    Pre op diet weight loss

I am 1 week into my pre-op, I have lost just over 10 lbs. I do about 3 low carb/sugar, High Protein shakes a day. About a half cup of either cottage cheese or scrambled eggs, 64-100 oz. water, and occasionally chicken broth. if I want a snack I have a sugar free ice pop or jello. I also drink a big (32 oz.) coffee every day. I have one more week, I am trying to hit another 10 lost.

    Pre op diet weight loss

Congratulations on your loss and getting a head start on those changes! That will certain help when you get back to a regular diet! I’m on day 3 of my 8 day liquid diet … (3 Protein Shakes a day, 24 oz 100% fruit juice [no sugar added] & a minimum of 64 oz of Water. I can also have unlimited sugar free Jello, popsicles, broth/bouillon or zero electrolyte drinks that count towards my water goal). So far I have had broth every day, it helps cut the sweet of the juice and Protein shakes, but I haven’t felt hungry or the need for more… yet. (The high protein diet is only 7 days, day 8 is all clear liquids - 60 oz of juice, 64 oz or more of water, plus I can have unlimited amounts of broth/boullion, sugar free popcicles, “zero” electrolight drinks, low calories water flavor aids… nothing red though).  As of this morning I have lost 10 pounds on my liquid diet (I have a lot to loose) - which brings me to 62 pounds lost so far since June 2021 (my highest weight).
  3. They put me on a 10 day clear liquid diet. White grape juice, apple juice, cranberry juice, pulp free lemonade, fat-free low sodium broth, coffee, tea, popsicles, gelatin. I lost like 10 lbs. or something like that. It. Was. Miserable. lol

    August surgery buddies!

Day 3 of pre-op diet (5 more to go). I’m down 10 pounds since staring the pre-op diet (62 total since I started trying to loose weight last year). Today was the first time I really “saw” weight loss in myself. My clothing have been looser, but I hadn’t noticed obvious body changes until this morning. It hit me - there’s going to be a lot of skin.. lol. Already getting some “wings”, but honestly I don’t mind it’s a badge of accomplishment at this point. I’ve earned those wings. 🤣 Today is the first day I have felt actual hunger, but I’ve been more active today than the last two days and it wasn’t bad, the protein shake helped. I also was around food and ok… but I have to stay off FB and avoid ads…. Those pictures kill me!! My plan is to get all my requirements in (shakes, juice, water) and if I feel like I need something more I’ll add in broth, jello… or one of the other allowed “free foods” to tide me over. I’m hoping I can drop at least another 11 or 12 lbs before Tuesday. That would put me in a really good position to get under the 300 lb mark before the end of the month and I have seen the scale point to anything in the 200’s in a looong time. I’m almost as excited to hit that number as I am to get to onederland! Lol. Now that will be a celebration!!

    Pre op diet weight loss

I lost about 19 pounds on the pre-op diet. I did it for a little longer than I had to because I was so eager to lose.

    Life after 168 pounds down.....

OMg that is one thing i am looking forward to is the plane seats. So before surgery i would always fly first class because coach seats are so small and i could not fit in them. and first class is so expensive so its going to be nice to be able to pay a few hundred dollars for a plane ticket vs thousands. A month or so after surgery i applied for a 2nd job a job where i would be standing for 8-10 hours a day. before surgery i could not stand for more than a few minutes or walk more than a few minutes without being exhausted and in pain. Now i stand 10 hours a day without issue at all.
  7. I am pre op and will be starting my pre op diet officially in September. (3 weeks with 50 carb limit a day) Just curious about how much, if any, people lost during their pre op diet - and what their plan entailed…. (As of today 8/10/222, i have already lost 61 lbs from my highest weight last year just through changing my lifestyle and dealing with my binging and emotional eating - am excited for every ounce lost that gains my ability to actually live life)

