Trying to get out of my head....

It's so hard isn't it! I'm glad you found a therapist, because it is absolutely a control issue. I would also suggest a different lunch. You could mix the hummus with greek yogurt for example, it would up the protein and volume and actual work on the hunger part. Your daily intake definitely doesn't look like enough for 2 workouts a day! I've printed out lists of protein snacks so that I can choose a higher protein=y option. If you will focus on anything, focus on your water and protein numbers to start. Another thought - are you taking anti-acids or ppis? If I don't take mine, I feel like I'm ravenous all day. I've read that the acidity causes our brain's response to make us feel like we are hungry. Finally, my loss is exactly like yours. down a bit... waits a bit... down a bit... waits a bit. I feel like I only "lose" every 10 days or so. It's bizarre! oh, and finally for sure On FB there's a group called Bariatric Beast. It's tough love but I've found the most direct and straightforward support there. No waffling hehehehe. Might be worth a look. Girl - YOU GOT THIS!

    Ugly, boring, and weak

Yeah, I have regained 10-15 pounds from my lowest, and it scares the crap out of me. But I have to admit my face looks a little less ghoulish. I am probably pretty lucky in that I don't have a wattle from losing my double chin (I'm also pleasantly surprised by how decent my arms look; I'm not wearing tank tops in public or anything, but I'm also not needing an arm lift). We've all seen people who have gone through this surgery and gained back most or all of the weight, and I'm terrified that if I take my eye off the prize, that will be me. I don't know if my rebound is from the malabsorption wearing off or because I've relaxed too much about food, but I don't like where I'm headed and I feel like I need to be more vigilant than ever. I've tried two therapists and they were no help at all... Unfortunately, it is really hard to find therapists who understand the struggles of bariatric patients.

    August Surgery Buddies!

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! It sounds like you’re prepared and have a wonderful support system. I had a gastric sleeve done 18 months ago but am now getting ready to have a revision (gastric bypass) on August 8th due to severe GERD. I wish I would have just had the bypass instead! Going through the two weeks of liquid diet can be tough but just keep your eyes on the prize! Swanson sipping bone broth is great to have on hand before and after surgery since it has a lot of protein. Remember to sip, sip, sip your water constantly after your surgery and get your bariatric vitamins ready (I take Barimelts.) I’ve rewatched a LOT of YouTube videos in preparation for my surgery; they’re very helpful and motivating. I know you’re going to do well! Be sure to keep us all updated! Best wishes!😁
  4. I had RNY in 1990 and regained all I lost. I always blamed myself but now know that the surgery failed due to a fistula between pouch and stomach. I didn't know that revision was even possible until 2020, just before the pandemic struck. I started the bariatric program in early 2021. I discovered that I am a food addict with trigger foods: sugar, wheat flour, rice, white potatoes, and processed food. I cut out those foods and the result was fantastic! I lost 70 lbs prior to surgery. Despite this success, I went ahead with laparoscopic revision surgery on 12/21/21 at age 73. I weighed 247 at the time of surgery, down from 317. Unfortunately, I fell in that very tiny group of bariatric surgical patients that develop serious complications. Ten days after my revision surgery, I was airlifted back to the hospital with peritonitis and sepsis, caused by a rupture of the jejunum below the anastomosis. I was hospitalized for 7 weeks and underwent three endoscopic procedures and two open surgeries before they finally found and corrected a residual abscess. I left the hospital with a 15-cm long open surgical wound, which took 8 more weeks to fully close. I am now fully recovered and am back to exercising daily. The endoscopic procedures stretched the new anastomosis so I have no more restriction than I had pre-surgery, so I still have to be very careful about what I consume. I typically go through month-long stalls and then drop a few pounds. I do lose inches during the stalls. I've dropped from size 32/4X to size 20/XL and now weigh 214 lbs., just past the 100 lb loss mark. After being on a restricted diet for over 16 months I struggle with near-irresistible cravings in the afternoon and evenings. The clinic wants me to limit intake to 800 calories. 😱 It is daunting because I know I will never be able to go on a "maintenance" diet and must continue to avoid my trigger foods forever. Even when I choose protein snacks in response to cravings, each snack adds 100 or more calories to the daily total so my daily calorie count is between 900-1200 calories. (I will gain weight at 1500 calories.) I've done a trial of weight loss drug CONTRAVE but had to discontinue due to side effects. This is a horror story, but don't let it dissuade you from your revision. Complications are extremely rare.
  5. I figured out how to do this finally. 1. On the Bariatric Pal website, sign off. 2. Intiate the sign on process but select the Forgot Password link. 3. Follow the process to reset (in my case, ceate) a password. This should be the same whether you registered with your Google, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or Twitter account. Trying to get out of my head....

