Some people say that hair loss is a part of the bariatric surgery experience. You might be interested in reading more about it. To those who are experiencing hair loss after sleeve gastrectomy, Google: Telogen effluvium. You will find many explainations about hair loss, some of which are connected to shocks to the system, severe diets being one. There is information there about the nutrients needed to keep our hair follicles "awake" and growing.

I had tried everything.. Camomile tea, melatonin 10 mgs, zoplicon.. you name it. I would be sleepy enough to be miserable but not enough to fall asleep. I would then increase the dose, not sleep all night and end up going to work like a zombie. After the surgery, I can sleep for 12 hours and still be hugging my pillow when it's time to get up. I don't take any sleeping aides and I have not added anything to my routine apart from the weight loss process. After having to go through years of no sleep of 3-4 hours maximum, I now wonder how anyone can be grumpy through out the day with 8+ hours of sleep every night. That's happened to me with every weight loss campaign ever (and likely will with this one). For me it makes sense...any kind of weight loss requires me to pay attention/be conscious about food and it's effects, self-consciousness is just another facet of it. For most of my life, I wasn't actually miserable about my weight, I just completely ignored it! Once a year or so, usually after seeing a particularly unflattering photograph, I resolved to "do something", with varying successes but it wouldn't be too long until I got distracted by life. You, of course, know on your head that you look better in a swimsuit than all those pounds ago...your heart just needs to catch up. When in doubt fake it 'til you make it!

As someone stated above, nothing will stop it. However, you can try to limit it by making sure you consume enough Protein and vitamens. Basically, when you lose weight you are actually putting stress on the body which causes hormonal changes which in turn leads to hair loss. This form of hair loss is temporary. Once your weight stabilizes hair shedding will stop. One trick you can do is to cut your hair short, if possible. This lessons the psychological freak-out of finding a bunch of long hairs in your hands after washing your hair. Men have it better with this and many men may not even tell they are even shedding hair due to men normally having short hairstyles to begin with. Be careful of using Rogaine for women or similar products. Many people may not realize that these products cause temporary hair shedding as well before any results are seen. Besides, these products are really only good for a specific condition unrelated to the hair shedding associated with a large amount of weight loss.

I'm 2.5 months post gastric sleeve surgery and I'm losing a lot of hair when I shampoo. Any advice?

I am almost four weeks out and am still tired. I am getting the fluids and the protein, for the most part, but still can't walk too far. I have been to the grocery store or to Costco but that is my BIg outing for the day. It might be my age---i'm 65. Pre op weight was 307. I have lost 24 pds (including pre op weight loss). I am on soft foods. I am afraid I will never get my energy back. any advice from someone farther down the road???

Starting the journey...
JerseyGirl68 replied to shaunajared's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Shauna! Welcome! I'm 8 months out and could not be happier, feel better or be more certain that this was the best choice for me. I don't presume this is the optimal route for everyone. I have been incredibly fortunate that I had a very smooth recovery and steady loss since my surgery. In my mind, I am a slow loser, but that really is just in my mind. I've been averaging about 10lbs a month since surgery. I no longer turn to food every time I'm having a bad day or weak moment. Not to say I haven't thought about it, I just don't want to derail myself. I want to suck every ouce out of this honeymoon phase for as long as I can. It is not the easiest thing I've ever done (gaining the weight was) It took some restructuring, some patience and a lot of support from my family/friends and the good folks here at VST. They have been my greatest advocates, cheerleaders and butt kickers when called upon. I read everything I could get my hands on to prepare myself and feel I went into this fully prepared. I agree that making the decision was probably the hardest for me. Only in the sense that I had to be honest about my needing help to finally be successful. And committing to the life-long changes I needed to make. It's never fun thinking you can't do something on your own. But I keep reminding myself that the sleeve is only a tool. I AM doing the work. I'm making the choices, I alone am accountable for my success. Boy to I feel like a motivational speaker rep. . I decided to take this year for me.. Focus on me, my health and my commitment to this process. the first few months I purposfully avoided situations where it would be harder to stay the course. We all have those in our life that say "just one pices of cheesecake won't hurt"... Those tend to be those that can stop at one piece, in my experience. 8 months into it, I'm stronger than I thought and enjoy events /dinners out as much as I ever did. With my choices in place, and my home stocked with those good choices, I am finding this to be the "easiest" way I have lost weight. I am lucky that I do not feel hunger, though I expect it may return and I am ready for it. I know that if I am struggling I have this forum full of those that came before me that know exactly how I am feeling and can be of tremendous help. The restriction for me is key, I still portion my food, mostly just not to waste. I now have a blast running around with and after my young neice. Something that was much harder for me a year ago. No regrets at all, unless you cound wishing I had done it sooner a regret. I wish you as smooth a journey as I have been fortunate to have. Good luck!! -

I'm almost 3 months post-op, and my fine/thin hair is starting to fall out faster also. Sleeve4Me- your hair clips look beautiful! If it gets to the point where you can see bald spots or it's too thin, I may look into getting a weave or extensions. I'm curious to see what others are doing in this same predicament. edit: Also, would cutting my hair shorter help with volume?

