Hi, I'm also a low BMI (31.4). Have tried multiple diets and exercise combo's etc, but nothing sustainable. Now, I have hypertension and borderline diabetes so I think it's worthwhile for me. I suppose you need to ask yourself whether you're doing it just to be slimmer (and why do you want to be slimmer)? or is it health concerns as well. Although, the risk is low from a VSG there are still complications and failures; also the cost...

Medical marijuana card
Krimsonbutterflies replied to Elisa Maria's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to stop partaking, I was honest with my Bariatric Team and I stopped smoking. It's been awhile and I don't have any desire to resume the habit again. I feel better, breathing is great and I'm learning to cope with anxiety in other ways. I want to maximize the opportunity of the sleeve w/o complications of old behaviors. -
For Those who had Robotic Gastric Bypass

Have you had any medical evaluation of your GERD other than just what you are feeling - an upper GI or endoscopy to see whats going on in there to cause it? Self diagnosis is not a good start toward a revision. The VSG has a predisposition toward GERD owing to the stomach volume being cut down much more than the acid production potential along with its high pressure character (much like the RNY is predisposed toward marginal ulcers, dumping and reactive hypoglycemia owing to its specific quirks.) If your GERD is a simple result of the above VSG factors, then revising to a DS won't help the situation; an RNY is the more typical solution. However, if your GERD is caused by a hiatal hernia or a malformed sleeve (strictures and the like) then it is not unreasonable for surgery to correct that particular problem will do the trick; a DS in itself will not do anything for GERD as it will use your existing VSG as a starting point - a re-sleeve may be done at the same time depending upon need. Revising to the DS will help some with losing some regain but mostly will help avoid future regain, but revisions in general are typically only marginally successful in treating regain. I can't speak for your specific insurance, but generally insurance will cover any medically necessary revisions for treating complications.

Life is full of "complications", surgery related or not. After trying to avoid WLS for several years for similar reasons I decided the complications I would face later in life if I continued down the current path are more life threatening than any complications for a WLS procedure. https://vin1959.blogspot.com/

Went from greatest NSV to crushing blow in 1 hour
momof3_angels replied to momof3_angels's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Had my stat CT scan yesterday. They said my results should be sent to my PCP within 2-3 hours. I waited 6 hours and stopprd at the PCP's office and they didnt get the results, so now I have to wait until Monday. I left and was so upset that I cant find out for 3 more days. *sigh* And of course now I cant help but wonder.... were they just too busy to finish the report? Of are the results more complicated and they need more time to review the images? Yes, head games have begun. I woukd have been much better off getting the resukts now, good or bad.. . So my imagination doesnt get carried away. *sigh* Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Drinking with meals
Hop_Scotch replied to berrybariatric1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This may help understand why fluids should be avoided when eating meals.... https://www.tristatebariatrics.org/blog-post/eating-and-drinking-after-weight-loss-surgery I find it easy to not drink for 30minutes after a meal since my ESG, I look at the time I finished eating and don't drink for 30 minutes. I assume this is more complicated in the post op stages with a lot more smaller meals thus eating more regularly. I guess its all in the sipping, carry a water bottle with you, sip away - a lot, stop drinking the required time before a meal and don't pick it up for 30 minutes. It may have been a little different for me, I have been use to sipping a lot and often (for a number of years) as a I have a autoimmune syndrome that results in no or very little salvia production. I know someone who takes very small sips when eating and she is doing fine, she is about six months out, she was given the okay to...but each surgeon seems to have their own guidelines and its best to follow your own surgeon's guidelines. -
Hi, joining the April club! My VSG is on April 6th. I still have my doubts about whether I should go through with it or not, but I just keep reminding myself the small risk of complications is worth a few possible extra years of life. The worst that could happen is I regain the weight. The best that could happen is that it helps me take 'reset' my health and lifestyle.

I was never told no caffeine. It’s very frustrating the difference the surgeons have. In regards to your complications , it happens. I had endless complications for 8 months after surgery. Multiple surgeries, infections, peg tube, PE, bowel rupture. Out of 8 months I was in the hospital 6 months of that. I joked with my surgeon once that anything that could go wrong did go wrong. But now I’m a teaching case. I’m 8 years out, and I hadn’t seen him in 6 years till this past August. I had some issues other specialists couldn’t understand all I had been through so I sought him out. He is now running a bariatric program 5 hours from where he performed my surgery. All his staff knew of me. He knew exactly what I needed and no more problems following his suggestions. These complications can hopefully help others that come after us by teaching these surgeons better ways of doing things. I hope that is the extent of your complications and you can move forward and kick butt in this process. I used to think it wasn’t worth it from what I went through. But now I’m healthy inside and out.

