6 months pre op diet Fail

Do not get discouraged I️ maintained my weight for most of my weigh ins but at my 5th month I️ gained 5 lbs.... I️ was freaking out but the surgeon said not to stress because she uses the initial weight to gain insurance approval and my BMI was 40.69 at that time. She did inform me that because she is submitting my initial weight I’ll still need to lose 5% of that weight prior to my surgery day. I️ would say just double check with your insurance company to ensure they don’t have a NO-Weight gain clause in your policy to obtain approval. Best of luck
  4. So beautifully said. Perfectly said. It’s a part of weight loss that isn’t much talked about and integral to losing the fear of regain. I have mirrored your journey. But I have also decided to completely move beyond valuing myself based on a number. I found that in order to be truly happy I had to accept that all “me” was a valid loveable person. The bigger me, the me now. My worth isn’t determined by my weight. This allowed me to let go of the fear of regain and also let go of any dieting behavior. I now eat freely and intuitively and it’s been such a wonderful transition. I’ve embraced my body weighing whatever it needs to to be healthy. That’s when I was really able to find happiness. My weight gain came about from self hatred and shame, feeling like a failure for not being model thin. If I kept holding myself to that standard I would have put myself right back where i started. Thank you for your post, it’s a really important thing to talk about.

Progress Pic from Halloween Share yours?

Mine is a little different. I’ve actually put weight on in the last year, I think about 10 lbs? Not sure but I’ve gained weight because I’ve eaten more and the weight gain has really improved my appearance and health. I didn’t try to gain weight by stuffing myself or anything I just have allowed my body to weight whatever it wants to. I stoped trying to control it.
  6. Perhaps you need to weigh yourself less frequently if a 2.5 pound gain induces that much anxiety. You cannot expect to lose consistently each and every single week. Glycogenation is the prevailing reason for weight gain when you work out and eat minimal calories. Working out enhances our muscles' energy storage capacity. Active people need more fuel, so active bodies adapt by increasing the capacity to store glycogen, leading to temporary fluid gain. So you lose fat, but the progress you make is masked by water weight gain. You may have lost 2 pounds of fat the past week but gained a few pounds of glycogen or fluid in that time. In sum, stay off the scale and allow your body to work through the changes it's experiencing. Measure your progress by the looseness of your clothing, not by some arbitrary scale number.
  7. Our weight fluctuates from day to day depending on the time of day, time of the month etc. As long as you're doing everything right stay focused and don't worry about the scale that will all work itself out. I weighed myself weekly and I did this consistently for 14 months. I noticed one week I'd have a 1-2 lb loss another week .2 lb loss another week I'd be up 1.5 lbs then one week I'd lose 3.2 lbs. Watch your sodium intake as water follows salt. Make sure you're drinking enough water, and make sure you are also measuring yourself. If you're working out consistently 5 days a week, then I wouldn't be surprised if that weight gain is muscle but maybe you've lost a few inches instead. Let the scale be your guide to help you stay on track with your goals but dont' let it ruin your day. We've all been there. Keep up the good work!
  8. I’m doing everything right. I’ve not changed the way I️ve eaten (surgery 9/14) I️ mean the last month I’ve eaten and drank the same. Worked out 5x a week. I’ve been SLOWLY losing but this week I’ve gained 2.5 pounds?! I️ thought I️ was just stalked but no! It’s going backwards!!!! I️ want to cry. If I️ knew what to do different I️ would but I’m not messing up anywhere...[emoji17]

    Weight loss already.

I'm one of the lucky ones too. I never saw any weight gain after surgery. It's just stead losses each day. Whether it's a few ounces to a pound or more. I'm 8 days post op and down 7.5 pounds from the morning of surgery. I'm bad because I weigh like 3 times a day. I'm trying to tell myself to stop and only weigh in once every week or even bi-weekly. 10. Success 2-3 yrs post op?

Thanks @jenn1 So as most say it is a long time battle with managing the foods you eat and the weight gain. I guess it a big jump start and most keep most of their weight off but it's not easy. I guess they have so much vested probably or have better tools to cope with urges. I mean realistically I never really hungry now but love to eat and crave sweets big time. I'm just trying to wrap my brain around how I will be successful long term when I have lost my weight (70lbs) before but have not been able to keep it off. I appreciate your detailed input and congrats on success!!
  12. I just researched some of the medicine I am still on and the say they cause weight gain. I am 3 weeks post op and now scared to death these meds are going to slow me down in my weight loss journey. My goal is to be off all my meds as the weight comes off but until then is it sabotaging my weight loss? Does anyone else have this concern?

