    Had surgery 4/13

Good morning! Like you, my schedule is always on the go go go. I was worried about maintaining the pre-op diet after returning to work, which admittedly I have not done yet as much surgery was just 2 days ago. However I started the diet before leaving for surgery, and was able to successfully eat on the go and still fit in line with the diet. My office has a cafeteria, but we also have plenty of restaurants on the good. I would bring just a small sandwich bag of 1 scoop of unflavored protein powered and mix it with soup broth I would buy from the cafe or restaurant. I was able to successfully keep up this way. I also purchased things I could leave there, like Greek yogurt single serve cups, or oatmeal packets. The option I favor is packing a full day's worth of meals in my lunchbox thought but totally understand that this is not always a possibility!

    HELP Liquid Diet!!!!!!

Hi! I was banded on July 1st, and have lost about 100 lbs so far....hang in there, YOU CAN DO THIS!! more importantly..you NEED TO DO THIS...the pre op liquid diet is to shrink your liver, and make your surgery safer..the post op is to let your body heal...seriously...it aint pretty, but you need to do this...birighter days are coming! so... I do basically 2 shakes...(still) I like the EAS shakes..great Protein, low carb, you can get them at bjs... now I get the choc. ones, but I really like the strawberry.. I also do te EAS Protein powder... so for the choc ones, I use a shake a scoop of powder, a half banana, and a scoop of pbutter...(yum) I also do a berry variation a scoop of vanilla powder, a splash of v8 splash, some frozen berries, and a few scoops of greek yogurt, or an eas shake...you can mix it up by changing the flavors, but make sure to keep it hi protein..it will keep you fuller longer..... I would do this again in a heartbeat...it aint perfect, but its the best option out there!

    HELP Liquid Diet!!!!!!

Each physician has their own diet plan pre and post op. My physician had me on Clear liquids (broth, sf Jello, sf popcicles, low cal juice) plus the Optifast for two weeks prior to banding. My banding was on Dec. 29th. I have followed a clear liquid diet since the banding with no Optifast. Tomorrow I have my first post op visit. I will then be able to eat creamed Soups, sf pudding, low fat yogurt, cream of wheat, and vegetable juices. One thing that was very helpful....I have a small ice cream freezer (one that sits on the counter). I freeze the container so it's aways ready. Put the vanilla Optifast in and blend for about 10 minutes. The result tastes just like a Wendy's Frosty. It is delicious. That was my treat every evening. I have two cases of the Optifast left and will not use it. If you are interested, or know anyone interested, I would be glad to give a good deal. (Case vanilla + case chocolate). Good luck with you new way of life.
  6. I just had my surgery on Feb 28th, this past monday and I had the same concern. I will tell you that after surgery you aren't in the mood to eat. Today I am 4 days out and I can tell I am healing fast. My doctor only required me to be on liquids the day of surgery and then move to a puree diet. I have been able to eat ham salad, egg salad, yogurt, soup, etc. The amazing thing is that after 1/2 cup to a cup you are full and satisfied. You still have yourold head playing tricks on you and wanting you to eat more so I suggest you measure your food and keep it at a 1/2 cup total at a sitting or it will not be comfortable!! So far I have been able to stay satisfied and not feel hungrey all the time. You have to make smart choices and it is hard in the puree stage because you can't eat a normal healthy diet. It is wonderful I must say and congrats on your up coming banding!! Time to start feeling good again!

    Today's my surgery day!!

Ended up staying a bit longer at the hospital because of pain but I'm home now. Having a rough time getting in and out of bed or getting comfortable. Gas has been kind of a pain but all manageable. I'm really surprised at how normal I mostly feel. Other than the gas pain and incision pain I feel like myself. Was able to get down part of a protein shake and a light and fit yogurt smoothie as well as most of my water. Just got to remember to take small sips lol otherwise it doesn't feel great. 8. Hi Chin and welcome to the forum. My surgeon recommended starting with about 2 oz. As for mashed food (also called mushies or soft foods) here are some ideas I received from my doctor's office: Soft food should be the consistency of a thick liquid (no chunks or solid material ) and it should be chewed very well before swallowing until it is a liquid consistency ) Tofu Low fat cottage cheese Cereal oatmeal Precooked pureed rice Low fat Yogurt Yogurt mixed with fruit very well blended Cream Soups eggs Boiled pureed fruit ( example pear, apple ) Watermelon, papaya or melon in small pieces Boiled pureed vegetables Beans I also bake a sweet potato until it's very soft/mushy and eat some of it with a tiny bit of butter. Hope that helps some - am sure others will have a lot more suggestions too.

