  1. BrickHouse

    Albany, New York....?

Thanks so much for the support, kids! I'm definitely feeling better, but I'm VERY sore and bruised. I didn't bruise at all with my RNY. Not sure what touched it off. I had a few sips of diet Ocean Spray and I immediately felt a wave of nausea. I went upstairs and lay down for a little bit and within 30 minutes I had to go throw up. Then it was like clockwork. Nothing was coming up, but I couldn't stop. I couldn't keep anything at all down. The nasty stuff you have to drink for a CAT scan was the worst. I was able to hold it down for the scan, but when they wheeled me down for the ultrasound, the motion made me violently ill. That was the closest thing to puking my guts up that I've ever experienced. I know it came from below my pouch because more than a pouch full came up. Sorry if TMI. I was SO ready to go to the ER when they came to get me at 9 am Friday.I usually have nothing but good to say about St. Peter's, but this time was different. They had trouble with my IV so they put it in the crook of my elbow, rendering my arm useless. Four more failed attempts in my wrist left me with a nasty bruise. Then while I was in the OR, they started a new one in the top of my hand, but they left the other one in! It kept poking my bicep and I almost took it out myself. Then, the icing on the cake was that they brought me a dry ass hamburger on a white bread bun for lunch yesterday! SERIOUSLY?! LOL! But as always, the nursing and medical staff were top notch. Now I don't feel like eating much at all. My ribs are still sore from wretching so hard. and now I probably don't have that little string in my incision anymore since they went back into that one! I just can't believe it took me down so fast. My gall bladder was fine in December.
  2. OK, will not give you TMI, but I am going thru some things right now and my life is not the easiest (poor baby - said sarcastically). What bring me to this question right now is my current condition. I am dealing with something with someone who I thought was my best friend and I can't stop crying. I really want candy....chocolate. Anything I can eat/binge on. What do you do? I quit smoking over a year ago and now can't (or shouldn't) eat what would normally make me feel better. I know that eating (even if it is chocolate) will not fix things or actually make me fee better, but the urge it still there and strong. This is making me cry worse. It hurts. Please tell me others understand what I am saying. I am open to any thoughts, stories, or suggestions. Please....I don't know what to do.
  3. Sparkykrause, I did experience that pain in the beginning, right below my belly button. I think it is the nerves that are cut as part of surgery that need to re-heal. I remember searching it on here and others had experienced it too. Only lasted a few days for me, so hopefully for you too. Janiestine, I'm sorry you are in so much pain, but I love your stay positive attitude! I'm so looking forward to your recipes!!! Claire, I'm glad you are stepping back a bit and focusing on the fluids. Sounds like that is what your body is preferring. When do you go for a post-op so you can talk to a NUT? Erin, don't be discouraged! 12lbs is fantastic. One thing you have to consider is that you are a lower BMI and you lose slower than those with a higher one. Yesterday was a weird one for me. I puked a little Water after drinking too much. I wasn't trying to, but a medicine got stuck and I needed more water to get down. It's like the excess water had no where to go so up it came. I then had some diarrhea too. sorry tmi. I'm getting more energy back in the day, but I still sleep a lot at night! kdidn and believieinnikki, hope you both are doing ok!
  4. I'm 11 days post-op and still on liquids. I've had a number of embarrassing moments which have sometimes been uncontrollable - I now carry extra knickers with me just in case. I had irritable bowel prior to the surgery so it's not entirely new to me, but the frequency and urgency have definitely increased. I'm really hoping it eases once I start on puréed foods. Sorry for TMI!
  5. ok now a different issue and one that is highly embarrassing....please understand I am not trying to be gross and this is the disclaimer to stop reading now if you don't want to get on the TMI bus but... Last night I had not 1 but 3 episodes of diarrhea-and I mean completely liquid-I could not control. Lost at least one nice pair of panties I loved, had to clean up a mess on the bathroom floor and was in tears showering to clean up 3 separate times. Understand, this has never happened to me before so I was quite shocked. No abdominal cramping, no warning what-so-ever. I was only able to get in 1.5 shakes yesterday and was pushing fluids but I had stopped taking my pro-biotics (cleared with my surgeon) 2 days ago because I felt they were upsetting my stomach...I plan on talking with my surgeon and will go see him earlier than next Monday if it continues but I have not seen anyone mention it before...there are so many new sensations with this procedure it is hard to really understand them completely until you actually go thought them...thanks for any insight.
  6. This might be tmi but I don't know who else to ask, when do you return to "intimate activities" after surgery?
  7. So I am 11 weeks out and down about 32 pounds since surgery. I know we shouldn't compare, but that seems really slow compared to some of the numbers that I've seen on here. I acknowledge that I need to get going on my exercise ( plan on doing 30 day shred today). I am eating about 800 calories per day and 60-80g Protein and around 60 carbs ( I know some people really reduce carbs but my Nut wants us to have some whole grains). I haven't lost anything in about 10 days and I feel like I've been stalled more than I've been losing. I am just really frustrated. Also, I feel like all of my weight loss has come from my boobs. So they're getting smaller while my gut still looks like I have a 30 week fetus in there. Also, this may be TMi, but my periods have been lasting two weeks or more, which is especially odd since I have a Mirena. I wonder if this is affecting my weight loss. Does anyone have any insight to share. HW: 276 Day of Surgery (11/25): 253 CW: 221 GW: 130
  8. Time to continue my journey. I'm home now, actually got home last night. Surgery went just fine. I do have some discomfort, primarily the incision site that they put the camera through. And it feels like I did lots of sit ups. The experience in the hospital was fine. That staff were all very friendly and helpful. The only weird thing for me, but apparently not surprising, was high blood sugars. One reading over 200. For 3 out of 4 readings they shot me up with insulin. Before release BS was 118. I was very motivated to come home as I couldn't get good rest there. They were taking vitals constantly (good thing I know) but didn't help sleep which was maybe a half hour at a time. Walked the first day and night and several times on day two, multiple laps. They took the cath out the morning of the second day and the drain right before I came home (didn't hurt but felt very strange). They warned that if a fever of over 101.5 to call them. I had a fever of 100.2 when I got home (none at hospital), took the pain med and went to sleep. It was 99.9 this morning and took the med again. Now 7 hours later no fever. Last night slept in my own bed with a long pillow on my side, actually was able to sleep on my side and feel pretty good this morning. It was so nice not to juggle the IV and drain. Also glad to be home as my cycle started today (sorry if tmi), so better here than there in my opinion. Have lots of post op meds. Have the anti-clotting injections, had two in the hospital and will begin self injection this afternoon. They also prescribed Actigall to prevent gallstones, and protonix. If needed I also have pain meds and anti-nausea meds. And for the meds I was taking previously they prescribed 15 days worth to be crushed and then I can resume the extended release if/or until no longer needed (blood pressure, effexor). The only other thing to take is my Vitamins. I chose Flintstones. LOL Have been enjoying an EAS shake this thus far and am up to 16g Protein and 10.5oz Fluid so have to work on that a bunch more, but didn't get out of bed until late so got a late start. Did keep a Water bottle next to bed for sips through the night. I guess that's enough of a novel for now. Off to read some more about everyone's experiences.

