    Metabolic syndrome

    My endocrinologist actually recommended bariatric surgery in part because of my metabolic syndrome. He said he had many patients have success with surgery in reversing those health issues and getting off those medications. It’s one of several reasons I’m going through the process now.

    Lost about revision

    So I originally had the sleeve in 2018 with a doctor by the name of Dr Steiner in a town about an hour from home. I did well for about 3 years, went from 305lb to 212lb. Not that Im making excuses, but I work in healthcare and COVID took a huge toll on me and my health. I was working long hours and without breaks so I began snacking on anything and everything whenever I could. Of course Ive gained quite a but of weight back as I am now back at 250lb. A new bariatric office opened about 30 minutes from me and I decided to go see them to see what I needed to do about the weight regain, along with the severe GERD that I have developed. The doctor was nice but he just couldn't get anything approved with my insurance. He also did an EGD on me which showed that I had H pylori and he never treated me for it. After that I decided to go back to my original surgeon an hour away from home because they were always so nice and helpful. So Im back with the original doctor now that did my sleeve. He says I definitely need a conversion from sleeve to bypass to help with the GERD and weight regain. It was a no brainer to them. So my advice would be, dont be afraid of getting a second opinion. BUT 9/10 times the original surgeon will know more and do more for you than a new one.
  3. So things were really busy at work, and they brought in lunch. I made myself a bagel with vegetables and brought it back to my desk. I was totally not paying attention when I suddenly realized that restriction hit-- I looked down and saw that I HAD EATEN THE WHOLE BAGEL, leaving over literally two bites!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now yes, I know that I need to be more mindful, pay attention to what's going in. And yes, I was totally annoyed at myself for allowing that to happen. But I have a different, more pressing question! WHY WAS I ABLE TO TOLERATE THE ENTIRE FREAKIN BAGEL??????? Why didn't restriction hit way earlier??? Shouldn't my stomach have protested earlier????? I'd love to hear: Do you prepare the size portion you want to eat based on its size and then go no further? Let's say you aren't full? Do you take more, or try to train yourself to only eat that portion? Does everyone on this forum use the Bariatric Pal portion plates and bowls? I never bought them... and I guess that's why I can eat a bowl of Cheerios 😣 😣 😣 😣 I should be using an itty bitty bowl and telling myself that's all I need, right????? Ok friends. Go ahead. Hit me over the head and give me what I deserve. I think it's time for a thrashing to get me back in place.

    Get a second opinion and a third and a twelfth if you need to. Sometimes we have to really be an advocate for ourselves and fight to get providers to listen and help. Sadly, healthcare is a broken system. You are absolutely NOT stepping on anyone toes. Remember, providers work for YOU. Talk to your PCP and see what they say. If they aren't supportive or can't help, find a different one or go to a different bariatric clinic. You do NOT have to settle for a provider who won't listen or is just throwing pills at you that aren't helping.
  5. Another option is to find a new local bariatric surgeon/specialist. Let them start from the beginning, go over everything and do their own testing.

    I worked with both my PCP and endocrinologist when looking into bariatrics. They were both onboard and worked together for my referral. I agree not to worry about looking like you are doctor shopping and think it’s important to understand why the other dr said no. If it’s something they don’t do - find one who does, if it’s a specific reason it could help when looking for a different practice who might be able to offer a different approach who has experience with whatever that issue is. I went through a different program at first… had my surgery date scheduled and canceled 2 weeks before my surgery because I wasn’t comfortable with the program. They didn’t seem to be listening to me, addressing my concerns - it seemed more like they were only worried about pushing me through their program and checking off the insurance boxes. I was worried about how my leaving that program to find another would look going into a new program - but i was open and honest with them explaining why I didn’t think the other program was a right fit and my situation … they were very supportive and reassuring at the new program every step of the way. Having my PCP and Endocrinologist work with me through this has been really helpful… they were both a sounding board for my concerns with my first program and helpful in getting the ball rolling when selecting a new program to work with.   7. I’m assuming you were already taking bariatric formulations of your vitamins and those didn’t work. Yea the injections seems like a logical solution since they bypass the stomach alltogether. Hopefully your primary doctor can arrange for those.
  8. I agree a naturopath can be a big help. If you don’t have someone near you, can your PCP refer you to a digestive health specialist in your area? Or do you have a different Bariatric or non surgical weight-loss specialist in your area you can call to speak? (My program has the surgical and non surgical weight-loss specialists in the same office. Both are overseen by medical doctors, have nutritionists and nurses). Another option to look into is your health insurance. Some insurance plans offer wellness programs (at no cost) where you can virtually (or by phone) meet with nurses and dietitians that can review your concerns, offer guidance and help connect you with medical professionals in your area that work with your insurance. Sorry you are going through this… I hope you can find answers and feel better soon.
  9. Hey there. I am new here and not sure about posting but I feel like I am all alone. I had surgery 10 years ago, I didn’t ever lose that much weight with it and ended up getting sick and not being able to keep up with my running which I miss more than anything. Anyway, I am 20 lbs over the weight I was before my surgery. I am always so tired and I could sleep anywhere at anytime, although the test said I didn’t have sleep apnea. My BMI is a shameful 45. I wasn’t sure who to contact so I contacted my Bariatric Doctor’s office. I am unable to go to the one that originally did my surgery. I’ve been dealing with a NP (which I really adore) that told me no to a revision, but she’s put me on phentramine and they don’t even give me energy and I never had a problem with over eating I have a problem with forgetting to eat 🙄 All of my pills I have to take now makes me sick, I feel nauseous all of the time, zero energy. I have been checked for depression (of course vitamin levels) I take those even though they make me nauseous. This dr is 3 hours a way we’ve only been able to do telemed visits. I would like another opinion but I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes and get in trouble with dr shopping or have anyone mad. I wasn’t sure if people start out with their PCP or surgeon. sorry I rambled I’m nervous and so confused! Idk where in the world to go from here. Lol thanks for listening to me.

