Thank you for your kindness! I didn't have much GERD, but they did do a hiatal hernia repair that I didn't know I had. My dietician said it can take a few weeks to see weight loss, but it's frustrating when I lost 15 lb before surgery and nothing now with barely eating. That's a good suggestion.

What has your experience been with having the sleeve to bypass revision? How was the recovery? Do you have many more food aversions? More dumping? More severe hair loss? I'm considering the revision due to GERD and I want to hear all the stories before I commit.

healing process and the swimming pool?
YaniB posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I am considering Wt loss surgery. I am curious about the healing time, I want to have an idea when I can get back in the swimming pool and for how long, I spend lots of time inside the swimming pool (water aerobics and swimming) -
Thanks for posting this. I really needed to see this post and I'm sure a lot of us who are just starting their weight loss journey will feel the same. You look great and I'm sure you feel great too.

Absolutely! Amazon has a few with good reviews. I made sure to search for surgical compression garments. They are a lil pricey but it seems worth it. Several bariatric patients told me in person that I need to wear a girdle of some sort to help with the excess skin amount and weight loss . Told me it will help out a lot for contouring without having to get a lot of surgery.

Sleeve to Bypass revision (didn’t lose enough w/ sleeve)
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to XoxoLadyA's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had to have a revision for other reasons, but I can tell you that you lose a lot less with it than the initial surgery. I'm 5 weeks post op, and I've lost 16 pounds. This time last year, I had lost 30. So you lose roughly half as much with a revision as you do from the initial surgery. Revisions tend to be worth it more if you have complications from the initial surgery (like I did). Additional weight loss isn't really a huge reason since you lose slower and less than the original surgery. -
The good news is that for many people, hair does grow back to its pre-op glory over time! It's different for everyone, but typically, this hair loss phase lasts for a few months. So hang in there, and you'll likely start seeing improvements soon! As for something other than Biotin to help you out, there are definitely options to consider. You might want to look into hair supplements with essential vitamins and minerals like zinc, iron, and Vitamin D, which can play a role in supporting healthy hair growth. On a separate note, if you've been using a lot of protein-based hair products, it's essential to check for protein overload, which can sometimes contribute to hair issues. If that's the case, finding ways on how to fix protein overload might help improve the overall health of your hair.

August 2023 Surgery Buddies!
Hapamomma replied to kayhay0714's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I should have mentioned in my initial post that I had a sleeve in 2018. Had horrible GERD since and also never lost the most weight that my surgeon said I could possibly lose. Fast forward through COVID, loss of a family member, major job change l, etc etc - I actually gained almost ALL of the weight back. It very embarrassing. I would have never thought that I would gain it all back - ever. As the day goes, never say never. I have a new surgeon now and she is amazing and did not make me feel like a loser. Since I have GERD and never lost to my potential, and have the hiatal hernia, I am having a revision to gastric bypass on 8/11. My highest weight was 250 and my lowest weight after sleeve was 169. I’m 5’4”. To say that this second chance means everything to me is an understatement. I haven’t even told anyone (besides my husband) that I’m doing the revision because I’m so embarrassed. -

That's great losses, both of you. Congrats! It's easy to get caught up with the end goal and the number on the scale scale, but there is so much to celebrate on the way. I'm down 60 lbs since the start of the pre-op diet (45lbs since surgery). I haven't made it to "onederland" yet, but I'm close. However, my clothing sizes have changed a bunch. I started in a tight US 18 and can now fit in a US 14 or US 12, depending on the brand. My overall health has been improving. Mostly less pain, more energy, and improving stamina. I'm still dealing with sleep apnea, unfortunately, but I have hope that'll get better down the road.

Eating too much 6 days post op RNY
lolyschmoney replied to lolyschmoney's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thank you, everyone, for your messages. I revisited the post-op diet sheets provided by my dietitian and discovered that I'm actually supposed to eat even more than I currently am at this stage! Rather than focusing on calorie counting, the primary goal is to prevent deficiencies, and they are confident that long-term weight loss will naturally occur. Yesterday, I made a mistake by eating too quickly and consuming too much food (including 4 oz yogurt, 2 small toasts (see attached pic), 1 egg, and 3 oz pureed salmon and broccoli). As a result, I experienced terrible abdominal cramps before bedtime. Today, I'm going back to a diet of liquids and yogurts only. Your mention of "staples rupture" did give me a little scare, but I appreciate the information. Regarding water intake, I can manage to drink water, but swallowing is painful and creates uncomfortable air bubbles inside. So, I reckon I'm drinking around 500ml to 1 liter a day. Thank you all for your support and understanding during this post-op phase. Your encouragement means a lot to me as I work towards a smooth recovery. -
Eating too much 6 days post op RNY

