Finding a Dr. in the NYC area
christinasweet replied to vikki1012's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi there! I was banded in June by Dr. Ren (NYU weight loss) and I could not be more pleased with with her as a physician. She is very warm and extremely professional. You might want to look into her practice. The only downside is how packed her practice is - if you are looking for something super fast this practice might be too busy for you. Good Luck! Thanks, C -
I also found that eating sugar free pudding helped me get through those first 6 weeks. Target has a big selection too!! Don't try and eat regular food to fast. Just stick with what the dr says.

I really think water is the big key. I went to the opthomologist yesterday, veins in eye inflamed. Guess what he recommended? Water, drink lots of water to help heal the eye. Seems like water just about does and cures anything. You might start checking out the sodium and fat contents of food you buy. Canned foods are always high in sodium (salt). Most frozen prepared meals are also high in sodium. Fast foods are notorious for salt. (Have you ever watched them use that big shaker at McDonald's?) I've changed my grocery buying habits now. Those are the two things that I watch out for. Salt makes you retain fluid and that's very hard on your kidneys. I don't add it to anything I eat. Most foods have plenty to begin with. Just be aware of what you're eating and how it's prepared.

Lipid Panel results question... 5 months out
sleevie.wonder posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I recently got my labs done for my 5 month post-op appointment on Wednesday. Everything came back great, except my total cholesterol number has gone up. It is still in the "normal" range (it's 166 up from 154 last year), but I find it odd that my cholesterol was lower when I was 100+ lbs heavier and heating fast food every day. Is this normal? Also, my HDL and LDL are not looking great either. My HDL has dropped to 29 (from 42 last year) and my LDL spiked to 117 (from 97 last year) I understand these are questions for my doc on Wednesday, but wanted to see if anyone had the same thing happen to them as well. -

HI Dave, I know how scary this decision is. It's true that it takes courage and determination. It sounds like you have done quite a bit of soul searching and that your struggles have been huge. I can tell you that for me, in the short 8 weeks that I have been sleeved, I have found tremendous benefits to my health. My energy is so much better but mostly my outlook on life has improved 100%!!!! I won't lie and say the're haven't been ups and downs (scale not moving at times, a little pain returning to my incisions after it was gone, difficulty getting in proteins) But, it has always passed!!!! and I know it will pass. I accept that it is a process, NOT an over night transformation. However, all in all, it is a fast process! and that keeps me so happy, positive and motivated because, again, I *know* that each day I will move forward with this sleeve! It is great that week to week something good happens. And I just feel happy. I know that in a few months from now, a year from now etc. I will be even further along! It is great to read on these boards about people's successes, even if they've had a few struggles here and there. I think most everyone seems to have benefits of daily improvements in health, activity level, optimism, confidence boosts, in addition to weight loss. This surgery is totally doable!!! The benefits when weighed against the detriments of our weight issues are tremendous. Most of us don't get to this place on a whim. We don't take this lightly. We are prepared to do some hard work. But we know our efforts will pay off. I've said this before, we are so lucky to be able to take advantage of this science/technology/advancement, whatever you want to call it. I'm 48. I wish it was available 15 years ago! LOL I definitely have no regrets. I wish you the best of luck on this journey as well as great health an energy. I think you are going to do GREAT!!!! Looking forward to reading more about your journey and progress!!!!! -
Yay 34 Pounds Lost In 1 Month!
shelbym replied to MsFab1988's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats that is awesome!! I was sleeved may 15th... So far I've lose 51 lbs! It has come off extremely fast. I'm so scared for when it slows down! But I do a pretty intense workout 6 days a week and I feel great! I barely followed the diet ever since I stepped out the hospital though but of course I have made a 180 turn around in my diet since the sleeve! If anything it's just hardest to get that stupid protein in ugh! -
Liquid is a tough stage. I'm on puréed and I can have cottage cheese, tuna fish, chicken salad, mashed potatoes. Soups with soft veggies, and scrambled eggs.. It's a lot better than the liquid stage. I have ate too fast and got sick so it's important to remember to eat slow and space it out.

