    Feb sleeves unite!

I had my gastric bypass surgery on 2/20/23. How is everyone hanging in there?
  3. If your blood tests have been fine, and you have had no history of serious nor long term nutritional deficiencies, then they don't have a clue what is causing it so they are blaming your bypass. I would get a second opinion.

    Muscular Weakness after Bypass?

Thanks for your replies. It is definitely baffling and very frustrating. I am limited to the amount of exercise I can do. 5/6 years ago I could run 5k- I now walk maybe 2k most days. Muscle stiffness stops me doing much. I walk the dogs most days and my main hobby is vegetable gardening which keeps me active. I used to do some weight training but have been advised to avoid this by the neurologist. My own research into muscle weakness /myopathy etc tells me that most of the more common forms of it are irreversible and there is no real treatment available. What bothers me though is that if the neurologist is correct and it is a consequence of the bypass - the it could be possible to reverse the situation. Thanks again for your replies.

    Not sure about the sleeve

While the surgery will help with some things, it’s real success depends upon choices you make. Regardless of which surgery you have you will lose your appetite/hunger for a period of time (there are a few people who don’t & it’s with either surgery). You will also temporarily lose your taste for certain foods. It’s often sugar, as foods can become super sweet but it can be any food that smells &/or tastes awful. Neither surgery will do anything about your desire for sweet & your emotional eating. These are things you have to work through yourself. As we often say the surgery only removes some of your tummy/changes your digestive system. It doesn’t remove the part of your brain that drives your head hunger. It’s why many chose to seek therapy to learn the reasons behind their head hunger & develop strategies to help them better manage their emotional eating, cravings, etc. Both surgeries will reset your body’s set point. This is the weight your body is happiest at & is easiest to maintain. What your set point becomes can’t be predicted. Can you lose more than your set point? Yes, but it is harder to do & maintain. Can you weigh more than your set point? Yes because lifestyle demands or choice, medical conditions & medications, etc. can mean we carry more weight. Remember the average weight loss statistic at the three year mark for both surgeries is about 65% of the weight to be lost to put the person in a healthy weight range. Some will lose more & others less. I have a sleeve. I felt it would suit my life better & was less drastic than bypass. I made a number of choices to benefit my success that I knew I could sustainably follow for the long term & not feel like I was missing out. I took advantage of the too sweet phase & decided not to introduce sweet back into my diet - or avoid as much as I could - & so rarely eat real or artificially sweet foods or drinks. I chose to rarely eat take away or fast foods. I prep & cook most of what I eat from scratch & rarely eat medium or high processed foods or ingredients. I also chose not to include a lot of exercise in my life - I simply don’t enjoy it. But these are my choices. You’ll make choices that best complement you & your lifestyle. I also lost all my weight & more & have maintained. All the best with whichever surgery you chose to have.

    Not sure about the sleeve

in response to what someone said above, most people lose their hunger for several months with bypass, too. I'm currently taking a graduate-level nutrition course on weight loss and obesity, and ghrelin level was extremely low on RNY patients at one year out in a fairly large research study. both sleeve and RNY are good surgeries, and both have their pros and cons. There are some conditions that make one surgery more appropriate for you than the other, but if you don't have those conditions (which from what you said, it doesn't sound like you do), it really comes down to personal preference. lots of people who've had WLS - both RNY and sleeve folks - take antidepressants. Shouldn't be a problem. With some medications they need to adjust your dosage or put you on a different med, but there are workarounds for almost everything.

