    Gastric Bypass for Senior Citizen

My mom had gastric bypass at age 65 and had zero complications and lost 150 lbs. at first I was concerned due to her age, but I think it was good because it extended her life and improved her quality of life

    Thermage anyone?

My wrinkles on my face and neck are much less noticeable almost 3 years post-gastric bypass due to applying & re-applying sunscreen EVERYDAY, using Tretinoin, putting Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides (bought at Costco) in my coffee every morning after my derm recommended it, and Fraxel laser resurfacing. All of these things help build and/or prevent loss of collagen, and improve fine lines, wrinkles, skin tone and laxity. I look so much younger now based on reactions from people who haven’t seen me in awhile. If you’re thinking of getting Thermage or laser treatments, please make sure to do so with a board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon to ensure your money is well spent and to minimize post-procedure issues/complications. Good luck with your anti-aging journey after WLS. 😀

    shoulder pain after eating/drinking

I had the sleeve, not the band, but the pain eventually subsided. It’s been a few months now and I don’t remember when I last had it. I’m very glad it’s over because it had me very worried. my doc won’t even perform lap band anymore. He says they cause way too many complications. He’s very much pro sleeve sayin that he's seen so much success with the sleeve in his patients. at our information meeting he talked a woman out of getting the band because he said weight loss was not significant enough and most people end up having it removed in the end and regain all the weight. If you do remove your band, consider the sleeve. I highly recommend it. good luck in your journey.

    Effect on families

These post are permanent and the Internet never forgets... I'm still not sure who exactly this cautionary tale is for? Spouses of patients? Surely not the patients here who knowing their pitfalls decide to work on them. have done their research and rigorously pass all evaluations. We. Are. Prepared. Frankly, if your spouse had heart or knee surgery with complications and fell into the well of addiction and depression, you likely would not be on forums for that type of support saying you hate cardiothoracic or orthopaedic surgery. Perhaps the better cautionary tales : Life is like castles built in the sand You never truly know someone Divorce is possible Otherwise your monologues are falling on deaf, but well informed, ears good day.

I had cold feet before my surgery, but I'm here a year later to say that I had NO PAIN, NO COMPLICATIONS, and the surgery worked. Good luck with your surgery (my birthday is 1/23)

    Post 21-day leak

Oh my gosh, I am so sorry to hear this. I can imagine that you are just ready to get back to any sense of normalcy. Complications are so hard and this sounds very extreme. I hope you find some normalcy soon 🙏🏽
  8. I had a revision from VSG to RNY bypass on Monday, 1/13/20. I had major complications with the VSG, and that was the only option. I ended up with a pinched nerve in my left shoulder due to the position my arm was in during the long surgery, so I’ve been on painkillers a bit longer than planned. Enough back story! Today I’m on full liquids for my seconds day. Not my first time at the rodeo with the graduated diet. However, I’m having liquid poo. Cannot trust a fart (lol)! Is this a concern that I should call the dr’s line over the weekend for, or is this a common issue? I go back to his office first thing Tuesday to get my drain out. That’s the first time they’re open again.