9 day pre-op liquid diet...protein shakes
MoxieDO replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
P.S. dont do the slim fast shakes, they have lots of sugar and will do nothing to help you. I have protein shake in morning followed by 2 snacks: either cheesestick or protein shot. For lunch or dinner I usually eat a soup of some sort (my preop diet is a full liquid diet, so I can). At night I might have a sugar free popsicle or sugar free pudding. Somewhere in there I have starbucks something or other, cause I gotta stay awake to study. I also eased into my diet by taking the first 3 days and gradually adding or subtracting one thing of another...helped me to not go crazy. -
It means "Productive Burping". Apparently it means when u possibly eat too fast, or don't chew well enough, when you burp, some of it comes back up

So, I got on Tinder shortly after my sleeve surgery. (What was I thinking?! I hadn't dated in YEEEEEARS!) I had lost about 40 pounds and was already feeling so good - mentally and physically. The three biggest takeaways I got after using Tinder for three months: 1) Meet for coffee. Keep it casual. Going to dinner with someone you don't know can be excruciating, especially if you haven't been talking for long and you feel there's pressure for it to go well. Meeting for adult drinks is casual, but obviously it's not good for your stomach and if the date goes well, you won't be able to keep up after a drink or two. When you meet for coffee, there's no pressure to finish food or explain yourself. 2) Expect the unexpected. Guys you think that are totally into you will disappear. Guys you thought may not have the time of day for you will want to meet you out of the blue. There's hardly any courtesy on Tinder (e.g. ghosting, cancelled dates, flaking, etc.) 3) People are diverse. There are SOOOOOO many unique souls out there! Wow. Like, a lot. We just need to find ONE (I'm assuming you want to be monogamous lol). It will take time - or, at least, it usually does. I met guys that I knew almost immediately were not my type but enjoyed my time with them because I learned more about them and myself in the process. I will always be uncomfortable with my body. I know that sounds sad, but it's something I feel is true. And while I've made SOOOOOO much progress with my weight and my confidence, I know I will always feel uncomfortable being naked. So I eventually got off Tinder. Why? Because I met my boyfriend. He's silly, sweet, and supports me 100%. Once we began dating in earnest and were having meals together, he asked baldly, "Did you have weight loss surgery?" I felt my heart fall to the floor. OMG OMG OMG I didn't want him to know!!! WTF?!! And in those few seconds I realized I needed to be honest with him even though it was embarrassing and I was upset he would ask something so personal. I said, "Yeah, I did - why?" He told me he noticed I didn't eat very much and his friend had also recently done it. But he asked so casually because he said he didn't think it was a big deal. (!!!!) Fast forward 10 months later, we're still happily dating. I'm uncomfortable with my body but he's always telling me how much he loves everything about me including my body (which is SO hard to believe but I just go with it). He makes me feel comfortable in every possible way which is what I needed. Yes, I need therapy. LOL

Totally agree about TV and food! Goodness, I never noticed until on this liquid diet how true that was! I suggest DVR so you can fast forward though all of those commercials. And I went to bed early a couple of nights just because I was hungry. And was kind of being crabby to the hubby...or so he claims

Had my band unfill because I took a 12 hour flight roundtrip to UK from US and the 24 hours in the air tightened my band so tight I could barely get fluid down tried to wait it out but weight just dropped off and I must say I loved it but my Drs and husband were not impressed. My husband pushed for an unfill . . . . a complete unfill until I could gain the 30 lbs I had lost since the trip (2 months). I had never been unfilled since I had the Band in 2009. Went for the complete unfill against my will and gained 30 lbs really fast with band being that tight it was like being on a strict diet and then stopping . . . weight just pours on. Now I am refilling but it is not the same. Never and I say never get a complete unfill unless no other answer to fix the problem. Take out half, take out 3/4 don't take out all. I always believed and still believe the less you mess with your band the less chances you have to to have problems

Still having shoulder pain 4 months post op
Humming Bird replied to reneek's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was banded 07/09/09 and still have shoulder pain. It is getting better, but very slow. I usually get the pain if I eat too fast, too much, or food that is too solid. If the pain lingers into the evening I use half of a menthol pain patch (equate/ walmart brand). It works very good. There is another thread here somewhere titled something like best explination for shoulder pain .... very good info there. -
I have had 3 surgeries in the last 2 years, a band placement, a band revision, and now the sleeve, and they were all late in the day like yours, waiting to go in sucks, but afterward your sooo drowzy and doped up and the nurses are in and out taking blood preasures and all that stuff you'll wish someone would leave you alone. dont worry, it;ll go by fast, and you'll be home. good luck on your surgery and weight loss......vicki

I don't know how true this is, but I once looked into various fasts that people do for short periods to detoxify their bodies, and those people were thrilled when their tongues turned white as it supposedly indicated that toxins were leaving the body. The theory is that once the liver gets a break from its daily duties with digestion, it can turn its attention to cleaning up the body. Who knows... but if my tongue turns white, that is the theory I am running with. Linda - I noticed your surgery was today. I hope everything went great and that you are now in the comfort of your home! Bob

I'm a lower BMI and am probably a slow loser too. 8# in October. But I'm still a loser! And for the first time in my life, I believe I will keep it off. Slow, fast, it doesn't matter. It will happen!