    June 2022 surgery buddies

My bypass was 6/8/22. Here’s a quick update. I went into surgery at 208 lbs. I had started the liquid pre-op at 222. I came home from surgery on 6/10 at 223… IV FLUIDS from the hospital caused that. On 6/30, I weighed 192. It was my 3 wk visit with the surgeon. We talked about stalls and not weighing every day. Today is 8/10, 2 months 2 days post op and I weigh 178. Historically I am a slow loser, so I’m over the moon at how this is going. I’m averaging about 1/2 lb loss a day. I found meeting my hydration and protein goals challenging and I had to focus to meet them. It took me a few weeks, possibly 5 weeks even. I made sure I made hydration goals first and then I focused on protein. I found that large amounts of anything with artificial sweeteners (crystal light, etc) stalled my weight loss. Except for 2 s/f ice pops per day, I steer clear of artificial sweeteners. I stopped drinking protein shakes when I made the connection between stalls and artificial sweeteners. I put PRO-T (17 G protein) in a bottle of water a few times a day to meet my protein goals. I buy it on Amazon and I used it after cosmetic surgery a few years ago with great results. I was slow (intentionally) to progress through food stages by choice. I have not been hungry, I have to remind myself to eat (I’m thrilled), and I eat what I feel like eating if it’s something allowed I go through phases: cucumbers, hummus, soup, zucchini, pickles, egg salad, tuna, peanut butter. A couple of bites and I’m full. I walk 3 miles a day, 4-5 times a week. I take vitamins my surgeon has prescribed. I am always drinking water. I have one cup of coffee a day and have essentially lost my love of it. UNPLEASANT: I’ve had 3 vomiting episodes. All my fault because I ate too fast. They were basically uneventful and I was immediately fine. One dumping episode. I didn’t realize buttermilk has sugar in it and I made a dressing for zucchini spirals. I never needed pain meds in the hospital post op probably because I was given a 3 day nerve block in the abdomen by the anesthesiologist. I NEVER had a single gas pain. Ask me any questions: I will try to organize this info and perhaps make it easier to follow. In no particular order, my go-to foods are: ricotta cheese, lettuce with skinny girl dressing, tomatoes, zucchini, chicken-crust pizza (recipe from Sugar Free Mom-Google it-its TDF), many recipes from Bariatric Kitchen on fb. There are SO many recipes…more than I could ever hope to prepare in my lifetime. LOL My attitude has reverted to what it had been most of my life: eat to live. The emotional eating is an issue I have dealt with personally and I dealt with it by removing myself from the kitchen and drinking a bottle of water. When you are sipping, it takes awhile to drink a bottle of water and that’s a good thing. Good luck and feel free to ask me any questions.

    August surgery buddies!

I’m so sorry you got postponed, too! My surgery was supposed to be on 8/8. Talk to your surgery scheduler at your surgeon’s office. They have a lot of experience dealing with denials and approvals with insurance companies. I used to be a surgery scheduler for the doctor I worked for for many years. Sometimes it’s just a records issue (they need) or another test needed to document the medical necessity. My sleeve was initially denied until my sleep study records were sent. (I had horrible sleep apnea.) Now I’m having to jump through the hoops to get my hiatal hernia repair approved and my gastric bypass conversion. I’m not too concerned at this point; just annoyed with having my surgery day postponed. I had an EGD on 7/19 and I’m scheduled for an Upper GI/ barium swallow on 8/15. I’m hoping this test will help get the approval.

    August surgery buddies!

Hey everyone! My surgery was August 4th so I’m 5 days post op today. I’m doing pretty good! I was outpatient at Blossom in Vegas. I was one of the lucky ones with virtually zero pain - just some mild discomfort. I don’t know if that was because I was diligent with walking, having my husband use the massage gun on my back and/or using my massage/vibrating heating pad (has these little parts that go over your shoulders and covers the whole back - feels amazing). While I had no pain I have definitely been nauseas. So bad after taking pills I stopped all of them the night of surgery, but now live with a constant 2/3 out of 10. I’m sure it’ll go away.. just frustrating. I have 2 weeks off work so I’m just taking it easy. Any other surgery buddies? How are you doing??

