Sleeve vs. bypass revision
Shaunie replied to onmyway11's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had bypass after band removal and depending on your surgeon I think its not a concern. My surgeon made sure the cut was in a spot that would not be of concern. I think also it depends on what the extent of your damage is after removal of the band. I was recommended to heal at least 6 months after removal before gastric. I didn't have the procedures back to back. Good Luck :-) -

Looking towards a November surgery date
GrandmaJan posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! I'm Janice aka Grandma Jan. I started my journey on June 30th and have been plugging through all the requirements of my program. I am so thankful to have found the team at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield IL. I was cleared last week by the psychologist, have 1 more visit with the nurse practitioner and have started my nutrition and physical therapy. Looking to be done with those by the middle to end of October. I'm excited, nervous and anything else I can think of. I will be 55 on Saturday and this is the best thing I can do for me! I have 7 grandkids and I want to be there for them and be able to attend all their sporting events and take them places without being unable to walk or get short of breath. I am happy to have found these forums. Even though we are all different it's awesome to be able to listen to everyone's stories both pre and post op. [sharedmedia=trackers:tickers:25125] -

I'm just a year out but couldn't be happier. I have a lot of restriction still and eating is almost like following a checklist to get my Protein and calories in. My BMI is now 22.9 and they don't want me to lose anymore. I have a medical background and did not want a surgery that changed my anatomy so drastically. The sleeve maintains normal anatomy including important valves (pyloric valve) of your stomach. My surgeon found that some of his bypass patients were able to force food past the small pouch and into the small intestine because there is no functional valve anymore. I would recommend the sleeve and consider a revision if you don't lose all you want. But some of us reach goal and beyond. (I weigh 12 lbs less than my original goal) -

Hi all. I am all set and ready for gastric bypass surgery on December 1. I have lost 8 pounds on the first 5 days of the 2 week pre op diet. My diet is mostly high Protein, vegetables and fruit. Not to bad. I WILL struggle on Thanksgiving day and I already told my doctor that I WILL be eating stuffing on that day. I am nervous, anxious, excited about the surgery and it is approaching fast. Current as of this morning is 291, 44 Jeans. Goal is 175 and jean size ???? 34? I am very active and getting this extra 100 pounds off will be life altering. I look forward to following this group forum. John

Discomfort/Pain Post Surgery
BabySpoons replied to FmrFluffyGuy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I stopped taking pain meds after week 1. I still had pain week 2 but it was bearable. I had gastric bypass and hernia repair so YMMV. The pain didn't go away completely for weeks but was more like twinges depending on what I was doing and how I moved. Nothing that needed continued pain meds . GL -
Will I regain the weigth?
Threetimesacharm replied to Canadian lady's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well yes you could regain weight; the surgery only helps you eat smaller portions it does not chose the food you eat. As someone who has had the sleeve and now the bypass I suggest you go with bypass, personally I believe it has better weight keeping off abilities than the sleeve. You shouldn't be hungry in fact I have a hard time consuming my calories as I really don't feel like it. With the sleeve I was never really hungry and I had it for 3 years. If you research how the surgeries are performed the bypass has rerouting that has a major effect on the stomach hunger hormone(I can't explain it would be better to read about it). Good luck in your decision. -
Band Removed Due To Erosion: Should I Get Another?

I think with a history like that you might be better off opting for a different type of surgery, sleeve or bypass. -
Cash prices in the US for Bypass
thatch replied to heyheymaggiemay's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, I had VSG instead of bypass but the cost isn't that different where I am (Birmingham, Alabama). I paid about $12,500 out of pocket for my surgery. Good luck! -

Introducing Myself- Surgery Jan 21
Begin Again posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just wanted to introduce myself. I've been reading the forum and have found it really helpful. I will be having the Gastric Bypass surgery on the 21st. I've started the liquid diet today. I love the success stories, I was not successful with the band, it slipped and it leaked and was never restrictive. I worry the Bypass won't work for me either but am hopeful. It seems from reading here that the keys to success are exercise, Water and Protein. I have a sedentary job and when not working, I am studying (also sedentary). I am very out of shape and just not capable of doing even the most basic exercise programs. I'm wondering if anyone has tips on how they came from being very sedentary, out of breath and sweating over minimal physical activity to 45 minutes a day of physical activity. My daughter wants me to do a 5k in August with her, it's a color run so not really a race. I think it's possible.- 4 replies