I did cheat on mine. Even had a piece of pizza two days before (my sugar dropped to 52 and it was the first thing i saw in the kitchen because it was my boyfriends supper) Didn't cause any complications. But, still, try not to cheat. The main purpose of the diet is to shrink the liver. So my doctor said that as long as i mostly followed the diet I would be fine. One thing I did learn though from cheating, after being on the liquid diet for 1 1/2 weeks before cheating, solid food made me sick.

Has anyone cheated where it caused complications for surgery? I am new in here and I haven’t received my surgery date yet but I need to start my liquid diet and I’m having a hard time with it.

Coke is a highly additive drug, and then there is the complication of transfer of an addiction. Some people after weight loss surgery transfer a food addiction to alcohol or drugs. As above, hopefully at the very least she can be encouraged to be discuss with her doctor.

February 26th will be the date...
summerset replied to summerset's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Recovery is not as quickly this time. I have trouble sleeping, feel kind of restless but pretty beaten. Had some cramps a few hours ago that lasted half an hour or so. I have to test out what I can eat a few days out and what not. Protein drinks seem ok, the protein pudding might have been too heavy. Will try that again in a few days. I'm still scared of complications. I'll be glad when the first month or so will be over. -
I'm so mad - revision denial
RickM replied to ge0rgette2's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
It sounds like someone in the surgeons office coded things wrong, and they are evaluating it as a weight loss revision rather than as complication revision -
I do love Atlanta also, same here about the commute though. Lol. Ya I don’t drive in Orlando especially with the I4 Ultimate project, the construction is crazy and confusing! I will surely wave as you come through. Winter Park is beautiful, especially down town. We take the Sunrail sometimes to Winter Park when family comes to visit. I never use the site. I call them directly and leave a message and the Dr calls back directly or whom ever you are trying to reach there. The nutritionist actually gives you her person cell to text her with any questions or concerns you have regarding weight or diet. I just saw about the gas. Yes, you will have gas and it is painful, I was only in pain for about 2 days that’s it. They do encourage you to walk, walk and walk. That’s what I did and it really helped. I have had ZERO complications since the surgery. Just now dealing with the hernia complications.

Too much water at once?
Krimsonbutterflies replied to jlb8080's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@Tiredmimi you are very fortunate to be nauseous or anything close to it, I envy you. I'm laying here in the hospital after being sleeved yesterday, March 3rd, 2020 and each mili- sip feels crazy going down. I've only managed to consume 2 ozs. of water since yesterday. I've vomited and sleep, got a dose of morphine late last night. I'm still optimistic about this water consumption. I love water as well, so we can't have a complicated relationship. I need water in my life, even if I add Crystal Light at times. Darn, I hope that's an option still. This little angry banana stomach of mines. -
As usual, every surgeon's recommendation is different and a lot of it will depend on you personally. I was allowed back to gym and lifting weights at my two week appt but I was fairly fit prior to surgery. And had a very easy RNY with no pain or complications. I would definitely defer to your surgeon as every individual is different. But hey in the meantime you can walk your tushy off. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk

Any upcoming March 2020 Sleevers out there??
slowlydoesit replied to Pansypicker's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have just booked for 27th March, absolutely terrified now! I have been reading up for a couple of years but suddenly feel totally overwhelmed and unprepared. Worried about complications post sleeve, heartburn, leaks and not being healthy for my kids. I have 50lb to lose (it used to be more but I have been healthy eating the last few years), just need a more permanent tool to help me stay consistent. I am UK based but travelling to Turkey for surgery. Its all I think about and I go from wanting it doing asap to wanting to cancel! -
I am in my 3 month wait... any Words of Wisdom while I wait
Mello1 replied to AmyNay strong's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is great advice! I was just saying in another thread how I was going between being excited and saying 'what have I gotten myself into'. Attitude is EVERYTHING and I also think if you are doing everything they tell you to do, then that goes a long way toward minimizing complications. I say let's rock this out people! -
What is your experience with lapband surgery?
JewlesA96 replied to imaginegirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had a lap band placed 3 years ago. At the time of surgery I weighed 407 pounds I am currently 295 pounds. Yes the band did work it wasn’t magic. I did have a lot of complications. After the first year all my complications started to happen. I threw up every day for the past 3 years. I was constantly sick and some days couldn’t even hold down water. I am currently 5 days post op from my revision. I had the band removed and had the bypass. During the operation my surgeon said my stomach had begun to grown around the band and was very difficult to remove. Yes the band does work to a certain point but in my opinion if you are going to go threw all the pain of having wls go for something more effective! -
Anyone Have March Surgery Date?😊
Mello1 replied to Lily66's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yup, I was the same way. The surgeon recommended RNY, but left the decision to me for that very reason. My reflux has been bad and was getting worse and when I read that the sleeve may aggravate the problem, it was then a no brainer for me. Hey, is anyone else oscillating between being very excited to 'what the heck am I doing'? That's why I love coming on this site at times, although when I read about some other's complications, I get nervous again... -
I am in my 3 month wait... any Words of Wisdom while I wait
BadWolfGirl replied to AmyNay strong's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The best piece of advice I can give is to go in positive. Don't assume you'll have complications. Yes we hear from the people who have issues and are in pain, tired, etc. But that's because they're feeling bad and want help and support. What we tend not to see is the other 98% of us where everything went off without a hitch. I walked and walked and drank a ton of fluids and was home from RNY within one day and in no pain within 4-5 days. At 5 weeks out I am jogging, light weight training, and basically back to or better than normal. Go in thinking you're going to rock this and nothing is going to stop you and you're going to walk and sip fluids and kick the surgery's ass. And do it. Move. Drink. Repeat. Also, hydrate like a camel the day before surgery. Literally like a gallon or more. My surgeon swears by this because people who go on hydrated tend to do better. PLEASE HELP the skeptic in me. Doesn't starving = eventual weight gain??
FluffyChix replied to MaybeMeow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
WLS allows for a metabolic reset of your fat storage/energy system. It allows your body chemistry (super complicated) to defend a lower set-point, but google Dr. Matthew Weiner on The YouTube and watch all of his videos and you will learn about it. Unlike what @VIN_IN_AL says, my program (major university) told me no caloric threshold for calories. My real advice (RNY) was to get 60-80g of lean, dense, low fat protein in daily from as many sources as possible for diversification, to eat 1-2 bites of low glycemic veggies, and don't eat much fat--but if I did, to use tiny bits of healthy fat. And to get in 64oz water + daily vitamins. Beyond that, they were fully aware that during WLM (weight loss mode) I averaged between 650-850 calories per day and my sweet spot seemed to be something like 750cals. The doctor and my RD never said a word about it, nor did either encourage me to artificially inflate my calories because of some mythical theoretical mumbo jumbo just to hit some "magic threshold" to prevent "starvation mode" (a myth). I hit first goal at around 8-9months despite having a crapton of metabolic issues and shortcomings including being on a cancer drug that shuts down my hormones and causes weight gain in most people. (See the rest in my signature). I'm now maintaining at 131lbs this morning at 1100 cals average. That means preferentially some days I eat 700-800 cals per day (3 days per week) and some days I eat as much as 1400-1500 cals per day depending on appetite or what I'm doing. Over the week it averages to about 1100 cals. I'm not in starvation. My vitamin status at two years is fabulous and there ya have it. -
I am 1 yr post OP from having my gallbladder removed and the severe sepsis that i endured and almost ended my life all because of the poison that happened from my gallbladder going rouge. My 51 year old brother's wife just died from sepsis! That is serious! If you do not feel well and have pain do not ignore it! I thought it was just a complication from my ByPass surgery but it was so much more. It has taken a year to feel better and I still have a lot of days that I do not feel very good, but much better than when I was admitted to UPMC hospital last year. Thank GOD for UPMC they saved my life twice. Once with my Bariatric operation which cured my kidney disease and then with curing my sepsis.

Had my surgery last Monday and I have regretted it since day one!
BadWolfGirl replied to HLsleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh no! I am so sorry you're feeling so bad. I would definitely call the surgeon and tell him how you're feeling, you probably definitely need fluids. And they can give you medication to manage spasms and nausea. I never had any complications so can't give you personal experience but I do think your surgeon will know best ! I hope you feel better soon! Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
