Tips on breaking the sugar addiction

This is the approach that I use: I strictly avoid processed sugars. I have a sweet tooth and that is one of the major causes that contributed to my weight gain over my lifetime. I limit myself to artificial sweeteners (such as Splenda and sugar alcohols), to natural low calorie sweeteners (such as Stevia) and to the natural sugars found in fruits and milk. I had diabetes. That went into remission when I left the hospital two days after surgery and I have not taken any diabetic medicine ever since and my blood sugar levels are good. I test my blood sugar levels periodically. [Currently over 5 years post-op] I read the labels of all food that I consume. I look at the grams of sugar per serving. If it is above 5 grams, I look at the ingredients. The ingredients are listed in order by highest percentage, and if the first 5 ingredients contain processed sugar (in any of its many forms), then I avoid this food, like a plague. I also restrict myself to about one meal per day containing complex carbohydrates (such as pasta and bread). I also avoid all carbonated beverages. I lost 20 pounds pre-op solely on eliminating carbonated beverages from my diet and I will not go back.

    Hardest Part (outside of eating)

The mental aspect of all of this is the hardest for me. I didn't expect that at all. Learning how to cope with stress without food or alcohol has been hard too. And stalls! The scale makes me crazy but I can't stay away from it!

    vitamins

Bariatric-branded vitamins are not necessary or better. Taking 2 Multivitamins a day from Centrum or One A Day, or their generics (from Costco, Walgreens, etc) are fine. Try to find a multi that does NOT contain both calcium and iron as taking them together impedes absorption of both, so then it is as if you didn’t take them at all. I take One A Day 50+ as it doesn’t contain iron and then I dose my heme iron separately (2-4 hours apart) from my multi and calcium citrate supplementation. My thyroid medication is also impacted if I take iron and calcium with it , so I don’t; instead, I take thyroid RXs first thing in the morning and vitamins at lunch, dinner, and bedtime. Works out great, which has been verified with excellent lab work results. If you find your vitamins are too big, you can use a pill cutter to make them smaller. However, I didn’t need to do this myself. The only modification I did in early post-op days was to take vitamins one at a time instead of as a handful of pills. As well, don’t stress out about taking or not taking vitamins in the first month as you have plenty of them stored up in your body and won’t go deficient right away. Ease into your new vitamin regimen if that works better for you. i found chewable and dissolving vitamins made me nauseous or caused me to vomit after bariatric surgery. I think this is because they contain sugar alcohols which are no bueno for me now. Lastly, my doctor emphatically said to NOT take Flinstones or children’s vitamins as they don’t contain the right types of vitamins and amounts.

    Hardest Part (outside of eating)

Social situations changed for me when I reframed it as being about people, not food. I'm there to enjoy the conversation and the company. To gain comfort from the relationships. It helps me not obsess about what I can or can't eat or start rationalizing a bad choice. I was on my pre-op diet at a dinner party with some close friends, so I had to not eat anything but my salad and afterwards I went home and cried because it was the first time I simply enjoyed the company of the people in my life and I didn't think constantly about food. It was so amazing and also sad when I realized how much life I missed by thinking always about food. I can't say I'm "healed" but I'm able to catch the food obsession and remind myself it's not about the food. I'm an introvert so social situations can be stressful so sometimes I have to remind myself every few minutes, but it helps. I'm a teacher and not being able to drink alcohol in the summer is a lot harder than I expected. I didn't realize how much I use alcohol to relax over vacation. I haven't found a way to reframe that one. I feel the scale pain: my weight stays in the same two-pound range for weeks and then drops suddenly, then goes back up a couple pounds before starting the whole process again. It's super frustrating, but over the long run the weight loss does happen, eventually. Just not on my brain's schedule.
  5. I have been an avid baker and cook my whole life. This morning I went through my kitchen a gathered all of my baking ingredients and sweets; tons of chocolate chips, sugars, lard, shortening, condensed milk, etc and put it all in a storage bin. I couldn't bring myself to get rid of it so I put it out of sight in the basement. Just now, I threw it all out. It was liberating. I remember years ago I burned my ex's love letters that I had held on to for years, after that I was able to finally move on. It felt good getting rid of that food myself, like an alcoholic clearing out their liquor cabinet on the path to a new start.

Can I have a half glass of Wine with a steak

I am 12 weeks post op and had steak for the first time last night. It went down ok, but not as easy as chicken or fish. I definitely could not eat as much as other foods. I think if the steak has been more tender, it would have definitely helped. As for alcohol, I doubt a small glass of wine will hurt you. I’ve had a couple of small drinks by the pool this summer. I just stick with one small one, and I am just fine. We are heading to the beach in three weeks so I wanted to experiment with alcohol before I went, lol.

    One Week Cigarette Free!

I quit 6 years ago. I decided to throw everything at it. So I went on Chantix to help with the physical addiction; Wellbutrin to help with the mental part; for the first couple weeks, I used an e-cig when I really had a craving; gum; mints; not drinking alcohol; etc. Good luck!
  9. I'm going to approach this slightly different & give myself advice I wish I had: Don't start drinking alcohol again.
  10. I don’t smoke (14 years smoke free), I don’t drink alcohol, I don’t use drugs, I don’t drink caffeine or any soda except carbonated water (no chemicals like artificial sweeteners) but I am 405 pounds and miserable. Been in therapy for years and she supports this surgery. Maybe I’m just really paying more attention to it since surgery is just 3 months around the corner. I definitely need to start the walking. Do people use timers to motivate? I always want to start something and then fail.

    One Week Cigarette Free!

