ha ha Jack that is funny, I am a fat vegetarian!! oh dear, sigh, and people have actually asked me if I chose to become a vegetarian in order to lose weight, uh...i have gained weight since i have become one over 8 years ago! I am being banded in a few days fellow veggie and i think it is totally an option, however you just really need to make sure you can get in your protein, there are many protein drink options out there! Good Luck!

    vegetarian

I am another vegetarian now vegan that became fat. As a matter of fact, I struggled with finding an eating program that would satisfy all the nutritional requirements -- my friends are all trying to get me to switch. Anyway, I am forced to restrict grains as I found out at the same time as surgery that I have allergies to all grains except buckwheat -- a forced way to restrict my carbs. If anyone is interested, I have a menu plan that has been "approved" by the nutritionist. I can't figure out how to attach it. If anyone wants it just email me.
  3. So, weird thing. Before surgery, I loved meat. Now, if any meat sounds good, I give it a try and then the next time I think about it, it repulses me. Since surgery 6 weeks ago, I've tried bits of burger, chicken, even hot dog(I know it's bad) , and now all of them sound completely disgusting to me. am I weird? I can eat turkey burger no problem, but anything else....yuck. Maybe my body just wants me to convert to vegetarian? I don't even know. lol
  4. Hey Guys! Thanks so much for all the support and encouragment. Reading your responses really has helped. I began the process back in November and have done alot of research and have always felt really confident about the VSG but this morning I woke up in a panic. It is so wonderful to hear from people who have been there and can give me honest information. I wasnt sure how to quote you guys since I am new on here so I have responded to each of you below. Thanks again! Lissa, I began to try to detox myself off of caffeine and sodas as well and have been extremely successful although I was addicted to diet soft drinks. I have been 4 months without it. It was hard at first but not even an issue right now. As far as the sweets......ehhh not so much. Thanks for the suggestions to talk to someone about the emotional issues that I have with food. I know I have them! JoyV, Congrats on making it out of the Plus sizes! I cant wait to say the same!!!! Yeah, I live in Lima, Peru and they eat rice and french fries with everything. I cant imagine a world without them but I am so ready to live in that world! MeginNOLA, thanks so much for your comments. I am exactly the same way. I love to eat healthy food and have even thought that I could be a vegetarian because I love veggies so much. I just make stupid choices!!! Even when given healthy options I opt for the cheesy fatty bad one! Are you from New Orleans? I am actually from Shreveport, LA and lived for 15 years in Baton Rouge. Just spent a year in New Orleans going to the seminary there. I would love to keep in touch. Living in Peru right now but heading back to the US for Christmas! Amazon13: Good luck for your upcoming surgery. Yours is the day before mine! We will get fit together! Amykins, I am right there with you. I am so ready to NOT be a slave to sugar! I would much prefer a brownie to an outright meal. What is wrong with me??? Anyway, I will pray for you as you change your life too! We are in this together!!! Barisaxylady: I am ready for the change! Lets do this! And one other thing: I started exercising for an hour a day 9 days ago and I feel like I am starving all the time!!!! haha
  5. You can try to type in Vegetarian Bandsters, and there site might come up. Play around with the wording, and you might find them. They go back a long way.

    Carb Attack?

I log food. I watch but am not obsessive about my carbs. However my nutritionist recommended I keep calories low (currently between 700 -900) and carbs at no more than 50. I am vegetarian and my carbs can get a little higher. However they are from the plant based Proteins I eat. I avoid most "white" carbs like bread, pastas, white rice, crackers, etc.... One thing I have noticed is that those types of carbs can be like the never ending monster. If I have them I start to crave them. As long as I don't have them, I am fine. I also try to eat according to my day. A day like today that is a non gym mostly chill out day I eat lighter.
  8. I make sure to get enough protein and I take a high potency Multivitamin for vegetarians, plus a Vitamin D pill every day. Unfortunately, most of my protein is now coming from Protein shakes. Relying on vitamin and protein supplements goes against much of what I feel to be a healthy approach to food and I feel that I ate healthier pre-band (except for the massive portions) than I am eating in this last month. I'm thinking this is just a phase. As I mentioned, if I weren't forcing myself to eat more, I'd usually end the day at about 500 calories. Today, I've eaten 368 calories according to my calorie counter, with 40 grams of protein, mostly from a high quality whey isolate powder. Before I go to bed, I'm going to have another scoop of protein with a full cup of 2% milk to bring up the caloric and nutritional content. And I'll definitely have some fruit and veggies. That'll bring me up to 650 or so calories. Tomorrow, I'm going to try to eat more calorie-dense items that don't take a lot of time to prepare or eat, but those are somewhat difficult to find for a vegetarian looking to keep fat intake down to 24g a day. The problem with losing interest in food is that you can't be bothered putting an effort into preparing and cooking when you don't really want to eat. CheckYes, I think you should purchase a really high quality and good tasting Protein Powder if you haven't already. I find Protein drinks really easy to consume even when I don't want to eat anything. On days when I manage to eat 800 calories, I can usually get in 100g of protein largely with the help of whey. There's obviously a limit to how much people should get from supplemental sources as opposed to whole foods, but at least we'd be getting our protein until our appetites come back.

