Best Option...Bypass or Sleeve..... Please Help.
LindsayT replied to LouiseCorn's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Full disclosure, I haven't had surgery yet, but I wanted to share how I made my decision (surgergy is April 24th). I chose gastric bypass (RNY) because I have GERD, and the overall outcome is slightly better than sleeve. There are pros and cons on both surgeries, so it really comes down to what you're willing to live with. And what actually transpires is different for everyone, so there is no way to predict what will happen until after the procedure. For example, RNY can cause dumping syndrome, and sleeve can increase GERD, but not in everyone. I recommend doing your research and speaking with your surgeon about any concerns you have. It is such a big decision. Best of luck! -

I am hoping to have either a Gastric bypass or Gastric Sleeve in the near future. I had a gastric band approx 10 years ago. I have 2 questions that I really hope some kind souls may be able to advise me with or share an opinion. Question 1: Which in your opinion is the best option Gastric Bypass or Gastic sleeve.? Question 2: As I've had a gastric band before are both of these options avaiilable to me. Many thanks in advance for any help or support. I really appreciate it. Lou -
Hiatal hernia surgery before Gastric Bypass?
BLAKQUEEN replied to AmandaD.'s topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Good morning, I had my gastric bypass on March 7th, I had a hiatal hernia also. My surgeon did both in same operation. My hernia was also big it was the second time I had a hernia repair with WLS. First time was in 2009 when I had a gastric band it was also done in same surgery. Ask your surgeon why he wants to do it in two surgeries. Good luck -
Hiatal hernia surgery before Gastric Bypass?
AmandaD. posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello! I just had my second office appointment after my endoscopy and my surgeon told me since my hiatal hernia is large he would have to do that surgery first and then a couple of months later he would do the gastric bypass surgery. I was expecting to do both at the same time and now this changes a lot due to time off, healing, etc. I was just wondering if anyone else has had two separate surgeries in their process and how it went? How long did you wait to have the actual gastric surgery? How was HH recovery vs the Gastric? Any information would be greatly appreciated! thank you!! -
I had my conversion to bypass surgery on 2/28 and have been spotting since. Has something to do with our hormones and the sudden rapid weight loss. I also have an IUD. Sent from my SM-G998U using BariatricPal mobile app

Should I get surgery
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Terry PVB's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes, you are definitely working yourself up lol If you know it's the right thing for you, don't psych yourself out. I am one of the very unlucky ones that has to have a revision. I never had gerd or reflux before my surgery, so I chose the sleeve. I have LOVED my sleeve. Unfortunately, it caused horrible gerd that also caused gastritis and esophagitis, so I was put on 80mg of Nexium. I've been on it for 7 months now, and it caused polyps all through my stomach. I've had 2 surgeries to remove them, and now nodules all through my duodenum, which also have to be removed. Once they are, I'll be cleared to have my revision to bypass. I'm told that should take care of the gerd, which will allow me to get off the Nexium, which will stop the formation of polyps and nodules. I still don't regret my sleeve. I've lost over 110 pounds, gotten off all 3 of my diabetes meds, gotten off my blood pressure med, my mobility is way way better, I work out 5 days per week, all my labs have come back normal repeatedly, I can honestly say it's still the best thing I've ever done, even with the complications. -
Mine didn't get serious till about 4 or 5 years later too. It got to the point that it was "uncontrollable" and no PPI worked. It wasn't till my throat was literally burning 24/7 that I decided I had to get it revised or I would be risking throat cancer.

I’m allowed occasional use too - not full dose & not for continuous days. But I have a sleeve & bypass could be different. Can you still give your surgeon a call & ask if you can? I rarely have need to take pain relief either, thankfully, but non nsaid meds like paracetamols don’t help at all if I do. I did try Voltaren gel for back pain but as my pain isn’t muscular (oozy discs) it didn’t help at all.

Do you think I can lose 70lbs naturally? I'm at a crossroads :(
Arabesque replied to helenah's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I too have lost weight many, many times but every single time I put the weight back on. So can you lose weight without surgery? Yes. The real question is can you keep it off. I always went back to eating the same way as soon as a diet was over so of course I put the weight back on. I also messed up my metabolic rate by doing those very low calorie diets too many times & practising meal skipping to ‘manage’ my weight. The surgery gave me time to change everything about what, why & when I ate, my habits & whole relationship with food. It was the best thing I ever did. I lost all my weight & more & have pretty much maintained that weight. Has it restricted my life in any way? No. Now some truths about weight loss surgery. The average weight loss after bypass or sleeve surgery is about 65% of the weight you have to lose to put you in a healthier weight range. Some lose less & some more. A lot of this is because of the new set point the surgery gives you (the new weight your body is happiest at & is easiest to maintain). Everyones set point is different & it may not be a low weight. Some lose less because a higher weight & new eating style better complements them & how they want to live their life. It may be because of age, gender, genetics, health issues, medications, personal choices, complacency, life events, bounce back regain, etc. The long term success of the surgery depends upon you & the changes you make to your eating, relationship with food & the head work you need to do to understand & manage those factors. It certainly is worth a conversation with the surgeon & then you will be better informed to make your decision. In the end, you are the only one who truely knows your self, your situation & lifestyle & your weight loss/gain history. All the best whatever you decide. -
Lapband to gastric sleeve success stories
tinaaw7 replied to panda1983's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I had a lapband in 2011. I lost 225lb and in 2021 I had it removed r/t complications. I was too small for a revision at 123lb so I had no help and I have gained over 100lbs back from yo yo dieting. I am now approved for the sleeve so hopefully this works. Please let me know your success. Since I am going down a similar path soon. -
I'm not sure how common it is, but I know that a lot of sleeve patients have to get a revision to bypass, due to reflux.