Obese since early childhood
KimTriesRNY replied to Medowsweet's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have also been obese since childhood. I remember being on and off diets since the age of ten or eleven. I do get hungry but not in the same way as before surgery. I am not constantly thinking about what things I am going to eat and my cravings for most foods are gone. I do still occasionally crave things but the compulsion to give in and buy them is much less and easy to resist at this point. I felt bypass was right for me as I have been obese my whole life that I can remember. -
I gave up, My insurrance company said they do not cover any kind of weight loss, pills, Gym memberships, or any type of W/L surgery. My husband called and complained, because we have insurrance through the union. He told them I work my butt off for the union and we can't even have good ins. He said fine my wife will just have to rack up a bill for ins to cover with all her health issues. One month later, We got a letter today- Says as of Jan 2007 we now cover Gastric Bypass types of surgery. YES!!!! :) :Banane33: :D :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) So now 6 months of supervised diet and excercise and we are set.

Hello All! This Is My First Time Here So Here Is A Little About Myself!
ShrinkingMama posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi all! My name is Carisa and I live in New Jersey. I'm a proud police officers wife for 4 years now and we have 2 AMAZING children! My daughter Ava is 3 1/2 and my son Joey is 22 months. My family is my WORLD & my everything and the main reason why I'm going to have VSG. I'm a stay at home mom and although everyday isn't rainbows & cupcakes I wouldn't have it any other way! So, let me tell you how I got to where I am today. I was not overweight as a child nor a teenager. In high school i was 140 lbs throughout those 4 years. No matter what I ate I never gained a pound! And let me just tell you that I did eat everything and anything I wanted. My family is Italian and as many of you fellows Italians know, everything we do revolves around FOOD! Anyways, after high school I got into a bad relationship and I think thats when I started to gain weight. We would eat CRAP food at 3am at least 3 times a week. I was never one to work out. Honestly, I hate any kind of exercise. So anyways, I finally get out of that relationship and in the end of that I probably gained 40-50 lbs. I did weight watchers a few time but I never lost a real significant amount of weight. Then, in October of 2007 I met my husband. By the time I got pregnant with my daughter, I was 200 lbs. (BTW, I'm about 5'6) So, while I was pregnant, I did what any other pregnant woman does. EAT! Plus, during the last 3 months of my pregnancy, I was on STRICT bed rest. When I was about 25 weeks I started going into labor. They put me on medication to stop the labor and the bed rest. They gave me steroid injections to increase the babies lung development in case she did come premature. So the bed rest didn't help the weight gain since I was only allowed to get up to go to the bathroom. Well, I gave birth on January 15, 2009 to a beautiful, healthy (FULL TERM)baby girl, weighing in at 240 lbs . I think I lost about 25 lbs afterwards. Definitely not the whole 40 lbs. Then, I tried Weight watchers ( again) , Jenny Craig, diet pills, etc. Once again, never lost anything significant. 22 months later on November 14,2010, I gave birth to my son. ( NO BED REST THIS TIME) I only gained just about 20 lbs during this pregnancy.(THANK GOD) So now I'm back to 240. So here I am, with 2 kids, heavier then I have EVER been. So again, I loose about 20 lbs. Tried weight watchers (YET AGAIN), diet pills again, jenny craig again, Overeaters anonymous, hypnosis slim fast, etc. NOTHING HELPED. This summer we took the kids to Hershey Park. I wanted to take my son a ride and they made me get off because the seatbelt wouldn't fit around me. That just KILLED me. That was, I think, the straw that broke the camels back. Obviously nothing else was working so I decided I needed to do something drastic. So here I am, sitting here weighing 255 lbs. After going to 2 other doctors ( & seminars) I finally found my surgeon. And I LOVE HER! In the beginning, I had FULL intentions of having LapBand. However when I went to meet with Dr. Schrope (my surgeon) and she told me how much better results she has seen with the VSG and that so many people come back to her with the lapband and say " Get this out of me" and then do the VSG. There was just so many things that I really didn't want to deal with, with the lapband. The only thing I was really worried about with the VSG was the surgery itself because I've never had any kind of surgery. Like she said, if I'm going to do this, do it right the first time. So thats what I'm going to do! And I'm super excited! I'm meeting with the nutritionist next week, have to get the blood work, endoscopy, etc. I can't wait to start my journey to my new life!! My family deserves the best "ME" , and so do I!! Thanks for hearing my story!! Carisa -
Sleeve VS RNY (Any advice welcome!)
Sosewsue61 replied to Road2Newme3's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You are young - any children in your future? Because the bypass will take a toll on your body nutrient wise, especially during pregnancy. And that unused stomach can get reflux and ulcers - how is that to be treated, can't get medicine to it orally. My nurse at my PCP - now has this 7yrs out from bypass plus B12 deficiency. -
