I have never lost a lot of weight before… so I hope it will be obvious;). I won’t care after it’s done telling people - just afraid of telling people before for some reason. Maybe it’s because I came close once before and the opportunity was taken from me (soap opera story) and I am scared this time something will happen again. I have insurance coverage for bariatrics this time so it should happen! I know I will need to say something for the time off after surgery so people will know by the time I have the date. I just don’t know when right now. I will have to go through an endoscopy in august, maybe then.

I also felt a lot of hunger post surgery. Everyone told me I was wrong and wasn't actually hungry, but I know my body: I was hungry. I talked to my surgery team and they said it does happen to a small number of people - they don't lose their hunger hormone. My bariatric therapist said it's especially common in people with bipolar disorder, which I have. Eventually I was put on metformin and topamax, which have both helped. BTW, I was losing weight the whole time, and I had good restriction, but being hungry all the time was MISERABLE. Talk to your surgery center. There are options.

I really hate stalls!!!!!

The scale hasn't moved in about 8 days. I haven't gained this time, which I'm very happy about, but I haven't lost either. I fluctuate between the same 2 pounds (between 343 - 341). I have PCOS, and I was told that will make it harder and take longer to actually lose the weight and keep it off. But it's REALLY frustrating and annoying. It's harder to lose the weight now than it was when I was just doing keto. I read that we're not supposed to do keto after bariatric surgery, but MAN it's tempting!!! I know this will pass, I know this is normal, but I HATE that it's normal. I'm 2 1/2 months out from surgery, so I'm not surprised I'm getting hit again. But UGH!!!!! -
The vaping thing is proving harder than I thought. I made it from 10am to 4pm today, and two hours of that was a nap. This is going to be tough. I'm going to leave it in the living room tonight when I go to bed. My meal plan for the 20th-25th is going to need some adapting - it's very meaty and I don't eat meat (just fish, eggs, dairy and veg). They said that was fine, but it's requiring a little more legwork from me. I'm thinking of making a little website for pescatarian bariatric patients, because there is NOT a lot out there. Especially because I have some food allergies, and it is a bear trying to find smoothies that don't have banana or avocado in them! I need to get it all planned out ahead or I'm going to struggle. I don't use cannabis at this time, but I'm glad your doc found something that worked for you!

Good for you! I've ordered my bariatric vitamins, pre-surgery drinks, protein powder and drinks. I'm getting nervous, too. I'll probably be second-guessing myself up to the last minute!

The best Psychologists specialising in weight loss surgery?
lizonaplane replied to Lornapc's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Honestly, it's very hard here in the states to find bariatric-competent therapists too. I am just using the one from my surgery center, and it takes months to schedule an appointment with her. I really like listening to podcasts made by/for the bariatric community - Our Sleeved Life Podcast and Breaking down Nutrition with Dr. Susan Mitchell, and check out "the sleeved dietitian" on Instagram. She has a program called TRIBE. Good luck! -

Thanks so much. There isn’t much help here at all for psychologists specialising in bariatrics so I have to go further afield. Thanks for all the info :) -
The best Psychologists specialising in weight loss surgery?
lizonaplane replied to Lornapc's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You will not be able to use an out of state therapist, because they are not licensed in your state. It's very stupid, but in this country the practice of medicine and psychology is based on state licensure. You may be able to go to psychologytoday.com and use their search feature to find a bariatric therapist in your state. It can be anywhere in your state if you can do remote, but it can't be out of state, unless they happen to be licensed in multiple states. EDIT: Just realized you are in Ireland. US therapists will not be able to treat you due to licensure issues. HOWEVER.... you may be able to find one who will work with you as a "coach" which doesn't require any license. There is also an Australian bariatric therapist (Georgie Beems?) who sees clients virtually, maybe the licensing issues are different? Talk to your bariatric center and see if they can refer you to someone. -

Mine was an actual bariatric patient herself. She was very knowledgeable with the entire process and what to expect. I also had virtual visits, so she may take out of state patients. Deana D. Johnson Therapeutic Greenhouse 120 Sister Pierre Drive STE 506 Towson, MD 21204 (443) 991-8461 -
The best Psychologists specialising in weight loss surgery?