I echo the advice to go back to your surgeon for guidance & if you haven’t got one, find a dietician/nutritionalist with experience supporting wls patients. There are differences in plans, your very quick cycle through the return to eating stages as an example. But we ourselves are very different & consequently have different needs. For example I’m shorter, probably older, likely had a different weight loss/gain history, had no comorbidities before surgery & aren’t very active. I wasn’t given calorie goals only portion size: 1/4 - 1/3 cup from purée slowly increasing to about a cup at goal which was 6 months. I remember for months it would take me three days to eat two scrambled eggs. I could eat one egg at 6 months - just the egg nothing else I didn’t have to track calories but I know I was barely consuming 300 in around the soft food stage & was barely eating 900 calories at 6 months. My plan did not allow for any rice, pasta or bread at any stage while losing. Beat advice is to go slowly & be more tentative with your food choices while you are healing (& it does take a few weeks). The staged return to eating we work through is to protect & not strain your healing tummy & support your recovery. Remember all those staples & sutures holding your tummy & digestive system together & all the nerves that have been cut too. All the best with your recovery & weight loss. -
Fantastic to see such a big loss so soon. Congratulations! And your surgeon was only 6lbs out (am I right?) so - also nice that you were prepared!

Did I eat too much?
PennyinAL replied to pamelacoa@yahoo.com's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi summerseeker, isnt restriction what we’re aiming for? My Dr basically said (and I heard this from a 2nd one I considered as well) that you want the most restricted from the outset and the goal is to lose as much weight as you possibly can in the first 6-12 mos bc weight loss wanes or stops after that. And I did lookup some dieticians in Huntsville that I am planning to try to go see if I can get an appointment Ty -

How did you select your goal weight?
hills&valleys replied to Sigh's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Most of my adult life I maintained my weight at 117 pounds with exception of two periods lasting a couple of years that I packed on extra weight. With dedication and vigilance, I was always able to lose the excess.....until "The Great Weight Gain of 2012". None of my previous successful weight loss tactics were working and when I hit the 10 year mark of struggling to lose the extra weight; as well as, growing health issues from the added weight, I accepted the fact that i now was unable to fight this battle alone. I chose my goal weight of 112 in anticipation of the common regain from the lowest weight acheived to allow myself a five pound alarm system....in hopes of never seeing the scales above 117 again. -

@PennyinAL I highly suggest you hire a nutritionist that specializes in bariatric care. You can find someone who will do telehealth appointments and you can see if you can find someone who takes your insurance! At least a few sessions to get a much better diet plan structured. 500 calories seems too low once you are out of the liquid phase. The surgery (in my understanding) resets your metabolism so you don't want to crash it with going too low on your calories. What used to apply for you for weight loss pre surgery may not apply post surgery because of the change in hormones. You really want professional guidance on this, everyone here varies in their macros because there is no standardization in the field at the moment. -
Low Vitamin D, High PTH, & Bone Loss after BPD/DS
B Mack posted a topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I had BPD/DS surgery in 2016, leaving 1.5 meters of common channel. Following this surgery, my Vitamin D levels plummeted to deficient levels. This had a cascade effect, where my hyperparathyroid (PTH) levels rose to dangerous levels, and although my calcium levels were ok, my body could not metabolize it due to low Vitamin D. So my body began to pull calcium from my bones. I now have full osteoporosis as a 55 year-old male, and break ribs and toes regularly in addition to pain. Through the years, my physician continued to increase my oral Vitamin D dosage, eventually reaching 50,000 IU per day, but it made little difference in any lab tests. I am just not absorbing it. I found and read clinical studies on the effectiveness of Vitamin D3 intramuscular injections, and decided to try it. Unfortunately this is not available in the US. It is done in Scandinavian countries, Australia, Canada, India, South Korea, Brazil and many other countries. I had to jump through some hoops, but was able to get 30 doses of 600,000 IU Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3). I only need 1 injection per 6 months. My numbers have all returned to normal. My doctor thinks he is responsible for fixing me, but I know different. I can't reverse the bone loss that has already occurred, but I can keep it from getting worse. Take your health into your own hands when you aren't getting the right answers from your doctor. If you are having similar lab results, do some about it before the bone damage gets bad. If you have questions or are interested in any information, message me. I encourage you to research this yourself to your own satisfaction, but I can point you to some resources. It is working for me where no amount of oral supplementation would.