    Birth control

Just curious to know if anyone continued to use birth control pills after their surgery and how effective was it? I am seeing mix reviews with weight gain & weight loss however I tried to get the IUD 2 days ago & it was no success(no kids so extremely painful) I am not concerned about the kids part I just have bad uterine polyps that occur so birth control helps but as stated before I’ve read that the pills may not be that effective... just wondering about birth control options anyone may have found.

I ate a small portion about every 3 hours yesterday!!! Feeling it today yuck!! Will not do that ever again. Also have a additional 1.4 lb weight gain today! No thanks getting back to more protein than carbs now!

    PCP discouragement

This is INFURIATING to me! The first endocrinologist I was referred to in my new insurance network upon moving to OR last year told me that "if I can't lose the weight on my own, surgery won't help." This is a man who deals with obese people with diabetes all day long...and he knows damn well that insulin and other drugs make it even harder to lose weight. For him to tell me that my problems are because of will power makes me sick. When I was a fat four year old, what was the problem then? What was my personality flaw then, Mr Biased!?? Then, then! I go for my annual pap and the guy wants to give me a hysterectomy because I have a soggy uterus from adenomyosis - no pain, nothing, he just wants to cut but is worried about how fat I am. He tells me I'm so obese that I have to worry about cancer at this point. I mention having the bypass and he literally guffawed. He said that "there's no such thing as magic." I wanted to punch him in the face. Did I say it was magic? No. Did I say I wasn't willing to remove my uterus on his nine second whim even though the last time I saw him, he said he wouldn't do any testing on me to insure a HPV stage 1 cancer scare hadn't reared its ugly head again after a lot of weight gain in a recent pregnancy? - - he said even though the LEEP procedure I had to get rid of it was 10 years ago, I'd be "silly" to think I'd actually be the 1 in 15 million who would test positive again (even though his statistic was for over a five year period). AAARGH. You know, there was a time in this country where doctors deserved to be revered - or heck, maybe we were all just blind sheep without the power of the internet and they never deserved it - but I tell you what. You sound like you care WAAAAAY too much about what this doctor thinks. The only people you should be discussing weight loss surgery options with is a weight loss center of excellence staff member and/or surgeon. If you want positive encouragement (or honest feedback), go to a support group. But to allow people who don't support your endeavor to get healthy rock your confidence to the point of seeking advice on a website for it....? This doctor needs to be cut from your life. She had the nurse call? Are you sure you have a great relationship? We cannot have it both ways. We cannot change without changing everything, including the people we surround ourselves with who can't support us (and who are usually in relationships with us because we're obese to some degree because it makes them feel better about their own insecurities), and then be surprised or concerned and get upset when these people who keep us - fat, self doubting, depressed, confused - reveal their biases. When I found another endo, by the way, she said gastric bypass is the closest thing in the world to a cure for diabetes and that she was utterly floored by the PA who spoke to me so unprofessionally. She was so angry, she is taking action in her own office and is going to be a stronger advocate for her patients on this issue. Progress somewhere is better than haters who have no specialization or true knowledge of the surgery/process/outcomes/etc. I don't mean to sound insensitive to YOU or cynical, but I have just HAD it, especially with male doctors, who feel it's their right to put me down no matter what I do.

    Banders #7

I'm still here!! I'm struggling with weight gain and am not at all happy about it. I'm stress eating and also finding it hard to watch my intake especially as Corey is all about the food. I'm not blaming him....this is my responsibility to be accountable for my food choices but I am indeed having a hard time at the moment. The good news is that I am happy as can be in my relationship and am looking forward to co-habitating sometime next year hopefully. Work sucks and that is the cause of much of my stress but I am looking at the big picture which for me is three more years in the workforce and then early retirement. Couldn't come fast enough for me...lol.
  17. Sure...its the overeating her sleeve which I'm concerned about. LOL. I just am trying to figure out for my personal situation, the degree that I will have to go to keep me from overeating my pouch. But I also suspect rich foods, food obsession, and alcohol played a contributing roll in Carnie's regain. I know weight gain with kids is a real issue and that it is doubly hard to lose it afterward...but I somehow think the first part of this is more in play? @BDMEPretty much, our food requirements/limits are the same. Slightly smaller for pouch v. sleeve but it's essentially a similar journey. My vitamin requirements are set in stone and different from a VSG, though!