Hi 👋 Now I know that my own “team” should have helped me with this. But they didn’t. Now that the world is a smaller place and consultations can happen online, does anyone have names of *reliable/responsible *well educated and certified Psychologists especially for us bariatric surgery patients? I didn’t see anyone pre-surgery and I know that I need to both address why I got so big - and - how to get over those issues - and - how to keep losing now. All of us have limited money, right?! I hate the idea of spending my kid’s college money (which is what any extra money we manage to save ultimately is), on a psychologist who sees one patient like me in a lifetime and has to look everything up before I get to her and after I leave. You know what I mean? It also can’t drag on forever.. I just don’t have the means to be going for more than six months or so. Ideas for across the globe welcomed ❤️ Xx Lorna -

Talk to your surgeon/dietician. If you have high blood pressure, they may recommend you reduce sodium below the generally recommended 2000mg a day, but it's not strictly a concern for people who are not sensitive to salt. None of the dieticians I've talked to about bariatric surgery has recommended any draconian limitations on salt. They haven't even mentioned sodium - just macros. I don't worry about sodium OR fat, just sugar, simple carbs, and protein. For constipation, it's unlikely you will be able to eat enough fiber to solve the problem with food. I was told that drinking enough fluid, exercising enough, and taking something like Miralax was what I should do. I have found that I only need Miralax occasionally as long as I drink coffee. -
I am on a facebook group "Bariatric Nutrition with Dr. Susan Mitchell" and recently she posted an article from a peer-reviewed journal that said there wasn't much evidence for not drinking after you eat long term. However, I find it hard to drink when I'm really full. I never wait after drinking to eat - my surgery center never said that was an issue. Congratulations on maintaining so long! That's amazing! For the anemia, see what the specialist says. What did your GP say? Iron needs to be taken at least 2 hours apart from calcium. And it might upset your stomach. There are preparations that are better (slow iron). You might try to get back in touch with your surgeon, too, if possible, but you seem to be doing great on your own. It's inspirational!

Hi, had ESG 6/29 and although it went very smoothly and I feel great, I have been crabby about liquid diet. I have been HUNGRY. I tried to find research about the healing process and justification for the full liquid diet for 2 weeks after ESG, but can't find anything at all. It just seems as though we are following more or less the same protocol as post-bariatric surgery, although I think the trauma to the stomach and healing period should call for something significantly less drastic. Especially since I am doing so well. Nonetheless, I have stuck with it, with the exception of allowing myself some hummus. I've lost a modest 8 pounds, but who wouldn't with no food and about 500 calories a day for 16 days! Now, my big concern is that of course I will gain weight after switching to a soft diet even if I follow it precisely, which will really be demoralizing. It's all had me rather irritable and I'm so curious to know others' experiences along this line.

I agree with finding a support group and therapist. It can be very hard to find a bariatric therapist, but check with your surgery center, they should have someone, but they might be booked out quite a ways. There is T.R.I.B.E, but I don't know too much about it. If you're on instagram it's "the sleeved dietician" and her group. There are also some good podcasts like "Our Sleeved Life Podcast" and Bariatric Nutrition with Dr. Susan Mitchell (Dr. Susan Mitchell has a facebook group that is nice). Good luck!

I found it hard to eat for several months after surgery. I learned that it really depends on what I eat. For example, ground meat and fish/shellfish are very easy for me to eat, but chicken breast is impossible. I can only eat 1-2 oz and it sits like a lump in my stomach and hurts. Try different things: beans, deli meat, cheese, etc, to see if that helps. Try taking smaller bites, slowing down, chewing more. Try keeping a food log to see when you have these problems more - see if it's after certain foods or certain times. Talk to your nutritionist and surgeon, and maybe even a bariatric therapist. Good luck!

