February 2024 Surgery Buddies?
Holly W. replied to NickelChip's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was February 2nd. 8 weeks post-op & it's been so much more overwhelming than I thought! Food hurts going down & feels like rocks are piling up in my stomach. This is only 3-4 very small bites, well chewed, approved foods that are moist, eating slowly & no drinking water with meals. Sometimes I'm in terrible pain! Even water feels like it's backing up. My doctor scheduled me for an endoscopy Wednesday thinking I might have a stricture & possibly an ulcer. My stomach still hurts more than I thought it would in certain areas. Can anyone else relate? I thought I was very well prepared for this surgery but gosh! -

March 2024 Surgery Buddies!
Emeraude replied to Pines's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So glad your continuing to feel great!!! I've been able to get 2 Protein shakes & my water so far. But, that's about it. I can have creamed soups(strained) if I've met the shake& water goals. I'll probably have a bit more energy if I could get a littler more calories. Which creamed soups do you like? And that's a good point about the supplements. I haven't started taking them. My doctor starts vitamins 2 weeks post surgery. I bet that will help a lot! I need to order some. Was planning on getting chewable (all in one). Which type do you like? -

My program requires it of everyone across the board, 2 weeks clear liquids, with 4-5 protein shakes a day. It's just their protocol. I dislike it but I learned a new thing, I can do liquids for 2 weeks. I've been very rigid about it and these past few days it's been harder cravings wise, but the days are going by. -

Anyone else having unbelievable cravings. I want pizza soooo bad. I think I’m sick and tired of being on this liquid diet and all I want to do is taste some of the sauce. Anything is better than limited liquids. I’m 9 days post op and hopefully next week I’ll be able to transition to puree. -
Weight loss plateau so early?
NickelChip replied to Ssedmak's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was curious what causes the 3-week stall, and this is what I found out in doing a little digging. When we experience calorie deprivation, whether a diet or after surgery or just not having the usual amount to eat for a bit, our bodies first turn to our store of glycogen to keep things running. Glycogen is a form of stored sugar, and for each gram of glycogen in the body, it's bound to 3 grams of water. So, if you burn a gram of glycogen for energy, you lose 3 additional grams of water as a bonus. Your body will always burn glycogen before it burns fat because that's how we've evolved to handle brief food shortages. Which means most of the weight you lose right after surgery is not actually fat, but water (and that's fine!). But after a few weeks, your body is low on glycogen and you still haven't hunted down a wooly mammoth to eat, so now it starts burning fat to keep running. At the same time, it does what it can to replenish those glycogen stores with whatever calories you have coming in, because it's a little worried you won't survive the next famine. Glycogen makes me think of the $100 cash my mom always kept stashed in her sock drawer for an emergency. If she used any of it, as soon as she got more cash, she replenished that first before putting anything in her wallet. Remember, each gram of glycogen comes with 3 grams of water. So you might burn 4 grams of fat, but also replenish 1 gram of glycogen (along with the 3 grams of water that tag along for the ride), and the scale shows you the same weight. Now you feel like nothing has happened and start to panic. But you still lost fat, which is the goal. And once your body does what it needs to do to replenish that glycogen, it'll start showing on the scale again. I really wish doctors would explain this process to patients before surgery! Some mention plateaus in general, but they rarely explain what causes them, and the 3 week stall is the type of thing they really should explain in detail so we know what's going on because it's basically a given. -
How long after surgery did you have to go for check ups?
The Greater Fool replied to KathyLev's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
3 weeks (to get staples & drain removed), monthly for first year, then quarterly for the next 1.5 years, then annually, then I moved out of state. I was a special case because I started at an exceptionally high weight, so Doc wanted to monitor me much more closely than most. Gosh, as the years go by I feel like my experience and my Doc's philosophy of weight loss is very out of touch with folks today. Good luck, Tek -

ugh. the constipation blues. i didn't poop for 13 DAYS after surgery. omg. i developed an M.O. to battle constipation over the next several weeks: 1) every day, i would add 2 tsp Benefibre to my morning protein shakes. 2) if i didn't poop after 2-3 days, i would take a Miralax 3) if I didn't poop 2 days after that, i would take Milk of Magnesia. 4) if i didn't poop 2 days after that i would insert a glycerin suppository. 5) if i did'nt poop 6 hours after that, i would insert another one. LUCKILY, i didn't need to figure out what to do if the second suppository didn't work. omg. i did this for about a year. after a year i got more "regular" and didn't even need the daily Benefibre anymore. And when I say "regular" i mean i poop maybe every 2-3 days. which is a huge departure to pre-op when i used to poop MULTIPLE times in a single day (sorry TMI). i think so long you aren't super uncomfortable, you are good. but if you are starting to feel pain and/or discomfort, then you probably need to come up with a plan to combat it, whatever M.O. it may be.

