  2. I'm not a vet, so I still do a protein shake or protein powder (usually genepro in pudding) on most days of the week, but there are definitely days I go without a supplement. on those days, I am typically eating some combination of the following foods: 3-4oz of meat or fish (~20-28 grams), greek yogurt (15g), a cup of beans (~15g+/-), Yasso frozen greek yogurt bars (5-6g each) various cheeses (~5-7g per serving), cashews (~5g per ~1/4 cup), eggs (6g each) oats (~2-3g per 1/4 cup). chia seeds (~2-3g per tbs), ground flaxseed (~1-2g per tbs), some veggies (peas in particular) and even bread and other carbs have small amounts of protein, and It all adds up at the end of the day. I always get 60+ grams per day, but usually more. I don't eat a lot of meat and try my best to limit all deli/processed meats, but I do find that is the easiest, most efficient way to get the protein in without a supplement.

    GENEPRO & Other Must Haves

I put Genepro in my Powerade Zero bottle. Mixes better at room temp though. Take a sip, add powder and shake well. Throw some ice cubes and you have a tasty 30g protein drink

    GENEPRO & Other Must Haves

I bought a big bag of GenePro and I don’t like it. Even though it’s unflavored, it still has a taste, and it’s unpleasant. It’s useful for mixing into purées like refried beans and mashed cauliflower that cover the taste well enough. I mixed it into broth when I was on clear liquids, and I could only add a little bit or it would taste too bad. I never tried it with plain water, but based on how it tasted in broth, I wouldn’t want to. I did see someone on YouTube making a protein shot with it (mixing it into a small amount of water and drinking it quickly), but I don’t think I could stand to drink that. Rather than mixing GenePro into flavored drinks, I would recommend getting clear protein drinks. Protein2O is popular. I bought a case of it and I didn’t like it, but I suspect I might have gotten a bad batch or something because every time I drank it, I got solids (the texture of cooked egg whites) precipitating out in my mouth. Premier Protein makes a ready-to-drink clear protein but I haven’t been able to find it where I shop. There are also some clear protein powders on the market, like Syntrax Nectar. I bought some bone broth, but I didn’t care for it much. I ended up preferring broth made from Better than Bouillon (which I already had in my fridge since I use it for recipes). I was able to mix a little GenePro in it without it having too bad of a taste. One of my favorite protein drinks is protein hot chocolate. I got it in the BariatricPal store and it was really good. I mix it with warm Fairlife milk for a nice protein boost, I bought a big canister of it on Amazon, but that’s not as good as what I got from BariatricPal. I’ve found that warm liquids go down easier than cold, and the hot chocolate is a nice change of pace from cold protein shakes.
  5. Hey Everyone, My surgery is next week and I want to make sure I have everything together. Has anyone tried Genepro? Can I start Genepro week 1 after surgery in my clear liquids? Has anyone tried Genepro in just plain water? What are some clear & regular liquids that have been your favorite? I'm not crazy about Powerade Zero but I guess I can try it again. If I cant stomach it before surgery I cant imagine I will be able to after. I need some of your favorite clear liquids such as powered zero, crystal light, Mio, Etc. I also could use some ideas for the full liquids. I know which protein drinks I like but I'm lost when it comes to the best soups, fruit juices, and veg juices. Thanks for your help! PS I don't cook much so grab and go is best but will make from scratch if I need.
  6. I had some mild diarrhea and GI distress in my pre-op diet including whey protein, but street surgery the whey protein and whey protein isolate absolutely killed me; super painful diarrhea. I started using plant based and I feel much better. My questions are, one, can anyone recommend a whey alternative that isn’t gross? Two, is there anyone who can tolerate Genepro but not other whey protein? I’ve heard so many people rave about the Genepro in terms of taste, digestion and how readily it dissolves but I don’t want to buy it if it’s just going to make me sick!
  7. I have no attachment to Built Bars (protein bars are not my thing), but I didn’t read anything damming in that article. I’d have to see the evidence in the lawsuit to determine if the company is in the wrong and is undeserving of my business. (For instance, I would never purchase Genepro due to the evidence in the lawsuit against them, and Genepro’s lack of response to the suit)

    help i think im overeating

I am no expert but I would advise that you blend your mango with a protein shake or add protein powder like Genepro or Isopure flavorless or vanilla. I would sub a shake for the apple juice. That will add more protein to your morning, which should help keep you feeling fuller. Good luck!!

    Clear Protein

I also liked the Premier Clear (20 grams of protein) prior, but found them too sweet after and had to water them down. I also liked Swanson Sipping Bone Broths (9 grams of protein and 45 calories) for a non-sweet option. For protein powders I use Genepro, it is a smaller scoop and seemed easier to blend without clumps into my soups, broths and tea. Make sure and mix it into a cold/cool liquid and add to anything heated. I have also added it to sugar free jello for protein jello shots. Good luck!!

