    Weight Regain After Gastric Sleeve

    I am also part of the regain club. I have gained 32 pounds over the past 7 months. It’s the most annoying thing but entirely my own problem. It all started when I began grazing throughout the day, which my surgeon told me would cause weight gain. I started eating carbs with no restraint. I began drinking sodas daily after 3 years of drinking them like 1 time a month. I started using straws and starting eating whatever I wanted. I have started the 5 day pouch reset diet and have lost 4 pounds so far due to the liquids only phase. Hoping that after these next few days I will have better restraint and I WILL be watching what I am eating- protein first, veggies second and carbs third. No more sodas daily! Back in the gym at least 3 times a week. I know we can get the weight back off, we know exactly what it takes.

    I get how you feel about weight gain after surgery. It messes with your head and negative thoughts and feelings about your weight/yourself creep back into your life. What do you do now? Take care of yourself and start again. Choose the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. I hate the term fail. This is an opportunity to start over in the new year.Don't beat yourself down. Talk to yourself more positively. We are all a work in progress. None of us are perfect. Focus on each 24 hours. What are going to do today to eat healthy and boost your activity. The sum of small efforts repeated day in day out will get you to your goal. Don't be afraid to ask for help. A consult with your dietician. Might be getting your mind set with weight loss or other issues straightened out. Counseling may help. We are here for the struggle. Be strong and press on!

    Hey ya'll, So I was terrified to get on the scale because I was afraid that I would no longer be in Onderland, but I am happy to say that I caught it just in the nick of time. I weight in yesterday at 199.7!!!! Talk about mixed emotions! I was so happy that I was not over 200lbs, but also disappointed about the 35.7 lbs weight gain. It's just what I needed though to lite a fire under my butt to lose the weight back off. I refuse to get ay bigger. Anywhoo, just thought I would share. :-)

My group says that eating less than 1000 calories will set you up to have a starvation metabolism that not only can halt weight loss, but also is correlated with less weight loss, and more weight regain in 10 year studies.....because your metabolism is reset to a sluggish starvation level that works against you when you start eating normally again. You really can't eat 600 calories a day forever without suffering malnutrition eventually. My group's protocol was developed by a major medical research hospital (University of Michigan) and is being picked up by Ceadars-Sinai and Bethesda naval hospital this year due to it's superior performance in longterm studies and excellent reputation in the Bariatric research community. There are still old-school doctors who push super low calorie diets post surgically. The weight loss is fast, and people are very happy with fast results. But they often don't last and can result in an unhealthy metabolism that can't handle normal levels of calories later...and eventually result in weight gain. The newer approach is to advance people to eating normal amounts of calories as soon as possible, so that they have the energy to add exercise and boost their metabolisms into athletic fat burning furnaces that last a lifetime and help them eat sensibly and continue to lose weight. My doctor: You get one chance to reset your metabolism with this surgery, why would you want to reset it to a starvation level that conserves every calorie? My nutritionist says that eating under 1000 calories is correlated with more hair loss, nutrient malabsorption, fatigue and stress. Fatigue and stress trigger cortisol...which again, is contraindicated for weight loss. Everyone has their own approach to who they trust and why.... A lot of my family is in medicine. I tend to trust the research hospitals and the empirical data of solid studies rather than the hype of clinics that are more interested in making a buck. I'm much more convinced by a collaborative consensus of what provably is healthiest long term and works. I've been eating 1000-1200 calories since week 3....very comfortably. I'm walking seven miles a day and feel terrific. The scale is moving down about two to three pounds a week and I'm off all my meds. I am loving this new lifestyle:) And I can live with it long term. And that's really the goal in my mind....the forever habits I can live with.

    13 months post op here and down 118 lbs since day of surgery. My psychiatrist did not change any of my meds, have been on the same ones for the last 8 years for bipolar. I gained a ton of weight the first few years after I started meds for bipolar, one of those was Seroquel. Wouldn't be surprised if some of the meds I'm currently on are known to cause weight gain. Anyway, the meds I'm currently taking: Risperidone, Celexa, Epitol and Klonopin.

