  1. I agree with tek. Your surgeons office will be the advice you should follow. However, after I had my revision (for gerd) I drank liquids pretty well right after. I managed broth, crystal light and water for my meals in the hospital the first couple days with no problem. After that I was on full liquids (including pudding and jello) for 2 weeks then purées for 2 weeks. With a revision you won’t have a pyloric valve so liquids will likely be easier but as you move on you’ll feel restriction from food.
  2. I don't know about revisions, but at my clinic, they had the sleevers and the bypassers on the same eating plan.
  3. there are food restrictions the first few months, but after that, there aren't any limitations as long as you can tolerate whatever the food is (I can no longer tolerate really high-fat meals - and it's not uncommon for people to develop things like lactose intolerance after surgery - but you won't have any restrictions per se. I'm "allowed" to eat anything - and have been for a long time). I was never a big drinker even before surgery - I'd just have an occasional glass or two of wine. We weren't supposed to drink for the first year (according to my clinic, anyway), and I didn't at all for the first three years. Now I'm back to having my occasional glass or two of wine - by which I mean, maybe four or five times a year. So for ME, I don't notice any difference...other than alcohol hits me a lot faster than it did pre-surgery. taking vitamins becomes pretty automatic after the first few weeks. I don't even think about it anymore. I take a small handful when I get up in the morning, a smaller handful around dinner time - and my iron and vitamin C before I go to bed. complications aren't common and most are minor and "fixable". The most common one with sleeve is reflux, which in most cases (if you happen to develop it) can be managed medically. In severe cases, there's always the option of revising to RNY - although I don't know how common it is for it to get to that point. Might be worth asking if you're concerned. I didn't mind the puree stage. It was a relief after being on all liquids. If you're not crazy about the puree stage, just keep in mind that it doesn't last very long. You'll be on soft foods - and then solid - before you know it. it'll be pretty obvious to others the first month or two by how little you can eat that something is "up". I mostly just tried to avoid going out with people so the question wouldn't come up - or I'd suggest meeting up for coffee or tea or some activity instead of a meal. After that, for several months I'd just claim I wasn't very hungry and order an appetizer or some soup or chili. Now I'll sometimes still order that - or if I do get an entree, I'll eat half of it and have the rest boxed up. Pretty much the same as a lot of my never-been-obese women friends. No one can tell anymore that I've had surgery. Basically, this will all take some getting used to - it can be overwhelming at first - but after the first few weeks, it really isn't. And you're right - pre-surgery nervousness is pretty common. I've had four surgeries in my life, and I get nervous every time - but they've all gone off without a hitch!
  4. You're just over a year out from your revision. How are you doing? I'm looking at a sleeve to RNY revision just after the first of the year. What should I expect? Thank you!
  5. My revision was for GERD not regain so I can’t speak to that, sorry. What I have heard is that the weight loss from VSG to RNY can be slower and lower but every body reacts differently. I initially lost about 10/12 lbs but I have bounced back into my pre surgery range (I was already at my goal) I am happy to say that the symptoms of GERD have not come back so I’m very happy about that.
  6. I'm going in next Wednesday for revision from sleeve to bypass, very excited to start this journey again! For those who went through this already, I was curious about eating/drinking after the surgery. After my sleeve, they had me eating real food the next day, starting with eggs for Breakfast and then for other meals chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad, blended very smooth. I was able to take in about 4-6 oz per meal with no problem, also got my liquids and Protein in. I know that the bypass pouch is significantly smaller than the sleeve, so I was wondering what the diet is like after surgery. I know they want us to drink 64 oz of Water a day, but is that even possible with such a small pouch? Thanks!

    Dumping 😭😭😭

Thank you so much for this post. I'm planning on a sleeve to RNY revision right after the first of the year. I was wondering if I'd lose some of my regain (45 lbs), I have severe reflux and a hiatial hernia. If I can lose some weight on top of hopefully fixing the reflux and non-cardiac heart pain from the hernia, it will be a great 2022!! I am with you, dumping and not worrying about regain, at least not much, is worth the trade off!! Again, thank you. If you have any helpful hints about eating/getting through the first couple of months, I'd appreciate it. I cannot imagine eating baby food. What protein did you find easy to get down the first two weeks? Again, thank you!
  9. Did you have surgery due to regain or for medical a medical reason like reflux? How much have you lost since RNY? I'd like to lose some of what I've regained, but the reflux is the main reason I'm planning on getting a revision. I just want to get an idea of what to expect.
  10. That is odd! I am having revision to bypass to alleviate my severe GERD so this doesn't make me feel entirely too good! I hope you find answers with you endo/contact with your surgeon, good luck!

