Antidepressents Pre Or Post Op
Izuri replied to jaxtr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm still only 5 weeks post-op, but I still am taking my mood stabilizer. I have actually thought about increasing it. My psychiatrist said that we have plenty of room to increase since I'm on a low dose, and she would be willing to add an anti-depressant if needed. She has treated quite a few post-op patients and said she knows hormones go wacky and even if we do need to increase, she thinks eventually I'll level back out. My mood the first few weeks was pretty stable. Last week it hit a low like I hadn't had in quite a while, and then this week I'm stable again. I think my hormones are going crazy though - I have had at least 2 periods in the last month and had issues in between each (sorry if tmi) so I think this has been the culprit since pre-surgery I was stable on my medication for over a year. I would not, absolutely not, go off your medications unless you have talked to both your surgeon and your psychiatrist/doctor prescribing them. Some medications have an awful withdrawal, some can have side effects if you stop them abruptly (like rebound depression, etc), and it's never a good plan to immediately stop something without talking to your physician. Maybe you can talk to them about tapering the dose down or something, but immediately before a big surgery is not the time to be screwing with meds imo. I just don't want you to have any problems/increased depression after. Also - if you are worried about tablets/capsules/etc - many medications come in liquid/chewable/dissolveable form. You can absolutely keep taking them post surgery and don't have to crush up those tablets because they taste horrible, just ask your pharmacist, most times they will be happy to help. -
Please don't get mad at me for asking! For me, for my whole life, throwing up is one of the worst things for me, ever. It is the worst sensation and just thinking about it makes me shudder. I do anything to avoid it. Thankfully I am not squeamish. But I've had to stop taking certain meds that cause severe nausea because of it, including some pain meds. Same with a couple foods. I just can't enjoy them at all. Is throwing up with a sleeve more painful? Is there more dry heaving? What food in tolerances have you developed that have caused vomiting? The vomit issue was one of the reasons why I choose not to go with the RNY. Puking very often, especially in the beginning, would be horrible. Sent from my DROID RAZR using VST

As promised keeping you guys updated day 2 seemed pretty easy, minimal headache and lots of energy. I work the evening shift and for some reason when I got home at 10pm I was starving!!! I literally got up out of bed at around 1 am and emptied my fridge so there were NO distractions. sleepytime decaf tea has been helping knock me out at night. I am on day 3 and already down 3lbs!!!! No headache stomach, growls here and there but I'm sticking to it!!! I more week to go!!! Oh tmi maybe but going to the bathroom has become harder as expected "/

1 week post-op nausea, hot flashes, no energy
Luna13 replied to Cober1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi there! I had my surgery on the same day! Not having those symptoms. I had some other problems tho the MD said it was the same. Also I started my Vitamins today so that may contribute on my TMI issue. I cant believe you're going back to work already. My MD wont let me go back for 2wks I think you just have to keep moving. When I sit for to long I also get real tired! Best of luck! -

I'd add "leaks" constipation and TMI, ladies and boobs. And I second the suggestion that the links should be sent with the welcome email. -
Okay I hate to admit this but I started drinking coffee again. Just a cup, maybe a cup and a half a morning. I am 9 weeks out from being sleeved. How I started back is I thought it would help stimulate a BM for me (sorry for the TMI) which was desparately needed. It worked but then came back the addiction. Anyway, my problem has been that I always enjoyed half/half in my coffee with a little honey. Well.... I have tried to drink fat free half/half but can not stand it. Anyone have any ideas. Is there any flavor creams that are not full of sugar and fats. I also have tried those fake sweeteners like stevia, sweet n low, ect. The after taste is dreadful to me, maybe not a flavored creamer but as a sugar substitute. Any suggestions or am I going to have to quit it all over again. I so love my one cup a day. I do not feel like it is really that bad and I am not big on sweets at all but I really want to maximize my potential to lose rather than hinder it with this morning fix. Thank you. Any replies appreciated!

I am 2+ years post sleeve. How much is too much water in a day? I find that if I’m not drinking ~3L/day or more, I get headaches and feel terrible. To do this and also not be drinking during/around meals, I am constantly drinking through out the day - and also constantly peeing. Sorry if TMI. Lately my PCP doctor made me feel like that is unusually high. The national academies recommendation is 3.7L for adult men per day. Just wondering if there is an upper limit for Bariatric patients. I hear 64oz thrown around here but that seems low to me as a long term goal, perhaps something to aim for closer to surgery day - I would be dehydrated on that little at this point....especially if I’m regularly exercising. How much water do you drink per day?

