    Band to sleeve in one?

For me blue cross covered either the removal or the revision due to complications. But once removed you would be starting fresh and need to be approved for the procedure.that means going through all the steps. For my revision the only thing I needed to go through was a demonstrated complication. Nothing else mattered. No BMI or weight or comorbidities needed.
  2. You need to call your doctor and get them to check you out. I was banded in April (4/10) - I had a lot of port site pain myself. Not knowing what to expect I let it go believing it was normal recovery pain. I went for my first fill at the end of May and found out my port had flipped. My pain was from the stitches being ripped and the port moving around. I wish I would have called when I suspected something was wrong - which was week one. I was late on my fills because of revision surgery. It delayed my progress - but everything has been corrected. You'd rather be safe than sorry.
  3. hey heartfire I have the same pinch and pain in my port area too. I was just wondering if those pinches ever went away on their own for you or do you still deal with the pain? Did you require revision surgery to correct the issue? Everytime I move in a certain way I can feel a sharp pinch and I was just wondering what this could be.
  4. How far out from surgery are you? The pain went away fairly quickly. It was b/c I was trying to catch my DD and I'm sure I pulled some stitches. My port actually moves now. Dr can manipulate it with his fingers. Really strange! If I bend over wrong it feels like it's trying to flip but when I stand up, it pops back in to place. Dr can still access it for fills so we're not worried about it. Once he can't access it, then we'll have to do a revision. I'm hoping that never happens! :Banane01: Anyway, if you're not healing from surgery and it's been awhile, I'd call my doc. You need to let him know what's going on and find out if it's anything to worry about. If you ARE healing from surgery and it seems to be pretty often that you're feeling this, I'd still call him. At the very least, everything is fine and it will relieve you mind but if there is a problem, it gets resolved quickly. Best wishes and let me know what you find out! Take care!

    Vertical Sleeve vs Band

    a) there is a "forum" on lapband to sleeve patients you might want to check that out- I have (for another week) the lap band and am getting a revision to a sleeve- I am NOT a lapband hater- I am not having my lapband removed because of slippage, erosion, malfunction etc. I have an auto immune disease and it is thought by my phsyicians that my body is "rejecting" the band as a foreign body in my body and not allowing me to get better physically from the auto immune issues. I was successfull with the band- lost 100lbs and about 89 inches all over- I have since gained back about 35 lbs total over the last year due to in-activity (no exercise due to back injury) and having band un-filled- My personal advice would be this- Unless you have only minimal weight to loose i'd say 45-75 lbs then consider the band- if you have 75+ lbs to loose then look at your other options- The studies when I was banded 3 years ago about the sleeve were not available and now that I am being sleeved there are new studies out about the band. I am reading now that the band is normally only reccomended for 4-5 years and that statistically most band pts have it removed and revisioned into something else. Only you and your doctor know what is best for you, your body and your future- You should not let anyone on here persuade or disuade you. We all have made whatever decisions we made on our own- Yes it is nice to have advice and opinions BUT you have to live with what you decide etc... There is a pain in the arse factor too about the band with fills, follow up etc- looking back it was a bit of a pain but not to inconvenient- AND there were a lot of foods I couldnt eat but I found new foods that I did like that I would have NEVER tried before.. So for me it wasnt a complete loss... Good luck with whatever you decide to do- I'm sure you will do great!

    On The Other Side

    I am not prepared!

Yes I was not quite prepared. I had my first appointment to discuss my band to sleeve revision and then 2 weeks later I was in surgery. And I had to make an unexpected trip across country for work in that 2 weeks. But I was determined to do it so I just went with the flow.
  9. I am new here as well and I am considering revising to the bypass from having the sleeve last year in May. I have vertigo and very much confined to my bed accept for when I am working, which is quite difficult. However, I have been stalled for quite some time and have picked back up 30 of the pounds I lost. I started at 326 and the scales 279 now, I am seriously considering the bypass. Some days I can eat more than I should and other days I don't eat nothing.I do a lot of bored snacking sine I work from home. I wold love to follow your journey and perhaps be each others support.

    Pregnancy after gastric sleeve?

