Just curious. How long before typically can you sit down and have a small portioned dinner with family. I'm not there yet, my surgery was on September 18th, gastric bypass. I think I miss that the most.

Are you getting the sleeve, bypass or a revision or would you like to talk about anything else? I'm understanding, my friend is getting a revision on the 24th and we've been focusing on other topics for now. These group can be the support you need... -
This sounds like a question for Chef Woody. Chef Woody was a restaurant chef who underwent RNY gastric bypass surgery. He then incorporated his knowledge of WLS into specific recipes. After surgery he became an avid bicycle enthusiast. He worked is way up in competitions and rode non-stop from one side of Indiana to the other. He said when he reached the other side of the state, he was totally out of energy and collapsed. I suspect he would know the answer. He probably told it to me but I forgot. He moved away and now lives in Florida. Here is a link to what I believe is his website. http://www.chefwoody.com

I'm a band to sleeve revision waiting for insurance approval but I've subscribed to both of your pages. Maybe I will make one as well

Wow! There is a world of difference in the Vitamin regime between the U.S. and Australia for individuals that undergo Gastric Bypass Surgery. I am not saying who is right and who is wrong, but if you begin to experience major health issues, the problem may lie in your vitamin intake. The following is the regime that I have been directed to take. 1. Three Flintstone's Chewable Multivitamins daily. (These contain my Iron requirement and I am taking these late at night to provide a 2 hour separation between my Calcium intake.) 2. 1500 to 1800 milligrams of calcium citrate. (This is my calcium requirement. I take Citracal. These are large pills and at the beginning I had to smash these pills because I couldn't swallow them whole. For best absorptions, I take these in 3 doses of approximately 500 mg spaced two hours apart. 3. 5,000 I.U. of Vitamin D3 daily. 4. 500 to 1,000 micrograms sublingual B12 daily or injection once monthly or Nascobol nasal spray once weekly. (I do the B12 injections once per month and my wife gives me these.) 5. 100 milligrams vitamin B1 also known as Thiamine daily. (At the 6 month mark, my doctor reduced the dose down to one vitamin per week.)

Sleeve over Bypass? Just curious as to what everyone's reason was?
-
I figured I'd post this here as I'm sure other veterans can relate. I was banded in 2008 and over the next year lost 106 pounds from 326 to 220. I was looking and feeling better than I had in years. Then the wheels came off. same old story divorce, lost job etc. caused me to lose focus, become depressed and of course cheat my band. fast forward to the present. I gained all the weight back and then some and finally decided I needed to go back and see the doc. I told him the band wasn't working so we agreed to unfill and try and revise to the sleeve. My insurance denied the request which was both a blow and a blessing. I've decided to give the band another shot and get back on the horse. I've had one fill so far and am seeing the nutritionist. Down 10 pounds in 2 weeks and have my mojo back. I came here to find support and encouragement as I start chapter 2 of my journey. This time I am sticking with it no matter what!

March Gastric Bypass Friends?
Ellf replied to EspeciallyKK's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The bypass forum does have a March buddies thread, but I've got mine coming in two weeks. -
Tomorrow will be my 1 year anniversary since my gastric bypass surgery. I have lost 86 pounds. I’m not going to lie, I honestly thought I would have lost more by now. Although weight loss has slowed down tremendously, I have yet to see a gain on the scale so I take that as a win. I would like to lose at least another 50 pounds so I have to remember this surgery is not a cure-all, it’s simply a tool. I’ve been extremely lucky and have had no complications whatsoever. I don’t experience dumping syndrome at all (well I did once when I ate some ice cream and have steered clear ever since) but other than that there really isn’t anything I can’t eat, I just eat a whole lot less. I can definitely be better about my diet, like always, but one thing I’ve incorporated into my life that has stuck is exercise. I don’t feel good unless I exercise so it’s become addicting (in a good way). Anybody who is reading this and contemplating this surgery, or is in recent post op and struggling, I have absolutely no regrets about having this surgery. The first 2 months were rough, but I got through it and so will you!