    Hey Dimples58, Soooooooo.....drinking after wls is truly different for every person. I was also advised by my medical crew that I would not be able to tolerate much alcohol, BUT this was not true for me. I can drink a sailor under the table. Lol! This is not good though because it's a lot of calories and causes weight gain. My first attempt was a shot of whiskey about 6 months post op and I felt nothing. The only time I feel it quickly is if I don't eat first.

    January bypass buddies??

    I’m scheduled for Jan 12. I think subconsciously my body is freaking out but probably because my mind is blocking it out. I’ve had serious stomach issues for like 2 weeks. I’m not doing the liquid diet since my BMI is lower but I have gained 70lbs in three years due to different medications and have lost myself along the way. Trying to nip this is in bud and the Dr’s believe this will help with my absorption of medications although I am now finally on a pill that doesn’t cause weight gain. Either way I do need buddies since others don’t seem to understand what I am doing.

    OP, my Psych changed my meds when I questioned if my meds were contributing to me not being able to lose weight. My anti-psychotic was changed from Quetiapine (which apparently is VERY weight gaining) to Asenapine (which isn't weight gaining). My SSRI was changed to Fluoxetine. My Psych said that Fluoxetine can aid in weight loss in some people, I'm not sure if this is of any help to you. I noticed your in the USA - I have no idea if you have the same medications or any idea how your health system works I just wanted to tell you about my personal experiences. Of course everyones Doctor has a different opinion and everyone is going to react differently to medication, so it might take a bit of trial and error which can be frustrating.     Wellbutrin/bupropion is kinda like legal speed. If anything, that particular one will help you lose weight, not gain. SSRIs are notorious for weight gain, but are sometimes necessary. Just talk frankly with your psych...see what he/she can come up with to help. Also, talk to your bariatric surgeon...they've had some experience with this as well.

    I do not know what meds you are on. I know for me, they had to take out the extended release ones. The Welbutrin XR 450. I had been on 4 years. It was wonderful. They had to take it away and give me regular Welbutrin. Not as effective and am up to 400 mg. I also take seroquel. This drug they say makes you gain weight. I have not had that issue. But maybe because mine is used for sleep? So when I am well rested and have energy, I am being active. Talk to your doctor. I know i do not do well on SSRIs, and they are known for weight gain.     Cigna Question

    Hi guys this is my first post and I have a few questions for those that have Cigna about the approval process. I currently have UHC, however, I will be starting a new job in January and they offer Cigna. I am currently finishing up the six months of dietician visits required by UHC and I have just one month left before I would be able to submit for insurance approval. However, now that I will have Cigna through my new employer I have been researching their requirements. From what I have seen all In need is 4 months of appointments however my fear is twofold: 1. I never discussed exercise with my dietician and I see that is one of Cigna's requirements, how strict are they about this in your experience. I plan on discussing it at my next appointment so I will have it on my records but that would be only one month so would that be grounds for denial. 2. I have gained weight since starting this process. I have gained about 15lbs from the time I started to now. I am now working on my emotional eating and am making progress but I don't know if a pattern of weight gain will be grounds for denial from Cigna. Do any of you know? Thanks for all your insights!