Hi italianlady13, I am not a seasoned sleever yet but I am a seasoned bander, LOL. I am having a revision from a band to sleeve on 06/23/11. The more I am reading it seems as though I am one of the MANY people having a revision from band to sleeve. I know there have been many people who have been successful with the band but from my experience I do regret it. I did initially lose 60 lbs. with the band but that was only because I could not keep any food down and I pretty much lived off of Soup. When they would loosen the band then there was no restriction at all. I guess they never really found that happy in-between. I have been having the band since 2006 and in 2010 I got pregnant. My doctor loosened the band just a little but I gained a whopping 80lbs for ny pregnancy. My baby is now 7 months old and of the 80 lbs I gained for the pregnancy I have been able to lose 20lbs. This puts me right back where I was before I got Lap Band. I went to have an upper GI X-Ray done 2 weeks ago and find out that my band has partially slipped and it can slip completely at any time which if that were to happen it would be an emergency surgery. So now I am scheduled to have this band out and a revision to the sleeve. I always thought that somewhere maybe 25-30 years down the road the band would have to come out, I just never thought that it would be 5 years later. I will be more than happy to have this band out and to hopefully be able to eat a small amount of food and be full without throwing up every single meal. Anyhow, I am sure that you will choose the best choice for you and again everyone is different. I just wanted to share my story with you. Best of luck to you!

  13. Hope you found in your Options Orientation that Kaiser's information is VERY up-to-date and is quite informative on the RNY and vertical sleeve options. Also, you will find the 12-week Options classes educational and helpful in beginning to learn about our new lifestyle and eating habits. Kaiser will still do the lapband if a patient absolutely insists on it, but it is highly discourged because of the many complications that procedure has had. Kaiser is doing many revision surgeries to remove bands to either the sleeve or RNY. I am 4 years from my sleeve surgery through Kaiser Fontana and cannot say enough good things about the bari program there. Fontana has four support groups per month. Hope you have a similar experience there in OC. Good luck with your decision!

    No weight loss

I'm 10 wks out from a band revision. I lost 18 lbs (I started at 174 so I knew Id lose slower) 5he first 6 wks. Haven't lost a lb in 4 wks. I'm traveling now visiting family in a different state. Guess I'm using that as an excuse to eat crap. Not very much crap, but crap nonetheless. My sleeve tolerates everything but ice cream (including burgers, fries, corndogs {went to the fair} and Cookies. Haven't tried pizza yet bbut I'm sure it'll go down just fine). I wish my sleeve would reject all of these things and make the right choices for me but alas, I've figured out I have to make the decisions for my sleeve, not the other way around. I'm happy I can only eat 1/3 of an In and Out Burger, maybe 6 fries, maybe 1/3 of a corndog. Otherwise Id be gaining all I lost back. Hopefully when I get back home and all becomes normal again I will make better choices. At least I'm hoping...

    Snacks?

The fat content. I had a band and never worried about my fat intake for the day. Now all of a sudden since I got revised to the sleeve I have to track my fat (wasn't losing any weight at all the first couple months after revision surgery). Basically, when my NUT looked at my food log from my fitness pal she noted that I was having peanut butter or cheese every day and called them basically solidified fat and said I needed to drop them. I LOVE cheese and nuts so I still have htem in moderation (like a slice of cheese in my wraps for lunch) but miss just snacking on them. Then I stopped losing again and discovered that my sodium was over 3000mg a day with the food I was making to bring to work so now I have to watch that too. My snack options have just dwindled to where I have NO CLUE what to eat. No matter what my surgeon/NUT say I can't eat just 3 meals with no snacks, I get hungry.
  16. Woops your right -- I was referring to Dr Almanza NOT Alverez. So just so anyone reading this is clear.. Dr Almanza = BAD.. Alverez = GOOD. I'll revise the prior posts as well.
  17. I was Sleeved 12 Sep, feeling good, have another day to go before soft foods, can't wait to chew it (small curd of course). I'm a revision, had Lap band, the port flipped, no more constriction I was uncomfortable, had to lift bra to be comfortable, have lost 15 lbs since two weeks before surgery, if you are constipated try a Fleet supository. Sent from my SM-N910T using the BariatricPal App
  18. Hi Jeri, So glad to hear about you. I'm also having a revision from lapband to sleeve. People like you keep me going. Thanks, Linda

WHAT made you choose YOUR SURGEON?

My surgeon would take me. As a Revision, many surgeons didn’t want to touch another’s work. Especially since the other, very accomplished surgeon, is still practicing in the metroplex. I had no problems with the original other than no longer wishing to drive two hours in horrible traffic for every appointment and using a hospital so far from home. 12 years ago, when I got my band, that was the only option available. My PCP worked the phones until she persuaded someone local, that she trusted, to see me. And here we are!

