New Lapband revision with Gastric Bypass
OmaJ posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi all, I had my Lapband revision with Gastric Bypass on 9/5/17. Thankful I only had to spend one night in the hospital. Walking good since the day of surgery, and have slowly worked up to walking outside around our block twice a day! [emoji5] I was in a car accident 4 years ago, multiple health issues since, and last 2 years consistently gained wt. I was miserable prior to surgery, felt like you could pop my abdomen with a pin (looked like 9 months pregnant). I am diabetic, was on Trulicity weekly injection several months prior to surgery, which is the main reason for having the surgery - hopefully help reverse diabetes, get healthy and feel better physically. I'm a disabled nurse now (pediatric/NICU). I know this will/is a journey with ups & downs, and is a "tool" - I have to do my part, but thankful surgery went smoothly and I'm on my way to better health! God bless each of you on your journey! I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass. At around 6 or 7 months, I stopped losing weight. It was very natural. I just slid into the Maintenance phase. Here is my perception of the Maintenance phase. The goals and approach in the Maintenance phase is different than in the Weight Loss phase. It takes a different strategy. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

Most of time time the first two weeks following bypass is: Week 1 - Clear liquids only SF Jello, broth, Water, crystal lite, watered down apple juice, SF Popsicles Week 2 - full liquids and clear liquids- same as above plus creamed Soups, yogurt, Protein shakes (no more watered down Apple juice) Week 3 - the will move you to puréed if all goes well. You should ask your surgeon for his/her food plan because they all seem to differ but they should give you some idea of exactly what to eat when. In terms of meds, you should try to get yourself the liquid versions for the first 3 months or chewable if you can. Otherwise you will be crushing anything that is bigger around than a pencil eraser. This improves over time but those first 3 months it is pretty swollen in there. I don't use a blender because I buy Premier Protein ready made shakes instead of all the powders. When I had the puréed stage I used either my food processor or I had a nutrition bullet. I have since given that nutri bullet away. The best of luck to you! I hope all goes well.

I've bought two. One is silver and really nice, the other one is attached to a sports band. On the front they only have my information and emergency contact and then on the back is the info about gastric bypass. No be has asked me about mine. If they do I will probably just tell them I have some medical allergic reactions. It makes me feel safer wearing it in case something were to happen.

Hey y'all! Have anybody submitted a pre determination form to bypass the 3 to 6 months Nutrition visits to the insurance company? If so please explain the process. Thanks!

Reversals are actually done a lot more often than you would think. I may be doing this by the end of the year. There are Facebook groups for gastric bypass takedowns and support. Lots of people have had mechanical issues and needed reversals. They are definitely high risk, however if they can take you apart, they can put you back together, although I wouldn't go to just anyone that's for sure!. I'm personally experiencing malnutrition, and severe weight loss (and no, none of this is my doing. I did all that I was supposed to over the last 16 years). Had a revision in September, and still having complications. Seeing my doctor again next week to discuss next step, which is most likely the takedown. They also do them on those who continue to get ulcers, or severe dumping (which I also get from everything I eat). In regard to weight gain from the reversal, it's one's choice to eat badly and put the weight back on, just like you can start making bad choices with rny and never expect to stretch your stomach. It happens in most cases. I learned a lot about eating well, healthy/organic, locally grown as often as possible. (wish I knew then what I know now, I regret my surgery a lot) I would actually give anything to eat a salad or a piece of fish right now, instead I am getting tpn through a picc line. So even though you follow the plan, like I did it doesn't mean you wont have issues.

@@augkash - are you getting revised?

I am going to see this doctor in a week.He is in Cheery Hill NJ.Anyone know of him?I know he is known for lap bands but I want a sleeve revision.

Not sure any more.
1Day1Life4Now replied to almitch's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
almitch, this scenario does not make sense to me. The bypass is generally for persons with more severe comorbidities. If you want the sleeve, ask for the sleeve and if this doctor doesn't want to do it, change doctors. I didn't go with the bypass because I didn't want to fool with all of those malaborption issues for the rest of my life. The sleeve is the way to go. You're paying the doctor, he works for you so you make the decision on which you get. Good luck to you and stand up for yourself. -

I ask my doctor about the DS. And he won't even discuss it with me he says I don't weigh enough to have that one. So I am getting the mini gastric bypass. As I was already sleeve 3 years ago lost 60 lbs but gained back 30. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using BariatricPal mobile app -

Is the band just temporary?
nkara replied to BellaNena's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The band is supposed to be a permanent fix. You should not think that it is temporary. The only times the band needs to be removed is if it errodes, slips, etc. I believe some of the people who had to have revision surgery was due to complications. I know for me if anything happens with my band I will have no second thoughts about getting a revision and keeping it. I love my band and I'm so glad I have it. -
When I had the revision done the Doctor made my opening wider so that my intake would be more. So now that my intake is more I am gaining wt. so that is why Im wondering if anyone has had this done. I have heard that it is possible.

Hello, I had GBP surgery in 1998 & ended up having a revision due to a blockage. I am now thinking of having the lap band but want to know is there any one out there that has had this done, if so how are you doing & what Dr. did your surgery? Any info will help.