I think that is true about when you are really heavy that people do not comment on your weight loss. I had my first compliment today from a friend who hasn't seen me in a month. I think people get used to our roller coaster weight loss...I know I have lost 40 lb. before and gained it all back! They do not know that the band is different. That this time it is going to work. Maybe they are just scared to say anything and get our hopes up.

I was just glad to know that someone else had noticed the loss. Thank You all for your comments.

Pre-Opt Diet Question
RJ'S/beginning replied to KatieOkieDokie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on day 8 of pre-op....four Slim Time shakes and all the Water I can drink....that's it! Even though I have not weighed myself....I feel smaller ....and my daughter and husband say they can see a loss.... This pre-op is hell.......I must really want this surgery to put myself through this! -
Hey all, Not to sound nasty or TMI, but I have a serious question and wonder if you guys can help. I don't seem to be going to the bathroom enough... I'm not constipated per say, but it seems to me that it would be a lot healthier if I went more often. Before surgery, I didn't go to the bathroom terribly often.. maybe once a day or every other day... but now it's seemed to stretch out even more. I try to eat more Fiber, but I'm wondering if there are any supplements or anything else that would be recommended. I'm losing steadily, and I'm wondering if my digestive tract was functioning better if this would be a boost to my weight loss and over all health. Any suggestions or thoughts would be much appreciated! :smile2:

How many calories are you getting? Most Docs recommend around 1000 a day. Do you exercise? You absolutely must get you water and protein in. I do best with 70+ grams of protein and around 100 oz of water. Keep in mind that you have less to loose than some of us so you loss may be slower. You've lost almost 1/4 of your weight I. 3 mos. If you can keep that up you should be fine.

I know people that have a had a fill and the incision is still a little "raw"and there is no issue at all. It sounds like to you need to take smaller bites. I still take bites the size of my finger nail (and Im 7 yrs. out). Make sure you finish your first bite and swallow it before you take your second bite. It does take some getting used to "practice" this but you will get the hang of if it. Tom, Toronto Banded July 6 06 Wt. Loss: 160 lbs

My original weight loss tracker So I have made SOME progress. At my appointment yesterday I was up 8 pounds from my last appointment in April of 2009. So that's not so bad, could have been a lot worse. Could also have been a lot better if I'd gone in sooner.

I got my preliminary approval today!!! The only thing I have to do now is lose 14 lbs.(5% of current weight) once that is done they will schedule surgery. Monday I have my nutritionist, psychological appt and meet with surgeon. I will get my meal plan for the weight loss then. They have already told me it will be a long liquid diet. Any tips on the liquid diet would be great. I've already started t accumulate cases of premier Protein drinks???? It's starting to get real!!!!

Let me introduce myself, my name is Amy and I am a 27 year old mother to a wonderful lil 3 year old boy who was born with a very rare brain disorder. I was sleeved on December 21st 2011 in Canon City, Co by Dr. Timothy Brown. My pre-op process was very fast moving and with-in 1 month of asking my then primary doctor about getting the sleeve, I had met all the requirements and was scheduling the date for my surgery. I chose to do the sleeve for several reasons but my biggest reason was to be a healthy Mother for my son. I was on over 8 prescription medications for BP, high cholest, diabetes, sleeping aids, heartburn and more. I have never really been a "small" girl but after my mother passed in the same year my son was born (2008) my weight sky rocketed. My son is non-verbal and among many other health issues he is also not walking or crawling yet. I am now unable to work because my days are full of providing the special needs care my boy needs. I noticed that I had begun stress eating, and moving around a lot less due to spending 80% of my time at doctor appts or playing with him on the floor. I found out that my son would be starting a special needs pre-k in January and knew I had to get my health in check because I now have no excuses for time, 3 hours- 4 days a week I have free. I am over a month post-op now and about 25 lbs down. I weighed 220 the day of surgery but had been as heavy as 235 in the past. I am extreamly excited to have lost the weight and be off most of the meds but I am having this horrible case of the " not doing good enough blues." I have reached a point that I have lost most of my motivation because shortly after surgery my son's health issues flared up and it took me until just 4 days ago to get my gym membership. I also have the biggest frustration about my food intake. I can eat anything I want and am 1 of those lucky sleevers that does noit get sick or barely even uncomfortable if I overeat/ eat the wrong things. My will power has really had to play a huge role in my eating lately but everytime I eat even the smallest bite of a "wrong" food I feel like crying because I want to be sick, I want to have a low tolerance to bigger portions but now all I can do is deal with it. This is the 1st time I have ever blogged and just like I could talk anyones ear off I am certain I could type a novel so I will stop for now but what I will say is this... I do not and will never regret my sleeve. Every person is different and even though I am lossing weight I know it is only half my battle. Seeing the numbers drop on the scale is one thing but being mentally prepared and motivated is what is really going to make all the difference. Just my opinion