    I need guidance

First of all, I just want to say I'm sorry you're struggling and I hope you know you're not alone. The last 2 years have been brutal for a lot of us and there is no shame in any if it. That being said, before you move on to revision/bypass, have you reached out to your surgery center and/or dietitian? They should be able to offer some guidance on how to get back on track. Most suggest going back to the basics: weigh and track everything, prioritize protein, get your fluids in, move your body everyday, etc. If they aren't helpful or available to you, maybe ask your PCP for a referral to an RD? Sometimes we just need someone to point us in the right direction. Also, have you gotten support for your mental health & wellbeing? Making sure you've dealt with the junk internally is SO important. If not, that might be a really good place to start. A few sessions of therapy can go a LONG way. Maybe do some reading on emotional eating or whatever patterns you find yourself falling into. Knowledge is power! Revision is always an option, and there is absolutely no shame in pursuing it. But it's not the only option. You already have the tools, maybe you could benefit from some guidance in how to start using them again? Whatever you decide, we wish you the best! Sent from my SM-A205U using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. I received gastric sleeve in 2019 and was doing really well until covid hit. I lost my job and staying home when it first hit really made me depressed. Now I cant lose any weight i just keep gaining and gaining. Im trying to get some advice on if i should get revision surgery or bypass.

    Any December 2021 bypass people?

I am having a RNY revision on Dec 13. I had my first RNY in 2010, lost about 130 lbs. I’ve gained about 40 back and have developed a hiatal hernia, so I’m getting the hernia repair and he will be further reducing my pouch and tightening my stoma.
  16. Me! I’m having surgery Dec 3 in Atlanta. I had lapband in 2010, lost 90 lbs. It slipped and almost killed me in 2014. Had revision to VSG in 2014 and now revision to bypass bc of severe GERD. Have Grade D esophagitis and been on protonix for years. Can’t wait to not have GERD anymore. Have gained about 10 lbs since 2014 and my weight right now is 154. Hoping to get down to 130’s. We will see if that happens!
  17. @shopgirl Maybe.. I was there so I figured might as well. Fears? Complications. For sure. Fear of getting VSG and having to revise to RNY. Fear of something so permanent and not being able to go back. Like, if something does go wrong, I can't have a "re do." I was panicking thinking of them sucking my stomach out through my belly. I asked in my pre-op if I could pre-medicate and was told no, that they'd give me something in my IV. I told them I might not make it to the hospital. I wasn't joking. My husband was concerned that they wouldn't even operate on me considering I was in a huge panic.

    Re-sleeved

I know every surgeon is different, but I to- went in to speak with my original surgeon about a resleeve procedure and he advised that is was a bit of a tricky procedure and heavily weighed on whether there was dilation of the pouch and/or scar tissue. We decided against it and I'm currently in pre-op for revision to RNY (GERD, weight gain) Of course, do what you feel is appropriate for you, but make sure to ask a lot of questions because I didn't take a lot of things into consideration when bringing the idea forward. Good luck!!!
  19. I'm heading into month two of my initial consult on revision with my surgeon with being self pay. I'm hoping I can get a surgery date soon but really the time has been scheduling discrepancies. So like many have said, I think it really all depends on your surgeon/scheduling. Good luck!!!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Underwent a revision and hernia repair on Nov 5th. Lots of bloating but it’s getting better. Good luck everyone!
  21. I took biotin months before my first procedure with VSG to prevent hair loss and found that my hair loss was extremely minimal compared to others in the community. I still continue to take biotin to this day yet I'm still worried about hair loss with revision surgery coming up, haha! I hope it has helped you!!!

    4 yr Surgiversary!

It has been 4yrs since my (initial) WLS. Within that time I made great new friends, found love, had a revision, lost a parent, witnessed a pandemic from one of it’s epicenters, had plastics, had new additions to my extended family, relocated, had one child graduate from high school and more. Almost none of these things were weight related but somehow everything else in my life seemed easier to focus on without worrying about weight. My weight has been stable since I hit goal a few years ago with only minor fluctuations. I’m proud to say I will always identify as a WLS patient. I thought I wouldn’t feel like one years out but I find I am consciously honoring this lifestyle in the majority of my choices. I’m grateful we have this forum and I’m especially grateful to everyone in the WLS community that make it a positive and supportive environment to thrive in.

    Sleeve vs Bypass concerns

I started wanting the sleeve, then went to bypass, and am back to the sleeve (my doctor thinks that is the best option for me). At this point, I'm actually kind of terrified of bypass -- I just don't want it. I don't want a revision or anything, I want to steer clear of it. I'm not saying it isn't fantastic for others, not at all. So I worry (maybe weirdly) that having sleeve is opening me up to that possibility in the future.

HELP! Pre-op, Almost at Finish Line... Thoughts of Bailing

This does make sense. I'm now on my last day of the pre-op. Tomorrow I drink some sugary drinks and clear liquid. The sugary drinks are supposed to kick you out of ketosis. It's weird now today I was just trying to enjoy my protein drinks as a "last meal" since tomorrow it's changing again. I'm still pretty nervous. Re-reading this post. Trying to focus on the good stuff. Still wondering what I'm thinking with the stomach removal, though. Worries are mostly about my new insides and that I don't want to end up with a revision. I don't have to worry about a revision if I don't have the surgery.
  25. yes - I've been hanging out this and other boards for about seven years - and I've read several posts from revision patients saying the weight loss is slower after a revision.
