My surgery is in Tuesday. There are quite a few women who have been very successful at my old job (on COBRA) so I'm still covered. My sister had the sleeve not too long ago and from what my mom says she doesn't sound like she has lost weight and may need surgery for scarring. She's been having issues with it. She lives in the Middle East. My doctor does less lap band now than the other procedures but is well known for all of these surgeries, so I'm not worried about that. He still is going to do the lap band for me, he says less are asking for the lap band. Just getting nervous about the negative things I see out there about complications. Oh and my mom had a gastric bypass years ago and now has osteoporosis since she doesn't absorb Calcium. I've got a small area of osteopenia of my lower spine which I'm taking calcium supplements and picked up upper body weights. I broke my knee 3 years ago and had to stop Impact exercise which stimulates bone growth. I swim, ride my bike a few miles and go to the gym. I just need not to be hungry. I've been eating less theses past few months also. Anyway. Just nervous. I'll do anything not to throw up that's the worst thing in the world for me. I know I can follow the instructions on how to eat what to eat and exercise. I'm a RN also.

Curious you why didn't revise in the same surgery?

The rny is the full gastric bypass. Roux en y, I think it's spelled. My doc wanted me to do the sleeve or bypass but I wanted to least invasive so picked Lapband. Also felt better that it can be removed. And if Lapband for some reason wasn't effective, my insurance would let me go for the sleeve or rny in 2 years anyway

the choice between life or death or vanity, help me decide.
KellyLessBelly replied to aliensoul77's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am so sorry that you lost your mom at such a young age. I can't imagine how painful that loss was to go through. I too have people in my life who don't seem to grasp what living a day in my body is really like. The first doctor I ever had the nerve to ask about gastric bypass told me that they don't do the surgery for "vanity" reasons. That was around eight years ago and how I wish I hadn't settled for that answer! My health has only declined in that time & now I have no problem getting a doctor to suggest surgery. What an accomplishment, huh? Time on this earth is limited and I want to live and give all that I can. There are so many things I can't do with the limitations of this body. I have a family who deserve a healthier wife, mother, daughter, sister, etc. I have so much to live for and obesity is not on my side. Decision made. Step aside fear, this girl is moving forward! -
Hi! Im still waiting on my approval but I have another question. I know I need breast reduction surgery also. Has anyone have heard of them doing that at the same time as the gastric bypass or do they make u wait til goal weight? Sent from my SM-N920R6 using BariatricPal mobile app

Welcome Megan. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Your insights into the gastric bypass are invaluable. I think we are lucky to have you and Wendy come here and be willing to share your realities with us, since they are so different from our own, being banded and all. I don't kow how long you've been lurking here, but just so you know, we are an international board, with several very active members from the UK, AZ as well as other points inbetween!

Not another stall question!
Mommyof4boys replied to wittyusername's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my bypass Nov 7th and I have hit a stall. It's so depressing because I'm doing all the same things I did at the beginning and nothing is happening I have heard this happens to everyone but I truly hope it passes soon! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I choose the sleeve for three reasons: 1. My surgeon okayed drinking alcohol (down the road) with the sleeve and recommend lifelong abstinence with bypass. 2. My surgeon said the same about NSAID'S. I have quite a bit of arthritis and even down 80 lbs, I still need my ibuprofen. 3. I like the idea of just cutting off some of my stomach as opposed to all the plumbing rerouting and the whole dead stomach thing. I'm not sure about the whole hunger thing. If I avoid simple carbs, I'm not hungry, but if I eat them, I still want more (I'm in month 4).

@@mckwestla I think it is a personal decision and each of us has our own reasons for our selection. For me it was the fact that long term data about the sleeve is showing almost as good total weight loss as the bypass, using a simpler procedure with less risk and less side effects (malabsorption, dumping syndrome, etc.) I also consulted with my surgeon and based on my weight, health and reasons behind my weight gain he agreed that the sleeve was the best option. If you haven't already, a good conversation with your surgeon should help you decide. I would ask about the residual effects of both procedures. For example, the sleeve removes about 75-80% of the stomach, including the fundus which is where ghrelin (hunger hormone) is generated. Thus, sleevers have relatively little actual hunger. The bypass does resect the stomach but leaves the old stomach, including most of the fundus in place. I think it would be worthwhile to know whether the same ghrelin reduction occurs in the bypass. Also, I've heard that the sleeve has, over time, less risk of stretching than the bypass pouch. I don't know this to be the case, just have heard it and it is worth asking about. Hopefully the surgeon you select can help you choose the best procedure for your needs.

Just thought I'd share this so hopefully I can help others avoid complications. (Sorry for the graphics) Last Thursday I noticed a weird sensation vaginally as I used the restroom. When I proceeded to investigate I discovered my Mirena, was not were it should be it had fallen out of my uterus. So immediately I contacted my OB who says due to the fact that we have no idea when it moved, there is a large chance that I could be pregnant and not only that but I have lost 100lbs since my 11-13-12 surgery which would mean that birth-control might not work as well. Now if I would have had normal GB I don't think I would be as concerned as I am. But because I have had so many complications I am very worried. So for all you women who have mirena please be cautious I was I went a month ago to make sure it had not moved and I was assured it wasn't going anywhere. So if you feel something's off go with your instincts. P.s if any one can suggest a birth control we can absorb well please let me know THANK'S!!!