I'm considering going from a sleeve ( i have a leak) to a Bypass.
losinghope15 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've had a leak almost 9 months now. They have tried everything, sometimes more than once, I go to a large hospital in Seattle. I had a consult last week with a bariatric surgeon and after talking with him, I am really considering getting the "fix it surgery" or Bypass, because I am not healing and I have very little quality of life. But my gastro doc says "just be patient, i'm confident it will heal." As of now I have a PICC line (3rd one) for food. I haven't eaten in a month in a half and the month before that only a few bites of Beans a few times. I am so hungry!!! Of course, my family has to eat so I have to smell food every night and I want to cry. I have a drain tube (the 3rd one) coming out my back. Have lost 2 jobs and was recently given one back, but is now rocky because I can get sick at any given time and they know that. I have went to work a few days then been hospitalized several times and back out for approx. 2 months at a time. I am in pain almost always, have been on pain meds almost every single day. I have been hospitalized probably 10 times ( 5 hours away from my family so no one is ever able to be there with me). The longest stay almost a month. I have to go back (5 hours one way) every couple of weeks and sometimes we have to borrow money for gas just to get there. I has ruined us financially. I do have insurance but I have racked up at least 350,000 dollars in hospital bills. There were months we could not afford dinner for our kids. I can't sleep but a few hours at a time. I try to work 3 days a week just to keep the lights on and food in the fridge, but its obviously very uncomfortable as I am a nurse and on my feet all day. I have very little family support, just my husband who has taken about 6 weeks of time off work to take me back and forth to Seattle (he worries about his job) . In fact, it has ruined several relationships in my family. My parents only live 10 miles away, young and healthy (at least my mom, my dad does have med prob), and they have not showed up one time to ask if I need help while my husband is gone 50 hours a week working. That hurts the worst. I could probably go on and on as you can imagine, but I want people to see how bad it has been for me going through this as I am sure many of you can relate. I was told the bypass was an option from the beginning. But I did not want that, so I think I have been strong and held out for a long time before considering the fix it surgery, or Bypass. I just feel I cant do this much longer. And now my gastro doc wants me to go back to Seattle to have open surgery for a feeding tube in place of the picc line in a few weeks. So this is obviously far from over. This will be my second feeding tube. The bariatric surgeon and his partner act like this is a good idea at this point. Yes, of course they say my chances of complication increase because its a fix it or revision surgery, at about 5%. They seem confident I can have a successful surgery and heal and be back on my feet in about a month. I just need advice, comments, if you have done it and are you happy you did? I am afraid, and I have seen this story on this site where someone went through similar things and still had to have the bypass and of course, says don't go through this for too long because you may end up having to have it anyway. How is the bypass different in the way of eating and quality of life versus the sleeve. My gastro doc said it took one patient a year and a half to heal, but she did. Of course she was much older than me, but still I CANNOT IMAGINE LIVING LIKE THIS FOR 9 MORE MONTHS!!!! Thank you so much, I really need the support and information on this big decision. -
Hi there! Yes, your doc should be able to take care of it during your bypass procedure. When I had lap band put in several years ago I had a hiatal hernia repaired during that surgery, and I had another one repaired this time during bypass. makes healing take a little longer, but you'll be no worse for the wear!

Hello! I'm 2 months out and I'm experiencing the same thing! I was bypassed 04/04/2019 and since then i've lost lots of weight but the pounds seem to drop all at once for a week or even less and then stall for two or three weeks, then drop a bunch in a week and then stall again for 2-3 weeks. I feel like all the weight i've dropped was in like 2 weeks total and the rest of the 2 months was just stalls. I think it's normal though, as long as we're losing weight in the end. I feel you, though, it's very frustrating. I'm 21 so yeah it may be our age too. Good luck!

Considering which surgery to choose
MVP18 replied to MVP18's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
So, had a physical therapy preop eval today with goals set. Next week is a mandatory surgeon informational group meeting, followed by a nutrition 101 class, and an individial nutrition appointment. At this time, I still dont know which surgery to choose. I hope to have my questions answered at the surgeon group meeting. I feel like the PT tried to talk me into bypass vs sleeve. When I had a medical eval a few weeks ago with a nurse practitioner, I feel like she was pushing me towards bypass vs sleeve as well. I guess they see the outcomes more than I do. What do you guys think? -
Considering which surgery to choose
Erica_is_pretty replied to MVP18's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My thoughts exactly. I'd rather not go under the knife again which is why I'm 99% sure I'm going to pursue bypass.