Do you revise from sleeve to RNY due to GERD?
TiredOfMyself replied to SeattleLady's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was sleeved October 2016. I had horrible reflux daily and was on several meds. I still gagged and vomited up acid daily. I also gained back 25 pounds I had lost. I was snacking all the time because if my stomach was empty I threw up. I had my revision last Monday, September 2019. So far so good. No reflux. -
Hang in there 2boys---there are some serious Disney Addicts on this forum---they can answer your question!!! I know a couple of friends from here, that go with regularity, and are both getting close to goal, and have had no adverse reactions from going. As for your port pier, I would discourage direct bouncing on it, let it be sure it is healed good and strong in there. But also as you lose weight, and it is closer to the surface, your kiddos will be growing up, and less likely to be bouncing on you----sad as it is! As for your direct question about rides--if you don't get much response--try reposting it with "rides" or "disneyland" in the title. A lot of people will see silly question and think someone is wondering about PB's again!!!! And while they need to know, some bypass those questions! Have fun in Disney, and enjoy those little ones while they are little!!! They grow fast! Kat

I talk with my dietitian often on phone. She's alway there for me. And I attend a local support group in my hometown once a month. The group is all bypass or band patients, some 4 years ago and myself, recently banded (Aug 6). Lots of wealth of information at each meeting and personal one to one talks. My dietitian also drives 1 hour and attends this meeting.

"Chemical" Stress Test....Weird!
Djmohr replied to bugsy72's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@bugsy72 Glad everything went well for you. I had a nuclear stress test in June and you are right that feeling when your heart starts racing is very weird but everything went good as well. I also am a hard stick when it comes to IVs. Especially when they use lidocaine to make it less painful. During both my bypass and my spine surgery in June they stuck me 8 times before they finally got a line in. I had surgery on Monday and warned them that lidocaine will make it worse for both of us. They had a anesthesiologist do it without the lidocaine and bam they got it on the first try. From now on I am going to tell them not to use lidocaine. The other good news is as you lose weight you end up with more veins for them to choose from which is great. Before my bypass they really stuck me in the same place every single time and that created years of scar tissue. -
Hi, all. I've finally reached my breaking point. I've done the Weight Watchers thing and regained the weight (more than once). I'm sure a lot of you know that old, sad story. My brother had gastric bypass; no way am I going there, but I've had my initial appointments/counseling about banding. I'm not sure whether to tell a lot of people. I'm inclined to not go there; I hate the judgmental looks/snarky comments. Funny, though, I did tell my boss, who is also a friend. When I did, her eyes lit up; she's considering it, too. I know my future holds diabetes, hypetension...I want to get a handle on it now while I'm still just a cranky, but fairly healthy, middle-aged woman rather than becoming a sick, feeble, bitter old woman. I'll have to self-pay. I'm not quite "fat" enough, and it seems silly to eat even more to reach the magic 40 BMI. Plus my insurance only does bypass, not banding. So, I'm a newby and looking forward to the advice and support I can get from y'all. I have one question for those of you who've done it and are into the normal eating part of it. How do you manage the work-related food functions and lunches w/ the office gang? How did you get over the "clean plate club" mentality? OK, that's two questions, but you know what I mean. Thanks. Kat

I saw your post and thought "did i write this?" So much of what you said, I've also lived. I've tried Atkins when it first came out in the 80's, WW, Nutri-System when you used to go to a center, dietician, South Beach, I've done them all. I would lose weight and then get tired of counting the points, want some cake, be like everyone else and then I would find that lost weight. I also moved pretty quickly through the WLS process like you. After finding out my insurance would only pay for lapband or bypass, I decided that I didn't have the 6 months to do a physician supervised diet for a surgery that I wasn't interested in. I wanted VSG. So I did my research and have surgery scheduled two weeks from yesterday. Am I scared sh**less? Absolutely! Not of the surgery but if I can do it. I do realize the surgery is a tool and I will have to do the work but there is still that fear that I am going to be the first person to say, "wow, the sleeve didn't work for me." It's time to break up with my best friend food. Will I know what to do? Well, I have an idea but won't know for sure until I am in that position. I have set myself up with supports through friends, this forum and will see a nutrionist when i return from surgery. Will it be easy? Probably not. Will it be worth it? Absolutely! I will be 44 two weeks after my surgery. I feel like it is a new beginning for myself. I went to get a passport picture taken yesterday. Horrified! Confirmation that this is what I need to do and that I never want to get another picture taken and be horrified at how it looks. I would love to keep in touch with you as we both go through this journey! Sue

