  1. I'm a previous bandster who is thinking about getting the VSG. I was supposed to have my band swapped out for a new one but due to complications it was not possible. This happened in Nov'09. I am supposed to tell the doc this month how I want to proceed for a revision. He said we could try the band again, RNY, VSG, or nothing. My insurance doesn't cover VSG but I have been looking into it since he mentioned it. I'm looking for any long term data on the VSG! It seems impossible. I looked on the OH page and its only goes back to Apr'09 which doesn't help. I don't want to jump on the band(no pun intended) wagon. I know no WLS is permanent or truly long term but I would like to know if I will be on somebody surgical table 5 yrs from now because this went wrong. I know when I go back in I want to have some kind of tool, if not the VSG then I will be re-banded. By the time, it needs to be replaced again, maybe I will have a gauge on just how successful the VSG really is...or I will regret not doing it the 1st time (but hey by then my insurance should cover it).
  2. I had RNY bypass 12/08/17. Loved everything about my surgery team and surgeon. On Feb. 23rd I ended up in my local ER in excruciating pain. I was suffering from a large hernia. The local ER tried to blame it on my RNY. I was sent onto Riverside Hospital and was cared for by my original surgeon from Dec. The hernia was due to gallbladder surgery 25+ years ago. My diet has suffered a slight setback from the additional surgery, but I’m finally getting better. I can’t say enough good things about Dr Rana and Riverside Methodist Hospital.
  3. My bestie had gastric bypass in 99...she has had each surgery separately since 2000-2012...lots of money...lots of pain, but she swears it is worth it...she's had the arms, the thighs, the tummy tuck, the butt lift, the chin area, whole body lift...she is very pleased with the results, but she does have significant scarring...she's pale & doesn't try to tan to hide the scars... I would follow my dr's advice if I were you...best of luck to you! Congrats on your success.

    RNY in one month

Hi everyone i had a gastric band fitted in 2009. Was great for a while but sadly, blockages and breakages (from a faulty batch) and I have given up. I started at 260lbs, down to 175 with the band, now back up to 225 so time to stop that growth! i have a revision to a RNY (Fobi pouch type) on 14 December - and today heard insurance will pay 20% which is great news. The bypass involved no special diet, really, so am a bit apprehensive: protein drinks (less variety here in New Zealand I think), dumping, and having the RNY by open surgery not laparoscopic - all make be a bit nervous... Thanks to you all for keeping me company on this journey.

Stabbing pain at incision site 1.5 months out

I had mini gastric bypass surgery. On October 10th and my surgeon instructed me not to lift anything heavy for six months. Sent from my LG-K430 using the BariatricPal App
  8. When I started my journey, I was going to have the band. But with my first visit with the surgeon, he suggested the sleeve and my insurance had just recently approved coverage for it. I came home and did my research. After weighing the risk and complications of both surgery and discussing with my husband-I chose the sleeve. I am so grateful for making that decision. I have no limitations on food except for what I chose. I am following my diet closely and have lost 56 pounds so far and I have only been sleeved for 3 months. I have never vomited, regurtitated, slimed my food. I don't have to make appointments for fills/worry about slippage/rejection/breakage. Some people are very succesful with the band-but I have only seen one-everyone else I know has had complications and had revisions to the sleeve. I know you will need to make your own decision and good luck but I do not regret having the sleeve instead of the band.

    GERD causing revision

I'm in the same boat, sort of. I was sleeved 2 years ago and immediately had severe GERD with the worst symptoms when my stomach was empty, so my weight loss was slow and I've regained the little I lost. I was supposed to be having revision to bypass in April, but that was postponed due to the pandemic. At this point, I'm just waiting until they can start scheduling surgeries again, hopefully by the end of June. My surgeon said my weight loss should be closer to 50-60 lbs, which I think I'd be happy with. I have regretted going for the sleeve since day one and am hoping that bypass alleviates some of GERD symptoms.

    soooo excited!!

Hi Jamie Is your appointment so that you can discuss getting the sleeve rather than the Bypass? If so, I know you'll love your sleeve. I was a little apprehensive when getting mine since I'd already gone through WLS before with my band. I was worried it wouldn't work for me like my band didn't work for me. So far it has proven me sooo wrong! I love my sleeve!!!!

how fast is the weight loss?

Oh my dear, it's so variable! I'm 4 months post and down 45, I seem to be losing slow compared to most on here but I have no problems with any food and I feel great so I'll take it! I'm 5'6, started at 255, shooting for 150, currently 210. I am a revision from a lap band and was warned revisions tend to lose slower... I highly recommend not comparing our journey to others though,it'll drive you crazy!!!!! Good luck!!!!! HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 210
  12. Hello! Am so excited to have my sleeve surgery on Tuesday September 20, 2011. I would love to hear from anyone with a date around mine. I would also be so grateful to a mentor to help me through this. I had two previous lap band revisions due to a slip and have since decided to have the band removed. I am afraid at failing yet another surgery, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Revision sleeve to bypass

I am not an expert with insurance requirements. I suspect they might resist approval unless there is an underlying condition that needs to be corrected by revision. In your case the condition might be constant heartburn. This condition might be GERD. The sleeve will generally make this condition worse and that may be the logic for a revision.