    Eat To Live/plant Based Diets

I don't follow the program at all. I'm vegetarian though and can tell you that beans/lentils are good sources of protein. I love my black beans.

Please help debunk the protein mystery...

My understanding is that it breaks down to bioavailability. While collagen derived Protein is able to pack a punch with the amount of protein vs the volume, my understanding is that it is not easy for the body to digest. Here is a good article that talks about different proteins: http://www.nutritionexpress.com/article+index/authors/mark+g+taylor+ms/showarticle.aspx?articleid=896 I would discuss the types of Proteins with your NUT and Dr as well. If you like pea protein and it's giving you what you need, and your Dr/ agrees, I se no reason not to use it, many vegan and vegetarian sleevers use it. Good luck!

    Here we goooO!

I started my pre-op diet today after two days of last-mealitis and binging. I tried to fit in all of my favorite foods just in case I never get to eat them again. Let's see... I went to two fast food places, Taco Cabana and Jack in the Box. I don't know why I chose Jack in the Box. I never eat there! But I loaded up on tacos, chicken sandwiches, flauta, fajita taco, cake, eggrolls and more. Then last night, I hit the bakery at Market Street for a lemon torte and a fruit tart. I bought an eclair and a napolean but never got around to eating them. I also bought a shitload of diet food, fearing that I would be deprived if I didn't have everything I could possibly want at my fingertips. Today I am have a protein shake for breakfast. The new diet is low-fat, low-carb, and vegetarian. So basically, I can eat protein supplements, veggies, and fruit with an occassional cracker. YUUUUUUMMMMY! [she says with intense sarcasm] I think my biggest problem right now is the overwhelming fear that this, like many other things I have tried to lose weight, will not work. My brain is scrambling with the question, "What if I change my body and put myself through all of this and remain fat?" It happens. And it would be just my luck that it would happen to me. That is very negative thinking but I am afraid, nonetheless. I am also cranky and stressed out about losing my food "friends". I know that in a couple of months, I can still enjoy them, just in smaller portions but I am not sure I trust myself to have a bite or two of something I love (like a bagel) or that my body won't reject something that I love (like a bagel). Speaking of Bagels, I went to Einstein Brothers Bagels twice this week and loaded up on lox, asiago bagels, pumpkin bagel and bagel dogs. Now, back to the protein shake. I am using Herbalife Formula 1 shakes. They are really good and as much as I hate to admit it, really satisfy my hunger. They are not too sweet and you can use the powder in other recipes. I get mine from Ajay's Fitness (home of the 4-minute workout...no kidding. It's amazing). Nutrition products are available for shipping anywhere. I am also logging my food intake at Myfitnesspal.com. It's free and has a good library of foods to add to your food journal.

    Losing too much too fast

I had my surgery the same day and I am down 20 lbs. I lost 13 during the pre op liquid diet. Today was my first dayof pureed foods. I have had half of a scambled egg and a few bites of refried vegetarian beans and I am completely satisfied. I think we are where we are supposed to be.

i had rice and eggs because i am a vegetarian and my doc includes these in mushy food for a vegetarian
  17. There are a lot of soy protein bars out there but availability in grocery stores is another question. I can't give you any brand recommendations. I love Pure Protein bars but they are whey protein. Soy protein is an excellent plant protein for folks who are lactose intolerant or vegetarian. I'm neither one so I don't have much experience with soy. If you Google "soy protein bars" you can get a ton of brand options quickly - but then comes the hard part, trying to find them in stores. But you might get lucky and find them right away. Some nutrition stores will likely have them but in my experience they tend to be quite expensive for just about everything they sell. Pricing on nutrition items like protein bars, shakes and powders varies widely so it pays to shop. Taste varies widely as well so I wouldn't buy too much of anything until you've tasted it. There are some very good online stores who have reasonable pricing on just about all things protein! Good luck and please share the results of your search with us!!