When I started my process I originally was going to do Lap Band. I want as minimum done to my body as possible as far as surgery goes. After my consultation with the surgeon, he said he basically stopped doing the band and recommended the sleeve or bypass. I ultimately decided sleeve because I figured I would rather lose part of my stomach than rearrange everything. It has been good to me. It will be a year on January 31st. I have lost about 150lbs and started out at 323lbs. It all really depends on what you end up preferring. I haven't had any issues so far since the surgery.

Is GERD worse in the beginning months after surgery?
new nrshere replied to lindseylovesdogs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need to maybe have medications changed out for GERD and If that MD not wanting to help with Sleeve or Bypass get somebody’s else., For me Cov19 hit and nothing was open or working and before that I was having major issues with GERD and Sleeve issues and Never Again Use Service with Beverly Hills Physical Group in Los Angeles for Sleeve or Bypass or Plastic Surgery never again very bad place., things got Delayed and I find New Team of MD who know their business and Care., you have to get another team of MD and Education your self and drink water by slip and eat slow and get help asap., -
sometimes all the fluid is removed for a time and the band will go back into place it's self, if not surgery is required - if the band is slipped badly then it will have to be removed, replaced or you opt to have a revision to a diffent type of WLS.

Considering ps - when is the right time
Dr.JLo replied to Goldie's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
There is a lot of planning needed for PS, so I advise an early consultation to get the facts and begin looking for the best PS. Its easy to get tied to the scale as a measure of how "successful" you are, but the scale is only a part of the story. A stable weight, where your diet and excercise mesh comfirtable wiht your lifestyle is far superior than starvation to satisfy some number on the scale. I have seen patients (often bypass or DS) thin to the point of Protein malnutririon who will not heal properly from their PS and so I need to get them built up for a safe procedure. -
Covid Post Op and Weight Loss Stalled
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to Soon2bFit21's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m 16 months post revision for GERD and 2years out from VSG. First symptoms 9 days ago, tested positive on the 20th. Even while moving less and eating more calories I’ve managed to somehow lose weight. Symptoms include- extreme fatigue, sinus congestion, migraine, dry cough, diarrhea, and some body aches. Edited to add- you’re right on track for a stall as well being almost 6months out. That might be part of it along with the inflammation that Covid causes. -
Introduction (New Member)
kimmy*custis replied to MrsAdams84's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
And yes, weight loss is quicker with the sleeve over the band. When I went in my doc says I am losing like a bypass patient, guess they lose a bit quicker than sleeves she says. Woo hoo! -
Today I am going to see a hypnotherapist. As I wait for a surgery date I am working to get all my ducks in a row. I decided to do some therapy to help me sort out the different kinds of hunger as well as self-image issues, privacy about who I am telling, etc. I went through a long list of providers covered by our insurance and was surprised to see a hypnotherapist listed. I have had hypnotherapy before and love the feeling of bypassing my chattering mind to fully relax. That kind of mindfulness is what I need to bring to my banded life as I will be working hard to make excellent choices and avoid stress eating. Just wondered if any one else has used hypnosis or meditation to help with reinforcement. I'm preparing a list of what I want to address in these sessions: S-L-O-W eating, very slow and mindful. Put down the fork between bites. Look at the food and enjoy the colors, the smells, the plate itself. Listen for hunger sensations and notice fullness. Eat three meals a day, no grazing and snacking. Any thoughts are welcome! Thanks so much.

Questions about Revision to Sleeve
1959JimmyJames replied to txdiva's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My insurance paid for the band to sleeve revision. I saw the bills and they totalled about $30,000. I have a relative that went to mexico, just across the border from SanDiego California, and she paid around $5,000. I know my insurance company didn't pay the full amount because they cut deals with each other. I had an out of pocket max of $2,000 and that's what I had to pay. That was 3 years ago for me and I imagine the prices will keep going up. -
@@rydersmama Awesome weight-loss. Congratulations! I am also 5'5, and reached my surgeon's success goal weight of 162 Ibs yesterday. Well, I want to go lower, as I still look bit overweight. My personal revised goal weight would be 143 Ibs, and my stretch goal would be 132 Ibs. So, I am still plodding along, and hoping that with sticking to my food plan, I will lose more. I have a longer journey to maintenance, but as mentioned in other posts, it is best to lose as much as I can now, before it gets tougher, or re-gain happens. Good luck to you
-
For me blue cross covered either the removal or the revision due to complications. But once removed you would be starting fresh and need to be approved for the procedure.that means going through all the steps. For my revision the only thing I needed to go through was a demonstrated complication. Nothing else mattered. No BMI or weight or comorbidities needed.

I'm new to this too and I'm so glad you asked this question...I bought a multi-vitamin made by opurity that's labeled bypass and sleeve optimized multivitamin, I wonder if I'm gonna need other supplements too. Susan -
