    Failed Bander

I had a lapband placed on Oct. 10, 2005. I lost 80 pounds but found there were always foods I could not tolerate. Foods were always getting stuck, despite following all the rules. I had my surgery in Reno and moved to Los Angeles. I work in the health care field, and we have a bariatric program. I notified our bariatric supervisor that I was vomiting all the time. She sent me to my PCP. She sent me to a surgeon who was intimidated by the UM department. They did an endoscopy and the GI specialist said it slipped. Then, I had an UGI. They said it was just high. I continued to vomit all the time and the surgeon was afraid to challenge the MD in charge of UM. I chose to change medical groups and had another UGI because I knew surgery would never happen at my place of employment. Hindsight is 20/20. I should have insisted they submit it and then appeal. I had a physiological reason for the medical complications and could have qualified for revision. I saw a surgeon who knew to remove the fluid from the band. That stopped the fear that I would choke to death. I was getting ready to have the band removed and have a VSG when Kaiser notified me the doctor could only remove the band. I was told to see another surgeon at Kaiser and on June 24, 2011, I did that. I was 155 pounds instead of the 134 I had gotten down to. He said I had to have surgery that next Monday, but due to my esophagus being so thin with the possibility of erosion, he said the VSG couldn't be done for a year. I had the band removed and was I depressed. I was told I would gain 50 pounds and to be careful with what I ate. I have a surgery date finally, but I got a call on Friday asking me to phone the surgeon's office. Of course, my imagination is running wild. Are they changing the date or are they simply scheduling the pre op visit? I decided to repeat the bariatric classes. I am not learning much, but I figure anything new that I learn is a plus. I keep having to purchase larger clothes, and what I have for casual wear and professional wear for work is no longer fitting. I have feelings of self hate, and I know that is not healthy. Ultimately, I want to be healthy and lean. I know it will happen soon, but the waiting game is a nightmare. There is one other girl in my class that also had to have a band removed. Misery sure does like company. Anyway, that is my surgery of success, failure, and then the hope of future success again. I am glad I found this forum and will visit it frequently. Joyce
  2. I was in 4 nights. I was a revision from band to sleeve and I had a lot of complications. the surgery itself took over 4 hours due to scar tissue (from the lap band and from a previous spleenectomy). After surgery I couldn't keep anything down because the swelling in my stomach and esophagus was so severe nothing was passing through. I also developed pneumonia and m y left lung collapsed. They also thought I had a blood clot (which I did not). So I had a lot of complications and still was only in 4 days.
  3. I am finally meeting with the Surgeon on Thursday morning and would like help with what questions I need to ask him. I will write them down so I don't blank and forget until after the appointment. I am having a lapband to gastric sleeve revision. I've been told that this surgeon is excellent and I feel very comfortable with having him do the surgery. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    6 month diet requirement

Hello, I am in the same situation. I have Highmark Blue Shield and they have a policy for new procedures and one for revisions (I will post the revision policy) so I'm wondering if I will be required to do the 6 month diet again. I did it back in 2010 with my lap band but that was through Capital Blue Cross. I can't wait to get the band out, every day is a struggle with it! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  5. I had lapband at 18, going in for revision to RNY tomorrow at age 26! I did great on lapband until a slip last year
  6. That's going to be super individualized and no one can predict what it will be like until after.(But I personally don't dump often because I'm careful- sidenote I was revised from VSG to RNY for GERD) Ask about the statistics on GERD remission/recurrence after VSG from your Surgeon or research it yourself But really It will all come down to what the surgeon (and you) determine is the best course of action Good Luck 💙
  7. Hi guys, one week out from lap band revision to sleeve. I'm doing ok pain-wise, but I'm just so weak and even getting up off the couch to walk across the room makes me feel like I've sprinted. I was checked by my doctor and spent the day in the ER doing cat scans for blood clots, EKG, blood work. Everything was normal. But I am definitely not. I'm fine if I'm sitting on the couch, but moving around, even to prepare the small meals has got me exhausted. Is this normal? Is it due to taking in so few calories? What am I doing wrong? Yes, I'm taking my vitamins and meeting protein and mostly meeting liquids goals. I'm on Lovenox as a preventative for blood clots.

    Is it worth it?

What does "up front" mean to you? I paid $10,000 before I had surgery, so I guess that's "up front." But I did not pay until the day prior to surgery...so I didn't send any money ahead of me. Sue Oh, yeah...the adjustments (fills and unfills) are nowhere near as big a hassle as trying to find a size 32 anything while on vacation in a foreign country. And they're WAY less hassle than having an "RnY revision" for a bowel obstruction.

Hello Again, Long Time No See...

Can I ask if you revised from sleeve to bypass because of acid reflux? If so, did it resolve?

    Bypass or sleeve

I had sleeve and developed gerd.... Now looking at a revision.... Not fun going through all this again. Good luck on your Journey. I did not have gerd presleeve. I wish I had read more information prior to.

    Bypass or sleeve

Glad to hear your revision process is moving smoothly! You have FEPBLUE??
  12. Thank you for your posts. I had a slippage and problems with the band so Insurance will cover Gastric Sleeve revision to be done the end of Aug. first of Sept. but I had so many issues with my band both I and my husband are nervous. I had re-flux for so long especially at night even with just water, and I definitely don't want to go back to that. You have given me hope that it will be a good fix.

    Sleeve or lap band

Do not get the band!!!! The research says if you do your chances of another surgery are about 50% by year 10 and continue to go up thereafter because of complications. I personally never would choose a surgery with a 50% long term complication rates that are severe enough to require surgery. Unfortunately that data was not available when I got mine so I became a statistic and had my band revised to bypass last year. Love my bypass.
  15. Hi, My name is Judith and I lived in NJ, I started the process for revision from Lapband to VSG, I am very nervous and scare about the whole thing, this time I do not want to tell anyone because I know I will get all kinds of comments as I barely lose any weight with the Lapband my band slipped and it needs to come out and if I decide to have another surgery it need to be one procedure. I am afraid it will not work like the band, but at the same time I see so many successful stories here that it gives me courage to go thru with it. I just hope I am making the right decision.