    Is there anything??

I'm not sure what specifics are going on in your situation. Are you pre - op? How far out from surgery are you? Are you having a stall or weight gain? Pre op. Not so sure you can do anything to make your stomach smaller. If this is a stall. Look up breaking the stall on this site. Stalls are normal. If you feel your stomach may be stretched, contact your surgeon's office. Many arguments out there about the ability of stretching your surgery . I won't touch on that. Clean you out? I've heard of people doing a diet cleanse to start over a diet. Look into it if you feel it will be beneficial to you. It's normal to be able to eat more as you get further out from surgery. The restriction is still there. It's just different. Kind of a reboot is going back through a liquid or soft food stage for a week... Helps to notice the volume you are able to hold and where you feel restriction at this point of your surgery. Go back to bariatric basics to continue weight loss I still log my food. I eat high protein andI add as much veggies as I want. It helps me to feel full. It keeps my calories down and my weight loss is back on track. Hope you are doing well, Jenn
  19. Something to be aware of. Reality is with any bariatric procedure, you will gain weight by eating "around your surgery" It's easy to eat several small meals throughout your day/night with no effect on feeling restriction pain. Grazing food will/can increase caloric intake and cause significant weight gain.
  20. On April 5 this year I had my rny. A year ago I was told that I was looking at losing 20-30 years of my life because of my insulin need and weight gain. I wasn’t even 30 yet. Now I’m 10 lbs from goal and scared to loss that much because I am just so happy were I am now. I went from a size 18 to a size 4/6 on bottom and a 2-3x on top to a small. I’ve never been this tiny and looking in the mirror is hard some days because I don’t know who I see. But overall I am so much happier. I’ve been off insulin since less than a week after surgery. My asthma is better. And generally my moods have been so much more stable. I am learning to deal with emotions and not eat them (I’ve tried and the physical pain isn’t worth it). And now I am just trying to see how to do these last few pounds till goal without freaking out! Workouts are in my future but for maintenance and maybe I’ll build some muscles [emoji123]. But being so small feels weird. I don’t know what to do with that feeling yet but at least I know it’s there! Anyone else struggle with this? Hw-255 Sw- 235 Cw- 155

    Inflammation from sinus drainage.

Well, I ended up in the ER. The surgeon on call did not want to touch it, and neither did the ER doc. The following day, a surgeon was able to access my tricky port after about 20 sticks. Looks like the port has flipped some and will have to be replaced. Also, it may be that the band has formed a capsule around it, causing it to be tight. Now I have no restriction and have no sense of fullness. Ugh..This thing is coming out! Going to look into converting to the sleeve, as this yo-yo weight gain/loss is killing me!

Almost a year out and scared...

There are two phases to weight loss surgery - the Weight Loss Phase and the Maintenance phase. The strategies for each phase is different. This is the approach I used in the Maintenance phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf It is common to have some limited weight gain after gastric bypass surgery. They call it a 20 pound bounce. The important thing is not let go beyond it. According to my nutritionist, meals (at one year post op and beyond) should consist of equal parts of protein, fats and carbs after the first couple years post-op. Snacks should be limited to primarily whole food options: nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouches. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible. Before surgery, I had constant hunger. When I was eating a meal, my mind was thinking what I would have for my next meal. It was incessant. Now the interesting thing that occurred after my RNY surgery was that I completely lost my hunger. It was not difficult to plan my minuscule meals because I wasn't really hungry. This condition does not last forever but for about a year and then the hunger returns. It just isn't as strong as before. I also had a sweet tooth before surgery. Chocolate by itself isn't the primary problem but the sugar is. During the winter I normally drink a cup of hot cocoa. But it must be the No Sugar Added variety. Also Adkins makes a number of chocolate treats that contain artifical sweeteners that might satisfy your sweet tooth.

I've been on Cymbalta for years. I have tried 3 times to get off of it - - just can't. I works great for my pain. I didn't really have weight gain from it. I did from other meds and issues (broken leg, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, essential tremor disease and on and on)
