Hi guys, I’m about three months post op and I’m struggling to stick to plan. My hunger/thirst seems to still be off and it’s getting harder to make myself drink enough water and get my protein in. Plus, I’m getting really bored with my protein options. Texture has been a big deal since surgery and certain protein shakes as well as yogurt makes me sick. And when I do want to eat, I want something that is “worth it” taste wise and find it much harder to force down the foods that I’m supposed to be eating. I was doing good on weight loss at the beginning but I’ve stalled and I know it’s because I’m not getting enough water or protein. I’m afraid of staying where I’m at or even gaining if I continue to fail to meet water and protein goals and supplement with foods that are off plan. Is anyone else going through this struggle? Any suggestions for keeping protein interesting? I guess I just need some advice and motivation. My mom had the same surgery about a year and a half before me and she’s super skinny now. I know I’m not going to get to her level because I started off at a higher weight and all but being this far behind her in the journey has been hard. She keeps encouraging me (tempting me?) to eat foods that are off plan for me right now that she is able to eat. It’s getting harder and harder to say no and it’s like she forgot what it was like to be at this stage. I feel like I’m in this alone.

Well, I'm almost 11 months out and eat probably more than the average person since I had a different surgery and my body requires more 'fuel'. I saw my nutritionist on Monday and she said I'm doing great on the food front so... I guess, I'm doing good despite the fact I do feel like I eat too much. What I ate today: Lower sugar Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal Banana Light Greek Yogurt (strawberry) Unsweetened Applesauce No Sugar Added Mandarin Orange fruit cup 2/3 Cup of Pork Roast (with two baby potatoes, onions, zucchini, and carrots) 1 Protein Bar 2/3 Cup Chicken Stir Fry using sugar free G.Hughes teriyaki sauce over cauliflower rice with veggies 2 Cheese Sticks 1 30g Protein Shake 2 Powerade Zero's It looks like a lot, but my nutritionist said I was doing good and my weight loss has been steady (I mean I only lost 2 pounds this month, but I lost 7 last month I've only been losing 5 pounds on average the last few months) so...

I'm in the pureed stage. I've been eating only Greek light yogurt and mushed foods basically. I take like 2-3 bites and feel sick.

Don't Want to Tell Family with a Twist
BigSue replied to Elinor1811's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I haven't told anyone about my surgery except medical professionals. I had family visit when I was 2.5 months out and they didn't know about my surgery. I had lost over 100 pounds since the last time they saw me. They obviously noticed that I had lost weight but I made it pretty clear it was not a topic for discussion. I was farther out from surgery than you are now, so it was probably a little easier for me since there were more foods I could eat. I cooked things that I could eat (or at least I could eat some parts), like BBQ chicken and ribs (with a choice of regular or sugar-free BBQ sauce) with veggies on the side, chili, scrambled eggs and turkey sausage, salad and wraps with grilled chicken. You can serve sides like rice, potatoes, pasta, bread and just not take any for yourself, or take a small portion and push it around on your plate. You can put out snacks for your family and not eat them, or just eat a small portion, or just grab a yogurt for yourself while others are eating chips. My family not only didn't feel like I was serving diet food, but they actually raved about how great the food was during their visit. It might not be as obvious as you think it is that you're eating tiny portions. If you take tiny bites and chew for a long time between bites, a small portion will last a long time, and unless your dad is paying really close attention to how much food is on your plate, it will look like you're eating plenty. I think it's harder to see portion sizes in a bowl than on a plate, so foods like soup, stew, or chili work well. I am a terrible liar so I don't like to say things that aren't true, but my opinion is that you have a right to privacy about your own medical history and if you have to lie a little to keep it private, it's not wrong. That said, I find it easier to tell the truth but not the whole truth -- I'm tracking my food, going low-carb, cutting back on sugar, trying to eat more slowly, drinking more water, all of which is true and helps to explain my weight loss and changes in eating habits. -
Similar to the gents above... mine was on 12/3. Had the DS w/SIPS. I just started "re-sleeping" on my side and it's glorious. I can feel a few little twists and twinges and I'm not sure if it's hurting anything. I feel my biggest challenge is the "30 minute rule" with the no drinking 30 mins before and after food. Since i'm really not consuming any real "food" yet (still on drinkable yogurt and cream soup) how important is that? I'm walking 3 to 5 miles a day so that's good. Bit of a "traffic jam" if i'm going to be honest so maybe i'm not taking on enough water. My first follow up with surgeon is tomorrow so we'll see how it goes.