Inspiration. A Note from Hubby.
ItsTheNewMe posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi All... Got this text from my hubby today. So fun after so much hard work and years of failed diets and challenges...and I've just gotten started after WLS revision a month ago. Just thought I'd share to inspire all of us as we search to change and get healthy and to realize the positive effects on those around us. Let's go do all those things we couldn't do before and include family and friends in the journey. "I cannot tell you how excited I am right now about our journey and path forward. From our house and life at home to your health and our family's health. Being more active and moving our center of focus from eating to doing... It's great! It's an adjustment but a good one. It will open so much for us. We can do ski trips and hike and swim and snorkel and bike and ... On and on for fun getaways or around our neighborhood. Just think, you will be able to walk up the mountain with me in Aspen or where ever. Then at home, we are able to work on the house together... I love that. Before, it was daunting, but yesterday showed me how great it will be now. Tackling a closet or a room is nothing. We can organize and decorate together. It will make our house so extra warm (it already was, but now it will be even more so). THANK YOU for tackling this health monster. I'm so proud of you. I will do the same in my life. You're inspiring. Thank you. Love you." Question: What are you doing or going to do that may drive you and possibly inspire your loved ones? (Me-I've now joined a gym. Your turn...) -
Pre-surgery...I think i blew it... help?
JenryD posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have to complete 6 months weight management as part of the qualifications before surgery. Well I'm almost done with it, but now I've messed up. I went nuts one weekend and now I can't get back on track like before... I'm eating less than I did before weight management, but more than I am supposed to. Even if I straighten up right now... I think I've gained weight since my last weigh in. I'm worried my nutritionist won't approve the surgery because I slipped and its making me less honest in my tracking and more likely to slip more... last nut appt is Wednesday. What do I do? Do I come clean? Will my nut refuse to send the recommendation letter I need over this massive slip? Do I say I've been a little bad? I think I've gained back 3 pounds. Help. I need this surgery. Obviously I need the tool of bypass... what should I do? What will the nut say? -
Revision with bmi 33? Anyone had it?
Blater replied to jnewbie's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
You have to consider if the risk of a revision is worth it. Revisions are far more riskier due to the scar tissue formed by the band and adhesions from previous surgery. Also as a revision your at a higher risk for severe acid reflux. -

True, you can't avoid the GERD but it can be most likely resolved by a third revision to RNY. GL -
Surgeon for someone in central Ohio
ajwilliams33 replied to 1-4-Many's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I had my surgery done at the Cleveland Clinic by Dr Bipan Chand. He was fantastic and the program was pretty good too. The nursing staff/hospital stay was a little iffy but still okay. I felt great after the surgery and returned (by my request) to work only 2 weeks later. I am now 10 weeks post op (55 lbs lighter) and feel fantastic! Most of my generic testiing that is required (ie blood test, nutrition, etc..) I was allowed to complete at my local family doctor (I live about 2 hours from Cleveland). Someone listed Dr. Meyer as a recommended surgeon... as I'm sure all surgeon and hospitals have their own horror stories, I work with a lady who had her gastric bypass done by Dr. Meyer and was on her death bed for a long time. The surgery was botched and she continues to have issue years later. Her body is now the body of an annorexic (spelling?). I'm not sure of the complete details of what actually happened but she is still not "out of the woods". Use your judgment on that but I thought I'd let you know my knowledge of that particular surgeon. Again, Dr. Chand was wonderful! I had no problems with any part of the surgery and highly recommend him. Good luck in your decision. It was well worth it for me! -
Revision surgery: Why will this time be different?
KSW22 replied to KSW22's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I guess I will have to try something new now. I had my surgery Friday and they were unsuccessful doing the revision because of so much scar tissue from my perforated ulcer in 2012. He was able to repair my hiatal hernia but that’s all. Not sure how I’m feeling about it yet. I’m sure it will sink in sooner or later. Thanks for the reading references too. -
Revision surgery: Why will this time be different?
KSW22 replied to KSW22's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
LisaMarrie, I appreciate your reply. Have you had your revision surgery yet? I am taking all your words in and have been thinking about this all morning. I have had mental health therapy along with my eating disorder and have worked on a lot of this in the past. I just sometimes doubt myself. If I already know what to do, why do I ignore myself? I am super grateful I have a loving husband and a best friend that both support my decision. My family is on board too but it’s my own shame of having to do this again that is difficult. I guess that’s another subject I can touch on but after 17 years of living with bypass surgery, I almost have to starve myself to lose any weight at all. Is that ring true for you too? It’s so hard to lose weight now that my stomach is stretched and having to eat 800 to 900 calories to lose weight makes for a very cranky lady. I just want to feel like this time it’s forever. I feel ready and want these thoughts I’m having are normal and others might have felt the same way. Make sense? -

2018 Study: Weight loss surgery may affect an individual's risk of developing cancer
Born in Missouri posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Patients who underwent surgery had a 77% decreased risk of developing hormone-related cancer (breast, endometrial or prostate cancer) when compared with patients who did not have surgery. Gastric bypass resulted in the largest risk reduction (84%) for hormone-related cancer but was associated with a greater than twofold increased risk of colorectal cancer. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/07/180716103541.htm- 10 replies

I had originally wanted the sleeve when I met my surgeon. After doing some more research I changed my mind and elected bypass, My surgeons office needed to know for sure which surgery we were doing before submitting it to be certain the insurance would pay for it.
