not all surgeons require a liquid diet. Some just want you to fast the day before the surgery.

How much weight lost, on average, per week?
KayBee1972 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had the sleeve done on 2/4. Lost weight for 3 weeks, stalled for 5 and now just recently started losing weight again. The problem I have is that it seems slower than before. Since March 27th I have maybe lost 5 or 6 lbs. I have 2 different scales, one is a body composition scale that I picked up to see if I could get some kind of baseline on my stats. Anyway 5 lbs in 10 days doesn't seem like much compared to how fast it went in the first 3 weeks. Just wondering if that is normal expected weight loss now? By my calculations I should be burning about a net of 2000 calories per day, which seems like I should be losing more weight than I am. Maybe I'm just impatient because I lost so much perceived ground during the ridiculously long stall. -
Hungry hungry hungry

Raisin bread is simple carbs. Not a great choice. I wish it were, I love it, but it's gone from my diet because it's essentially a donut...white bread with raisins in it...super processed white flour, dried fruit is concentrated sugar, and almost no fiber to slow the sugar bomb down. Sugar bombs cause insulin rebound that makes you even hungrier...and you're more likely to snack. Be careful of too much fruit in smoothies, too. Lots of sugar and calories. Not saying not to eat fruit, just be very mindful of your sugar items and balance them with FIBER...it'll help. Track every calorie. When we pay attention to every single thing we graze on...it adds up crazy fast. -
Does age or menopause make a difference with how much weight is lost.

Thank you and congratulations on how well you’ve done. I’m just so worried that somehow this will fail like all the other diets. And although I’d prefer fast weight lost, I’ll take slow if it means I’ll get to my goal. -
Hello all, I just needed to complain to someone! I'm calling bull on the whole "get adequate liquid" thing. I want to get adequate liquid! I crave a nice large ice-cold cup of water. 64 oz pre-surgery? EASY. A dream. Now? Pureed stage, 3 small meals a day. Plus 2 protein shakes. Wait half an hour before eating or drinking, half an hour to complete your meal, and then wait half an hour afterward. Let's do the math. 5 x 1.5 = 7.5. I'm supposed to dedicate 7.5 hours a day to consuming food/protein but still get 64 oz-in. It breaks my heart. Hands down the most difficult thing about this experience. I miss being able to consume water like normal. Sometimes I worry I'm stretching my stomach out too fast by taking bigger sips, but the little ones get me nowhere. Life's a real trip sometimes bebes.

One week post-op: How fast should I be eating/drinking?
NovaLuna replied to PuraVida37's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 14 months out and my surgery involves a sleeved stomach. I never really had to worry about eating too fast because I have EoE which is an autoimmune disorder that causes narrowing of the esophagus and choking issues. So I've been a suuuuuuper slow eater since 2015 when I first started choking on almost everything I put into my mouth. I had to learn to chew my food to absolute mush or choke and end up in the hospital with them trying to give me medicine to relax my throat so that the food could go down naturally. By the time I had my surgery last year I was already used to taking an hour to two hours to eat a meal. Nothing really changed for me in that respect except that because I eat less sometimes it only takes me 45 minutes to eat. I just take a bite and chew it slowly and then wait about 30 seconds before taking another bite. Then I take another 30 seconds or more to chew so that it's around a minute in total between swallowing each bite so I'll know when I'm full before eating too much and feeling like I'm going to vomit (not gonna lie, I HAVE eaten a bit too fast a few times and it's not pleasant. I get nauseous for a good hour or two and feel uncomfortably full for around two hours. Considering I can count the number of times I've done this on both hands and still have fingers to spare... it's rare. Eight times in 14 months is really not too bad imo.) With protein you can either add in a pre-made 20 or 30g Protein shake (or clear protein) or two and then try to eat the rest in your diet. Or, you can buy protein powder and add it to your food or drinks. Fluid itself is a hard one. I get around 55-65 oz of fluid a day but early on it was a struggle for me to even get in the bare minimum my surgeon wanted of 48oz (half the time I was lucky if I could get in 32oz). The beginning is always the hardest. Trying to get into a routine that works for you, and getting used to a new way of eating. It's a lot to adjust to at once. Just do your best to meet your goals and if you don't then just try harder the next day. Eventually, you'll find a way to get there! (it worked for me, anyway) -
One week post-op: How fast should I be eating/drinking?