February 2024 Surgery Buddies?

Ok I need everyone’s coping strategies for dealing with being so cold the whole time. It’s 16 C ( 60 F) this morning in athens. I’ve « burnt » through all the warm clothes I bought with me so will have to drop laundry to be done today. Because I have a whole week left here. Yesterday a collègue touched my hand as I was passing him some papers and audibly gasped at how cold I was and asked if I was okay and then gave me his jacket to put over my knees during the meeting so I know it’s not all in my head. I have the heating on and a hot water bottle for night but I just can’t warm up. Im pretty sure I must be very anemic right now and will check that with blood tests when I get back home. I know I sound like a broken record but I’m just really really struggling with being so freezing the whole time. It’s miserable. My hands are so cold I’m having issues typing for work … -
yea she told me I was approved and my doctor would have the results in the portal within the week

How many 2 oz. purees per day?
nmooreonline replied to Nan CC's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just hit 3 weeks post-op today. I’m also on 2oz purée food to be SLOWLY eaten over 30 minutes. At this stage, protein shakes no longer count towards water goal of 48-64oz. I have also still been hungry and felt like I needed more substance. Met with my surgeon yesterday and he said the hunger hormones are still adjusting in my body, and it may take a few more weeks to feel less hungry. Also, I know some of the hunger is mental. Some things that have helped me are to actually take 30 minutes to eat the 2oz- which is quite difficult for me to slow down that much. I also stick to 16oz of water slowly sipped until around 8am. Protein shake slowly sipped 10am-12pm (I started adding a serving of collagen peptides to my morning protein shake (my program says collagen peptides are not a complete source of nutrition, so should not be taken as a full meal)- this has put me at more calories and protein earlier in the day. Lunch around 2pm, dinner around 5:30/6pm, another protein shake or 1oz purée a little later if needed. Goal is 60-75 grams of protein -
The insanity of American health insurance
FifiLux replied to NickelChip's topic in Insurance & Financing
Yeah I haven't looked in to the plastics side of things as to what is covered for me. I do recall it being mentioned at one point by the psychiatrist I had to go see and I think he said it had to be a few years and then a decision process but at this stage it is too soon to be thinking about that. My big (literally and figuratively) problem area is my legs, thighs in particular. Even after loosing so much weight, with a bit more to go, there is no way I would wear anything that would show anything above my ankles. As it is I have to go back into hospital next week for a few days to have the tube in my stomach removed and them to monitor me to see if my leak has fully closed. -
Shadows of Postpartum Circumstance
summerseeker replied to Aunty Mamo's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Congrats on your surgery and your perfect recovery. Your woolly symptoms are from the anaesthetic. It might take a few more days until you recover from the baby brain. Not everyone has the internal gurgle but I am told its quite loud and funny. I had the hormone storm in a big way at about a week out too. It wasn't a side effect that anyone had explained to me beforehand. I had to ask my questions on here. Female bodies are wonderous, mysterious things. I didn't feel my smaller stomach at all but I did think that it had been moved into my chest as soon as I began eating. -
Anyone for October 2020?
Yray replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi there wondering how everyone is doing???? Current weight is 142 5”3 I eat every 2-3 hrs snack and have three bigger meals which is breakfast lunch and dinner. Still could only have about 5-7 spoon fool of the larger meals. Rice does not agree with me I figure it may never. Alcohol hits me super fast so I have to be very careful! -
OP you really must stick to your plan one week post op. Yes it is really difficult for some people and I'm sorry you're one of them. Solid food a week after surgery can honestly be dangerous. You won't feel full because the nerves to your stomach have been cut and sutured and you need to let them grow back. This is why you can eat anything. You CAN, but you SHOULD NOT. Drink drink drink. If you meet your fluid goals I suspect your hunger will be easier to ignore.