You have to fight for it...
XXShelXX replied to CoffeeGrinDR's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
U know just when I start to feel so frustrated with the scale not moving fast enough for me, someone makes a post like this. This really does help and u are right we are all in the same boat here. Only you guys really know what it's like day to day. To want it sooooooo bad and know you are doing what you're supposed to and still the scale stays the same. I too want x=y. If someone said do this and it'll move, I would so be doing it. But it's the patience thing. I just want to skip the next few months and wake up and there it is lol continuing the fight in my lil part of the world. You're not alone. -
I've lost a lot. I had a lot of weight to lose, so I've been super restrictive with my diet for 14 months. It started coming out around month 4, that lasted 3-4 months, and it's not really coming back very fast. I went to the dermatologist, got some cortisone shots in my head which quickly halted the loss. I wish I had done that sooner. I also got a topical solution which seemed to help the loss. After the shots, I could see some regrowth. My hair was a little thin to start with, now it's really bad. I use Bosley fibers to cover up the shiny scalp at the part. Yesterday I got a new product from the dermatologist that's supposedly been used with great success in Europe for years, and was just approved for use in the US in the past of couple of months. It's a shampoo, topical spray, and vitamins. The NP said her friend also has thinning hair, has been using this about 6 weeks, and you can definitely see regrowth, so I'm really hoping it works for me.

Husband doesn't want me to lose any more
Thinny replied to Rarely here's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You look great. I actually spoke to my doctor about not wanting to lose too much. I don't want to start looking wrinkled and unhealthy so I'm ok being a few pounds over, I just want to get in the healthy range. He advises that most patients get in the very lowest of their overweight tier. Then slow it down from there. Slow it down is not eat more (so tell hubby that eat more carbs is a no no) it will just bring back old habits, He suggest cutting down on vigorous exercise. Weight loss will continue but not as fast, I know you want to lose and I will be facing a similar situation when I get there. But in the end you gotta do you! Maybe if you slow it down he'll come around. And get a ticker or something please. You're a success and I can't see your journey. But the end result is fantastic! -
I wish i could eat that fast. :-) this morning it took me like 45 min to do 1/4 cup of Greek yogurt. I have been trying to go show bc after like every bite i get purpy and a little chest pain. The pain eases as soon as i burp or my tummy gurggles, but it's uncomfortable so i am going slow. I had to warm my 1/2 cup of soup up 3 times last night Lol

13 days til surgery and now I'm scared :-(
mrs.mda posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, I'm new here and so glad I've found rnytalk! Surgery has been my goal for the past 6 months and now that everything's a "GO!" I'm so anxious and afraid. I feel like my concerns may be a bit invalid/vain however I still feel this way. But I figure this will be the place to help me through-- 1. What do I tell my coworkers about my "mysterious" weight loss? I shouldn't be ashamed about the surgery but my weight has ALWAYS be an embarrassing subject for me!! 2. How do I not have/reduce the issue of excess skin as I work toward my goal weigh? My heart is beating fast as I type cause I'm so scared. I feel like I can't admit my fears because my support people will be like "well, don't have the surgery then!" But they don't really understand what this is like for me :-( I have a few other concerns but these are the most pressing issues right now. -
thanks for the replies! I had my surgery at the end of February. And yes, ive made good progress. I've been working out really hard for the whole time. But recently I've noticed that I'm able to eat some of my problem foods again, like bread! Thats why i'm thinking its time for a new fill. I know people say the thing about building muscle, but i think the reality is that its really hard to put on muscle that fast. I think its gotta be Water weight, maybe from the swelling. I dunno, all I know is its frustrating to be at basically the same weight and gaining for a month or so solid after losing for so long consistently. Maybe you guys are right and I'm over reacting, but you will see how obsessive you can get about it after it starts working for you!

Frustrated with the small amounts of food? I am!
CyndiMomto3 replied to SpideyMom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I know exactly what you mean! I was running around cleaning this morning and made some egg whites with salsa and fat free mozz (yum) and I kept re-heating them because I never sat down to eat them...well then when I finally did eat them, I ate them too fast and they got stuck. TMI but I threw them up about 30-60 sec later. I was really bummed! I think I am still getting over just mentally WANTING to eat...not that my body necessarily needs what my mind WANTS, does that make sense??