Whew - That's a loaded question really. The first couple of weeks can be pretty rough to get in everything you're "supposed" to get in. Everyone is so different in what they tolerate with regards to eating and/or drinking. Personally, I've never been sick from drinking too fast (just felt really full). Mostly just listen to your body. Get your fluids in, even if it's an ounce or two an hour. It DOES get easier. In about two weeks I was able to drink normally (I couldn't down a 16oz bottle of water in 10 minutes, but I could fairly easily do it in 30). DON'T compare yourself to others. If you need to do an oz at a time, just do that. BUT, if you're only doing very small amounts at a time, make sure you always have something in your hand to keep hydrated. Protein water is a good option at this stage - Also, changing the temp of your fluids make make it easier or harder - Try something room temp, warm, and cold to see what your body tolerates better. I was sleeved in August 2020 - I can more or less now eat at a normal pace (just small amounts) - DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT try to eat fast - You WILL regret it - trust me on that one... It's a mistake you'll only make once or twice (and again, trust me... you WILL make it...). Bottom line, listen to your body, especially at first until you know what does and doesn't work for you. We're all different and tolerate things differently. -
Is this normal ?
chiquitatummy replied to CrystalleB's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a few random pains and spasms during the first couple of weeks after surgery. They didn't stick around and it wasn't constant or accompanied by vomiting/uncontrolled nausea. There are a lot of potential reasons for discomfort in those first couple weeks that are (typically) not serious: incision healing, stomach acid, gas, constipation, a stitch getting tugged, tummy inflammation, drinking too fast...and probably more that I'm not think of. All that said...If you are worried contact your program. I called my program nurse twice in the first couple weeks to get reassurance that my discomfort wasn't an indication of something serious and it was great to get reassurance from a professional. Hang in there! It gets a lot easier after the first couple weeks. -
One week post-op: How fast should I be eating/drinking?

I'm supposed to hit my protein goals of 60-80 gm and liquids goal of 64 oz. It feels like an impossible feat at this point. How fast should newbies eat/drink? (Obviously not making it uncomfortable.) And how fast can people a year out eat? What do you do to pace yourself? Thanks in advance for answering. -
I just had my surgery this past Monday, 3/29. Mine was in the afternoon so I didn't really wake up fully from anesthesia til sometime in the middle of the night, but got right up and walked around the floor. I was so thirsty and had the driest mouth, but fortunately I had no problem at all with water. I went home the next day after drinking my protein shake without issue. I have had some soreness on my right side but if I stay on top of Tylenol and advil, I've been comfortable for the most part. I'm still tolerating fluids and shakes ok, but find sometimes I drink too fast and will get a spasm. I do have an rx for spasms, but I think I really just need to slow down. I'm drinking 2 protein shakes a day and getting my fluids in. I feel mostly fine, but I am still a little tired and have to remember I'm still healing and to take it easy. I am very encouraged having lost 19 lbs between my preop diet and my surgery.

Any March Surgeries?
GFitz replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my sleeve done this past Monday the 29th. Tolerated water and shakes very well. Mostly felt tired. Tylenol and Advil for the most part are managing the discomfort, but I have to remind myself to take it easy. I'm doing well on the liquid diet, but find sometimes I'm drinking too fast and it causes discomfort, but all and all I feel things are going well. With my 2 week preop diet and 5 days post surgery I am down 19 pounds and very pleased! -
February 2021 bypassers?
Orig Ironman replied to TreeTrunks's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Where did everyone go? I hope everyone is doing well. I'm 8 weeks out at this point down 30lbs. I had a few stalls but just checked my diet and got back on track with protein and water intake and a few more walks. I got Covid as well and was not feeling well for a week thankfully it was pretty mild. I went for a couple of 1 mile runs for the first time since surgery this week as well. Feeling good and looking good. I'm still craving bad foods especially at night. I tried to fast from 8pm -8 am and that lasted a day to try to keep from snacking. So I'm just trying to have better snacks than my go to chips. Greek Yogurt or apple and peanut butter or the jello sugar free pudding cups. But definitely craving salt and crunch. -
Going to Red Lobster at 4 weeks post op
Nanagrrl3 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Is it a good idea to go to red lobster and get their maple chicken and potatoes at 4 weeks post op? I know I’m not going to be able to eat much, I had a slice of low fat turkey earlier and it made me feel bloated.I think it’s because I eat to fast. -
I'm 16 months post op from a lower body lift and breast augmentation. I had several consultations and chose the surgeon that would do it all in one surgery (not the only reason I chose my surgeon, but one of them). My surgery was only 3.5 hours long. My surgeon seems to work unusually fast, which is at least in part due to his male PA, who assists in surgery. I have scars, but are quite faded by now. In general fair skin scars better than darker complexions. It was painful, but manageable, I took opioids for only a few days. (If opioids make you nauseous, try a scopolamine patch. I have the same issue and it works wonders) I have actually had a 2nd round of plastic surgery since then. Both times I didn't need a significant amount of help. I have no regrets about plastic surgery. It has given m a body I had never dreamed was possible. There is a plastic surgery forum on here. You can read about a lot of people's journeys.

