    Protein Powder Suggestions

I am neither endorsing nor recommending this product other than to say I have used it: https://www.amazon.com/Ancient-Nutrition-Protein-Turmeric-Servings/dp/B01DOEL8CM?th=1 Tumeric flavored bone broth powder. The problem with it is the fact that it is a poor protein, collagen. This is not a protein that has any great efficacy with muscle growth or retention. It can't hurt, but it is not really giving you the same bang for your buck in regards to usable protein. But it is at least better than Genepro. Pretty much any unflavored whey protein powder would work with a heavily spiced or seasoned mashed vegetable IMO. While I do enjoy a great tasting meal, an OK tasting meal that meets my macros is far more worthwhile IMO.
  2. Last Friday at 12:30pm I had my vsg procedure. Everything went smooth. I was walking within 30 minutes, and sipping Water. I was released around 6pm. The first evening was a bit painful from the gas, and I slept in a recliner. I was able to sip on more water. Day 2 similar in gas pain. Gas X and walking helped a lot. I have no issues getting 60 - 70 oz of liquids. I primarily drink water, but like the sugar free Popsicles, Jello and broth. My only issue now is lower back pain. I have an appointment with my pcp today, so I will inquire with her. I have no issues with getting in Protein. Right now I'm using EAS shakes (vanilla & chocolate), and typically in the morning I have a premier shake from Walmart. I like to start with premier because it has 30g of protein. I add GENEPRO Protein powder to broth, and have made up a blender concoction with it. My blender drink is ice, skim milk (3oz), genepro (tsp), and chocolate EAS shake. I am currently down 18lbs. This may sound like a lot, but my doctor didn't have the pre op diet. So I'm prepared for it to slow down soon. Height 6'7 SW 372 CW 354 GW 260 SW 372 GW 260

There are various "recipes" for shakes that you can find online, and some are surprisingly yummy. I like Unjury's chocolate Protein shake with a little PB2 powder blended in, or a Torani sugar free syrup. If you haven't checked out the blog "The World According to Eggface" I recommend popping over and looking at her shake recipes. Starting about a week out I began making smoothies using a Greek or Bulgarian yogurt that is high in protein and low in carbs and some frozen fruit. It felt more like a "normal" meal to me. Dr. Matthew Weiner is a bariatric surgeon who has a video on YouTube about the "set point smoothie" that he recommends to his patients. I also like adding GENEPRO or another unflavored Protein Powder to Crystal Light. For me finding things to look forward to and distract myself was beneficial during recovery. I took advantage of the time off to binge watch several shows everyone raves about that I'd never had time to watch, read some great books, and got little treats like fresh flowers and candles that add a simple pleasure to the day. That helped me to take my mind off food. I had cravings for things that first week that I haven't desired at all ever since. Head hunger is totally normal, and for most people it lessens with time.
  4. I knew the second I saw the thread title someone would bring up genepro. It is impossible to cram 30 grams of anything into a tablespoon. Lol

    VSG on 4/16/18: My journey

I am currently living out of a hotel and I am bored to death. I miss my baby girl and boyfriend, and I am ready to be home with them. Anyhow, the puréed stage is going really well. I’ve had applesauce, oatmeal and puréed chicken tortilla Soup. My surgeon said that he has never heard or seen of a leak after four weeks, so I hit my four weeks next Monday. I have so much anxiety about that, and I know that there are people on here that had later leaks, but I feel like 4 weeks is a good time to stop worrying so much. Outside of that, I did have my first instance of eating too fast. I came up to my hotel room and ordered chicken tortilla soup. It was so good and I ate too fast. Luckily I didn’t eat too much, but I was miserable for a good half hour. Another thing is that I am surprised at how little of an appetite I actually have. I have not been hungry since having the soup (at 2:30), and it is 10:30 now. I just forced myself to have a little applesauce because I am getting so few calories. I can’t do Protein Shakes anymore so I have been depending on GENEPRO this week. I am going to buy some syntrex nectar next week and give that a try. Genepro

A few months ago I read a thread on here where a man mentioned using a Protein powder that is similar to GENEPRO but less expensive. I unfortunately cannot remember the name of that product, but perhaps you could do a keyword search and locate that thread. It's possible that powder is available in the UK. You could also try posting your question on the listing for Genepro on Amazon. Ask if they know of a distributor that ships to the UK, and alternatively, and if there's a similar product to try. Other Amazon consumers can reply to questions in addition to the vendor, and they might be able to offer more direction. http://www.amazon.com/Musclegen-Research-Genepro-Medical-Servings/dp/B00K6OSDYA

    FIVE MONTHS OUT

I can handle the protein shakes, fortunately. I get 60 grams of my prescribed 60 to 80 from to of the Pure Protein brand shakes. Eight or so more from 3 ounces of cottage cheese. I may still try the GENEPRO to see whether it's palatable mixed in oatmeal. For me, water doesn't taste bad, I just can't drink very much at once.