    Looking for friends/support

Hi Kat! Trust me I understand the wait. But I will say bc of the complications and the time of my last revision band surgery and waiting on insurance to decide if they will pay for it I have learned soooooo much! And I'm thankful that it happened this way bc I'm a lot more prepared this time then I was the first time around. I'm learning to REALLY take it one day at a time. I wanted to have my band surgery so that I could be at a healthy weight to have kids. That was my goal. Well, after losing a little bit of weight and things just going so wrong less than 6 mths after surgery I gave up. Long story short I stopped going to my surgeon and decided to try to have kids first. I got pregnant the first try and ended up with a miscarriage. Then after my dr said it was ok we tried again and got pregnant again. Then miscarried again. Well I couldn't take it anymore and decided to hold off on that and started trying to do what I wanted to in order for me to b happy. And that's where I'm at today

    Band to sleeve - reflux

Hello, I have had the band for 12 years now. I did initially lose 80 pounds but have gained 30 pounds of that back. I have had no fluid in my band for a few years and still suffer horribly from restriction and re-flux, aspiration, heartburn.. list goes on. I have an appt in 2 weeks to see a surgeon who will hopefully take it out. I did find out that my insurance will only cover 1 procedure. So if I am wanting any type of revision then now is the time to do it. I am considering the sleeve but hoping that I dont still have all of the issues with re-flux and heartburn. Let me know how things go.
  23. Hi Juniper, I was in about the same situation. I got my band in 2012 and started having significant reflux last summer. I had my band unfilled which helped the reflux but I packed on 40 pounds. I went to Inova Bariatrics and talked about revision to bypass; they said I had to go through the whole program again, which I did. I did not have the supervised diet part and I continued to gain weight until I went on the 2-week liquid diet just before surgery. I had the band removed and the bypass done March 21. I have Federal Blue Cross and they approved as soon as I met the requirements, including cardiac clearance, primary care physician clearance, etc. I don't quite get where your diet supervisor is coming from; I had comorbidities in addition to the high BMI - reflux was one of them (high bp was the other). I think your doctor is right that the reflux should be enough because reflux is one of the signatures of the band. I wish I had known that in 2012 - I would have done the bypass then instead. If you stay with that practice you might be stuck (pardon the lapband pun) doing as the diet supervisor commands. Different practices have different rules. I like my practice very much but they're in Fair Oaks and Woodbridge, likely a huge trip for you. Remember, even though the pre-op diet is very difficult the reward will be worth it. You can do this!
  24. Brief background, got lapband about 11 years ago (starting BMI was 43). I did well and kept off 55 pounds (BMI 33)... until I started aspirating at night. I had a barium swallow which showed a distended esophagus and a endoscopy which showed reflux. Doc said band needs to come out. I had band unfilled, and as I expected, I've gained weight. I've gained about 30 lbs in the last 5 months (current BMI 38). I want to revise to a gastric bypass. I am well aware that I need surgical help to keep at a healthy weight. Prior to banding, and since being unfilled, I'm constantly hungry and never feel full. I finally felt "normal" with the lapband. When I'm not constantly hungry, I can maintain a healthy weight. But, even with the extra 30 lbs, my BMI is still not over 40, which as I understand it, would make insurance coverage easy. (I have Maryland CareFirst BCBS) My doctor has me doing all the things needed for insurance approval for the revision, including being on a supervised diet. But I'm gaining weight. This does not surprise me -- there was a reason I needed surgical weight loss in the first place -- but I'm getting mixed messages from my doctor and from my diet supervisor (who works for his office). Diet supervisor tells me that I'm less likely to get insurance approval due to my weight gain since being unfilled and being on the supervised diet. Doctor has made vague statements saying that the reflux found on the endoscopy may be enough to make it go through insurance successfully. Diet supervisor wants me to lose a significant amount of weight in the coming month, to try to offset my gains, by going on the pre-surgical diet early. Very honestly, I'm hesitant. If I do end up having to get up to a 40 BMI to have the surgery (12 more pounds...), I don't want to yoyo any more than I have to. And if the reflux finding will get me approved, I don't want to starve myself without the benefit of surgical help. Anybody been in any kind of similar situation? I can use any advice or commiseration available.
  25. Hi Az sunshine, I to am in the beautiful sunshine state, I live in Show Low in summer and San Tan Valley in winter. Where are you at? My surgery date isn't until the end of Oct as I am a revision from band to sleeve. Unfortunately my band eroded and could not be done at the same time. My Dr. will be Dr. Ponce De Leon and I am getting very excited about it and would love to have a local sleeve buddy, are you game? You can PM me if you like my name is Debbie.