No, I'm scheduled for sleeve in September, the 55lbs is total loss from my highest weight over the last 4 years with the last 10lbs being since my first meeting with the surgeon in April and trying to eat in a more "bariatric style" mindset, therapy, and more exercise.
  7. Hello everyone, I’m two months post op and I’m having a lot of trouble getting any food/liquid to stay in my system. I have tried just about everything and nothing seems to sit well with my stomach. From clear protein, protein shakes, jello, beans, soups, and much more. Some days I only get some water in and throw up everything else, other days I can keep down just a tiny bit of the protein. I’ve also tried spacing out my intake and drinking slowly and taking tiny sips or bites but nothing seems to work. I’m starting to get really worried because I’m feeling more nauseous than before. And I’ve recently started to get light headed and almost fainted today. Unfortunately my bariatric doctor is out for the next two weeks. Should I just go to a regular physician or clinic? Will they be able to help? I’m a bit hesitant since I’m so comfortable with my surgeon but I don’t think I should wait two weeks either. I may be overthinking going to another doctor
  8. It cost me £150 to see the surgeon for initial chat Then £150 for dietician and bariatric nurse chat Then £150 for psych evaluation rip off Then another £150 to see surgeon to set date Then it cost £10, 999 for operation package which includes 2 years follow up with dietician. I had to stay in 5 extra days at no extra cost
  9. Three years ago I was revised from VSG to RNY for GERD. I’m very pleased that I am still GERD free and no new problems (let’s hope it stays that way) Everything feels very normal now and I can barely feel any major difference from VSG let alone life prior to WLS. I know it’s different but I’ve settled in. I moved early 2021 so I’m establishing care with a new bariatric practice for continued yearly monitoring/testing. I don’t see a lot of revision postings by anyone as far out as I am, so if anyone is out there please let all know how it’s going and if anyone has questions feel free to ask ❤️

    Telling others

I have never lost a lot of weight before… so I hope it will be obvious;). I won’t care after it’s done telling people - just afraid of telling people before for some reason. Maybe it’s because I came close once before and the opportunity was taken from me (soap opera story) and I am scared this time something will happen again. I have insurance coverage for bariatrics this time so it should happen! I know I will need to say something for the time off after surgery so people will know by the time I have the date. I just don’t know when right now. I will have to go through an endoscopy in august, maybe then.

    Always Hungry?

I also felt a lot of hunger post surgery. Everyone told me I was wrong and wasn't actually hungry, but I know my body: I was hungry. I talked to my surgery team and they said it does happen to a small number of people - they don't lose their hunger hormone. My bariatric therapist said it's especially common in people with bipolar disorder, which I have. Eventually I was put on metformin and topamax, which have both helped. BTW, I was losing weight the whole time, and I had good restriction, but being hungry all the time was MISERABLE. Talk to your surgery center. There are options.
  12. The scale hasn't moved in about 8 days. I haven't gained this time, which I'm very happy about, but I haven't lost either. I fluctuate between the same 2 pounds (between 343 - 341). I have PCOS, and I was told that will make it harder and take longer to actually lose the weight and keep it off. But it's REALLY frustrating and annoying. It's harder to lose the weight now than it was when I was just doing keto. I read that we're not supposed to do keto after bariatric surgery, but MAN it's tempting!!! I know this will pass, I know this is normal, but I HATE that it's normal. I'm 2 1/2 months out from surgery, so I'm not surprised I'm getting hit again. But UGH!!!!!

    August Surgery Buddies!

The vaping thing is proving harder than I thought. I made it from 10am to 4pm today, and two hours of that was a nap. This is going to be tough. I'm going to leave it in the living room tonight when I go to bed. My meal plan for the 20th-25th is going to need some adapting - it's very meaty and I don't eat meat (just fish, eggs, dairy and veg). They said that was fine, but it's requiring a little more legwork from me. I'm thinking of making a little website for pescatarian bariatric patients, because there is NOT a lot out there. Especially because I have some food allergies, and it is a bear trying to find smoothies that don't have banana or avocado in them! I need to get it all planned out ahead or I'm going to struggle. I don't use cannabis at this time, but I'm glad your doc found something that worked for you!

    August Surgery Buddies!