  14. The goal should be healthy at whatever that weight might be for you. Here is my issue with statistics. Per my surgeon's office : St Luke's for the state Idaho follow patients for five years at each check up. The problem is that many bariatric patients stop coming to follow up appointments. Surgeons offices see a drop off of participants in the first to second year. St. Luke's is still required to send in the statistic even when they know for fact they are not accurate. These are factored into the national average. St lukes also says its normal to gain around fifteen after goal. Your body naturally wants to settle at a certain weight. I don't judge people that have lost 100% of weight, Lost below the norm or have weight gain. I also don't judge " if your body does not want to put up with a diet and calorie restriction" Things that I see when I talk to local patient in my area: (not saying all these issues will cause weight gain either) Gains can be small or a major for many reasons...Healthy issues, wrong type of surgery for the individual, not properly screened by the mental health process, muscle mass gain, eating/exercise disorders, mobility issues, hormone issues, Pregnancies, complications from surgery and going back to poor choices/behaviors (I'm sure I missed more examples) Personally, I never wanted to be considered a statist in this process. Each of us have different goals. it's a choice of what weight makes you comfortable for goal and maintenance. I hate the word failure. It might be you cannot lose weight due to the examples listed above. Could be a set back gain. What my life looks like at 3.7 years out for life I live on protein, sugar substitute, dairy,vegetables, healthy carbs and fruit.( I eat all food groups) At goal I indulge once in a while. When I have a weight gain. I go back to basics and get back down to where I am comfortable. Maintaining for me is chasing the same 10 to 15 pounds.Weight loss is slow.
  15. Thank you so much Smith.99. This is exactly why this particular forum was started. We really appreciate you coming back and sharing your experiences with us honestly. There have been many on this forum and others who have been trying to decide which weight loss procedure or surgery would be best for them. I am sure you researched as much as everyone else did before deciding and people in these forums were probably the best source of information because they have been through it and can give you a real life account. Your honesty is so valuable to all of us in the planning stages. Please continue to update us on your ups and downs for your own accountability and to help us get through our stalls and setbacks. As for your discouragement I think you need to look at it in a different way. Think of where you would be at this time of year without your esg procedure. After Thanksgiving and Christmas is when the most weight gain occurs usually. If you have only seen a 1 pound fluctuation without exercise then I would honestly call this a victory. This seems to be a common theme among esgers throughout the various forums— the weight loss is slow and steady not as rapid as the more invasive methods. Please continue to focus on the positives and don’t give up hope that this procedure will finally help you maintain a healthier weight. You’ve already taken the first step in committing to a your health. You just need to continue to post and not be discouraged. Best of luck in 2018!!
  16. Yes, absolutely. There are many reasons you fall off the wagon, usually falling off the wagon isnt introducing a bit more lean meat, vegetables and legumes in to your diet to ward off hunger, its going off the rails and eating high calorie and nutritionally void foods too frequently. Nobody gets obese eating comforting portions of lean meats, vegetables and legumes most of the time and treating themselves occassionaly. If you dont feel good eating filling portions of nutritionally dense food then you have a phycological issue, you arent suffering physically from this. Its difficult to gain weight by over indulging in lean protein and vegetables, but you can by over indulging in potatoes or high calorie processed foods. So I dismiss the idea that people stop eating nutritionally dense low calorie foods because? What? they're starving? What is the pressure that makes them not able to do it anymore? How is it not sustainable? Are they low on energy? If you are saying they dont feel good because they crave high calorie foods too often and want to give in to temptations often enough that it causes weight gain then that is phycological and can be changed with persistance its like an addiction. You wouldnt be saying this to an alcoholic. I felt like I wasnt getting anywhere on wholefoods after a while, but in hindsight if I kept going I would have broke the plateu eventually, even if I didnt it would be a better place than I am at now. I take full responsibility for mucking things up for me.
  17. Eating all of these foods daily in place of lean meats and vegetables is absolutely not a healthy diet and is precisely the cause of my weight gain. When I lost over 60lbs in the past, I could still occassionally eat these, but not to near the extent as I am now. I was simply explaining my reasons for regaining which was replacing my whole foods diet with a high carb/starch diet out of convenience.

I dislike shopping as well (do I really have to do this after I come home from work?) and I don't like cooking (do I really have to do this after I come home from work?) and cleaning up after (do I really have to do this after I come home from work?). I also dislike preparing food for the next day (do I really have to do this after I come home from work or before work in the next morning?). My compromise is that I keep it as simple as possible. I buy ready made soups that only have a few ingredients listed, even though they're relatively expensive. In general I think of warm food as more satisfying than cold food (e. g. warm oats are more satisfying IMO than cold oats) so I usually don't eat a sandwich/bread on its own but with soup. Soup and sandwich is a go-to for me when time is scarce. I also use frozen vegetables a lot. Saves both shopping, preparing, cleaning up and cooking time. Rice I cook in batches with a microwave rice cooker and freeze it in batches. After I started my new education my working times have changed (including 24 h shifts which are draining as hell) I'm struggling a bit as well, though it's more with regular exercise. I never got into the real groove again after my shoulder injury so far. Ok, I usually bike to work and I have been lucky with the roads not being icy so far but that's about it. Interestingly enough I haven't gained an ounce so far, even though I didn't feel I ate less food (though I must have anyway?). That's kind of a liberating observation. Convenience food (like sandwiches from the cafeteria) or eating lunch at the cafeteria even though they have a salad bar makes for less than ideal choices too often. I don't notice it in terms of weight gain (even lost a bit since starting my education), but I feel tired and drained a lot which I think is only partly because of different working hours. So even though I don't might like it, I will see to preparing oatmeal in the evening to grab in the morning instead of simply buying a sandwich at the cafeteria. There's no way though that I'll be nibbling on a piece of cucumber at 2:30 AM when I want something sweet. Protein bar for me then.