    Not sure about the sleeve

Regardless of which procedure you decide on, this is a lifestyle change. If you don't already have one I suggest talking to a mental health professional before scheduling your big day. I was leaning towards a bypass, but my doctors shared with me that the bypass comes with a lot more risk, and that for the types of medications I take, a sleeve would be best. I am now 3 days post-op and while I used to have a severe sweet tooth, I can honestly say that it's been difficult to choke down some of these protein shakes because they're simply TOO sweet. This is a big change, and I hope that you can find a comfortable place emotionally/mentally to pick a date. Good luck!
  8. Just approved, no date yet but I am obsessing over sleeve vs bypass. My Dr wants me to have the sleeve and I agreed but I’m worried that it won’t be as effective as bypass and because I’m an emotional eater and addicted to sugar, I’m worried about gaining weight back. My husband had bypass 3 years ago and lost 120 and said it made him lose desire for certain foods like sugar. I need to lose 70 or 80, I’m 5’6 and 220 and my Dr thought I don’t need to lose that much so sleeve is best but I disagree on how much I should lose. I do have to take a baby aspirin for risk of stroke along with antidepressants so I know he is worried about ulcers but my husband takes a aspirin every once and awhile and is on Prozac and never had any problems. If anyone can put my mind at ease that the sleeve is best I’d appreciate it!
  9. Hi - I’m Phil. I’m 54 yrs old and had a gastric bypass in 2011. I weighed close to 400lbs at the start of the journey and am currently 174lbs to I deem the process as a success. I have in recent years though developed a chronic weakness in my muscles - mainly legs, shoulders etc (I also have a heartbeat issue). I walk with a waddle and struggle to get up from a sitting position and struggle with stairs etc. I have had many tests including MRI (x 2), nerve conduction tests, many different blood tests and finally this week, a muscle biopsy. My neurologist cannot diagnose the issue - the biopsy is the last attempt. We met recently and he has now said that he thinks that I have ‘idiopathic myopathy related to chronic nutritional deficiency secondary to gastric bypass.; I am concerned about this since none of my routine bloods have ever thrown up a deficiency - in the past few years I have had many different blood tests in addition to the usual monitoring and apart from a mild case af low iron which is sorted now, I have not had any levels that have been flagged up as abnormal. So - I’m not here for medical advice as such - I just wanted to ask the experienced members - have you heard of many people who have experienced muscular issues (eg atrophy /stiffness etc) ? My research so far has not found any examples - apart from a few cases but they were down to vomiting which I have never suffered from. What do we think - any opinions on this? Thanks in advance. Phil
  10. Wow you lost 60 lb!! That's truly a goal! Which surgery did you have did you have bypass or sleeve? I had sleeve. I know about the hair fall out I ended up getting my haircut short very short and that seemed to help
  11. You made such a good point here… thank you! I’m wishing you all the r best with your upcoming bypass! I hope you’ll post your process so I can cheer you on 🙌😊
  12. Okkkkkk so UPDATE yall!!! I can't recall if I told yall that I had the UGI done and it came back normal supposedly right.... so how about today i had my endoscopy done.. come to find out what they found so far is that my sleeve had twisted! She said it could be from the way it healed. But I read that it could also be from the way the staples were placed. Have anyone ever heard of this happening? I know prior to the surgery before they drugged me she said i will check it out and if anything I will do a dialation because she said my sleeve is really tiny.. whatever that mean. LOL I thought everyone sleeved their stomachs will be the same size so did she make mine smaller... weird. Nevertheless when i was in the recover room drugged i faintly heard her telling me stuff and i just recall nodding. So now I have to wait until my follow up visit to find out more details and if she was able to actually fix the twist. I do still have some of the symptoms as in the original post I made but they haven't been that bad in the last 5-6 hrs so we will see. I did read there there is several fixes for this issue with one of them being bypass which I was trying to avoid. Mainly because of not being able to take anti inflammatory meds, scared for another major surgery and me keep being out of work to recover. I feel like she may suggest this especially if i keep having heartburn and acid reflux 🫤. She also ordered for me to get another UGI before I follow up with her.. not sure why though since the 2nd one didn't even show her anything smh. Btw have anyone broke out from taking reglan? I took ot for 3 days and felt veey down, tired and weird just not myself and i immediately broke out on my face and chest prior to this I have had no breakouts whatsoever. This have all been an experience and I will try to remain positive for better days.... excuse typos as I'm still coming down from the medication they have me on.
  13. I'm so glad you posted this @mcipanda. I'm scheduled for gastric bypass on 3/29, and as it gets closer I try to visualize what is coming. Like you, I honestly can't wrap my head around nor visualize myself being significantly smaller. I'm also afraid of self sabotage and failing, you're not alone in that! I have struggled with weight since my teen years and am currently 46 years old. It's so hard to believe things could change for me and this is real! I keep reading posts on this forum and take comfort in knowing so many not only felt this same doubt, but they overcame it to reach their goals! Thanks again for sharing this, and I wish you well in your journey!

    October 2022 surgery support

Had gastric bypass 10/3. Down 77 pounds total. 19 of that was before surgery. Anyway, I am barely getting in 600 calories a day at this point and can only handle about an ounce and a half of protein with a couple bites of veggies at meals. I have a very clear full signal and don’t eat past it. I haven’t had sugar or carbs since surgery and I intend to stick with that. I cannot tolerate cheese, nuts, butter, basically anything but lean proteins and some vegetables. I even struggle with fruit. I don’t have a dietician so I have no idea if I am on track or not with my eating so I just take each day as it comes. I am happy with my weight loss. As most everyone I wish it was faster. But I have only stalled once and that was at the 3 week mark. I am exercising some but with the low amount of calories I am eating it is hard to have a lot of stamina. If anyone has any pointers let me know. I also still rely on 1-2 protein shakes a day to get protein up to around 80 grams.
  15. I put on lots after my bypass as I was on IV fluids for two days. My feet were very puffy. Leaving it for two weeks will give your body a chance to get rid of the extra fluid. Now might be a really good time to record your measurements. I do this on a monthly basis. Sometimes we lose pounds, At other times we lose inches.

