soup! My favorite is the one from Trader Joe's in the big can. All vegetarian, inexpensive, high protein, and DELICIOUS!! My surgeon is a huge fan of lentils post surgery - calls them one of nature's most perfect foods. He says that fish is the other perfect food. Not sure if you are lacto-ovo, vegan, or a pescetarian, but if fish figures into your plan at all, it is a great back-up protein once you get to soft foods. I also do non-fat vanilla greek yogurt, mixed with PB2 (powdered peanut butter). The combo packs a huge protein punch and is absolutely delicious! Cottage cheese is also great in the soft food phase.

    Vegetarian post op

If your just a vegetarian (not vegan) then your in for a treat. Almost everything you can eat in phase 1 is vegetarian. My Protein shakes are whey based. I can drink milk with them. I will eat cream Soups with milk mixed in. I plan on drinking the 3 oz of Protein shake every hour as recommended by my dr. This, along with the Soup, will basically be my whole protein for the 1st 4 weeks. Then I can start soft foods (eggs, tuna, mashed potatoes, pudding, yogurt - all vegetarian) It's pretty basic during the first phase. IF your dr has you on liquids only during the 1st phase. You can't eat a burger anyway! Good luck! I'm right behind you. July 16th

    Vegetarian post op

Hi! I am vegetarian and am having my surgery on the 15th. Anyone have ideas for vegetarian protein food in beginning of post op? Thanks
  4. Let me start off by saying I am not looking to be yelled at or coddled...something in between might be helpful. As some of you know I landed in the hospital 2 weeks ago because I got severely dehydrated. They also ran a pregnancy test which came back positive, but it was a false positive. I am definitely not pregnant. I do not know what is going on, but I have been totally out of control since then. Prior to that I had been drinking & getting in my Protein just fine. (Aside from a bread incident many a month ago in case NurseGrace is lurking ) I am full blown eating whatever I want with no problems. I am a vegetarian so no meat binges. I have not been drinking Water & I have been straight up eating , garbage...crackers, chips, pop corn with butter, Pasta, Cookies, candy, ice cream & so on & so forth. I have no desire for anything except carbs & sugar. I'm not eating bread or anything that will cause physical pain to my sleeve, but things that if eaten slowly enough cause no problems. I'm not drinking water or exercising. Today the only liquid I had was 2 cups of coffee this morning. I still weigh myself every day. Although I haven't lost any weight, I haven't gained any weight either. I have been under a lot of stress lately...waiting for our mortgage to approved, looking for work, struggling to finish my semester which I was given an extension on. At this point I am ready to just give up on everything. I am ready to give up on school, looking for work, cleaning & packing up our apartment. I am feeling like I just completely lost control & I don't know how to get it back. I don't want to go to OA. Been there, done that. Therapy is not an option either. Has anyone else been through this? I feel like I'm so lost that I just don't even know where to start to get back some semblance of normality.

    Vegetarian food

I was sleeved on 6/4. I get most of my protein from dairy and vegetarian sources. If by veggie foods you mean Morningstar, Boca, etc., I tried to eat a Morningstar griller patty last week and ended up in pain. They are kind of dry, and didn't feel too comfy in my sleeve. The week before I was able to eat a chickpea patty, and it didn't cause any trouble (but only 1/4 of it sure did fill me up). Products will vary.
  6. I'm 4 weeks out and have tried a little bit of vegetarian chicken since I can't have chicken yet. Has any body else tried veggie food? And is this safe?
  7. It has now been a full month where I have had at least 80g of protein/day - something I have never done before in my life. I'm not really a vegetarian - but I never had a craving for meat and wasn't consuming enough beans, etc to make up for it. I was lucky that my nutri gave me a sample packet of vanilla unjury and I liked it well enough. I use that and strawberry from Optimum Nutrition and I vary btwn the two at home and will try most pre made ones if I'm out and few have been so bad (to me) that I didn't just get it down. Consuming way more protein actually has me craving meat more. Excited for the day I can start having it again.

    The 5:2 diet

There are so many temptations in life! I lost another pound... Yeah! But have a birthday party out at Olive Garden tonight....and Im a vegetarian, so no chicken breast choices for me... most likely salad and ?(cake!) I have taken the position that I go out to dinner for company, not the food, but it is disappointing where there is nothing I can eat that is on my plan. Makes it that much harder. Maybe soup? I will have to go on line and look at the menu. Usually in a place like that the veg choices are pasta. Well, I do have fast day tomorrow, so that will pull things back in soon! Hope I can keep that one pound off!