  10. @@leonelbreton You might want to try GENEPRO, it is more expensive, but the scoops are smaller, the mix is finer, and you get 30g of Protein. I ordered from Amazon..... http://www.amazon.com/Musclegen-Research-Genepro-Medical-Servings/dp/B00K6OSDYA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455942223&sr=8-1&keywords=genepro You should find it much easier soon!
  11. There are plenty out there. My surgeon sells his own brand of shakes and i was not a fan of the price or taste. I ordered syntrax nectars and matrix they have a guarantee. If you dont like it they will refund you. I liked some flavors prior to surgery but not after. I also use genepro clear protein with no flavor from amazon. There is something out there comparable to what your surgeon pushes im sure. Good luck!

    Grazing?

Give Genepro protien try (available on Amazon). It's got 30 grams of protein in 1 tablespoon and is easily mixed into any liquid hot or cold. It's been my lifesaver! I don't really like "milky" protein shakes, but can mix it into 5-6oz Vitamin Water Zero or Crystal Light without changing the flavor or the texture. Do that 3x a day and you're covered!

    Need a Buddy

I don’t have a gallbladder so no not that. But I’m having a very hard time transitioning from soft proteins to regular food. Most days I never get in only half the fluid and I meet the protein with protein drinks help when I have dumping syndrome which is often in this stage for me. I had liver disease liver induced diabetes and failing kidney from hereditary triglycerides was eating at my liver so either gastric or donor. Anyways during being sick with liver I got to where I didn’t like meats well. So it’s been hard. So I use genepro with crystal light to get my protein. Lots of people think it doesn’t work but I’ve done my research and it’s absorbing great with me. I’m still nauseous especially if out to eat home somewhat better. My appetite sucks unless it’s non protein then I’m good. By the way I’m southern as cornbread so excuse my speech lol. East Tn at bottom of mountains lol.
  14. People mix it in sauces and salad dressing. Hot cereals, shakes, puddings. I love GENEPRO Sent from my SM-G920T using the BariatricPal App
  15. It's not usual to feel tired this soon after surgery. This is why it is advised to take at least 2 weeks off. Some of us bounce back quickly, others don't. There really isn't anyway to tell beforehand. Hopefully you are still taking your Vitamins and supplements. If protein powders are a challenge, focus on at least getting in your fluids. If you get dehydrated you will feel worse. Lastly keep calling your doctor's office. You need to touch base with him if you are feeling poorly. The noises will go away eventually. Some tummies just like to gurgle. You should be following your nutritionist recommended diet. If cheese and pureed Soups is on your menu then enjoy! I was having cheese and pureed soups within the first 2 weeks because it was allowed on my full liquid stage. I have yet to have a problem eating/drinking anything. I agree Genepro appears to be using some sort of pseudo science. I know it's popular, but I would personally shy away from it.
  16. genepro is a joke. its a lie they tell you to use much less Protein saying that their blend is like getting 30 grams of protein but they are saying that as if you cant absorb protein which isnt true so genepro right of is a very very bad idea it doesnt give you anywhere near enough protein which is probably why your body is starving itself along with dehydration. please do not rely on the GENEPRO or at least put in three to four times as much as it calls for.