You will get there! This is legit the first time I ever seriously quit (& hopefully the last, too!) I’m 34 and I smoked for nearly 20 years. 😳😳. What was crazy is I dreaded quitting for years... and then I did it and after 3 days it got much easier. Beware of the terrible threes. The hardest times for me were 3 days, the third week, and the third month! Also, stay clear of alcohol. Alcohol makes you want to smoke and impairs your decision making to weaken your resolve. I used a mix of Wellbutrin and the Juul e-cig to quit. However, having to then quit nicotine in the electronic cigarette was another addiction I had to break- so it may be worth your while to vape nicotine free juice if you go that route. Good luck and you got this! I tell myself I’m not going to let cigarettes or nicotine be the reason why this doesn’t happen, because that would be a lame reason. If I legit do not want to go through with it that’s one thing, but letting cigarettes control my life? No way! Best wishes to you!

Can I have a half glass of Wine with a steak

I was told to wait until 3 months post op before introducing alcohol.... some programs have you wait as long as 6 months. Follow your plan.
  16. I had my sleeve a week before you. Since being allowed solid foods 2 weeks ago I have tried chicken, fish, shrimp, and deli ham. It will be a while before I try red meat since so many have issues with it. I am not a wine drinker but I have tried alcohol (Crown Royal/water and tequila) on a few occasions with no negative effects. I personally would not go to a restaurant and try a couple of new things for the first time since surgery because I would be humiliated getting sick in a restaurant but that is just me. Proceed with caution would be my advice.

Can I have a half glass of Wine with a steak

Well then I sit corrected. Alcohol is a depressant that acts similarly to a barbiturate in the fact that it suppresses the central nervous system. And it is famous for lowering inhibitions. Now I am not saying this patient will be dancing on tables with a lamp shade on their head, but the loss of sensation in the stomach inherent post op coupled with the relaxed inhibition could make it more likely to over eat. I had not heard of people being prescribed blood thinners post op. That sounds odd to me. However, if someone is on a blood thinner, then I would imagine that any alcohol while on said thinners would be yet another reason not to drink alcohol. Dramatic or not, it makes no difference to me if someone wants to drink a glass of wine and eat steak 7 weeks post op. I merely suggested they ask their surgeon instead of asking people on the internet.

Can I have a half glass of Wine with a steak

My surgeon said no alcohol for 6 months. There's a 4th of July party, I really want a glass of wine, I'm 3 months out then, I'm toying with it but I'll probably behave. I was warned by other veteran WLS people that IF you decide to drink in public, try one at home first, you never know how it will effect you.

Can I have a half glass of Wine with a steak

Alcohol is not a barbiturate. As for blood thinning, considering we get blood thinners post surgery, and blood thinners are not an uncommon medication, this seems a bit over dramatic considering we are talking about a 1/2 a glass of wine.

Can I have a half glass of Wine with a steak

Best to consult your team when it comes to timing of alcohol and moving forward on your plan but either way at seven weeks post op you are going to nurse the drink or meal heavily as both may be surprisingly unpredictable to tolerate now. Enjoy!

    July Sleeve

Hi Dee, July 17 will be here for us fast. My pre-op is 6/28, then begin pre-op food plan July 7. I quit caffeine 3 days ago and it seems hardly worth it to make coffee anymore - so bland without the kick! But it's fun to play in the kitchen and try various concoctions of protein shakes, etc. Gave up on soda last January and quit alcohol last month. "It's just temporary," I tell myself!

Anyone 5' 1"? Low starting bmi? Care to share?

But I think everyone does it. No one really understands how extreme the surgery is until they see it up close and personal. My husband's grandmother invited us to dinner, so I chose olive garden because I figured there could be some healthy options there. First thing that happened was, we opted for lemon water, no alcohol. She was already guilt tripping over that because she wanted wine. Then we got an appetizer. I had one stuffed mushroom. And picked a couple of toppings off the salad. She's asking if I'm going to eat anything and I'm like if I eat anymore I'm not going to eat anything out of my meal. [emoji58] But I chose the salmon piccata and it was a really good choice, I managed to get a good chunk down including the broccoli and it was light in calories, and even with the sauce my stomach took it well. And by a good chunk I mean maybe an ounce and a half or something. Lol but I mean, we just can't worry about what everyone else is saying or thinking right? 25. MO-Lee's Summit we have yet another thing in common. My grandmother Are Blanche Priest Week let was cut from the same bolt of cloth as Diantha, raised 11 of her 12 babies with infrequent help, from Grandpa Charlie an alcoholic farmer. She never grayed either but with the hardscabble existence she,led she should have been white haired or tore it all out. I liked her, a little rough to some but she had a lot,of love for me. She had oodles of grandbabies, maybe40-45 I never did total up how, many. My parents were 32 and almost 30 when i was born, my daddy was midway in Ada's children, so I have 1st cousins with children as Old or older than me. I was fearful you would take the darkness as me meaning there was a hole, void in your soul from your childhood sorrows and the sins commuted against you. OMG I thought you have lost your new friend already. I too have dark places to me, not quite the same but many facets similar, many blows to my spirit and yes scars that had to heal but, you know I have. Grandma Ada and my other Grandma Cora's spirit, not easy lives for either but they were strong women who survived and I will continue, surviving, also. Grandma Cora was the first woman voter registered in this county . When women received the vote, she told Grandpa Hugh, hitch up the horses , we are going to town , I want to register to vote. And she was the firstf in line on that important day. Before that time only women who could vote were in Wyoming . Glad Ohio and the remaining states saw the light. And I don't think I have missed a time since in was old enough.