Indeed, its one of the reasons I have chosen to undergo surgery, although I could work at it myself, I cant garantee I wont regain at some point, and I am undergoing surgery in 2019 after which I will have to keep my weight down perminantly to avoid problems. So WLS for me is an added support to help me keep my weight as low as possible. My disinterest in cooking is currently greater than my need to satisfy my pallet. In recent years I have avoided cooking and rather look to quicker alternatives. Bread, rice and potatoes also store longer, and I dislike crowds and shopping, so keeping stocked with fresh vegetables is difficult for me. I have become reluctant to push myself out of my comfort zone, when I do it life is better, but It gets the better of me at times. Essentaily I have social disorders that make me more inclined to behaviours what would lead to weight gain. What I call lazyness is probably anxiety and avoidence. my bmi is only 31, took me a while to climb to this weight again but here I am. If it wasnt for my future surgery |I probably wouldnt be going through with WLS.
  20. I am looking to see if anyone has gotten sleeved with the minimum bmi standard. I have tried so many diets only to have them ending in more weight gain. I wouldn't even be as upset about my weight or bmi number if it weren't for HOW i carry the weight. I am a big ol apple! Im looking to find others who are in my boat and what their outcomes have been post op.

    Opinions on sleeve vs. bypass?

    I think since I am self pay, and insurance isn't covering it I might be successful with the sleeve even though people have experienced weight gain. Maybe if you don't have to pay out of pocket you don't treat it as seriously? I don't know. I have a really bad sweet tooth, and when I get a craving for it, I can be really mean if I don't have it. I want the gastric bypass, but with less recovery time and not having to take vitamins forever, it might be the one for me. I really hope after I do this, I don't have to go back in for something else, because that would have been such a waste of money. I am leaning towards sleeve, but am still not convinced. For those of you having surgery or are going back, I wish you guys so much luck for a speedy recovery!!
  23. Hello Sleevers, As a new BP member, I would like to start this forum topic because it is the reason why I have decided to rejoin the WLS Online Community. I was sleeved 09/18/2015 and was very successful. I lost 129 lbs and was feeling great!!! Then 2017 rolled in with it's funky self and brought stress, anxiety and emotional distress prompting a significant weight gain. I am no longer in my size 8 clothing and back up to a size 12. I am determined to get back on track and lose the weight I've regained, plus an additional 4 pounds which would finally bring me to my original weight loss goal of 160 lbs. So, has anyone else experienced a significant weight gain after being sleeved and managed to lose the weight back off? Any tips? It would be great to share this journey with others as we all know that we do better when we support one another. :-)

Also, my surgeon told me to be mindful of how much weight I lost pre-op because too much loss could disqualify me from having the surgery...after I told my surgeons nurse about the weight gain she brushed it off, said that was why she hated weight loss pills, because you can lose while on them, but not much, and you can’t take them forever, and as soon as you come off the weight comes back. Phen worked, but as soon as I came off, I mean within days I started gaining back.
  25. For my insurance and program you have to lose 5% of your body weight in order to be approved. If you lose the 5% and get sent for approval then gain it back they will postpone or cancel your surgery. As long as you lose that 5% any weight gain/loss doesn't matter. So for example if you are 300 pounds you need to lose 15 pounds and say you lose 20 but gain 5 back you're okay because you're still within that 5% but if you lose 15 and gain 2 back you are then out of the 5% approval range. You have to lose and maintain that 5%. But like other's have commented, every program and insurance company is different and have different regulations.