20 days and things aren't "moving"...
twinmomC posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry, TMI, but troubled, terrified actually. 20 days post RNY. Came out with flying colors, walking super-star, all in all felt/feel great until recently. Haven't been able to poo on my own (without Milk of Mag, suppository, smooth move tea) in 3 weeks. I've made it happen a total of three times. Down 17 lbs since surgery, not sure how that is possible, but anyway... I have a very sore bum and am seeing a local general surgeon tomorrow (my WLS surgeon is about 2.5 hours away) to take a look at it and see if he can help (super excited about this- NOT!) Thrombosed hemmer!! If you don't know, you don't want to. If you DO KNOW, it is one of the worst pains ever!! This "problem" hurts worse than the surgery itself So... How after WLS do we get things working again? I do NOT want to become laxative dependent, but cannot live like this either. What do you do to get the Fiber in?? Anything else anyone knows to prevent the painful, unpleasant, fire and shredded glass/razor pain, please share. I was hoping for improvement, not a complete halt. Suggestions?? -
I was sleeved April 23rd and have pretty much had a steady decline with the exception of one stall. I have started running and lifting weights, I am still only eating around 750 calories a day and all of a sudden a gain 1.5lbs. Maybe TMi, haven't gone #2 in a week, getting all my water. What am I doing wrong?

Obsessed with weight loss
NixNichi replied to crawford8903's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think at first we all like to keep getting on the scale. I know I did! But it's not good to weigh everyday! Weight fluctuates so much it's better to just keep it to a schedule! (Like tmi but you weigh one thing then you take a big poop and boom you're a pound less! You didn't really loose a pound but the scale says you did) I would pick something like weigh every two weeks and continue to give it your all with diet and exercise! The weight will come off your clothes will start to fit looser it just takes time. I mean we didnt gain it all in one day we cant loose it all in one day.(But man would that be nice?) Ok, maybe this is tmi but I am really concerned and hope you can help. This morning I woke up with the sudden urge to throw up. I got out of bed and ran to the restroom. I threw up what looked like bits of raisins. Small and black in color. Last night I had some water before bed and dinner I had some plain yogurt. I had nothing with color. I feel okay now, but it was ugly and kind of scary. Any thoughts??? BTW... I'm six weeks post op if that helps.

No, you dont need to cut your workouts, logically you KNOW that's not fat lost and gained. Its Water fluctuations, when you're constantly tearing your muscle tissue and it has to repair, it gets bigger, yes, but it also holds Fluid in the process. That's why people gain weight when they start at the gym, not because they've gained 3kg of muscle in 2 weeks. I'm a bit the same, its just hard to see weight go up no matter what the reason. I have a temporary ileostomy at the moment, so I produce lots of very liquid poo (lol, TMI but its kind of on topic) and I really battle dehydration issues as a result. So how nuts is it that I feel "good" on the days that my weight is under 60kg (which is dipping down into a BMI of 18) as a result of dehydration and "bad" on days when I've manaed to eat a dietary combination to thicken things up and retain more fluid in my body and thus weight a kg or two more? Logically I know that the amount of fat on my body has not changed, but my mood can still be dictated by what I see on the scale. I'm scary thin at the moment and I should Celebrate any gain. Likewise, exercise is only going to improve your health and weight loss results in the long run and you do NOT need to cut it back to lose weight. ITs the fat you lose that matters, not what the scale says. Perhaps its just better to not look, although I can never resist.

All I want to do is cheat on my diet
NovaLuna replied to 90’schild's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck with that. After surgery you may not be able to digest that. I can't have xanthan gum it messes with my stomach and... well, it's TMI, but it gives me gas and diarrhea. Before surgery I had no issue. Now I avoid it like the plague! They're post op so they may want to approach it with caution... -
Lol .. TMI hahaha

Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
Band07 replied to snowkitten's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I will be four months out on the 23rd. I had a rough start not because of the surgery itself but because I got pneumonia and became serverly dehydrated was basically miserable the first month. That being said, I've lost 30 lbs (which puts me 10lbs from my goal) It's slow but that's expected. I can eat anything/everything and my portion size is really much larger than it should be for someone who has had 3 surgeries! But it's the mgb that keeps me losing. Nothing and I mean NOTHING I eat stays with me too long. I'm in the bathroom A LOT! sometimes as many as 8-10x a day. It's worse when I make bad food choices but really with a 9' bypass even good foods pass through pretty quickly. I've asked others and not everyone expereinces this and it's not really dumping (though I have had that too) because I don't get sick with it or sweat or stomach cramps at least not often. Hope this isn't TMI but it's worth knowing I think because I wasn't prepared for it to be like this! I will try to answer any specific questions you have... Who is doing you surgery? -
Please help me understand the difference
NovaLuna replied to laurenantics's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch is the original. SIPS/SADI-S/Loop DS is the new version. The new version was created to mitigate some of the issues with the original i.e the diarrhea issue as well as lessen the malnutrition issue (still higher risk compared to Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve, etc, but better statistics than original DS). However, the downside is you have slightly less calorie and fat malabsorption, statistically slightly less weight loss, and there isn't enough long term data to tell how patients are doing 10-20 years post-op, but that data is available for the original DS. However, statistically SIPS still has a higher weight loss percentage then Gastric Bypass even if it doesn't beat out the original DS. In the end it comes down to 1. if your surgeon even performs the SIPS version of the surgery (which is actually easier for them to perform then the original) 2. if your insurance even covers the SIPS surgery because some insurances consider it 'experimental' due to the lack of long term data and 3. which surgery you actually want. I chose the SIPS/SADI-S/Loop Duodenal Switch for myself because I didn't fancy having to deal with diarrhea all the time. Didn't expect that I'd have to deal with constipation issues at times and my system trying to empty itself at others (at least twice a week my stomach is like "ohhh you're going to be in the bathroom for a WHILE" and I literally empty everything out. Diarrhea still happens on those days. TMI, sorry, but I thought you'd want to know all the nitty gritty stuff to help make your choice). Also, there is something like a 3% you will develop either Celiac Disease or a Wheat allergy. That's for any malabsorbative surgery (DS, SIPS, or Gastric Bypass) and they don't TELL you that. I developed a wheat allergy. I was tested for it after I had classic symptoms of dumping syndrome after I was TOLD that wasn't possible. I tested positive for a wheat allergy. Anyway, it's unlikely it'll happen to you, but I tell people because a 3% chance means 3 out of every 100 people so it's worth mentioning and I'm irritated that they DIDN'T mention it! I still would have had the surgery, but I would have like to KNOW! Also, they didn't tell me that it's possible to vomit old blood after the surgery. Again, doesn't happen to everyone, but it happened to me and scared the SH*T out of me! I was still in the hospital and panicked and the nurse came in took one look at the blood in the bag and was like "It's old blood. You're fine." and then walked out. Like WTF?! Anyway, I'm almost 16 months post-op with the SIPS so if you do decide to go that route feel free to ask me any questions about my own experience and I'll do my best to answer. Hope things go well for you at your appointment! -
So What Exactly Is "normal Eating?"
LouiseC replied to NMJG's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am not quite at goal, my own goal that is (I passed the surgeons goal a while ago) but I am just 3 kilos away and pretty much consider myself in maintenance mode for the most part. I am waiting until the two year point to have plastics for the excess skin and will also likely get my boobs somewhere back up near my chest at the same time :-D sorry for the TMI but they are shockers these days! I estimate about half the weight I want still to lose is in skin and I am really comfortable with carrying these three kilos for a few more months if need be. So, what was I saying? Lol. Treats. I have them, usually a couple of times a week. When I do it is likely to be a sweet and I have a new found love of ice cream. I can easily eat half a cup and then I am happy. It is strawberry season here so lately it has been strawberries, though only about three or four, chopped up with half a cup of real vanilla. I buy good quality ice cream. I buy good quality food period. If there is an occasion at work then I will have a little bit of cake or cookie or whatever is on offer. Again, it is a single serve and I factor in the calories and know I need to burn them. I rarely eat chips, if I want the savoury Snacks I will go for nuts these days or spicy roasted chick peas. I also enjoy tamari roasted sunflower and pumpkin seeds. I drink wine frequently. I don't consider it a treat but rather part of a 'normal' diet. We often have a glass with dinner and I just factor it in. Occasionally I will have more, drinks with friends or family occasions. Again, I factor it in and work it off. I watch those I consider 'normal' healthy eaters very closely. I am consciously changing my behaviours, habits, and ultimately my relationship with food. I do not even for a moment consider the notion of eating anything I want to be 'normal'. This isn't normal. And it isn't healthy. It may be common, it may even be the usual for many. But it isn't normal to me not by a long shot. -
Last night, my husband decided he wanted Subway. So I went and got him a sandwich, and I got me a salad. I ate all the little short chicken strips (I think there was about 5). And then I had about 5 bits of lettuce and cheese. I all of a sudden got a pain in my chest, so I stopped eating. I started pbing and that was not giving me any relief. Most of the stuff that was coming up was just spit, but sometimes had some lettuce. (sorry for the tmi) I took a shower and let the hot water hit my chest, and that helped. I sat down in bed for about 5 mintues. And then got back up and here it came. My husband had fallen asleep. I threw up so hard and loud that it woke up my husband. I did it about 3 or 4 times. I can tell my pouch is irritated, so I am doing liquids today. Do I need to call my doctor to make sure I didn't do any damage?

Yes, I'm happy, no regrets so far. Haven't had my labs done though but I am taking my Vitamins. The weirdest thing for me is that even though most days I literally have no restriction and can eat average portions, sometimes i get stuck and it feels exactly like it did with the band! Small bites and chew chew chew has always been a struggle for me that sounds good to me as long as it works, I expect life change with wls and I'm prepared for it, I have no problem chewing or staying on mash foods forever lol, do u feel hungry at all?