    Abdominal pain and excessive gas

By chance are you consuming a high amount of gassy vegetables? I have been going through these phases off and on and it is severe gas cramping along with a lot of flatulence and occasional diarrhea. Sorry for the TMI. Just trying to help. I found once I cut down my veggie intake a bit it smoothed out but still occasionally get it. Seems Brussels sprouts are a trigger for me. Also, I really like Cauliflower as well and that is known for causing gas. . This site has a little more information: http://howtostayhealthy.hubpages.com/hub/Foods-That-Make-You-Gassy-and-Bloated
  10. Hi to you all, Hope jeni and Ken that your surgeries go as well as mine has so far. I am glad Jen that Pam has her date now too, as you say she will be a professional by then via you. Zom , Sally and Nikki i am glad that you are doing well too.i am sure that we will have difficult days in the coming weeks months and years but i have to say that my surgery has been so much better than expected. I had no staples, catherter or drain and i was glad to get rid of my appendages. Drip down last night so free at last, just mild discmfort around the holes but i even managed to sleep a little on my side on night 2 which i was not expecting. I had a quite acute lower abdominal spasm earlier in the night which felt like i needed to have diarrhoea, but nothing happened but am parping which a good sign. Dull abdo ache so i think i am starting to feel constipated. TMI i know but we need to share these things. When i get home later today i will start to take Benefiber which was advised by my variatric nurse. You just add it to any Fluid and it is colourless and apparently tasteless and it keeps you regular and sorts out constipation. I got it on Amazon before i came in, something you might want to consider. Erin i can see what you mean about new job and new start. They are only expecting you to eat what you do now, not what you did before. It sounds like you are really enjoying it too which is great. At the time it felt so brave to go back to work so soon but it clearly worked for you. I am sure that you ate missing eating with your family but hopefully the variety you can eat will increase soon and you will feel more able to. Kim you sound like you ate doing great too. Nnegrete, i do hope you feel more positive soon, strange about the avocado fetish, i suppose we will all have them. I think that is why i was struggling before the op, it felt like a permanent bereavement of things i couldn't do again. I was so sad when we were in Key West for a few days at the beginning of the year because every day felt like that. I am hoping that was my way of preparing myself and that those feelings will not be as strong afterwards. Stay strong, you HAVE made the right decision and things will feel better, in time you might even manage those avocados, and you are losing weight! We are all there with you, just hang on in there. Take care and be careful out there, we are flooding big time over here, worst floods for decades and you are in the middle of terrible snow storms. Claire