This! I have so many extra protein powders and bariatric soups... Etc. for the soft food stage just sitting there. Ugh. What else did I wish I knew before my first surgery? I wish I did the bypass first. Sent from my SM-S908U using BariatricPal mobile app

They should have singles mixers for patients of bariatric clinics. That would seem to be the ideal scenerio to meet someone who totally understands and is in the same place in life. Maybe suggest it at your support groups.
-
I imagine the anxiety of having that conversation in a serious manor. UHG! I am in a FB bariatric group, and I know of a few couples who actually met in support groups and hit it off. I think that would be ideal in my situation. I think it tends to me more females than males in these types of groups which I guess could make things more difficult.

I agree with the above posters. Usually your Dietician will give you info about what your clinic wants you to take. My clinic is pretty basic on supplements. A bariatric vitamin twice daily, plus two 500 mg of calcium citrate, and the one thing they're different than most about is monthly B12 injections for the first year post op. Plus depending on your labwork post op, your vitamin/supplement regimen may change. Iron often has to be adjusted. Currently I take Bariatric Fusion chewables, but they're pretty gross. 🤢 I feel like I'll be switching to capsules very soon post op. I'm going to try Once Daily Bariatric Choice multivitamins. Any one else try these yet?
-
They are once a day multivitamin and they include your iron. I was also advised to take calcium citrate as well. I took the bariatric advantage chews for calcium in the beginning but later switched to an over the counter brand of calcium citrate that is a large pill.
-
For the first couple days you will definitely be taking small sips so you may want to go the chewable route if you don’t think you can swallow a pill that way. I found the bariatric advantage chewables to be tolerable. I switched to pro care health capsules soon after I was sure I could swallow them though because they aren’t cheap. I got samples from my nutritionist. I believe if you contact them they will send you samples through the mail.

Favorite sugar free and other low calorie sauces
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to ShoppGirl's topic in Food and Nutrition
I'm with some of the others, the SF stuff just doesn't do it for me. They taste off, leave me wanting, and are generally full of all sorts of bizarre ingredients that make them less food and more science experiment. I have learned to portion control the "regular" stuff and fully enjoy it. If I am eating 100g of pulled pork for instance, I really only need a very small amount of BBQ sauce to get the flavor I want and to be satisfied. So I might as well go for the good stuff, in appropriate amounts, and fully enjoy it vs. using more of the replacement and walk away still wanting more. All that being said, seems to me that G Huges is a fan favorite. That's what I've seen most frequently recommended in bariatric circles. -
Congratulations on your loss. I haven’t yet shopped from the bariatric pal store. I do buy low calorie snacks from the grocery store that are empty calories though and have them on occasion. It’s obviously better if you can find ones you like with protein added so it actually fills you up. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Tek I didn’t explain myself well. The nutritionist said to aim for 60-80g protein and no more than 600 kcals.. but has said nothing about sodium, fat etc. So I was wondering if there’s a calculator out there that is for bariatric patients telling us those levels to aim for? I am a small frame female, so taking 600 kcals is like 1/3 of the recommended for a healthy woman (more or less), however, due to the bariatric surgery and poor absorption, I need 60-80g protein at the moment. That is NOT 1/3 of the recommended, so I can’t just divide all the figures for “normal small women” by 3. If there is no calculator, maybe someone has been told by their nutritionist. Mine just shrugged! -
Hi guys! I'm pre op and currently on trt prescribed by endocrinologist with legal stuff bought from pharmacy. Anybody has experience with it and bariatric surgery. I hope testosterone will help me prevent muscle mass loss, before I was fat I've spend decent amount of time in the gym a any my lean mass is slightly above average. Trt was a lifetime decision so I intend to keep it that way. I will obviously consult it with endo and surgeon, but just curious if you have any experience. Have a great day!