Good for you! I've ordered my bariatric vitamins, pre-surgery drinks, protein powder and drinks. I'm getting nervous, too. I'll probably be second-guessing myself up to the last minute!
  15. Honestly, it's very hard here in the states to find bariatric-competent therapists too. I am just using the one from my surgery center, and it takes months to schedule an appointment with her. I really like listening to podcasts made by/for the bariatric community - Our Sleeved Life Podcast and Breaking down Nutrition with Dr. Susan Mitchell, and check out "the sleeved dietitian" on Instagram. She has a program called TRIBE. Good luck!
  16. Thanks so much. There isn’t much help here at all for psychologists specialising in bariatrics so I have to go further afield. Thanks for all the info :)
  17. You will not be able to use an out of state therapist, because they are not licensed in your state. It's very stupid, but in this country the practice of medicine and psychology is based on state licensure. You may be able to go to psychologytoday.com and use their search feature to find a bariatric therapist in your state. It can be anywhere in your state if you can do remote, but it can't be out of state, unless they happen to be licensed in multiple states. EDIT: Just realized you are in Ireland. US therapists will not be able to treat you due to licensure issues. HOWEVER.... you may be able to find one who will work with you as a "coach" which doesn't require any license. There is also an Australian bariatric therapist (Georgie Beems?) who sees clients virtually, maybe the licensing issues are different? Talk to your bariatric center and see if they can refer you to someone.
  18. Mine was an actual bariatric patient herself. She was very knowledgeable with the entire process and what to expect. I also had virtual visits, so she may take out of state patients. Deana D. Johnson Therapeutic Greenhouse 120 Sister Pierre Drive STE 506 Towson, MD 21204 (443) 991-8461
  19. Hi 👋 Now I know that my own “team” should have helped me with this. But they didn’t. Now that the world is a smaller place and consultations can happen online, does anyone have names of *reliable/responsible *well educated and certified Psychologists especially for us bariatric surgery patients? I didn’t see anyone pre-surgery and I know that I need to both address why I got so big - and - how to get over those issues - and - how to keep losing now. All of us have limited money, right?! I hate the idea of spending my kid’s college money (which is what any extra money we manage to save ultimately is), on a psychologist who sees one patient like me in a lifetime and has to look everything up before I get to her and after I leave. You know what I mean? It also can’t drag on forever.. I just don’t have the means to be going for more than six months or so. Ideas for across the globe welcomed ❤️ Xx Lorna

    Full Nutritional Chart Info

Talk to your surgeon/dietician. If you have high blood pressure, they may recommend you reduce sodium below the generally recommended 2000mg a day, but it's not strictly a concern for people who are not sensitive to salt. None of the dieticians I've talked to about bariatric surgery has recommended any draconian limitations on salt. They haven't even mentioned sodium - just macros. I don't worry about sodium OR fat, just sugar, simple carbs, and protein. For constipation, it's unlikely you will be able to eat enough fiber to solve the problem with food. I was told that drinking enough fluid, exercising enough, and taking something like Miralax was what I should do. I have found that I only need Miralax occasionally as long as I drink coffee.

    Almost 9 years out...

I am on a facebook group "Bariatric Nutrition with Dr. Susan Mitchell" and recently she posted an article from a peer-reviewed journal that said there wasn't much evidence for not drinking after you eat long term. However, I find it hard to drink when I'm really full. I never wait after drinking to eat - my surgery center never said that was an issue. Congratulations on maintaining so long! That's amazing! For the anemia, see what the specialist says. What did your GP say? Iron needs to be taken at least 2 hours apart from calcium. And it might upset your stomach. There are preparations that are better (slow iron). You might try to get back in touch with your surgeon, too, if possible, but you seem to be doing great on your own. It's inspirational!
  22. Hi, had ESG 6/29 and although it went very smoothly and I feel great, I have been crabby about liquid diet. I have been HUNGRY. I tried to find research about the healing process and justification for the full liquid diet for 2 weeks after ESG, but can't find anything at all. It just seems as though we are following more or less the same protocol as post-bariatric surgery, although I think the trauma to the stomach and healing period should call for something significantly less drastic. Especially since I am doing so well. Nonetheless, I have stuck with it, with the exception of allowing myself some hummus. I've lost a modest 8 pounds, but who wouldn't with no food and about 500 calories a day for 16 days! Now, my big concern is that of course I will gain weight after switching to a soft diet even if I follow it precisely, which will really be demoralizing. It's all had me rather irritable and I'm so curious to know others' experiences along this line.

    Losing mind battle

I agree with finding a support group and therapist. It can be very hard to find a bariatric therapist, but check with your surgery center, they should have someone, but they might be booked out quite a ways. There is T.R.I.B.E, but I don't know too much about it. If you're on instagram it's "the sleeved dietician" and her group. There are also some good podcasts like "Our Sleeved Life Podcast" and Bariatric Nutrition with Dr. Susan Mitchell (Dr. Susan Mitchell has a facebook group that is nice). Good luck!

    Dread Eating

I found it hard to eat for several months after surgery. I learned that it really depends on what I eat. For example, ground meat and fish/shellfish are very easy for me to eat, but chicken breast is impossible. I can only eat 1-2 oz and it sits like a lump in my stomach and hurts. Try different things: beans, deli meat, cheese, etc, to see if that helps. Try taking smaller bites, slowing down, chewing more. Try keeping a food log to see when you have these problems more - see if it's after certain foods or certain times. Talk to your nutritionist and surgeon, and maybe even a bariatric therapist. Good luck!
  25. This! I have so many extra protein powders and bariatric soups... Etc. for the soft food stage just sitting there. Ugh. What else did I wish I knew before my first surgery? I wish I did the bypass first. Sent from my SM-S908U using BariatricPal mobile app