    Protein Shakes

I can't beleive that a company as big as GENEPRO can get away with false advertising. If you use it in whatever it doesn't have any taste. I am a coffee person and YOU DON'T want to mess up my coffee. LOL It also is made by a VETRAN which I think makes it even more appealing. I went in to read that article and I couldn't get the whole story. They wanted a proffesional Email, like a Lawyer or something. My ? is how can they get away without the FDA coming down on them? I would think that the Goverment would get involved or something. Right

    Protein Shakes

A lot of people love Premier protein shakes. I did until post op I couldn’t tolerate them; made me have diarrhea. Now I stick strictly to premier protein clear drinks & Genepro odorless, tasteless powder. I mix half a scoop Genepro into my premier protein with a crystal light and drink everyday. So much easier and cheaper than buying a multitude of other products. I still have powder I purchased pre op that I haven’t opened & eventually I may play around with them as drink them or give them away so moral of the story is try some now, see what ya like but don’t go overboard with buying lots of drinks because you may have different taste buds post op or you may not be able to tolerate it. Vitamin Shoppe is good about giving samples & GNC will go e you store credit for opened products you don’t like or full refund on stuff you haven’t opened

New here, procedure set for Jan. 12, 2017!

The GENEPRO isn't thick at all.
  21. Hi All, So in due diligence, I've been researching protein shakes and drinks. I haven't had surgery yet, but I'm trying to start training myself to drink consistently throughout the day and to start steering away from not eating most days until 2 PM or later. While at Target this weekend, I noticed that they had the Protein 2o in mixed berry and picked some up. They're not half bad actually. They do seem to make my mouth dry when I first take a sip, but I think that's just a matter of getting used to it and I actually enjoy the overall flavor. Back when I had my lapband sx in 2007 pretty much all I had available to me were the milky, overly sweet type of protein shakes and I loathed them after being on liquids for so many weeks pre/post-surgery. So, I am quite encouraged by the juice type drinks. Which leads me to my question. Given that the protein shake market has gotten so much more expansive in the past 12 years, I'm confused by what seems to be 2 different labeled shakes. Some say Protein "meal replacement" like the Bariatricpal protein One and others like Genepro and Syntrax just say protein powder. I've tried reading the labels and I don't see much difference in the two types. Although I will say that I thought it was rather shady of Syntrax to advertise that their protein individual pack will provide 23 grams of protein, only to read the label and see that a serving size is 1/4 of a packet, so you have to multiply everything by 4 to get to 1. the amount of protein they advertise and 2. the actual calories in each pack. So that's my questions Bariatricpal world: is there a difference in meal replacement shakes and the ones just labeled protein powder Which do you use? Also, since you're here, if you've had bypass and you're greater than say 5 months out, how many of you are still drinking protein shakes as a regular part of your diet, even if just one meal, say breakfast. Thanks for your help!

    GENEPRO? What's up?

Genepro doesn’t claim to have 30g of protein, but it claims to be equivalent. People often call it a scam yet fail to mention that part. I will say this, while some may be completely against it, my doc has followed the lawsuit and still highly recommends it. I know this may be coincidence too, but I recently ran out and tried to get my protein by food alone. As I am only 10 weeks out, my protein levels dropped and I immediately saw a huge increase in hair loss. I decided to order more and started taking it again, and within about a week, the hair loss lightened up. It didn’t stop and I don’t expect it to, but there was a huge difference. Now that may be coincidence, but I am listening to my body first. By the way, there are several currently lawsuits pending that claim many of the protein brands we drink don’t actually have the amount of protein they claim. That comes with the industry, it is not regulated enough for any of us to really know. So my point it, find one that works for you and listen to your body.

    GENEPRO? What's up?

I've baked with Genepro and Isopure, and both mix well and do the job. This link has some great tips for baking with protein powder: https://teaspoonofspice.com/which-protein-powder-best-baking/

    Food

On the go cheese - babybel, laughing cow, cheese sticks Jerky Lunchables (don't eat the crackers) Okios triple zero yogurts (cup or drink) Ready to drink Protein drinks High protein chips/crackers like Quest, WonderSlim, Medifast etc. I make unflavored Protein added puddings and Gelatin. You can buy 2-5oz cups and lids at your local restaurant supply store. At home meals I've made shrimp (ground) curry with zucchini, chicken and cheese stuffed crepes, Korean bbq, swai with again glaze, crust less quiche. They all have 300cals or less per serving with 17g protein or more. Homemade protein fudgecicles 12oz fairlife milk and 2 scoops GENEPRO. Mix well and pour into 6 pack 3oz popcicle mold. Makes 6 serving 54 cals and 10g protein. Can add in things like PB2, banana baby food, instant coffee, sugar free syrups or ground freeze dried strawberries for only a few more cals and carbs.