    Tips for Meals

We had surgery around the same time. I relied on refried beans with a bit of shredded parm on top. That was a staple until I could tolerate more dense foods. Little by little, one food at a time. Also ate cottage cheese regularly. Still do. I find that in the morning I still can't stomach anything too solid, so usually have yogurt (plain Greek) or cottage cheese. Later on, you can add some peach or pear to those. Learning new proper portion sizes takes time. You are on the right track using smaller dishes and utensils. I have to measure everything because I have no sense of what 3-4 ounces of food looks like. I can usually eat about 3 ounces at a time. Like you, I was raised to believe that wasting food is a sin. I try very hard to make only what I can eat. It does get easier.

If you like ranch dressing you can make ranch dip for veggies with the dry dressing seasoning mix and plain Greek yogurt. Also I mixed PB Fit into vanilla Greek yogurt and dipped apple slices Into it.

2 weeks after sleeve need advice

I'm not sure how much I can help as I've only a week out of my surgery 7/30. This is what I've found out, sometimes things taste bad because your body is going through Ketosis, burning fat, and that will give you a funny taste in your mouth making things taste different or bad. It will also change your breath so brushing or sugar-free mints will help. I take my protein Ensure Max a 1/3 container at a time. It is a couple of sips and put it on ice so the ice melts and thins it. If Yogurt fills you that is fine just make it a good one. I haven't slept more than 4 hours since the surgery and the dreams are so vivid. I'm lucky as I am retired so I can fit in a short nap. The "meal plans" that doctors give out are nice but not necessarily what you will be eating. Just make sure you have a lot of protein, keeps up energy, and fluids. I drink caffeine-free ice tea all day. Just sips at a time. When I had my lap band on I was on a protein drink in the am. Campbells Soup on the Go for lunch and protein drink for dinner for almost a year. I'd add a small cottage cheese for a snack. You seem to be doing alright just watch your protein and water. I'm glad I'm not the only one that is sleeping less.

    Snack

Cheese, nuts, deli meat, greek yogurt with or without chia seeds, cucumbers or red bell peppers with tzatziki or just plain, celery with peanut butter or cream cheese and everything but the bagel seasoning, apples and peanut butter... if you tell us what foods you DO like maybe we can give you better suggestions?

    food question...

Hi! I also eat pretty much everything, except for doughy breads. I am hesitant to order red meat out, since it sometimes gets me stuck. I tend to order fish when I'm out, since I love it and it goes down very well! Bread is fine if it's crunchy or toasted, tortillas work decently well, and very thin crust pizza also works. As a general rule though, I steer clear of breads. I get full fast enough that I'd rather eat something else most of the time! During mushies, I really enjoyed healthy Soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes (with Greek yogurt as sour cream), mashed yams, and fat free refried Beans with cheese. I have some good soup recipes posted on my blog if you're interested. Hope that helps! :smile2: Catherine

    High Protein Diet

If you know anyone who has a costco membership; they have a ready to drink chocolate Protein shake/drink by Premier. It has 30 grams protein for 140 calories. I think it tastes pretty good. When looking at Protein shakes you want higher grams of protein for the calories. In regards to yogurt look for Greek style as it has more protein than the regular stuff. I buy fat free with fruit and add several tablespoons of vanilla whey Isolate Protein powder plus some Splendra (greek style is more sour). In regards to "healthfood stores" I find that Vitamin Shoppe has much better prices than GNC (even with their buy one get one half price).

    Protein!

Every protein shake I have tried tastes terrible to me. I am almost a week out. Anyone have any good suggestions? I have been eating cottage cheese, Greek yogurt and soups that are all liquified down, but really struggling to get my proteins and water in. My mid-back aches and I just don't feel hungry. I am starting to feel a little weak. I have only urinated twice today. Anyone have any good advice?

    Why Can't I Lose Weight?

I am also 4 months out & have hit a wall with my weight loss. I'm down 74 lbs & very happy about that but I have 90 more to go!!! This is supposed to be the time we are dropping it like it's hot! I blame my plateau on cheating on my diet, not getting enough Water in, & not exercising enough. Sooooo...I'm back on the horse & starting drinking Protein shakes again, parking at the far end of the lot, and putting myself on a food & supplement schedule. I have 5 alarms on my phone that go off every time it's time for me to take my supplements and/or eat. I'm also squeezing exercise in wherever I can. I brought an 8lb dumbbell set to work and do arm exercises during down time. I also do butt clenches & squats. I get very weird looks from my co-workers, but screw it! I'm loving all the new found energy I have everyday! I'm pretty much living on Protein Shakes, egg whites, grilled chicken, tuna salad, G2 & Powerade Zero, & Greek yogurt. That's really all we can do, right?? But you should be proud of 50 lbs, that's 50 lbs less your carrying around! Good job!!
  19. Are you getting 60oz+ of protein and at least 64oz fluid? This will help with energy and healing. Pudding and jello have NO nutritional value. Add unflavored protein powder to your soups if you aren't already. Cream soups with Unjury protein, shakes, Greek yogurt and cottage cheese were all still staples for me at 4 weeks. You are still healing....It will get better I didn't feel normal till 3 months out.