    February 2014 post op losers

I'm so glad you updated, Claire! You too, Zom. I can never remember exactly what your user name is so I'm calling you Zom. I'm glad everyone is doing so well. I'm relieved. I was more worried for you all than I realized. I am doing really well. I'm only consuming around 200-300 calories a day. I sip fluids continuously. I've struggled with not being able to eat dinner with my family. Not because I felt hungry but because I wanted the food. I have lost 8 pounds as of today. I feel like it could be more but I'm a little constipated. TMI but the truth.

How was your 5:2 day today?

I heard a keynote speech today that floored. It was about business but applies to US ladies. I will share more and ask if any of you would try a 90 day challenge with me.....more to follow. M2g, I will not be with Steven long term...would be a disaster so I am enjoying and more importantly learning from the NOW. I was surprised it was mutual is all. I left out/deleted some of my post as TMI but he told me he could see my ab muscles and and fitness (I didn't ask but sometimes he reads my mind). I have decided that I have been given a gift to know someone who sees me and is honest with me (about the bad too) and is bold enough to say it. The gift is to see myself through kinder eyes then my own- honest but kind. This relates to paragraph one...changing our inner voices. More on that later.....
  13. This might be TMI...but we all get excited about going down a clothing size, right? I've just purchased the smallest underwear I've been able to wear since about age 9 and a whopping 3 sizes since my surgery. Women, we KNOW that's a big difference. Woo hoo!
  14. I just want to say this to those who are newly banded. If you are weighing yourself every single day and get disappointed that it's not moving every day, then you need to stop weighing yourself every day or know that the scale will fluctuate anywhere from 3 to 9lbs per day. You retain Water and it will go up. Our bodies fluctuate weight every day. What I weigh today may not be what I weigh tomorrow. This is the very same thing that like any other diet will make you fail. If you can't adjust your mind to the numbers on the scale without being disappointed or sad then you need to get rid of your scale. When I weigh myself and I see the scale go up a few pounds its okay. I might be retaining water or need to move my bowels tmi I know but its true or maybe I did not sleep good the night before. If you are doing everything right then stop worrying when the scale doesn't move. Some people go for months and don't lose weight. Normal weight loss for lapband patients is 1 to 2 pounds PER WEEK. Yes that is right 1 to 2lbs a week. Anything more then that is a plus. Put your scales away and concentrate on healing. The first six weeks you probably will not lose one pound and might even gain a few. Your body has to catch up now since it went from 3 to 4, 000 calories a day to maybe not even 500 on Clear liquids. It's holding on to every bit of fat it can right now. Did you gain all your weight in two weeks? No so you wont lose it in two weeks either. If you are disappointed this soon in the game, then what will you really do when you don't lose for six months because it happens. Be patient and know that it will happen.
  15. Oh bummer on the nausea. So far I've skipped that since leaving hospital. I haven't had any gas pains as such but feel bloated at times and pretty 'burpy' at others. I'm honestly finding eating the biggest challenge - so full so quick. And of course I've begin reading the forums and comparing myself to everyone else who seems to be sculling Water and shakes like no ones business. I find I'm better with warmer stuff so once I'm driving I think I might go get some of the tony ferguson Soups for more Protein. Anyway - awkward personal question coming - but have you pooped since surgery? Sorry I know it's possible tmi but I haven't and I know I'm not really eating much but I'm starting to wonder if I should take something? Gonna try some apple purée today to see if that works for some fibre. I laughed when you said you'd already been on the scales! I jokingly asked the Dr what size my stomach was that he removed because I was curious and trying to be a bit funny... I thought I'd wait for a week after surgery so maybe tomorrow ( I think I read somewhere that someone put on weight and I'd be devo'd for that to be me!)

    Greasy Hair....