Weight regain...I don't know where to start.
Cardia replied to Ann Parde's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I was looking for this forum I just joined today. I am 2 years 2 months post gastric bypass . I only had regain like for 2 to 5 pounds and that is where I was not accountable like hanging with people who introduce the foods to me and I was tempted to indulge so most times I remind myself why I did this surgery and remove myself from the situation and get back on tract. Since the pandemic I haven't gain any weight because I am vigilant with my food I do a lot of exercise like waking and work out with a trainer but now we close down again so I do from home. I find that dairy especially yogurt cause the scale not to move. Getting in my water, protein and vitamins really help me so much. I find that snacking doesn't help at all the scale goes up when I snack. Also I will try to do the no meat and see if it will help me to. You are so right nutrition plays a big role in this journey. Keep working hard at the regain it will go. Good luck -
Am i gonna puke all the time??

I was a "puker" since I was a kid....car sick=vomit, migraine=vomit, pregnancy=vomit, 3D movies=vomit. So I'm not surprised that every time I eat something that my new digestive track doesn't like...…vomit! I'm 6 weeks post op and although it has gotten better, I suspect it will be a part of my life for awhile. Yesterday it was triggered by a container of low fat Greek yogurt. After a miserable night I woke up this morning and gave my neighbor all the yogurt in my refrigerator! Just the sight of it was nauseating. I'm not being a pessimist or trying to say that vomiting is something that all WLS patients experience. But for those who were easily nauseated before surgery, it is always in the back of my mind. The dieticians have assured me that it's not anything to worry about, so I just take it as part of my body's healing process! -
Diet from program includes bread for breakfast and lunch anyone else
NewWorldMe replied to NewWorldMe's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thank you all for your feedback and support. The saga continues as they recommend carbs wholewheat crackers with tuna or chicken for breakfast and lunch and potatoes or rice with dinner. My weightloss is stuck at .8kg per week. I have told the NUT that I do not agree with the plan and have received no alternatives so I have opted to do it alone as the hospital team had no alternative. I am not ignoring carbs as they are in fruit, yogurt, etc but I do not feel good incorporating this into my daily diet. Hopefully I am making the right decision for myself -
Hi, I had my gastric sleeve surgery on 12/8/20! I’m feeling great! I’ve been able to tolerate protein shakes, water, yogurt, broth, pudding and vitamins. 😊

I didn't actively get into eating fruits until 3 months out (other than an unsweetened applesauce cup or the fruit that was in my greek yogurt) but I did have SOME veggies when in soft food stage. One of my favorites to make was a veggie soup with carrots, onion, zucchini, squash, mushrooms, peppers, and vegetable stock. I also started making no-noodle lasagna which is made using zucchini instead of noodles (it's delicious). So early on it's not so much a worry if you don't get a ton of fruits and veggies in as long as get SOME it's better than none.

That happened to me around 1 month from eating refried beans too quick or too much. If you search on here you will find a lot of us describe it as the "foamies" or slime. It's mucous. I would often have that and then most of the time would throw up a little bit of food with it. That made me feel better since I would also get really cold and have the shakes. The whole ordeal made me exhausted. It has happened maybe 4-5 times in almost 2 years. From eating too fast, not chewing and once from something that had too much sugar or fat. I have since been able to eat full sugar ice cream or candy (not endorsing that but it works for me and it is only ever a few bites) and go months without having a reaction. So for me it was just random. edit-- after these episodes I always would go back to just liquids to give my pouch a rest and work up to yogurt after 18-24 hours. By 48 hours I was back to normal.

Hi, fellow November buddies! Wanted a bit of a snack today, and needed more protein. I scooped up a bowl of vanilla Two Good yogurt (I can't do the other SF yogurts for some reason, but probably any vanilla one would work), added a scoop of unflavored protein, and then a tiny squirt of orange tangerine Mio. Was like a melted creamsicle. Really yummy! Just in case anyone needs something different ☺️