    Band to sleeve in one?

For me blue cross covered either the removal or the revision due to complications. But once removed you would be starting fresh and need to be approved for the procedure.that means going through all the steps. For my revision the only thing I needed to go through was a demonstrated complication. Nothing else mattered. No BMI or weight or comorbidities needed.
  17. You need to call your doctor and get them to check you out. I was banded in April (4/10) - I had a lot of port site pain myself. Not knowing what to expect I let it go believing it was normal recovery pain. I went for my first fill at the end of May and found out my port had flipped. My pain was from the stitches being ripped and the port moving around. I wish I would have called when I suspected something was wrong - which was week one. I was late on my fills because of revision surgery. It delayed my progress - but everything has been corrected. You'd rather be safe than sorry.
  18. hey heartfire I have the same pinch and pain in my port area too. I was just wondering if those pinches ever went away on their own for you or do you still deal with the pain? Did you require revision surgery to correct the issue? Everytime I move in a certain way I can feel a sharp pinch and I was just wondering what this could be.
  19. How far out from surgery are you? The pain went away fairly quickly. It was b/c I was trying to catch my DD and I'm sure I pulled some stitches. My port actually moves now. Dr can manipulate it with his fingers. Really strange! If I bend over wrong it feels like it's trying to flip but when I stand up, it pops back in to place. Dr can still access it for fills so we're not worried about it. Once he can't access it, then we'll have to do a revision. I'm hoping that never happens! :Banane01: Anyway, if you're not healing from surgery and it's been awhile, I'd call my doc. You need to let him know what's going on and find out if it's anything to worry about. If you ARE healing from surgery and it seems to be pretty often that you're feeling this, I'd still call him. At the very least, everything is fine and it will relieve you mind but if there is a problem, it gets resolved quickly. Best wishes and let me know what you find out! Take care!

    Vertical Sleeve vs Band

    a) there is a "forum" on lapband to sleeve patients you might want to check that out- I have (for another week) the lap band and am getting a revision to a sleeve- I am NOT a lapband hater- I am not having my lapband removed because of slippage, erosion, malfunction etc. I have an auto immune disease and it is thought by my phsyicians that my body is "rejecting" the band as a foreign body in my body and not allowing me to get better physically from the auto immune issues. I was successfull with the band- lost 100lbs and about 89 inches all over- I have since gained back about 35 lbs total over the last year due to in-activity (no exercise due to back injury) and having band un-filled- My personal advice would be this- Unless you have only minimal weight to loose i'd say 45-75 lbs then consider the band- if you have 75+ lbs to loose then look at your other options- The studies when I was banded 3 years ago about the sleeve were not available and now that I am being sleeved there are new studies out about the band. I am reading now that the band is normally only reccomended for 4-5 years and that statistically most band pts have it removed and revisioned into something else. Only you and your doctor know what is best for you, your body and your future- You should not let anyone on here persuade or disuade you. We all have made whatever decisions we made on our own- Yes it is nice to have advice and opinions BUT you have to live with what you decide etc... There is a pain in the arse factor too about the band with fills, follow up etc- looking back it was a bit of a pain but not to inconvenient- AND there were a lot of foods I couldnt eat but I found new foods that I did like that I would have NEVER tried before.. So for me it wasnt a complete loss... Good luck with whatever you decide to do- I'm sure you will do great!

    I am not prepared!

Yes I was not quite prepared. I had my first appointment to discuss my band to sleeve revision and then 2 weeks later I was in surgery. And I had to make an unexpected trip across country for work in that 2 weeks. But I was determined to do it so I just went with the flow.
  24. I am new here as well and I am considering revising to the bypass from having the sleeve last year in May. I have vertigo and very much confined to my bed accept for when I am working, which is quite difficult. However, I have been stalled for quite some time and have picked back up 30 of the pounds I lost. I started at 326 and the scales 279 now, I am seriously considering the bypass. Some days I can eat more than I should and other days I don't eat nothing.I do a lot of bored snacking sine I work from home. I wold love to follow your journey and perhaps be each others support.

    Pregnancy after gastric sleeve?

Hi italianlady13, I am not a seasoned sleever yet but I am a seasoned bander, LOL. I am having a revision from a band to sleeve on 06/23/11. The more I am reading it seems as though I am one of the MANY people having a revision from band to sleeve. I know there have been many people who have been successful with the band but from my experience I do regret it. I did initially lose 60 lbs. with the band but that was only because I could not keep any food down and I pretty much lived off of Soup. When they would loosen the band then there was no restriction at all. I guess they never really found that happy in-between. I have been having the band since 2006 and in 2010 I got pregnant. My doctor loosened the band just a little but I gained a whopping 80lbs for ny pregnancy. My baby is now 7 months old and of the 80 lbs I gained for the pregnancy I have been able to lose 20lbs. This puts me right back where I was before I got Lap Band. I went to have an upper GI X-Ray done 2 weeks ago and find out that my band has partially slipped and it can slip completely at any time which if that were to happen it would be an emergency surgery. So now I am scheduled to have this band out and a revision to the sleeve. I always thought that somewhere maybe 25-30 years down the road the band would have to come out, I just never thought that it would be 5 years later. I will be more than happy to have this band out and to hopefully be able to eat a small amount of food and be full without throwing up every single meal. Anyhow, I am sure that you will choose the best choice for you and again everyone is different. I just wanted to share my story with you. Best of luck to you!