    August surgery buddies!

    So today I learned something pretty interesting that I wanted to share. All of us have a high protein intake that we have to have post-op so I was sure the collagen that I've been adding to my water would count toward that protein intake level. I checked with my nutritionist and she said that collagen is fantastic to take for hair, skin, and nails but it is not a complete protein to count towards my total daily protein intake. So I got to researching and there is a product here on Bariatric Pal for liquid predigested protein. So I sent the link for my nutritionist to review and she came back that since this collagen has tryptophan in it that it completes the protein and can be applied to the daily count.     Getting closer… timeline question

    Congratulations for getting to this stage! I know for me, this period is the hardest to stay patient. lol. I echo what others have said - every program/hospital seems to be different. My last clearance appointment was on June 6. The bariatric coordinator called me a couple weeks later to schedule the surgery. It's been scheduled for July 21,

    Revision Dr in North Florida

    I am not sure if they do revisions. You can call and ask but i had my sleeve done at Baptist Bariatrics Center in downtown Jacksonville, FL.   13. Hello! Anybody on drug regiment not related to bariatric surgery and had any problems with post op? I've read some studies and it seems there shouldn't be much problem with sleeve I have bipolar so taking medication and maintaining dosages is critical for me

    August surgery buddies!

    Hi, I am absolutely doing stuff!! Probably too much! I am keeping my calories at 1400 a day, working out, I just finished a 12 week Bariatric Lifestyle Coach (BariTale Coaching) and just signed up with Bariatric Nutritionist for a 12 week “how to eat successfully after surgery” program (Bariatric food Prep). I bought some new pajamas for the hospital, some glass baby food jars and some tiny fancy espresso cutlery this week. 😂 I’ve lost over 30 lbs already (with help from Lomaira Rx) and was given the “easier” pre-op diet which seems super easy and manageable. Not a liquid diet. I got the time off finally in and approved today at work. Just going to rinse and repeat until surgery day!!!

    Portion sizes

    Don’t worry, a lot of us felt that way some time even with support people about. You’re really learning how to eat all over again in many ways. The other challenge is discovering what works for you. You could do exactly the same as someone else but you struggle simply because you are not exactly the same psychologically or physiologically. Take our ideas & experiences as somewhere to start. Maybe try to find a nutritionalist close by who has experience with bariatric weight loss. Someone on here may even be able to refer someone. Also some bariatric clinics put their plans etc. on line so you could refer to them for additional ideas. Glad you’re giving soup another try. You may find that with other foods too. You easily ate it yesterday but today it’s no way. Then three days later it’s fine again.

    Really this many pills!?

    That may be why you have to take the extra pills. The bariatric vitamins are a bit more expensive but they have a lot of those extras included. Flintstones vitamins are designed for children so they do not have everything an adult needs included. I would print out the ingredients of a couple of the bariatric vitamins and see if you take one of those if you can cut back on the number of pills. I take the pro care health with 45 mg iron and I only have to take one a day plus my calcium.

It’s not really meal prepping in my mind since I can only eat the meat, but I made a little less than a pound of lean ground beef with a taco seasoning packet and I’ve been eating that for the week with fat free shredded cheese. If you are farther out you could do a wrap, taco, veggies, sour cream, etc. Also you might like the muffin tin recipes on Pinterest. You can search bariatric muffin tin recipes and a lot will come up. A lot are made with wonton wrappers and the “guts” can be Italian, Mexican, breakfast, etc. I like taco cups, meatloaf cups, and lasagna cups best

    I was informed my by Bariatric Dr to swim & keeps skin hydrated also warm shower & very cool rinsing & rinsing your hair in very cool water keeps it from falling out a lot also so double bonus.