I get my face and neck done 2xs a week. My arms and stomach 1x a week on alternate visits. My face is smooth and tight. My neck has a bit of loose skin but not sure how it would be had I not been getting the cryotherapy. At over 300 pounds I had a double double chin so I'm pretty happy with the results so far. My phone quit working on face recognition. until I realized I needed to update my photo. And my driver's license pic looks nothing like me anymore, so I'll be making a trip to the DMV soon. The last couple times I had to show my ID they did a double take. LOL GL @ChunkCat finding a treatment that suits you. And I wouldn't give that rude mall person a cent of your money.

Looking for a reversal doctor
catwoman7 replied to rrs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
unfortunately, the sleeve is not reversible - they remove 75-80% of your stomach and throw it out. However, if you're really early out, I wouldn't start worrying about this yet. You could be dealing with buyer's remorse (common during the first few weeks after surgery) or a minor complication that is likely "fixable". I agree with NickelChip - we need a lot more information to comment on your situation. -
Surgery was Mon 3/18.. questions
NickelChip replied to Rachael13's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The day I got home from the hospital, I had two Premier Protein shakes. The next day, I had 2 protein shakes, 16oz of bone broth sipped over a very long period of time, and 2 Tbsp apple sauce. On day 3, I managed to eat 1/4 c of very thin Cream of Wheat made with high protein milk along with the 2 shakes. On day 4, I had 2 shakes and one 5oz cup of Greek yogurt. Even 4 weeks out, 1/2 cup of anything but soup in one sitting would be a challenge. But the only thing my doctor's office really cared about the first several days was fluids. -
My Surgery date is 2/3/22. I am getting sleeved in Mexico. Pre-op diet starts in about 3 weeks. Who else is having WLS next month?

Another observation on feeling full
Arabesque replied to Bypass2Freedom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, because of the nerves that are cut during the surgery, messages about being full or having had enough, either don’t get through in the same way or are distorted. It takes about 8 weeks for hi to fully heal & therefore the messages to start getting through accurately. Also, liquids & purées go through your tummy more quickly & before you might feel full. Add in the small potions & sipping & eating slowly & you won’t feel full. It’s why it’s so important to stick to the portion size recommendations we are given. Once you start to eat a little more in regards to portion size and solid foods & you are more healed, you’ll start to feel when you’ve had enough and start to feel your restriction. PS - It takes at least 20 minutes for the full signal to get from your tummy to your head so by the time you register you are full, it’s easy to have eaten more than you actually need. Some of us take even longer to register we are full. Aim, not to feel full but to recognise when you’ve had enough. I still often ask myself do I need the next bite or just want it. Congrats on your surgery. -
When can I start weight lifting? or doing HIIT?
Spinoza replied to AmberFL's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I wasn't given any specific restrictions but I did lift my 15kg dog about a fortnight out and caused considerable pain to my biggest incision (where they removed my excess stomach). Took a couple of weeks to be pain free after that. I agree you should check with your team. They all seem to be slightly different. And proceed with caution - you have the rest of your life to get fit! -
December Surgery Buddies!
MLC3409 replied to AshleeHarvey's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Funny you mention that. I have seen a few people have gotten sick just before surgery. well, as far as the ones that passed neither of them was due to surgery complications. One was a drug overdose. She had so many issues after surgery and had to have a couple of emergency surgery to repair sutures. That however was on her! She did not follow the plan and less than three weeks post op she was eating Doritos. Well one c got lodged in her suture line and they had to repair it. She also over ate regular food and got some kind of blockage. the second one that passed she actually committed suicide. Now that MIGHT have been surgery related because your body goes through so many hormonal changes as well. So that is something that if you start feeling regret know that it is Normal but find a therapist to talk it out with. my other friend he had issues during surgery and they ended up putting him in a medical coma for two weeks. He was a large guy like me, well he was bigger by like 60 pound at around 450. I don’t know what all happened but I know he was having bleeding issues. But he was ok in a couple weeks and he was doing well the last time I talked to him. my other friend I think she just gave up and has gone back to “normal “ for her. So she is gaining weight. I do know I have to work on my mental health and stay disciplined after. And it shows how stuff we can control and some stuff we can’t. We just have to go into this knowing it is only a tool not a cure. so since you have kids I would really say make sure you have a therapist. It will be rough for a few weeks after surgery I’m sure. everything else is out of our hands. I know it is cliche but I follow the AA motto. Accept the things we can not change, Change the things we can, And may God grant us the wisdom to know the difference. all I’m in charge of is what food I put in my body and how much I exercise. Everything else is out of my hands.