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Be careful what you ask for! You might get stuck with some failed experiments 😆 Smoked salmon turned out great and well-tolerated, I minced 1/4 of a shallot and 3-ish capers and folded it into 1 T of low fat cream cheese with a little lemon juice and salt. It was delicious, next time I might add some everything bagel seasoning! The sweet potato 'pie' was less successful. After baking, it turned out to be fairly rubbery and was difficult to get down. I think next time I'll just have the sweet potatoes mashed with the spices and genepro without a second bake. My stall finally broke today after a week! Lost 4 lbs in 2 days.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

I was so surprised when my nutritionist was saying that people tend to struggle with eggs post-op. But after having tried a scrambled egg and regretting it, its entirely true. I can sill barely believe it! I miss them so much! I'm doing well, I've been trying a variety of foods to make sure my stomach is used to everything and I haven't developed any allergies or serious intolerances. I had cod poached in milk, leeks, and saffron. A 2 oz MD crabcake with no breadcrumb/cracker filler. Prosciutto actually went down very well- I peeled off most of the fat, and didn't swallow any sinuey parts. Beans have been well tolerated too, I've had both refried beans and white bean dip. Tomorrow I plan on blending some smoked salmon with ricotta and maybe a little light cream cheese. Also going to roast a sweet potato, blend it with some genepro, milk, egg, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove and baking once more... going for something like a pie filling. I'm eating better now than I was before surgery! My calories are coming in at around 400-600 per day. I've been able to stay at 1 protein shake a day and get another 30 g from food, where I'll eat 4 2 oz portions in the morning, noon, dinner, and snack. I've lost no weight for the past 3 days, but including my pre-op diet the timing is spot on for the dreaded week three stall. Hoping it will be over soon and I'll see a decent loss!

    Anyone for August 2020

My surgery (sleeve) was done on July 30th and I am in the midst of two week post op liquid diet. I feel great, just a little bit of itching and pain at the two largest incisions...and of course, I would love to eat something...anything!! Last night my daughter and I ordered soups from Panera (Summer Corn Chowder) and I strained mine and gave her all the "stuff" and just ate the broth/cream and OH. MY. GOSH. I was in heaven!!!! I didn't add protein powder to it because I had two Premier protein shakes already. Things I recommend: 1) Genepro Powder - I tried several protein powders but this was the smallest scoop and easiest to blend. I usually mix it in a little milk, broth or water and add it to any hot soups/broths. I use it to make Jello shooters that have protein in them, protein pudding and add to broths to make them higher in protein. 2) Use Premier Protein (especially caramel) in decaf coffee 3) Don't buy the nasty powdered soups...or if you do, don't buy too many! I have 4 boxes and they are the WORST! (At least for me). 4) Swanson Sipping Broths (45-50 calories and 9 grams of protein) Easy to heat, easy to drink. I cannot wait to get to the puree stage...and then real food!! And I am down 10.5 pounds from surgery day so a little over a pound a day. GOOD LUCK!! This is going to be a game changer!

    Add Genepro to Chicken Broth?

Genepro was actually sued and genepro lost in regards to that high of protein in a little scoop. You can google it if you want to know more. I haven’t tried the powder i just read about the lawsuit. Just know you are probably only getting half of the 30. However, some people swear by it. I also have the containers for meal prep. I will be using a mandatory post op bariatric advantage shake kit at first though. After that premier protein probably

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Hi all, my first post here! I'm a little late to the party, but I had my RnY Gastric Bypass surgery a little less than two weeks ago. After some initial discomfort due to the anesthesia I've been struggling to get my protein shakes down. I've fortunately been able to eat full liquids starting my second week which has been an enormous relief- I never thought I could enjoy cottage cheese with a little bit of salt so much! I've been making an attempt to cook and prep my meals and limit canned/processed foods. My go-to's have been the aforementioned cottage cheese w/ salt and low fat greek yogurt with a homemade cherry 'jam' (cherries cooked down with a little splenda, lemon juice, water, and blended). I also made a caramelized onion & rosemary whipped ricotta dip, which turned out to be delicious and tastes richer than it actually is. I also attempted to make a 'mango lassi' style protein shake with some freeze-dried mango, greek yogurt, skim milk, and genepro. It turned out to be too much for my stomach to handle, but I hope to try it again down the line... I love food and cooking, and I also still love eating... which, in part, is how I got to my high weight. So far the surgery has helped me be satisfied with a 2 oz serving, but undoubtedly this will become more difficult for me in the future. I even saw it this week, when I was saving the best looking bite of my yogurt for last. I could have put down the yogurt a little earlier, but I wanted to finish my portion for that last bite. This is obviously a habit I want to break, so best bites first from now on. Looking forward to reading your stories! My surgery was late in July, so a lot of you must be close to 1 month out. How's it going?

    Full liquids starts tomorrow!

I'm interested in this too...although I have been on this phase for 5 days! LOL I have been scouring Pinterest for ideas and here are some: https://sleevers.wordpress.com/2014/03/29/high-protein-jello-mousse-full-liquids-stage/amp/ https://www.bariatricfoodie.com/how-to-make-protein-oatmea/ https://www.bariatricfoodcoach.com/liquid-recipes-protein-shakes-after-bariatric-surgery/ https://www.theinspirationedit.com/31-soup-recipes-for-gastric-bypass-patients/ Mostly, I have been making Campbell's Healthy Request Cream of "Whatever" soup, thinned with additional 1% milk and strained to remove any non-liquid bits for my one savory meal per day. I also eat one greek yogurt per day and a couple of protein shakes. Everything I make, I add a scoop of Genepro protein powder to up my protein intake...I even made protein jello shots!

