    February Surgery ?

had my revision surgery yesterday in Tijuana. They said I didn't get a video of my surgery since it was complicated. I'm a little sore today but feeling good overall. The gas is for real. I feel sorry for my husband stuck in this hospital room with me farting. lol

I'm curious what products you'll use as a substitute. I always think it's a bit complicated (and most likely doesn't taste the same) when having to use substitutes.

  4. Hello, did anyone purchase some type of travel insurance that also included medical coverage in case of complications? Or 2 separate policies? I’ll be going on 2/13/20. thank you,
  5. Trying not to feel defeated but it’s hard! I’ve lost slowly right out of the gate. HW was 285 in August , currently 218. surgery was 8/14. I have had zero complications, have felt pretty darn good from the start. Always met my protein and water goals. My dietician wants me to up my calories to 1200 a day, which I have been able to do sporadically. I was on a 3 week stall but just lost 1.6 lbs. She also does not care about carbs. She’s like... eat them. Wants me to reach around 90g of protein and 125 g carbs. I started at orange theory fitness (high intensity interval training) and have been going 3x a week. They are hour long classes and my average calorie burn is 450 per class. They are very difficult. When I started this I wanted to be 180 lbs. that is still 30 lbs higher then “normal” BMI. Now I just want to get below 200. Will it happen for me??? It’s just so frustrating bc it seems like for some people the weight just melts off. I guess this shouldn’t be a surprise bc by the time I decided on surgery, and after a lifetime of yo yo dieting I had a hard time losing even 10 lbs.
  6. So, 13 years ago, I weighed 350 pounds. I made a commitment to change, and lost 100 pounds through dieting. After that, in Sept. 2013, I had a sleeve procedure and hernia fix (without complications) and went from 250 down to 155 (my lowest) in 2016. That's when the problems began. I have been suffering with terrible on and off gastritis, constant GERD and reflux, stomach ulcers, and my hiatal hernia needs repair again. I have had two recent endoscopies, including one with a Bravo probe, and the surgeon claims the only way to permanently fix the problem to to revise from a sleeve to RNY. The problem is, I do NOT want full on bypass. I am terrified. I like my life as it is, and I can't imagine going through the surgical recovery process again. I am remarried now, and have a ten year old daughter, and I can't imagine what our family meals/vacations/birthday parties are going to look like post-RNY. I am at the point with my sleeve that I have reincoporated most foods, and eat relatively normally. All of this decision making stress has made me go off the rails with my eating plan, and I have regained almost all the weight I lost (back up to 230 pounds), partially because I have been eating everything in sight, preparing for the moment after which I will "never be able to eat normally" again. I approach every meal with a "last supper" mentality. I enjoy food and beer and traveling, and I don't want to constantly be the odd man out at functions. I am tempted to have the revision for purely vanity reasons - a quick weight loss fix for what I've regained. Nothing I am currently suffering is imminently dangerous, nor is it constant - I have excruciating flare ups. My surgeon will not fix my hernia without doing the whole conversion, because he claims it's "useless" to fix one without doing the other. So, here's what I ask everyone...to anyone who's had the revision...is it worth it? I'm tempted to just keep taking my double dose nexium and drinking my Gaviscon, and enjoying my life as normal. I have a husband who loves and accepts me, and I don't want to do this and risk my life for a surgery simply for appearance's sake. If I can live with my current pain, can't I ride this out with my little sleeve which worked so well until depression made me abuse it? Do I just get back on track, or go under the knife? I have never been so torn. Please help!!! Thank you for listening
  7. This has been a source of heart ache ever since my gastric bypass surgery on August 14, 2019. Right out of the gate I was losing at a slower rate then average And definitely slower than a lot of the folks here or in other Facebook communities. My starting weight was 285 and this morning I weighed in at 2:18.4 pounds. I am 5’6” and 41 years old. Since the beginning I have met all protein goals and on fluid goals and I have had zero complications from the surgery. All in all I live a pretty normal life considering I had my insides rerouted. Starting in January I added Orangetheory fitness to my regimen which is an hour long HIIT class. I go three times a week and It’s hard. Like very hard. I burn on average about 450 cal per class. My dietitian wants me to be around 1200 cal right now especially since I added the workouts. I have had starches and grains and that makes me nervous because I’m a lifelong dieter but my dietitian has zero concerns about carbs. Obviously she wants me to to be making healthy choices around carbs like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, etc. which I do. When I asked her point blank about carbohydrate goals for the day she said 125 g. I’m just feeling a little defeated this morning. I am almost 6 months out from surgery and was definitely hoping to be below 200 pounds right now and now I’m wondering if I’ll ever get below 200 pounds. I guess I just am looking for support or stories of people have gone through similar rate of loss and have continued and meet their goals. My doctor told me at six months it becomes much more difficult to lose weight. But for me it’s Felt hard since the beginning.I used voice text to write this so I apologize if anything sounds crazy.
  8. hi there, I am having a sleeve at the end of May and due to travel on a 2 week holiday in the beginning of August. The holiday has been booked for some time, do you think I will be ok going on holiday 7 weeks after my wls? I suppose I am worried that there may be complications, or that I will still be struggling to drink or eat anything. I am not bothered about the all inclusive food (looking forward to not gaining for once) but I am more concerned that I might be at the airport struggling to get liquids down or keep food down at this stage. Any advice? anyone been on holiday so soon after wls?