    Getting Banded Monday

I'm fabulous. The only reason I am tho is because my doctor advances diets very fast. I'm on a full diet as of this Wednesday. I get my protein through Oikos yogurt, Stonyfield Farms makes it. There is 17g of protein in one 7 ounce cup. I eat two of those a day, and then a can of tuna and I'm good. The only thing is tho, you have to add a packet of Splenda or something...it's kinda nasty otherwise.

    Cant Get In My Protein

At two weeks out my NUT was not worried about me getting in all my protein. I was lucky if I got in 20-30 grams a day at two weeks. It's more important to keep up your fluid intake and get in protein when you can. As you get farther out, you'll be able to add more and more protein in, especially with foods. I think it took me almost two months before I was getting in 60 grams of protein. Now, at three months out, I'm getting in 60-80 grams a day because you can eat more things heavier in protein like chicken, tuna, meats, cheeses, yogurt, etc. I also throw in a Quest or Simple Truth protein bar occasionally if I feel like I'm a little low on protein - especially if I am going to be working out later as I need the energy. While most protein bars also have higher carbs, they are okay in moderation especially if you are going to be active.

    Encouragement needed struggling

I wasn't even allowed any solids until 40 days post-op and it was slow going once I was. Trying to get in 4 oz. seems overly ambitious with how far out you are right now. Hell, I can only manage 2-4 oz. of meat and I'm almost 6 months out at this point. I can do better with more liquidy things, but straight up meat is still hard to get down in any significant quantity. I think my only "meal" right now that is over 4 ounces is greek yogurt, so that hardly counts.

    Frustrated with eating!

I am with James on this one, you may be advancing sooner than your tummy will allow. I struggled terribly on pureed stage. I would gag and puke and I (now) I believe it was more of an aversion to pureed meats, eggs and fish. I still 22 months later have an aversion to eggs because of the pureed stage. I would still with Soups, cottage cheese, applesauce, cream of wheat, Protein shakes. Anything that will slip down vs. have to swallow. For me it took some time before my pouch even appreciated meats of any kind. I could eat fish fairly easily but even shrink was difficult. By 8 weeks post op, most if not all my swelling was down and then I was able to start eating ground beef, ground chicken, soft juicy chicken breast in a mushroom gravy, thinks like that.....another month down the road it got easier and easier. But my suggestion would be to go back to creamy Proteins like cottage cheese, yogurt, refried Beans, unsweetened applesauce, and definately protein shakes at this stage. Premier Protein for me were the best because they had a whopping 30 grams of protein and only 1 gram of sugar. I had to actually add lactose free milk to them in the beginning so it would take me almost a whole day to drink 1 shake. Best of luck to you and I promise it really does get better, if for some reason you can't get even softer foods down like I suggested then there is more going on and you might have a stricture. I would check with your doctor if that becomes a problem. Your tummy just needs a little longer to heal and honestly it will be better for you in the long run.

    Frustrated with eating!

Thanks for the advice! It is crazy cause foods like Soup, cottage cheese, eggs, canned chicken, anything with yellow cheese all make me sick. I can eat Cereal, yogurt, Protein shakes, applesauce, canned fruit, mashed potatoes, crab meat, shrimp and white rice with no problem. It gets to the point when I eat certain foods or try a new food that the pain is so intense I have to make myself get sick to feel any relief. I think I'm going to lean back on Phase 2 and still have the foods that I know work in phase 3 until I see my doctor August 11th. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G925A using the BariatricPal App
  25. I just realized I was supposed to post this in pre-surgery weight loss. Is there a way for me to move the post? Sorry for the mistake? Hello everyone, I need to lose 50 pounds before I go for my sleeve surgery so I am at a better BMI to make it safer. They set me up with a nutritionist for medical weight loss. Pretty much, I am to have 3 protein shakes a day and 2 small snacks in between like low fat cheese, and egg, low fat yogurt, etc... I have been sticking to this diet completely with no cheats. The first week I did great and lost 10 pounds. I am toward the end of my second week and the scale is showing I am only down point 8... I don't see how this is even possible. I have failed on so many diets on the past. I failed using phentermine and so many weight loss drugs. I am so worried that there is something about me that just can't lose weight. Ugh I am so disappointed and worried. Has anyone experienced this or have advice for me?