Weight Loss Medication for Regain?
GreenTealael replied to Queen of Crop's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
If you have the chance check out the research on fasting times and efficacy. 12 hrs may not be enough. I used to do 16 hrs min and the results were A LOT slower at that point than at 20 hrs of fasting (OMAD) Good Luck with your appointment, I hope that it provides some help ❤️ -
I think everyone has regret the first week after surgery, it sucks in the beginning. It gets better fast. I wish I had done it sooner, best decision I ever made. It is not easy, it is a tool, its a journey, its hard ass work. In my situation, in my head, in my life it was and is worth it, you need to determine whats right for you

Weight Loss Medication for Regain?

If you haven’t tried Intermittent Fasting, I highly recommend trying that first. You may see a reduction of weight and hunger immediately and it doesn’t cost a thing or require a prescription ❤️ -
How long did you have to wait for your initial consult?
shelbyk3 replied to DoodlesMom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just started this journey and on 3/31 was my first appointment with the nurses and the next day on 4-1 I met with my surgeon and we set a date for my endoscopy procedure on 4-13 so mine is moving fast after that I’ll get my surgery date so I think every office is different depending on how many people they see. -
I could drink liquid normally after surgery. I understand many have to sip but I did not. Quantity changed that I could drink at a time and yes you will know if you are drinking too much at once. I feel sick for few minutes until it passes. You will learn fast.

I just booked with Blossom Bariatrics in Las Vegas. I fly in on 4/30, have my pre op appointments and surgery on 5/4. It’s the Fast Track self pay. I am getting the Safe Sleeve procedure. Changes in food preference after surgery?
BigSue replied to erica1030's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I initially didn’t think my tastes had changed at all, and I was disappointed. Food still tastes the same as it did before surgery. The only exception is that I used to be a wimp when it came to spicy food, and now I crave spicy food — I use a ton of hot sauce and crushed red pepper. I don’t think I taste spiciness as strongly anymore. I also like a lot of onions and garlic in my food now (I’ve always liked garlic, but didn’t used to be a huge fan of onions). But I’ve started noticing that the foods I want to eat are different than they used to be. I’m not sure if it’s a change in taste, or if I’m just getting used to eating healthier foods, or if it’s just because I’ve discovered a lot of good, healthy recipes since my surgery, or what, but I definitely have more of a desire to eat vegetables now. I love roasting vegetables in my air fryer, just sprayed with some olive oil or avocado oil and sprinkled with seasonings. I used to hate cauliflower, but now I eat it all the time. I wonder what the Walmart grocery pickup people thought about the lady who bought 3 bags of frozen cauliflower, 1 bag of fresh cauliflower florets, and 3 bags of frozen cauliflower rice in one order. Cauliflower rice is one of my favorite “food hacks.” I don’t miss regular rice at all because cauliflower rice is a perfect substitution. I found a recipe for cauliflower cream sauce and it was delicious; I used it in a chicken divan recipe, and it was so good that I’m looking for other recipes where I can substitute the cauliflower sauce for white sauce. I also like Buffalo cauliflower now. I’ve always hated fish, but I decided to give it another try. I made some mahi-mahi and actually liked it! I couldn’t believe it. Again, I’m not sure if it’s because my tastes changed or because I have more of an open mind about eating fish. (I will say that I also tried one of those flavored tuna pouches and still did not care for it.) I spend a lot of time on Pinterest looking at healthy recipes. I have a whole board full of healthy recipes that I can’t wait to try. Since I have all these healthy foods that I actually want to eat, I have less of a desire to eat junk food. I do eat some healthy-ish treats, like a daily protein bar (I’m obsessed with Built Bars), sugar-free meringue cookies, sugar-free Jello, and protein mug cakes, but I don’t really have a desire to go and eat fast food or a bag of chips or anything... except when I see other people eating that stuff, and then it’s tough because it makes me remember how much I used to love it. -
Food Before and After Photos

You’re right about maple syrup 🔥 It’s so good... when it’s homemade, the store bought version is essentially a very large cracker. It’s the equivalent to store bought vs bakery fresh Its similar to roti but without any leavening agents so it needs to be cooked right (made thin and fast: hot griddle, crepe maker, tandoori oven 😂) -
You know.... I felt the same way. Then my dietician advanced me to purees. Goodness, I was so excited. But eating is more like a chore now and is no longer pleasurable. I have to eat super slowly and carefully to make sure I don't eat too fast or take too big of bites. I'm not trying to scare you, I just want you to be aware that there are struggles on the next stages, too. Good luck!

Thank you for writing this. I had Sleeve surgery October 2019 and I used a beloved parents inheritance to finance it and I STILL fail myself. I wrongly assumed that because I had a tiny stomach that still restricts me to a. Very small volume of solids, my early success and fast weight loss would be maintained with no effort. I was wrong, no matter how much guilt I feel, I still eat food like Mac n cheese and drink G&Ts I have the incentive of my daughter’s wedding in 4 months but I bought a piece of Turkish delight covered in chocolate last night-I’m ashamed of myself.....maybe hypnotism?