    Forced to do Bypass

I had bypass in Nov 2015 and haven’t had a single complication at all. I’ve maintained over 140 lbs of weight loss and it was the best decision I’ve made.
  10. the sleeve is actually the first part of a duodenal switch. They do a VSG on your stomach and then bypass a large part of your small intestine. They used to do the DS in two stages - starting with the VSG and later adding the intestinal bypass - and then they started offering VSG as a standalone surgery when they realized some people could lose all the weight they wanted with just the VSG. The DS is not like the RNY at all - that's a stomach bypass (although a few inches of the small intestine is bypass - a foot or so - much less than in the DS), whereas the DS is an intestinal bypass (with a VSG stomach). I'm not sure what to tell you. The DS is a much stronger surgery, so it'll be easier to lose weight and keep it off, but on the flip side, there is also a greater potential for complications with it (moreso than the RNY, too). You have to be REALLY diligent about taking vitamins for the rest of your life, or you can get really sick really quickly. Also, a lot of doctors these days know how to deal with RNY and VSG patients because there are so many of us out there, but many aren't really familiar with DS, so you may need to be more of an advocate for yourself (and may even have to explain your anatomy to them). I would have considered a DS if my insurance would have covered it (they wouldn't) because I had over 200 lbs to lose, but with 100-ish lbs, I'm not sure. Although I did have a friend who had it who was 100 lbs overweight pre-surgery, and she's been very happy with it.

    January 2020 Surgery Date

So sorry you had complications. I really do know how you feel and want to encourage you not to be discouraged. If they’re keeping you in hospital it’s for the best. Many of us rush to get home after surgery but my daughter was in hospital 3 nights after gastric bypass and for 9 months post op she was sick with vomiting, kidney stones and eventually a complete bowel obstruction that required surgery. Please try to relax and know that if they’re keeping you longer than you expected, it means you need to be there. Better to spend one week in hospital than spend 9 months miserable and back in the hospital. Peaceful thoughts to you.

    Pain in left shoulder area

Yes - A leak is a serious complication! If you’re having symptoms of a leak, you should go to the ER immediately for evaluation.

It is possible to find a new bariatric surgeon where you live now. I moved 250 miles after my first surgery and got a new surgeon as soon as I moved. You need one to keep track of your yearly bloodwork. Plus if you end up with any complications you will want one that is familiar with you.
  15. So far so good. My primary's clearance was contingent on my cardiologist which I have just received after Echo and Stress Test (I have previous cardiac issues). The lab work was extensive and the pulmonary routine. The GI study and Gall Bladder were accomplished the same day. Its a very busy process but Im now down the psychological clearance. No kidding WellStar's clearance program is extensive but Im sure that means less complications later. Best
  16. Hi, past-VSGers. Did anyone get a leak? What was that experience like? I'm 6 years post a very successful, no complications, VSG (the best thing I did for myself!!: happy, happy, happy; looking good; down to a size 10; not afraid of pictures; sexy, confident, etc.). BUT I've gained some weight [25-27 pounds] in the past 2+ years, and am having a hard time losing it. Bad back, bad foot, so intense exercise is out. I want another VSG, but the risk of a leak is real (due to decreased vascularization of where the stomach would again be cut); and no, I don't think my surgeon-friend will do it anyway. But I'm just curious... How bad is the 'leak experience'...? Did it ever stop!!!? Just curious. Thank you for any replies from those who've had a leak.
  17. Congrats on getting approved. It's a process not a race. Use this time to get prepared. Insurance companies know that it's cheaper in the long run to pay for these bariatric surgeries up front. It saves them millions long term when we dont get long term complicated health issues like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease etc. Good luck!
  18. I'm new to the forum. I had my sleeve done six years ago and I loved it...that is until 4 months ago when medication was no longer keeping my reflux in check. I've lost 150lbs and have maintained that loss. I had a hiatal hernia repaired last month and I still have gerd symptoms and I'm terrified of having a revision. Has anyone had a revision completed? If so which one? Did you have complications? Did you have hair loss again? Vitamin deficiencies? Any complications at all?
  19. I had hernia repair, gastric sleeve review and esophagus repair. I was out two weeks. Then had complications and out for an additional week. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using BariatricPal mobile app

    CIGNA DENIED

I realize that a lot of people have higher BMI's than me. I turned 60 this year which almost makes me feel if when the insurance receives these pre-certs if that plays into their decision. I feel my age might be used against me here but idk. The thing is both of my parents died in their 60's due to complications of diabetes. They both had heart disease and heart surgery. They had many different illnesses and I have been fortunate so far as far as that goes. I just want to make a positive change now before it is too late!

    Regrets?

No regrets, it saved my life and gave me a new start. This girl huffed and puffed down the block, to her car, and is not preparing to do a race and does 6 to 8 miles in a day. Aside from typical pain at the big incision (where the stomach comes out), I've been blessed with no complications and haven't gotten sick once yet. Yes, I've had uncomfortable bloating, and some times feel nauseated (mostly my vitamins, which I'm changing) but that's all. It's been such a tremendous blessing, but it's truly a personal decision. All I can suggest is to educate yourself, listen to your surgeon and nutritionist and, if you make the choice, don't let others get you down.
  22. Had my gastric sleeve surgery last week on Thursday with no complications thankfully. Since day one I have been able to drink water just fine, take pills also...well it’s been 6 days and have tried to get as close as 64 oz of water a day as I could and I’ve been drinking some broth, and some sipping on protein shakes per my doctor she said main focus is water not protein but I am hungry! Is this normal? Yesterday I thought it was a mental thing but today I actually feel my empty stomach growling? Any one have any advise?

Hi Nay and Batfink (and everyone else from the UK), I am having the sleeve in turkey in May. Absolutely terrified, but looking forward to a new me. Has anyone here been to Turkey? I am less worried about going abroad than I am of complications post sleeve. I am also worried about getting my protein in after as I love carbs and don't eat a lot of meat. Would love to share experiences, fears, worries as I have no one in RL to talk to about this whole thing.