I get 80+ grams of protein a day so I hope I don't need more. But I've noticed other changes too. My face is clearing up and skin tone is evening out so that is a good thing. My breath is awful. I've had a constant TOM for 2 weeks now. Sorry if tmi. But I guess I didn't realize all of the changes my body is going through 7 1/2 weeks out.
  17. 6 days post-op, you still probably have a lot of edema and swelling. I'm sure your surgical team will tell you this as well. And are you having regular BM's (TMI I know)? I'd guess not, so that contributes to it as well. I know it's hard to avoid the scale now because we expect drastic change but some folks take a little longer to heal than others. Willing to bet after another week or so you'll notice a big difference on the scale. For now, take care and rest up. Congrats on a successful surgery!
  18. Hello All, I am getting my sleeve Feb 11 at 9 am! I have been lurking here for months, and I have learned so much! I want to say thanks to everyone for sharing and being so open and honest. I was hoping to reach out to someone who has a similar surgery date, or anyone who maybe wants to keep in touch and support each other in what seems to be a potentially difficult first few weeks. I am so proud to be able to soon sit on the loser's bench... Side question: I have a runny nose, itchy throat, no cough or fever. It came on Friday night and doesn't seem to be getting worse. Mucus is clear (sorry if TMI)...they wouldn't cancel for this, do you think! Thanks for reading!

    Seven months out...and sinking!

I've been banded since 5/13. I've lost 55 lbs and love my band. I had a problem at first of band being to full. They removed from 4 cc down to 1/2 cc the 1st month and I've been fine up till now. I notice that I'm not really hungry but I can eat more than I was plus I am having severe I mean severe flatulence. I no that's probably TMI but has anyone had this problem? If you stay on low side of fills does it stretch out or what? If anyone ever experienced any of these problems please let's communicate. I go back first part of March and am so afraid of getting a fill due to the pain I was in with it initially. Thanks! !
  21. Wow it's been a while! In the past Year leading up to my 5th bandaversary I feel like my life has went in to the dumps. I have to admit I've gained weight and that is greatly effecting me. Let me go back to Oct 2012 I decided I was going to get merina (this evil device) and that's when it all started. Yes my life changed and by that I mean my weight my mood my everything. I became a coach potato depressed person. I felt like I was going to bleed to death the first 6 months (sorry TMI). Month 7-8 gained another 20 lbs and then another few So I finally had the thing removed because well I started producing large cysts like grapefruits and well hence my frustration. I've been trying to get it together but well apparently it's not working. I did get a fill actually 2 since... and a slight unfill. Jan 1 I decided I should join the gym and stop being a coach potato and I've been doing pretty good with that but I haven't really lost much maybe 3.3 lbs and gained back 1.8 UGH. I know I need to learn to work this band again and not eat around it but wow it's a challenge I've become dependent on soup and hot liquid to losen this bad boy up so I can eat =( and well I need to stop it. Last 5 days I've only had hot liquid in AM (coffee) and I've actually been eating breakfast 1 egg and 2 slices of turkey bacon. I need help I need Idea's and support (a buddy... email, text and phone would be awesome and LBT) to get back to losing and working this band. let the suggestions and support unleash on a side note wow LBT has really changed.

    nightmares about food

I used to dream about raw meat when I was pregnant, it was awful because it would make me sick, I would wake up gagging. Thankfully i never puked in bed! ( sorry tmi) I think this is the brain trying to find out why we don't eat that thing anymore, it gave us so much pleasure, maybe we just need a reminder? Darn pleasure centers! Oh I didn't crave raw meat while I was pregnant, I could barely stand it because I could smell it at 100 yds! (LOL) And I am a serious meat eater! So far no weird dreams about the surgery, I am in for my last consult this week then the hit the ground running on my tests and hoped to be sleeved in March. I am sure I will have a few weird dreams before this is over!
  23. TMI WARNING Are any of you having issues with constipation? I've had a couple of episodes and the only thing that helped was Milk of Mag. and they taste of that stuff is just awful. Plus the excrement was so big and hard it stopped up my toilet! Had to go to Home Depot to buy a new plunger.
  24. LuckyT

    very confused

Oh, I should probably add that my surgeon really wanted me to have the gastric bypass when I went through the pre-op for the lap band, I'm still torn on whether or not I should have listened to him as I was afraid of how invasive bypass surgery is/was and turned to the lap band because the sleeve wasn't being approved in 2010 by my insurance company. I did learn a lot from having the lap band such as eating healthier and smaller portions. Unfortunately I only lost about 35 pounds and then gained almost 50 pounds back when I quit having band filled due to constant vomiting and a constant stuck feeling in my chest. Sorry if TMI but it was not a good feeling & I'd rather you know about it.

    Still can't drink

I'm walking at least 10 mins every 4 hours.....yesterday I had some shopping to do so I was out walking (slowly) for like 2 hours. Not too much pain, only take painkillers at night before I pass out. Make sure you're in bed stretching and act like you're walking. I've already lost 10 plus pounds which is crazy but I'm staying super hydrated and going to the bathroom a lot. Movement and hydration is key....also TMI I'm in my period so I'm sure that's also causing some pain