Queenhkb posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Greetings everyone, I hope that all is well for everyone reading this. Whatever is not going the best, prayers for improved circumstances soon. Question: I had gastric sleeve revision to by pass, gall bladder removal and hiatal hernia repair. I had severe GERD and that hernia made me sick not to mention the gallbladder attacks. I had inflammation from my esophagus to my intestines. Like inflammatory bowel. I was taking prednisone, bentyl, prilosec, amitiza. Lord it was rough. I had the revision 9/9/2020 and it was rough. All the surgeries at once was a blessing. I didn't want to keep going back and forth. I'm able to eat small meals and have less naseau. I eat salmon a small piece, g reek yogurt, spinach, plant based bacon, peanut butter, , protein shakes. It's been a big adjustment. I'm having difficulty Remembering things and tingling hands, constipation and mood swings. Tired. The doctor said constipation is normal take milk of magnesium, moods and hormones have to adjust. Takes time to build stamina back up. Tingling hands and lethargy could be malabsorption of nutrients and vitamins. However, they said problems remembering things at 90 days out has not been common. Anyone have this issue? I had an appointment today, took lab work and scheduled a consultation with neurologist. I supervise first responders. Being back at work has been challenging with the post operative issues. Anyone experience this? -
Hope you feel better as the day goes on! To this day, 9 months out, I don’t do well with meat. I can eat maybe 2-3oz slowly, chewing it very well, yet it still doesn’t set well with me afterward and not worth it. Chicken, beef, pork, none of it. Same with nuts. A few cashews, walnuts, etc. and it feels as though it comes up on me. My body just says, “I don’t want it.” I haven’t tried rice, but noodles feel as though they glop up sticky/stuck and come up the esophagus. Fish, a few shrimp, eggs, greek yogurt, lower fat cheese, oatmeal, lentil soup and veggies and my tummy is a happy camper. Last few months have been venturing out more to see what digests easily for me. Repeated episodes on foods mentioned above tell me it’s just the way it is now, not a one off, and that’s okay! Good luck! It’s definitely a learning journey.💝

I didn't eat noodles for the first two years after surgery and still can't eat very many of them or I have a similar reaction. I can't handle much rice at one time, either (not sure about rice noodles, though - I haven't had those since surgery). I think you're pushing your stomach too much. i was eating pretty "gentle" foods - like Greek yogurt - when I was where you are. I remember eating shrimp early on - but not sure at what point. I haven't eaten ground beef in probably 20 years, but I know I had issues with certain meats the first few months. I think most people can handle the ground variety, though. I'd just go way easier on your stomach...it takes awhile before you can eat a variety of food without issue.

meal ideas and suggestions! Drop 'em here please!
lisafrommassachusetts replied to Thewholekitandcaboodle's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 10 months out and find I need to have quick, easy high protein meals about. I like to cook, so I will do more involved stuff on the week-ends, but here are a few go-to items for me: 1. Frozen Turkey Meatballs (with a red sauce, with canned beef gravy, with mozzarella on a bed of lettuce) 2. Bag of frozen shrimp (shrimp salad for lunch with a bag of kibo high protein chips, on a salad, with cocktail sauce as a snack, with turkey sausage, cauliflower rice and cajun spice for "jambalaya"). 3. Make ahead ground turkey with LOTs of taco seasoning...night I make it we have tacos for dinner (I have the kibo chips, family has taco shells) then for a couple of lunches I have shredded lettuce, corn and taco meat 4. Turkey sausage chili with red beans and TONS of veggies and extra chili seasoning; great for these winter evenings, and I have it for lunches all week; I use Sargento 4 cheese Mexican shredded cheese with this 5. Beef barley soup; I make it on the week-end and have it all week. Delicious and filling. 6. I keep kirkland Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough protein bars on hand for when I'm craving sweet 7. Siggi Yogurt -- I love the kind with Almond Butter as an add-in; they can be hard to find so I'll have Vanilla Siggi and add 1 to 2 tablespoons of Almond or Sunflower butter. Delicious and high in protein. -
Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?
Lanie Hardy replied to Lanie Hardy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Post-op Mine is 2 days clear liquid, 2 weeks puréed and now solid “soft” for 4 weeks. The 1st thing I made was a low-fat turkey stroganoff that my family could eat too. It was amazing to bite food!! I of coarse didn’t eat the pasta, just the ground 99% fat free turkey and a little of the sauce with Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. It totally hit the spot for me. Since I’ve made homemade marinara with ground turkey, Chicken salad, and tuna salad. I think I’m cooking orange salmon (squeeze fresh orange over the salmon and bake) today. -
Lauren I'm with you 100%. Since day one I made a promise to myself not to eat processed foods and for 95% of the time I'm on board with it. I start each day with a cup of coffee (wait 30 minutes) then eat my breakfast which is a yogurt and hard boiled egg. In September after a weight gain and a spike in my A1c I stopped eating at 7PM and didn't eat agin until 8AM. This seems to have been a missing part of my weight maintenance. As for food I prepare and cook my dinners but for lunch it's usually a can fish such as sardines, tuna or salmon. Thanks for the tips. Every little bit helps in this life long struggle. Continue the healthy life.