    Gastric bypass people

Hi, my bypass was 1/23/23. I was nervous as well not knowing what is going on with my insides healing. Very scared at times navigating drinking clear fluids and protein shakes. I couldn't gage how long the liquid took to get through the swollen areas of the surgery. I wished I had superpowers of xray vision ha! I have had surgeries before that I'd gage my healing on visible scars and inflammation. This was new and different. I want to validate your feelings of fears as I too had these anxious moments. You'll start to get better learning your new organs function as with everything new it's going to take time. I'm starting my new phase of soft foods(from pureed) and will have to figure out again how my healing is going. (Secretly hoping for those xray vision superpowers, ha!) Cheryl

    Skeptical spouse

I just had gastric bypass on 2/14 and have had weight problems all my life just like you. I was extremely self conscious for a long time about mentioning that I was considering wls to anyone for a long time because I was afraid of the judgment and stigma that surround it. Having support is invaluable. I would particularly point out your comorbitidies and how this surgery could help them. There are many patients that have completely stopped having to take any medications for diabetes and even put it into remission. Also if you look into the history of the gastric bypass it was originally a procedure that was used to assist people with gerd and gastric reflux to get rid of these issues and it just happened to have the side effect of weight loss. The more informed and logical on your approach would be the route I would go in getting her on board. Good luck! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. What did you feel like the night you had surgery to 2 days post op? Anybody feel discomfort? Does it feel like you're swallowing air when you drink anything or eat yogurt/jello? I'm feeling this. I'm going to tell my surgeon in the morning when he checks in. I hope it's a normal feeling. It definitely feels restricted. Hopefully all I'm feeling is gas...gas that won't come, just tiny burps. I'm scared to eat jello and yogurt, I only took a few bites. I was so scared.

I don't want to tell anyone at work

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but all it takes to find out the surgical procedure is a basic Google search. Just type "CPT" (Current Procedural Terminology) and the procedure number; example: CPT 43773 is "Laparoscopy, surgical, gastric restrictive procedure". The CPT # will most likely have a modifier added to differentiate the various restrictive procedures (Band, VSG, ESG, Duo-Switchn etc.) HR should not have access to HIPAA protected medical records submitted to the company's insurance provider or division. The Healthcare provider/Surgeon and facility should be filing the insurance claim directly which would bypass the HR Dept.

How long were you off work?

I had RnY gastric bypass. I took 3 weeks off. However, I wish I could have taken more time off. I'm one of the rare patients that had a prolonged period of pain, afterward. The pain wasn't horrible - liquid Tylenol took care of it - but it did make it quite uncomfortable for me to sit upright for long periods of time.
  21. I am 4 months and a few days post op, RnY gastric bypass. My restriction experience has been as expected. Until a few days ago... A week ago, I was able to eat about 3-4 ounces of food in one meal. I've been able to eat that for probably about a month. Totally textbook. All of a sudden, I am full after about 2 ounces. I started forcing myself to finish my food and it has been messing with my head. I know that overeating is a very bad idea, so I've decided to stop doing that. I've only been doing it for about 4 days, so I don't think I've caused myself any long-term damage. But, I'm kinda weirded out about the fact that I'm suddenly having the restriction that I did earlier on. Has anyone else experienced this?

    duodenal switch

I'm 8 yrs post op on a gastric bypass and have now started regaining weight. I'm considering the bypass revision or what appears to be another name duodenal switch. Curious if anyone has done this and what are their results...Also this would be a self-paid surgery and I was looking for an estimated cost.
  23. I am scheduled for a March 20tj bypass - it’s getting real and the questions are hitting me fast and furious. Appreciate any advice and insight: 1. Dying my hair/roots - any issues. Should I do it now or closer to the surgery date so it lasts longer. Same question for a new cut. Time for people to get use to it? Should I start taking collagen, non-sulphur shampoo - anything to manage the hair loss a little Walking post surgery - should I get walking sticks? I know there is no weight lifting post surgery - what about other non-weight bearing exercised- exercise bike, yoga classes etc. COVID, flu, tetanus, - anything else I should get ahead of Any kitchen things I should get- can you purée with a hand blender?
  24. Congratulations! I am currently in the waiting room for my bypass, so nervous, and hoping nothing goes wrong!
  25. Surgery went great. It's a little bit sore where they did bypass. And a little gas I feel. I walked twice so far. I know I should have been walking more