    Comfort Foods... mmmm!

trying something new this year VegCooking > Celebrate a Vegetarian Holiday!
  19. When you say you don't eat these foods, does that mean that you don't like them or they don't agree? At this stage, those foods do make up several good ways to get in your Protein. You can puree just about anything to make something to eat. I put canned chicken with a little bbq sauce and pureed that. You can put vegetarian chilli in a blender and blend that, but you should strain it afterwards. You can also have cream Soups that have been blended and strained. Unflavored Protein Powder can be added to those. Just a side note, I would not recommend eating baby food. Those foods are manufactured for babies and you can't get the proper nutrition from them. Protein shakes at this stage is also a really great way to get what you need. You may want to open up a little bit and try different types and see if you can find one that you like. Good luck!

    Jenny Craig

I've done Jenny Craig and Nutri System, I thought the quality of food was really mediocre, Jenny Craig is probably a little better quality but I don't like the idea of eating processed food and there's a lot of sugar in their food as well--and salt. The idea of meat in a can is gross, anyway I'm a vegetarian and there weren't a lot of good choices. I think Weight Watchers is a much better choice if you're looking for a program, right from the beginning they teach you how to eat--and cook! Weight Watchers seems to deal in reality much more than the others. But whatever works for you is the best for you. I do my own thing and since I've been banded, I've never eaten so healthy. Because I can't put a lot in me, I am very careful and thoughtful as to what I eat. I want to eat quality food. I didn't go thru all of this to eat a donut. Good Luck with whatever you choose.

    Craving junk food!

Thanks gowalking but I liken my new nutrition to that of a vegetarian. I can get down things like collard greens, cabbage, green Beans, and oh Boston Markets seasoned Spinach (to die) but theyve gotta be cooked to mush. Vegetarians dont eat solid Proteins eithers. Oh and I love Peanut Butter. I do understand about the siders tho. But when I was able to eat solid proteins ie chicken beef fish, I lost nothing at all. I attribute 95% of my weightloss to not being able to tolerate these solid proteins.

    Become a vegetarian maybe?

I know there are a few vegetarians lurking around these boards. I can't imagine how hard it would be to meet my Protein requirements without meat. But technically vegetarians can eat eggs... just saying. If you are talking about cutting out eggs, would you be going vegan? That would mean cutting out dairy as well.
  23. I have three questions .... how much water can I drink at one time and will water stretch my pouch if I have two much too fast ... some one on the site posted that their doc told them no nuts ... does this include peanuts ... third .. how does a vegetarian like me manage to get proteins inside me without using shakes. I am sorry i missed out this information earlier ... I am 9 weeks post op and on solid diet stage ... I have lost 30 pounds till date and I still havent got a fill done ..... thanks
  24. Anyone else thinking of doing that? meat is getting pretty expensive (especially when you consider how much I waste), and I'm always paranoid about how well I cook it when I cook for just myself (for some reason, I'm not paranoid about it when I cook for other people) and wind up over cooking it, which isn't band-friendly. I'm trying to get to where I eat more vegetables and non-meat Protein like Beans and tofu. I'm not super-fond of the flavor of beans, but I don't have to worry about getting sick if I undercook them. And on the upside, I don't really have to worry about overeating with them, either, since they aren't exactly something I love, just something that I know I can eat. I still love meat, especially a very good steak, but I think I'm going to start limiting it to restaurants.

    Going vegetarian? Or low meat?

I buy smoky-flavored tofu at Wild Oats. During the pureed-food stage I blended Bush vegetarian baked Beans with barbeque sauce and I loved it. Later I tried it with the whole beans, but it didn't seem as tasty. If I liked to cook I would make dal, an Indian lentil dish. I do make a big pot of vegetarian chili (lots of beans) every so often and love coming home to a hearty meal that I can heat up in the microwave. I am usually really hungry when I come home and want to attack the easiest thing available. I love leftovers!