I’m 15 years post surgery. I’ve never taken any pain reliever other than Tylenol. Has anyone else’s doctor suggested an alternative to pain relievers? I was told they were working on an Ibuprofen cream years ago but I haven’t really found something that works. Is anyone else worried about the future with pain as we age? I’m 55 years old and have been very lucky to have minimal body aches. Please let me know if any long term bypass people have solved this.

Hello, As of Feb 18th, I was 4 years out from surgery. Surgery went well, except for about 2 weeks after surgery I had sever GERD. The doctors weren't sure what was causing it other than I went from the Lap Band to Sleeve. It lasted about 2 weeks and then there after never had a issue until just recently. I was taking 1 Prilosec a day and now bumped it to 2x a day. Since that was not really working, I tried Pepcid and that has not worked that I can tell. I do have an appointment next week with my bariatric doctor and Im thinking they are going to order a upper GI. Im just wondering if anyone has experience this being this far out from surgery. I thought with being 4 years out that I wouldn't have this issue. Im scared to death that they won't figure it out and they will try to transition me to full bypass. Thank you,

Endoscopic revision
Tammi J replied to Nectar12's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am scheduled for this on March 23. I am concerned too as this is more about alleviating symptoms of GERD and not weight loss. I have kept most of my weight off for the past 11 years but have been struggling with major GERD symptoms. They said my pouch as double in size along with a hiatal hernia. The revision of the pouch through endoscopy is said to make it better. I am very hopeful. -
Having GERD. Will insurance cover revision if BMI IS 31?
Tammi J replied to NewlySleeved12282020's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have had the same issues and will be going in for revision surgery on March 23. I have already had Roux en y surgery that is 11 years old and I have a BMI of 27, insurance is covering the procedure to make my pouch back to its original size as it has stretched to double the recommended size. Luckily I have not gained a lot of weight back but do have the GERD complications along with a hiatal hernia. The surgery will address the gerd but at this time my surgeon feels leaving the hernia alone is my best option. Hopefully your insurance doesn't give you a hard time as GERD is awful. -

Good morning! I have had gastric bypass and my surgery went well which was done 20 years ago. I have had health issues cone up as I get older but hopefully nothing to worry about. My brother had gastric bypass in October 2022 and he cant eat. He vomits are not even due to food but any gastric contents that he has in his stomach. He literally has not even a teaspoon of food but that still upsets his stomach. Drinking any liquids is as bad as trying to eat. He is pretty much skin and bones at this point. He has taken every over the counter medication and even prescriptions do not help. He has had medical test that show nothing and he has become desperate as to hos current condition. He was a vibrant man before and now he has become this sickly man that looks like an frail older man. Does anyone have any suggestions on how he can keep his food down or how to resolve this problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you and have a great day!

Anyone else doing this in their 60's?
Teresa Eschenbaum posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi all! I am 5 weeks out of bypass surgery and will turn 61 tomorrow. The healing process has been easier than I expected. I initially went in to get help with my hiatal hernia and severe acid reflux. Long story short, my surgeon told me that bypass would be the best answer for me. I was recently diagnosed as a diabetic and have high BP. Both of those are so much better that I am off my diabetes meds already and hoping my BP meds will be reduced soon. I go for a follow up with my dr. next week. I am hoping to get cleared to do more exercising than just walking. My sister-in-law wants me to join her doing some high intensity workouts with an online program she belongs to. She is very fit already (she is a kick ass police officer) so I have some catching up to do! I want to strengthen my arms, legs and abs to get ready for golf season. I am an avid golfer, not the best in our league but I only started a few years ago. Very competitive chick here! When I went for a group meeting (others going through the same surgery) with the nutritionist a couple weeks before surgery, I was by far the oldest one in the room which I was just fine with. Just wondering if there are any more of you out there in my age group that are also on this journey. -
It's been a long while that I have been off this forum but thought I'd come back for support and information. Can anyone tell me if they had a hernia after bypass. What symptoms did you have & did it need to be removed?

Should I get surgery
Arabesque replied to Terry PVB's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
No I haven’t had a revision or need to repair a complication. I have three friends who have also had surgery & they haven’t either. Revisions are sometimes needed (for personal choice like to lose additional weight or medical reason like gerd) & sometimes a complication arises that needs corrective surgery but they aren’t all that common. Ask your surgeon how many they have done. You may be surprised. -
Should I get surgery
Terry PVB replied to Terry PVB's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thank you for all your wonderful and thoughtful responses, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it! I was filling out my forms today (for my initial consultation) and I saw a section asking if I was going in for a revision. This made me think that I may be signing up for a lifetime of hospital stays to fix this and that... and I am not into that. I also watched a video today where a leak could cause you to stay in hospital for months. Oh man, I am really working myself up. I know this is the right thing for me but I would like to know from you guys if you have had to go back for any corrective procedures ?