Help - having a BIG wobble
gowalking replied to Tirnanog's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor insisted I get the gastric bypass. She said I'd never lose enough weight with the lapband. I knew I didn't want my insides re-routed and only wanted the band as it was the least invasive procedure. Obviously I proved my doctor wrong as I lost all my excess weight. And I don't mind telling you that I am smaller than she is these days. -
Called my insurance (UnitedHealth Care) and was told that though I have 2 more months I'm guaranteed surgery. I would be lying if I said I didn't break down crying! I had been freaking out about weight loss (or lack there of) and was told that it does not matter. Of course I don't want to gain more. It's just great to know that now I can breathe a little easier! Hoping these next few months fly by!!! I'm hoping to be bypassed by my bday Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Stomach pains!
James Marusek replied to dolphinkrazy22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Need a little more info. Did you have RNY gastric bypass surgery? How long ago was that? This doesn't sound like dumping syndrome. Generally with dumping syndrome you either throw up for a couple hours or you have an upset stomach that leads to diarrhea. Apparently others have experienced these symptoms. http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Weight-Loss-Alternatives/stomach-pains-after-gastric-bypass/show/602284 Might be related to a gallbladder attack. GALLBLADDER ATTACK SYMPTOMS specifically Please note that if you are in severe pain and particularly if your attack symptoms are accompanied by fever DO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. The following symptoms are typical of a gallbladder attack. * Moderate to severe pain under the right side of the rib cage * Pain may radiate through to the back or to the right shoulder * Severe upper abdominal pain (biliary colic) * Nausea * Queasiness * Vomiting * Gas * Burping or belching * Attacks are often at night * Attacks often occur after overeating * Pain will often but not always follow a meal with fats or grease * Pain may be worse with deep inhalation * Attacks can last from 15 minutes to 15 hours -

Hello Everyone, I'm on day 5 of the horrid pre-op diet. My removal of my lap band-turned to gastric bypass is on 9/28 at NYU with Dr. Bradley Schwack. I'd love any support I can get. I guess my biggest fear is that I won't lose the weight, though my close friend lost 190 pounds in 18 months! He is my inspiration. I'm looking for a good resource to tell me how to eat and what to eat to keep losing weight, once I'm done with the 20 days post op diets. Kind regards.

Hi there, I am scheduled for my surgery on July 1st (revision from lapband to plication) so I can answer alot of your questions. Two questions: 1) What is NSV? no scale victory - 2) Does anyone have extremely serious regrets for having the surgery? well even with having to have a revision on my band - I don't regret it - lost 170 lbs - gained back 50lbs due to an enlarged pouch - but will have the plication and get back to my lowest weight in no time. Hope this was helpful. Donna in Seattle surgery lap band 3/2003 - scheduled for plication on July 1st with OCC TJ 310/145/200 and counting down again!

LapBand with Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy ?
Guest replied to a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have not heard of either of these procedures, and wonder why a lapband would be needed with the sleeve surgery. I am a retired nurse, but I've been retired a number of years now and am not up on the newest things out there. I thought Gastric Bypass took quite awhile to complete, but I'm no expert. I think you will be better served by others on here that have more knowledge of present operations. __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com -
Hematoma after band to sleeve revision
JK90 replied to camkids's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my revision on 6/30/15 and they put a pressure dressing over my former port site to prevent this. It's just a clear tagaderm dressing over sterile cotton balls that keep pressure on the site so no fluid will form in that pocket that your port was in. I was told to leave it on until my two week checkup but if it fell off before that was ok. I showered every day and it didnt fall off until my appointment day and only because that was the first time I'd worn jeans since my surgery. I don't know if I could have handled what you guys went. Happy to hear that a lot of you have stopped having drainage. -
Banded X 5 Years = Tortured X 5 Years
CowgirlJane replied to bindi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had the crapband for 10 years. I had your same fears, but the sleeve has been terrific for me and I feel gettng the revision has been the best decision I have made in quite awhile. I have lost weight. Not saying it is easy, but the tool works like it should so you stand a chance at success. I don't vomit, slime, PB or whatever Bandsters are calling it these days I can eat normal foods - including veggies - and have been since about 2-3 months out, just small quantities. I am not hungry all the time. I spend a year working up the nerve to do the revision, wish i had done it sooner, but that year of thinking about it benefited me in other ways. I was informed, had researched it thoroughly and was READY. -
Having Trouble Getting Protein And Water
skane10 replied to angelofmercy36's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with the majority. You still have swelling and won't have much of an appetite. I focused on fluids and was able to get Protein in with Syntrax Protein powder. I'm 8 weeks out an still eat small portions. I sometimes wonder how patients with gastric bypasses are able to stretch their pouches out and gain the weight back. I'm utterly miserable if I eat more than 1/2 cup of food. Sent from my iPhone using VST