My sleeve was done 8/1/14. I had my hernia and esophagus repaired 12/2019. Bypass was the best option. However, not covered by my insurance. I knew this after months of appeals. Now, my surgeons and other doctors would like me have bypass. However, at this point I am not sure that is my best option. My sleeve is "perfect." I just don't want to have more complications. I just want to get healthier and lose more weight. That is happening because I can again barely eat. So, I am going to wait. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. I had my surgery at Bailey Medical in Owasso, OK. Dr. Steven B. Katsis was my surgeon, he was actually suggested to me by my orthopedic doctor, he and Dr. Katsis are very good friends. From the moment I met Dr. Katsis I could tell he was genuine in his compassion and care about his bariatric patients. He and his staff made sure I understood all the steps and the encouragement they provide is a key part of success. I had a very smooth surgery with no complications. If you are in the Tulsa area, I highly recommend him and Bailey Medical.
  11. The problem with GERD is - there can be very serious longterm complications because of it as well. Deciding for revision is tough. How much damage to the esophagus did the EGD show? On how many anti-reflux meds are you now? Do you wake up in the middle of the night? Does the reflux bother you during daytime as well? These are all things that need to be taken into the equation when deciding for revision.
  12. I had mine on 12/23.... I’ve had some complications... even now I’m still on liquids and full Liquids, but I’ve been throwing up Almost daily and have really bad heart burn all the time and some sharp pains in my abdomen.
  13. I am lossing weight after surgery (hernia and esophagus) repair. I had my sleeve done over 5 years ago. GERD was not really a planned issue. However, it's a big issue for me. I think that revsion is good option for many. However, I am scared. I don't want other complications. I spent 5 days in the hospital due to complications with these surgeries. Every doctor was amazed at the great condition of my sleeve. I still have GERD. I still spent a month in pain. I still need to lose weight. Help! 14. oh - and the serious complications you've read about. Very rare. I think you might think they're more common than they really are because people post about those because they're looking for advice and support. People who are 3-5-10-15 years out from surgery generally don't post to let the world know that everything is hunky-dory. I don't personally know anyone who's had any seriously complications, and you'll run into very few people on these and other boards who do. Most complications are minor and appear during the first few months (like strictures - which happen to about 5% of RNY patients). The only things I can think of that might happen long term are bowel obstructions (very rare) and vitamin deficiencies. Almost all vitamin deficiencies are preventable by keeping on top of your vitamins. The only exception I can think of is iron. There are some people whose bodies can't absorb oral iron properly, so they have to get occasional infusions. But other than that....??? Suffice it to say, serious complications are rare. Many of us never have any complications at all, and for those who do, they're almost always minor and "fixable" (I had strictures - one of the most common complications of RNY. I mentioned they happen to 5% of RNY patients. I would hardly call a 5% rate "common", but that does give you some idea of how common problems are. That is, they're not....)
  15. Thank you! My doctor's only option is a revision to bypass. Yes, 100% rate of complication. Anything from a minor UTI to death. Pretty scary....but still..... I appreciate all the input and words of wisdom.
  16. Listen, vertical gastric sleeve is now a very safe procedure with a very low complication rate. If you select a good doctor, your risks for complications are fairly low. There ARE risks, but EVERY procedure has risks. Do your research, find a good doctor, and it is what you and your doctor decide is best for you... then don't let anyone talk you out of it! Your best friend... well, as an ER Nurse, she is seeing patients that have complications. She is not seeing the many many more who do NOT have complications. Her view will be slightly skewed as a result. And she is your friend... she is likely overprotective. My hubby and I are both nurses. He was against me having surgery out of fear of losing me. Nothing rational about it. I chose to have the surgery despite his feelings because I wanted to regain my health and my life. It has only been 4 1/2 months and I am fortunate to say I have surpassed my surgeons expectations with weight loss. The only "complications" I have had are very minor "side effects". First was dizziness due to dehydration. So I worked to improve my hydration. Now I have a different dizziness because I take a medication for my fast heart beat that happens to also be a blood pressure medication. So now my BP is low. The fix? I hold my medication and won't take it unless my BP is higher or my doctor tells me otherwise (waiting to see him). Even still... I am SO grateful I was able to get the surgery and I feel and look great! I also work with others who have had the surgery and they are all doing great as well. None of us regrets doing it. And BTW... a few weeks ago my husband admitted that he is glad I got the surgery afterall and he is so proud of how far I have come with regaining my health. Feel free to use this group to get feedback from others as you need to... but again, your life, your health, your decision.
  17. Complications - I had a leak when I had my gastric sleeve and was in hospital for 3 months. Had several surgeries to put in a stent (didn't work at first - had to have one stitched in place. That one ended up slipping and so had to have it restitched). My whole sleeve was a total flop, so I had the bypass. Yes, there can be complications, but despite them I went back and tried again. The main thing that I wish people knew when having complications is to make sure they have the support of family around them should everything go t i t s up. I had to fly my mum in from the UK to look after my autistic daughter. I knew there was a chance of complications, but I had absolutely zero idea of how that might impact my, my husbands, my daughter's and my mum's life. So... my advice to everyone getting surgery is to make sure you have a good support system in place should the worst happen. THAT is what I wish the surgeons office would emphasize when we sign all of those release forms.