Frequent air travel with lap band

i would personally disregard any doctor's advice to not eat or drink during a long flight. I fly internationally (12 hours each flight) and would not want to risk dehydration or the immense thirst not drinking for 12 hours (or more, if delayed!!!) would provoke. As for eating: If you can drink (and really there is no reason you wouldn't be able to drink---just don't go get a big fill right before getting in an airplane !), drink. If you can eat, eat the band-friendly stuff they serve. Much of what is on offer on airplanes is not band-friendly for me (bread, Pasta, rice-based dishes) so I pack my own food in my carryon. I pack Protein bars and Protein powder, fruit and nuts. Or sometimes I'll preorder a vegetarian option but that often come with pasta or rice, neither of which I eat. So my advice when flying is to not worry about a too-tight band, but do bring on your own food especially for a longhaul flight. And sip sip sip Water all through the flight.

    Weigh in on beans

Beans are great! I try to go the vegetarian route as much as I can in an uncooperative household, so I eat different kinds of beans often. Very filling, very nutritious! I have fallen in love with hummus; I suppose that could be considered a slider, but the raw veggies I dip in it are not, so it works out.

    Marriot popcicles!

Here's another Marriot sleeve menu bulletin, heads up vegetarians: You can order vegetable broth! I had it tonight. It was super salty, so I poured about half of it out and diluted it with water. But it tasted good.

    Chinese Soups

Well I guess the new term for me would be pescatarian! I don't eat any land animals! Funny that they have a name for that now! Usually when I say I'm a vegetarian people say "do you eat chicken"? Haha

    Chinese Soups

I come from a long line of committed carnivore so I do not understand the subtleties of vegetarianism. How is seafood ok on a vegetarian diet? just curious
  16. PaNailGirl

    Chinese Soups

They have been great on the full liquid phase! I'm a vegetarian so I had veggie and bean curd soup and today I had seafood soup! The seafood soups is wonderful! It's a clear broth, but full of veggies and seafood! I think I'm going to purée the seafood and put it back in since I can handle cream soups just fine! Great protein I'm sure!! Oh it even has egg whites!
  17. im writing to you from indiaand im a vegetarian so its been really hard to get my proteins but what i did was boil half cup piggeon pea lentil with five times water and salt and drink that throughout the day during clear liquid stage and then drink the lentil itself during full liquid stage.the other thing i did during clear liquid stage was mix one tbsp yogurt with water and salt and blend and drink that for protein.during mushy food stge it was yogurt, lentils, boiled egg and greek yogurt and cottage cheese for me.at thid stage i was able to find chocolate flavour protein shake by GNC which saved my life.all the best to you.
  18. When was your surgery? I am 2 months post op. My eating is pretty much the same every day: Breakfast: Protein shake (Premier Protein - Chocolate; 160 cals, 30g protein, 1g carb) morning snack: a cheese stick OR some veggie straws (a lower carb solution to potato chips when I'm craving something salty) with hummus *snack depends on if I'm feeling a lil hungry or if I'm at work vs. at home - much easier to have the cheese stick at work! Lunch: greek yogurt. I like Fage - 0% with strawberry or the new Fruyo blended kind with pineapple. a piece of fruit - I've been hitting up the farmers market, so I have variety. Peaches, berries, cantaloupe, apple... *If I have an apple for lunch, it's usually with Peanut Butter, so that's all I'll have with the yogurt. and when the mood strikes, I have sandwiches - I use Flatout Flatbread, half a slice, which is only 45-50cals and 8-9 carbs. I usually have hummus on it with turkey, avocado, spinach.. whatever I have. It's small portions, though, obviously! Dinner: This is where I change up my routine. I make homemade Soups, or something with eggs (mini quiche, scrambles, etc), I also like vegetarian options (but I'm not a vegetarian), especially anything by the brand Gardein. Their burgers are AMAZINGLY good - taste like the real thing, with wayyy less fat/calories! and then I'll have another shake at some point in the afternoon/evening to keep my protein intake up. I think it's important to get your fresh fruits and veggies in - as soon as I was able to include that in my diet, I was much more "regular" with my bathroom business (if ya catch my drift). Hope that helps!

    June Post Ops!