    July 2022 peeps!

I had RNY July 20th. At my one week checkup I had lost 10 lbs. I weigh myself weekly and the last 2 weeks I haven't lost anything. 0 lbs in 2 weeks. Living off soft foods and have low energy levels for what? I'm starting college on the 29th and was hoping to have lost some weight by then. My mood has been all over the place. I've been crying and am regretting this surgery so badly.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hello, I am new to the community. I had my sleeve on 07/19/2022. The first 2 days were HORRIBLE! However that 3rd day was tolerable. I am now 4 weeks out and I'm struggling with how to put my meals together to get my proteins.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Stalls are the absolute worst. They shake your faith in EVERYTHING! Keep the faith @DaisyAndSunshine if you're sticking to the programme then you might well lose those last few pounds, even if it takes a while. You have done so so very well. I really want to lose about another 10 lbs although I accept that may or may not happen.

Starting my liquid (liver shrinking) diet tomorrow

Thank you! My pre-op weightloss kinda froze for the last two weeks. I am hoping the liquid diet gives me a nudge to loose another 10 pounds or so before the procedure (mine is only 8 days). I figure every pound I loose before is one I don't need to loose after. Best of luck over the next week... I will look forward to seeing your progress and cheering you on!
  16. Hello, I am 6 Months PO, feeling very good today, I had issues with reflux, had a couple of endoscopies and seems like I am fine but for some reason my esophagus is still inflamed, but I feel a lot better now. Hair loss seems to be slowing down, I cut my hair very short because it was awful to see it coming off in the shower, now I can see baby hairs growing but they are very thin. I have lost 83 pounds, I used 2X and 1X size clothes and I still cannot believe I can use jeans size 10. Hungry is back, I cannot eat much at a time but I feel like eating too often, I need a to find way to control that, for now, I put my highest weight pictures in the refrigerator hopping they remind me what happens if I get just one more snack. I have to travel for work and that takes me out of any routine. I have to organize myself better during those weeks. No regrets, I hope everybody else is doing well.

    Alcohol

I drank this weekend for the first time since surgery. I never really drank much before surgery, but maybe a few times a year. I am about 4.5 post-op and it didn't kill me. Or make me sick. I even stayed in my calorie range. I didn't plan on drinking but it was my birthday and I was thrown a surprise Birthday party so I decided to try it out. Worse case, sick at my own party. I was bought a shot of fireball. (My favorite but ALL sugar) I drank and 1/3 of it rather than the entire shot and then waited to see what would happen. Nothing, so I drank another 1/3 waited a few and then the last of the shot. Then.... was I buzzed? I don't even know, I felt buzzed but off of 1/1.5 oz? I know they say it hits you faster but I am still not even sure what it was. It felt different, but still buzzed. Lasted about 10 minutes. LAME..haha So I ended up having a total of 4 shots all night, buzzed for sure at the end of the night but again. It went away FAST. Like 30 minutes later I was sober. I woke up in the middle of the night with a headache, probably dehydrated. Drank a bottle of water with some Tylenol and went back to sleep. Next day, perfectly fine and back to my protein rich days. I doubt I will drink again for awhile. But I enjoyed my Birthday, guilt free without any issues.