    Trying to get out of my head....

    I'm pre-op but being scared of food and restricting is part of my disordered eating and need to be in control. For me, it definitely stems from childhood bad habits and childhood traumas. I've made such amazing progress working with my therapist about it, and she doesn't even specialize in eating disorders or bariatric therapy. It was even helpful describing a trigger for it to my pcp, who validated me and made me feel like I wasn't crazy and alone. Like I said, I'm pre-op, and so my strategies may not help someone post-op, but giving myself a distraction and giving myself grace are the biggest helpers. Logging my food was known to make me anxious and things worse, so my therapist suggested that I only track food sometimes, mainly when I feel like I'm gaining, and to just try to trust myself the rest of the time. Obviously you (and me in the future!), have to track certain things but don't let it destroy your mental health. Also, upping the work outs is going to cause some water retention and you'll need to eat more to fuel yourself, unfortunately a vicious cycle that a personal trainer had to explain to me once when I was panicking about weight loss. It also helped that they had a body composition machine and I could see that though my weight wasn't budging, my fat % was lowering and my muscles mass was growing. Definitely look into a place that has one of those, or even a place that does dexa scans! You're doing so great!!!!

    It’s like we share a brain, I swear. I went over 600 calories yesterday and the mental beat down I gave myself was horrible. Even though I burned 400 calories with exercise that same day. 🤦‍♀️ I had the sleeve first in 2017 and truthfully should have been diagnosed with some sort of restrictive eating disorder. I’m trying to be better about it this time with my revision but old habits have emerged. My nutritionist says calories for the day are not important, that I need to only stay around 60g protein, under 35 carb, and under 30 fat amounts. I am trying to get on board with her way of thinking. I personally benefit from a therapist because my issue is with control because of trauma background. Not a Bariatric therapist, just A therapist. Because it’s not about the food. It’s about my control and fear issues. I am practicing intuitive eating, but I don’t know if it would help you since I think you’ve said you feel hunger quite often. I don’t, so eating when I feel hungry has helped me since my body doesn’t usually talk to me unless it needs something 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ve also spoke with my team’s psychologist a few times. If your team has one that could work. Wish I could be more help. But I’m afraid all I’ve offered is a “you are NOT alone” vibe.

    Pre-op diet query

    I wouldn't worry much about it. With only a seven day diet like you describe, it doesn't seem that your program is all that concerned with the "liver shrinking" aspect of it as some programs are, that do longer and more intense diets (some surgeons are seriously intimidated by that issue while others don't care in the least.)It sounds like they are mostly working to transition you to their early post op diet. While they probably don't want fruit in there owing to sugar content, raspberries are on the benign end of the scale there (which is why you may see them on a "keto approved" list somewhere. Which is another lesson here - just because something may be "keto" doesn't mean that it is right or good for your needs. Keto is not necessarily healthy or weight loss oriented (but it can be, if done right - as with many popular diets.) There is plenty of junk food out there that is "keto approved". Most here who want to do keto do something called bariatric keto, which is basically old school Atkins because the macro ratios typically seen in most keto references don't make sense with the small amount that we are eating during our loss phase (generally too low in protein.) Not to mention the dubious nature of being in ketosis - K specifically avoided that owing to its side effects and was still working to slow my weight loss after six months, so it really isn't necessary for successful weight loss, and generally a bad habit to get into for long term health and weight maintenance.

    This program does things differently than others I have looked at. You go through the classes and tests - once you get through everything then you pick your surgeon and schedule to meet with them - so they can review everything with you. So I won’t pick my surgeon until after my final class (this week) and I was told all the surgeons have varied schedules (some do more than just bariatrics if they specialize in other digestive diseases) so the schedules vary. She did recommend that when they schedule with me I ask about which surgeons have availability in our targeted timeline (if any) - so I suppose that is what I will do. They did great with getting my tests scheduled and completed - I just wish they were able to schedule to meet with the surgeon once the tests were scheduled - rather than wait until the last class … then contact you at some point after. Leaves the timeline to open and uncertain.

    That's definitely something I'm going to look into. I hope to get some other advice or suggestions while I wait to find, and talk to, a bariatric therapist. This mindset is something that I really started to notice yesterday and I talked to a couple of my friends about it and they were worried that I could easily fall down the rabbit hole of ED if I'm not careful. I was stunned when I heard this, and new right away I wanted to come post here and see what others think.

    I haven’t experienced this but I have heard of it. It’s basically swapping out one disordered eating behavior for another. Hopefully you will find some advice on here but it also couldn’t hurt to see a specialist. Many people on here have such great things to say about bariatric therapy and it seems to have helped them a great deal. I say you have come this far, what’s one more appointment to see if it feels like a good fit and if you think they can help you.