Hey now! Have completed 3 days of work and i have to be honest it has taken a lot of the wind out of my sails . Just call me Chef Boy RJ ( Im such a geek ) Have a great Day RJ
  20. If you eat meat (I don't), I have heard lots of people say that they like the Wendy's chili while on the road. You could blenderize it or just be sure to chew it really, really well and eat slowly. You could also do mashed potatoes, but you are better off focusing on protein. Soups are great during the puree phase. I am a vegetarian and I really like the Morningstar protein products--the vegetarian meatballs and vegetarian breakfast "sausage" especially. Those early post-op seem to find that they set better than animal protein and they are easy to heat up if you are going to have a fridge and microwave. I like to heat the protein "meat"balls with a little ricotta and marinara plus some parm and/or mozz cheese (just a bit for a protein and flavor boost). Also, Greek yogurt is a great source of protein during the puree stage. You can add half a scoop of protein powder to boost the protein. Laughing Cow soft cheese wedges are a lifesaver too. You can also do refried beans topped with some cheese. Even Taco Bell has them if you need to do fast food while traveling. Good luck and have a good vacation!
  21. I wanna live where you are! I want milk straight from the farmer. How do you keep up with this? Is it due to allergies? My little one is a vegetarian and it is very difficult for me to cook three different dinners daily but I eat 4 oz my daughter doesn't eat meat and my son is 16 and eat everything all the time. It sounds like you are able to juggle many different needs or preferences. What do you use to sweeten anything, besides cane sugar? I have tried agave and stevia but they don't taste very good. Sorry your post caught my interest so I have a ton of questions.

    Greens just PostOpp

The one thing we Indian vegetarians drink a lot is lentil Water.boil half cup of green or yellow pigeon pea with 5 times water and salt.and drink the liquid during clear liquid phase and when on mushy phase have the mushy lentil too much Protein in that.the other thing I did was blend water n salt with little bit yogurt and drink that.hope it helps.you can write to me incase you want vegetarian Indian recipes.
  23. Ahh it makes sense then. My partner is vegetarian and he had protein shakes every morning to supplement his protein intake. I think I would too if I didn't eat meat (but I do lol)
  24. Ms.S, I do a lot of my own cooking. My husband cooks for himself most of the time because we eat so differently, and I cook for him once in a while. Cooking can be fun, and you don't have to make a big meal or sometimes I make enough to have left overs for lunch or dinner the next day. (Then I dont have to cook then!) I make stir fry, non pasta lasagnas (using stips of yellow squash). When its hot, I just make it on the stovetop in an iron skillet... in winter I turn on the oven. It tastes so good! I am a vegetarian, and really, if your not eating a lot of pasta, bread and carbs, then it makes it hard to eat out or get stuff to go. I have to cook if its going to be healthy, at least most of the time. I have found a couple of websites and cook books that get me going in the right direction, and really, I make the same things for weeks on end, then switch to something else if I get tired of it. Salads, soups, stir fry, layered skillet casserols, crock pot dishes....oatmeal based dishes (sweet or savory) I also have snacks around that wont kill my diet... walnuts, genisoy crackers and a variety of cheeses... pickles... I just made Yuba (soy skin) BBQ ribs... they are pretty dry, like jerkey, and high in protein, veggie, and a great snack. They are as close to junk food as you can get without being junky! I just pop them in a lidded jar and have one when I really want something not so good for me. Even if you just cook once a week, and eat from that, with planing it really works well. Make it fun, a new hobby!
  25. I developed lactose intolerance, too. First find a lactose free shake. I mix with coffee, tea, Water, soy milk, hemp milk, juice...just find something that works with your shake. This will help immensely. Then you just shift to a Protein heavy diet, and yes, it's a challenge in soft foods. Scrambled eggs...but you likely won't be able to hold much of them because they're dense. I ate tuna, refried Beans, soy yogurt, hardboiled eggs (and egg salad)...things like that. Some time before a year I was able to eat hard cheeses again. Now I only have to avoid ice cream, heavy cream (including sauces made with it) and a glass of milk. I can have small amounts of Lactaid milk on Cereal or in a sauce or something but I can't have it alone. You can try the pills and see if they help. You can also see if the Lactaid milk, cottage cheese, etc. will work for you. They don't work for me at all. Also remember that there's only a trace amount of dairy (or none at all) in fake dairy products made for vegans and vegetarians. There are options out there, you just have to find what works for you. ~Cheri