I love.... I mean LOVE ice cream.... I found an ATKINS fudge yogurt bar. I cheat 😢 but once I get my fix, I'm ok to go back to my Fiber, Blah, blah, blah.... It's the chewing slowly that's killing me. I fight w myself. I give myself a good cussing out to stick to this new habit. 😲 I'm dedicated & it's really a mental adjustment. So for everyone who's gone through this and just starting .... good luck!! I'm right behind y'all (fingers crossed) Any suggestions on CHEWABLE VITAMINS? Pre & Post. -
Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?
Luna805 replied to Lanie Hardy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tomorrow is 3 weeks post op for me. I’m down 22 lbs from surgery. I’ve tolerated foods really well and what has been working is boiled eggs, chicken/veggie Soup, cottage cheese, string cheese, cashews, yogurt, whole wheat crackers, cauliflower, refried Beans with a sprinkle of cheese, tuna, strawberries/bananas and all the warm tea I can drink! I made dessert for husbands work and wasn’t even tempted to over eat. Had 3 small bites and sent it off. Averaging about 5 lbs a week in losses. Some pain here and there in one spot but pretty darn happy overall! -
I'd respectfully disagree with Grady here. Advice varies in the medical world & each body/stomach is unique. You may require the odd nutritious snack, especially if its high protein. I'm exercising at a level that requires more protein than many at my stage (I'm pretty new to this too!) My nutritionist wants me to have protein yogurts or bars post work out to prevent muscle loss. I know someone who has a long thin stomach & can't fit enough in at normal meal times so must supplement by snacking.

Food Before and After Photos
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It means I can eat more of it than I can other things and it’s easy for my body to digest they kind of slide through the digestive system. Other foods I find that are like that for me- multigrain crackers, toast, and sometimes yogurt depending on the kind. Other people have different ones for them. -
First, just about everyone stalls at least once on their journey regardless of their protein intake. It’s just your body taking a breath to catch up with the changes. I wasn’t getting my protein in either to begin. My goal was 60g. I couldn’t tolerate protein shakes at all - so grainy & blah! Shudder! But they’re the easiest way to meet your goals if you can tolerate them & they contribute to your fluid goal too. I added a high protein yoghurt/yogurt drink to my diet to up my daily protein intake instead. My dietician also suggested adding milk powder to my milk to make it extra rich & double the protein except I found it too sweet. I add it to my chia pudding now.

I never ate that much for months. A quarter to a third of a cup was the norm for me. It would take 3 days to eat 2 scrambled eggs. I ate three times a day & at about month 3 I started slowly adding an afternoon snack of yogurt &/or fruit. At 19 months out I eat about 3 oz of protein. I do eat more vegetables than when I was losing (about 1/2 cup now) & have more snacks. Last night I had a bare cup of bolognese ( mince beef, onions, celery, carrot, tinned tomato) over 35 mins & it was more than enough. At 5 weeks I could eat about 1/4 cup of the same. Don’t push yourself to eat to a specific amount. Just make sure you’re meeting your protein goals. We can only eat what we can eat. Eat slowly until you feel like you’ve had enough. (It takes time for the message you’re full to get through.) You don’t want to eat too much or eat until you’re over full. I can take 20 mins to an hour to eat. I’m a believer in putting my fork down between bites, waiting before I take another & asking do I really need (not want) that next bite. Some people can & do eat more. Others less. You just have to work out what is the right amount for you & your body within your program. Good luck & congrats on your surgery.

The flu and wanting carbs or to eat more calories HELP
Luna805 replied to Maryalice717's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
If your sick and craving carbs, I’d put a serving size (4-5) whole wheat or whole grain crackers in a soup. If you have someone to help you, I’d be asking for home made chicken/veggie soup. If you want an instapot recipe I make my own, I just don’t know if I’d feel like making my own if sick. Also cottage cheese and triple 0 Greek yogurts help me when I feel like I NEED carbs. I wouldn’t stress about being perfect while recovering. Get some Gatorade zero, add some yummy crackers, diet cranberry juice and Netflix until better. Hope your feeling better soon 💕