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

My doctor only had clear liquid through day 2, so I’ve been on full liquid, including strained soups and Greek yogurt, since day 4. (It could have been day 3, but I wasn’t up to much on day 3!). I am also a rule follower, so I totally get it! But I can’t imagine 2 weeks of clear liquid diet! Strained cream of chicken with added genepro protein made with 1% milk has been my go to for one meal each day.

    Seasonings

I recently bought a bunch of seasonings from Flavor God. Nacho cheese is good on pureed refried beans and mashed cauliflower. Buttered cinnamon roll is good on applesauce (helps to cover up the taste of the Genepro protein powder I add to is). Pizza is good on the famous ricotta bake. I also bought everything seasoning, taco Tuesday, and lemon garlic but haven't tried them yet. I like sugar-free caramel syrup in applesauce and tea. And I like to mix chocolate protein powder and PB2 powdered peanut butter into Oikos Triple Zero yogurt.
  18. I just recently discovered Genepro unflavored protein powder. It is expensive but worth it. It has 30gr protein per scoop and the scoop is less than half size of other protein powders. It mixes easily and doesn’t leave that powdery taste. It’s the only way I’ve hit my daily protein goals. I’m not a big water drinker so I add a scoop to my glass of tea and have 30gr of protein with one tea drink. It doesn’t even change the flavor or texture either. I highly recommend trying it. It’s been a game changer for me! 😊

    Soft food help

I'm on day 16 and I read my grocery list to my dietitian and she was pretty okay with it. Mix it up. I try to buy things I can easy mix in my Genepro. I bought Wholly Guacamole, Applesauce, Yogurt, Deli Meat. I also agree, baby spoon is something I want to buy. The only time I felt stomach pain was with my diet lemonade, stay away from citrus. Sorry to hear you are going through this.

    Hungry

Hi richiewho, I'm right at 500-550 now. Basically, I start my day with a cup of tea and about 1/3c whole milk (indulgent, but it tastes SOOO good). Usually I put a scoop of genepro powder in it as well. Then later in the morning I have a Pure protein shake made with skim milk. In the afternoon I have a cup of broth, and sometimes another 8oz of skim milk. I guess I'm a fan of milk, hey? Plus lots and lots of water in between. So far it's all working, 11 days after surgery I'm down 18#.
  21. Over 60 is my daily goal. 30 gram homemade smoothie (Fage Greek, Pb2, Genepro, Banana Almond Milk) 2 oz ground beef = 16 grams pro 2 oz peel and eat shrimp. = 15 pro = 61. Sometimes I add a Weight Watchers cheese stick for 6 more grams = 67 total. This is a typical day. Sometimes it chicken instead of ground beef. The shrimp is sometimes scallops.

    Protein suggestions

I have the same problem with whey proteins since my surgery. I have found GenePro to be pretty tolerable. I can’t taste it in a fruit smoothie. Might be worth a try.
  23. angryspice

    Protein pudding?

I like to add 1 scoop of genepro to sugar-free pudding mix and whisk together. then add 2 cups of skim milk. I start with about half a cup and whisk well so that i don't get lumps and then add the rest of the milk in two parts and continue whisking for a couple minutes. you really can't taste the protein at all and the pudding does end up being more filling. however, this is certainly a slider food for me so I am trying to cut back on it. it is very easy and delicious, and it helps me meet my protein goal without consuming yet another protein shake.

    I want to succeed

I'm so glad I found this topic. I'm almost 2 weeks post VSG and the protein is difficult. I have dozens of bottles of Protein2O and just thinking about it makes me want to gag! I ordered Isopure and almost cried when I opened it and saw the huge scoop of a serving size. Also, it is not tasteless... So, I'm going to order the Genepro and cross my fingers that I can get it down. Time to drink more water.
  25. Sounds like you're truckin right along! Protein powder (genepro) in soup broth and 1 oz Sugar free jello shots made with the same protein powder (had 2 grams each) kept me alive the first 5 days when putting anything in me felt like a mistake. Have you tried these? You will be amazed at the week marks and how much better you feel. One week was a huge difference. Then two then three. Today I ate 2 ounces of ground chicken and peanuts in a thai broth and for the very first time I did not feel uncomfortable afterwards. Normally I get the "too full-not ready for this" feeling. Not today. Today is my 4 week mark. I have been approaching this like a rebirth. Relearning now to eat and considering the first 8 weeks to be a time I expect to feel badly. I'm halfway thru and today is a good day. Hope it is for everyone else as well. It's also the 5th day in a row of being 200 pounds. CRAZY! My bod doesn't want to let go of the 200s. Well... I think tomorrow is gonna be the day. ONWARD BYPASSERS!!