    Exercise "tricks"

I've tried to spend time in the gym but no matter what I do or how I do it it's nothing less than torture. After I lost down to 100 pounds to go I decided to challenge myself with a program similar to C25K found in "the Idiot's guide to running." We were already walking 8-10 miles several times a week so I wasn't starting cold. Once I completed the program I started listening to audio books while I ran. I kept increasing time and distance until I decided on a new challenge: running a marathon. I got another book "Marathon Training for Dummies," changed my shoes, and before I knew it I was running 90+ miles a week. And I joined a gym, yuk. This gym had a running track, so my wife could gym and I could run. I did hit the machines on occasion to help my running, and yep, it was torture. Even running on a treadmill, and I did it more than I wanted, took the joy out of running. I started out the day running. It put a nice glow on the day as I felt I had done something good. It allowed me to ponder what I wanted to achieve that day, I got to spend time listening to a book, or actually a series of books. I never got a "runner's high" but I did feel good having done it. I discovered listening to audio books makes any chore better. Even when I have to do brain dead work at the office listening makes it better. My wife listens to music, how weird is that My main trick is not to do anything that feels like torture. It's impossible to maintain something I dislike, be it exercise, diet, work, or relationships. So, find something you enjoy then add audio books to it. Good luck, Tek

    October 2022 surgery support

I am having the bypass on 10-4-22. I am excited and scared all at the same time.
  20. Finally got my surgery date! Will be 10/21. I’m sure my mom will find time to be with me immediately after surgery but come Monday I’m on my own. My surgeon’s office has informed me I may need to be out 4-6 weeks and that they want FMLA papers, which is more time than expected as I was planning to take a week off, I’m only a desk jockey. My mom has missed a lot of work and doesn’t want to miss more, she’s been dealing with her own health issues and her company’s BS. She’s also less than enthused I’m going this route which is why she isn’t fighting harder to be with me I think. What tips do you have for post-op recovery alone? My mom wants a home health nurse to come check on me but I’ll have to see if the surgeon will be willing to write an Rx for it, or will that be necessary?

For a POP and abdomen hurts

only 10 days your stomach is still healing. I wasnt even able to lay down to sleep for at least a month. and any kind of weird movements would be painful. But your stomach will not "pop" you probably pulled a muscle or something. i would call on Monday if you are still worried to your regular doctor.
  22. I am 8 years out from my sleeve and have had GERD since. It has progressively gotten worse. They found a fairly large hiatal hernia. Initially my doc was recommending the bypass conversion but he was concerned it would cause more problems for me since I really don’t have that much more to lose. I had a hernia repair surgery on 7/26 and was told I actually had two! They fixed the hernias, stitched the diaphragm where the esophagus passes, and placed a dissolvable mesh wrap. I am on full liquids until my follow up on 8/10. Overall, I think I did better post op with the sleeve as physically it’s been pretty rough. I was told to quit taking my PPIs and haven’t needed them so I’m hopeful that this will work. He said we can keep the bypass as a last resort but my BMI is down to 26.3 so I don’t think it’s truly an option. I also think if I had known what the past 8 years would be like I may have just opted for bypass from the beginning.
  23. I need to quick smoking as well. My surgery date is 9/28. My surgeon said I needed to be nicotine free 3 weeks before pre surgical testing. My testing is on 8/31, so I need to quit on 8/10. Lots of people will have tips... get suckers or jolly ranchers, write in a journal, knit, anything that keeps you busy and your hands moving. Honestly though, in the past when I quit for significant periods of time I just quit cold turkey. It only sucks bad the first few days to a week. After that, it is all habit and not physical. Hopefully it's easier for you than you think. It's soooo worth it as well.
  24. Hello All, I’m kind of freaking out right now. I am 10 days post gastric sleeve. I was so excited for finally being able to sleep on my side last night, but then in the morning when I tried to turn, I felt a POP on my right side and the pain hasn’t gone away. I needed to hold my abdomen to alleviate the pain and put on my abdominal binder. It does not hurt if I am sitting down, but there are certain movements that hurt like hell. Does anyone have any idea what could it be? My doctor’s office is close and I am not sure if I should go to the ER.

    Reprogramming the swallowing center

I'm 10 months out and sometimes I still catch myself eating just a bit too fast. The first time I did it, I got terribly sick and have been MUCH more mindful since. Its a hard habit to get into, but it is a MUST post-op. Just keep trying. Count chew or sends if you need to. Eventually it will be come second nature and won't feel so weird.