    gastric bypass side effects

complications aren't that common, and most of the ones people get are pretty minor and easily fixable, like strictures. About 5% of bypass patients get a stricture, making it one of the most common complications. I'd hardly call something that 5% of people get "common", but that gives you some idea on how common complications are. They're not. I think a lot of people you're listening to are remembering what bariatric surgery was like 20+ years ago, when it was fairly risky. It's just not anymore. These have come a really long way since then and have become pretty much routine surgeries. On the continuum of "not risky at all" to "super risky", they're WAY on the side of "not risky at all". They're much safer than hip replacement surgeries, for example, and they do those every day. Honestly I think my plastics were probably riskier than my RNY, as far as surgeries go. you are at greater risk staying obese than you are having this surgery. It's when I realized that that I decided to go for it.
  19. I remember having a very dry mouth for a couple of months - just had to sip water continually. I never had prolonged fatigue. I also developed lactose i tolerance. Once I stopped dairy products a lot of my gassiness and bloating resolved. I use plant based or soy products now - no big deal. I was never constipated - if anything, food passed through too quickly. I have the opposite problem with very soft, formed stools 4-5 times a day. They float, so I think there is some fat malabsorption. Of medical complications, I did get blood clots in one leg about a week post op, even though I was up and walking almost immediately after surgery and doing 10,000 steps by day 7. That required 3 months of Xarelto medication. I recently found out that I have an ulcer at the anastamosis, even though I do not drink any alcohol, do not smoke, do not drink soda or coffee, do not take NSAIDS, or have any other risk factors. I am on medication for that and will have another scope done in a couple of months. Those are complications that everyone is told about, and which everyone hopes will not happen to them. But they have not been a big deal to treat. I would still do surgery all over again. My new life is fantastic and I know I have substantially extended both my lifespan and my quality of life. What I am dealing with right now that I am really upset about however, is that I just got a bill from the PA-C, who acted as first assist during my surgery. She is sending a bill through the insurance for the hiatal hernia repair that I also had done, and as an OUT OF NETWORK provider!!!!!!. First of all, I never signed a consent with her, and I chose my doctor partly because he WAS in network. I understand the role of first assist, but they are not surgeons and she should have not submitted a bill that way. So I am all over it. I will pay her a fair IN-NETWORK fee, but not for something I was not informed about nor gave consent for. So THAT is something no one told me about and which I did not expect, especially since this bill came nearly a YEAR after the surgery!

    gastric bypass side effects

That's how I am. I'm not looking forward to it and have actually been looking into ways to lessen the effect xD Was any one terrified of complications during the surgery? I have never had a major surgery before and the thought of complications is the only thing making me super anxious about the surgery itself

    Cold 🥶 Feet 😬

You absolutely can not forget to take your vitamins. This is non negotiable. Set a reminder in your phone if needed. Do whatever it takes to make sure that you get your vitamins in. Otherwise you will have complications for sure. i had emergency c section 39 years ago. It was so bad that I never had another child. I was in pain immediately after sleeve surgery but the pain was not even close to my c section. You will get through it

    Cold 🥶 Feet 😬

I have had two c sections first one was an emergency and it was a little painful than the second so hopefully this surgery goes just like my past surgery’s. No complications and little pain. I guess I’m also scared because I saw a video about skipping vitamins causing tooth loss and brittle bones, this also got me bc I’m not good at taking meds/vitamins. I’m forgetful. I appreciate all the support!

Lap Band Removal and Revision Suggestions Needed

So I had a consult with the surgeon that did my upper GI. He is recommending I revise to the Sleeve. His estimate is I will lose the same amount of weight with the Sleeve or with Bypass, but Bypass has greater risk of complication. I have a couple friends who have the sleeve and didn't loose the weight they wanted to, hit a plateau and have gained back some weight. I'm worried about that. A complication of my band has been GERD, so I am also worried about that continuing if I have the sleeve. The surgeon really seemed to be pushing the sleeve, same with his office staff. But it was the same 10 years ago when I had the lap band, and now that has fallen out of favor...will the same happen with the sleeve? Should I just go with my gut and do the bypass???

1.5 years out & still throwing up?

So I’m now 3 days out from reparative surgery. My surgeon removed scar tissue and converted to a RNY Bypass bc he was not sure he could straighten out my sleeve enough. He also repaired my hiatal hernia. Said he removed a “ball of tissue & mesh.” 😳😳😳 He did say repairs fail sometimes bc that was from my previous hiatal hernia repair. This surgery I got to stay in the hospital for a night. It was great to be supported as I started healing & drinking water. I’m also home with a drain (kinda gross) which he does for any revision. Everything looks good though. Drinking my meds & water is already so much easier than recovering from my sleeve! I can tell a huge difference. I do have shoulder pain which they’ve told me is not gas but “positional pain” due to having my arms in one position for the entire 2.5 hour surgery. Thankfully, that means pain killers help. The hospital pushed fentanyl as much as they could once they figured out why I was pretty much screaming in pain. Then I had a morphine button I could push every 7 minutes. I walked a TON in the hospital. When they took me off of the pain meds, I ended up in severe pain again, and they had to give me another dose to make it home. Couldn’t sleep last night but got new pain meds this morning which really help. Would I do it again? Yes. Complications happen. The soreness will decrease. The healing will happen. More weight will come off. It’s going to all be ok. I’m just glad I finally got someone to listen to me.

    FEBRUARY 2020 Surgery dates🌹❤️

Any surgery makes me a little nervous. I think this one is making me nervous because it's a second revision and I think it's a lot more complicated than the others.