    Revision sleeve to bypass

My insurance covers revision as long as it's medically necessary. So like the other gal said if you can prove that it's medically necessary to cure your GERD it won't matter what your BMI is because they'll look at it as a procedure not a weight loss surgery. I'm getting a revision to the bypass because of complications from my sleeve. They approved it in less than a day. And I'm only 167 pounds Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. Congrats! I had Cigna too but it was a little harder for me to get approved since I had a revision. You will love the sleeve! I am so happy for you!
  16. Interesting articles. I had revision surgery for a slipped lap band and had a new lap band placed 1 1/2 years ago. The new band slipped twice and I had my lap band removed totally a month ago. I'm sure that is a complication of revision surgery because my surgeon said that I had so much scar tissue from my previous surgeries that the scar tissue pushed my band up into my esophagus. Certainly this is a complication of revision surgery?
  17. Hello Everybody. I am new also to this posting. I am almost 54 years old. I had a gastric bypass in 1984. I loss about 90 pounds within two years. I have gain about 50 pounds since then. I wonder If I can get the lap band surgery after having the bypass?
  18. Did anyone else see the news about lap-band being approved for lower BMI patients? Here is a link to one of the articles: http://www.stltoday.com/news/national/bf0ef1ec-62b7-5f8e-adec-5151c1de71b5.html I suppose it is good that BMI requirements are coming down for some weight loss surgery, but as a lap-band revision hopeful, I am really concerned about how the news media is covering all this. The article says there are only 2 weight loss surgery options: lap band and gastric bypass. I don't know, with all the lap-band billboards and this news coverage, I am really frustrated that there isn't more real information out there. I am so glad this board is here - it has given me hope of a better option. Have a great weekend, everybody!

    GERD

I was advised to get the bypass instead of sleeve because of my GERD. My date isn't till December 5th. Hopefully it'll cured it and give me finally relief. It's actually the only reason I'm going with the bypass. Sent from my SM-N910V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Why didn't you just listen

hi - i went to my 1rst seminar/conference a few months ago. I had only heard of the lapband & the "big" gastric bypass. I was so excited to get the lapband ASAP. I also had never heard of the numerous problems involved with the lapband, Erosion, band slipping etc. At the very end of the meeting the dr. mentioned the sleeve, he even mentioned he prefers it over other WLS. It sounded kindof good, got me thinking and reading. when i saw him and started to talk to him, i realized the sleeve was for me and i was really happy. I had never heard of the "sleeve" - i know its relatively new, well to the normal public, i know its been around. i guess i'm just saying, i don't think the sleeve is advertised enough, people don't know of it, they only know of the lapband (which i agree should become extinct) and the gastric bypass. People are just not informed - and yes the dr. should speak to all, asking them about there choice, have they researched enough. Make them aware of other options. This is obviously a big decision and they need to be totally knowledgable. Anyways, my DOS was 12/15/11 - and i'm very happy and looking forward to a great journey and happy future where you all will see less of me. kathy PS not sure why this is ranting and raving ) i'm just following the suit with discussion

    GERD

My bypass was done because of GERD and hiatal hernia that had to be repaired. The Dr said I wasn’t a good candidate for the Nissen because of the likelihood of having to be redone and didn’t present the sleeve or band as real options due to making GERD worse. It was actually very interesting to find that gastric bypass was developed over 50 years ago as a cure for reflux. Only after did they start realizing how much weight patients lost and it became a weight loss surgery primarily, but my surgeon said that about 50% of the cases in his office (huge Britain clinic at Stanford hospital) are due to something other than weight loss.

    Questions?

I have completed my 6 months of medically supervised weight loss. I am weighting for my tax return so that I can go to the exercise specialist, dietician, and nutritionist. I still need to see the psychologist. I will more than likely have to go through pre-op testing again because I last did some of it on August 26. So I am really worried that this is all too good to be true right now. So with that being said, how much longer do you think it would be until I can schedule my surgery? Or at least, can anyone tell me if they were near the point that I am right now, how long it took them? I didn't think I would ever get to this point. I am really wondering though, I am currently 5'9" and I am flirting with 340lbs. I have a larger bone structure and I was wondering what a good size for me to shoot for would be. I kept saying I would love to be a size 10, but I'm wondering if that's too little. I currently wear a 24, sometimes 26 pants, and a 3x top. I also know that everyone is different. My sister had the gastric bypass back in 2000, and she was a 5x, she got down to a size 18 and looked unhealthy. I am worried that I will do that too. Any input will help right now! This is just all over the place, but I was practically typing what I was thinking at the time! Sorry!

    Video of sleeve proceedure

That's a great video! For us Band to Sleeve Revisions, here is one that is also narrated and describes the procedure as it goes along!
  25. I’m having a revision to RNY from the sleeve (2012). I’m considered a “lower” BMI. I have extreme GERD. I had to have the PH test done, which was horrible and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Also, had to have an upper GI done. I have a hernia and a hiatal hernia. I was approved in a couple days and am scheduled for surgery January 29th. Best of luck to you.
