  1. Any time you tinker with digestion, it can affect how meds are absorbed (especially with the bypass or duodenal switch). Your bariatric team should have reviewed your meds to identify possible issues prior to surgery. Hopefully they will get it figured out quickly for you. My team did a good job of reviewing my meds and discussing the likely affect of my WLS but I still ran into trouble with the blood thinner I was taking (Xarelto). My hematologist tried to switch me to another med since the Xarelto requires a lot of food to be bioavailable but my insurance refused to cover it. So wouldn't you know it, I got a blood clot six months after surgery. Now I take injectable Lovenox because there's no requirement to have food with it. The Lovenox is more expensive than the drug my insurance refused to cover, plus they had to pay for my hospital stay when I had the clot. Go figure, right?

    Expectations!

November will be 6 months for me and I wish I was at goal but I won't stop til I'm there I'm looking forward to being able to yell out " goooaaaaaaalllll"
  3. I have to admit that I've been avoiding exercise since I got the band, but my weight loss has stopped and I think I need to exercise. The problem is that I had a double bypass 13 years ago; I have a bad heart valve; I smoke like a steam engine; I have a stomach hernia from the heart surgery, and I take care of my 86 year old mother and 7 animals. When I get home from work (I have about 120 students this semester), I just want to lie down. Also I will be 60 this year. I figure I can walk around the neighborhood with 4 dogs following me, but I can't get up the steam to do it. Can any of you talk me into walking? It will take much persuasion, but I'm open to persuasion.
  4. I'm happy to say I am down 42 pounds and a pant size. Also down in the 200s. It's been years since I've been there! I'm glad I did this!! I've had no problems with anything. I have another visit with the surgeon in March so I'll probably get lab work then. I'm so excited!! This losers bench is awesome and comfy!! 5. I originally had RnY bypass - and revised to a new RnY bypass. Further distallized the connection between stomach pouch and intestine; made a smaller stomach pouch, and removed some excess intestine from the first procedure. (The "Candy Cane" portion.)

Congrats, so exciting. I’m still in the process of completing my requirements. October 27th is my endoscopy appointment, October 31st I’m scheduled for the psych exam and November 15th is my last physician supervised weight loss program appointment. Praying I can get scheduled sometime in December [emoji1431][emoji1431][emoji1431]

  8. I had the bypass surgery yesterday and experienced no issues other than the abdominal pain you experience which honestly feel more Ike hunger pains. My question is how much were others able to drink one day out of surgery? I’ll be lucky to get in 2 bottles of waters today! And am worried about hydration here!
  9. I started at 377 in May of 2013. I had a 6 month monitored weight loss requirement that I took very seriously. I had surgery on November 21st at 303 lbs. My weight this morning (after a 15 day stall) was 270. Im looking forward to continuing losses! So far, loving my sleeve!

    B12 pre-op

I had RNY gastric bypass surgery. The recommended dose after surgery was 500 to 1000 micrograms sublingual B12 daily. It must be methylcobalamin. I found a bottle of 2500 microgram (mcg) B12. I break these in half, so my daily does is around 1250 mcg. Since the bottle contained 200 tablets. One bottle was more than a years supply. I have no idea what dosage they wish you to take pre-surgery. You doctor or nutritionist should have specified a dosage range.

    Hello I'm new here.

hi lisa,my name is peggy and i get my preop teaching on jan 12 and begin my preop liquid diet. i am scared...not of the surgery, but that i am making the wrong decision by not getting a bypass. i have a lot to lose but am relatively healthy. i hope we both are successful and enjoy a healthy, happy future. good luck!
  13. Congrats on your surgery date! I’m hoping I can have mines in November too. If I may ask, when did you finish your pre-ops and how long did approval take ? Timeline basically , if you don’t mind
  14. I was shocked to find out the results of my upper scope. Three polyps removed (all precancerous), Barrett's from bile reflux (no gall bladder) plus small hiatal hernia. Who knew!? My question is for others who may have had precancerous polyps removed prior to gastric bypass - are you concerned about the stomach and section being "invisible" to a normal EGD? A little nerve wracking to me...any feedback appreciated!
  15. Hey All... I'm Jacee and this is my story. I am 23, female and living in Australia. In 2008 I underwent Lapband surgery and went from (127kgs) 275lbs to (70kgs) 150lbs. I was initially very successful and I loved my band. In early 2010 I started suffering for undiagnosed gallstones, which meant that in turn my Lapband had to be loosened from unrelentless vomiting. My gallbladder was removed in December 2010 and by then I'd gained back (20kgs) 45lbs. In early 2011 I suffered from a Lapband slip and my surgeon recommended I undergo RNY Bypass. At first it was a very daunting decision that I wasn't ready to make, but within a month I changed my mind. My codependency to food had returned due to a constant feeling of hunger and an urge to eat after being so severely restricted for 3yrs. Our health system in Australia is very different to the US. We do have public health provided by our tax dollars, but it is a VERY LONG wait for elective surgery. When I was 20 and got my Lapband I didn't have private health, so I had 2 options - wait on the public waiting list - 3-5yrs or pay for outright. So I took the second option and $12,000 later I had a Lapband. When my Lapband slipped in 2011 I didn't have private health cover available to cover the RNY bypass, and my surgeon told me without private health he could only put me on his public wait list for revised surgery. It's been 10months wait now and I go in for surgery in under 4 weeks. I currently weigh close to 140kgs which is over 300lbs. My BMI is 49, nearly 50. The last 10months of my life have been devastating emotionally and physically. I have felt and lived success, but here I am now, bigger than I've ever been, ready to start all over. I'm literally terrified, but at the same time, I am extremely eager to get my "restriction" back. To feel healthy, happy and confident again. I'd love for my husband to know thin me, to feel beautiful for him. I also want him to know that in the next few years I'm going to be healthy enough to give him the family he so eagerly desires. I can't wait to fit into my AU size 12 - US size 8 - clothes again that are piled in boxes in my cupboard. I have so much to strive towards because I've been there, I've felt success, and now I want in more than ever. I wish you all luck and plenty of love on your journeys, I'd love to hear other stories. My surgery is in Brisbane Australia on the 25th of May 2012. All the best, Jacee
  16. Thanks sunflwr76 I have sadly had to learn over the past few years how many of my friends really weren't true... As soon as I got my band and lost weight and got confident, my friends didn't want me around anymore, even though I was the same person. These were generally the same people who knocked me for getting a Lapband on the first place. After all the drama last time, this time I have been straight up with my friends - I've told them if they don't like or support my decision of RNY bypass then they should bugger off now! WLS is far from the EASY WAY OUT!!! The amount of work put in pre and post op, the supplements you take to support your diet, the emotional toll it takes on your body as well as physical, the hospital stays when things don't go right, the realization that you can't eat a lot of the things you're friends are as well as making the conciencious decision to not eat those cheater "slider" foods as my surgeon calls them (high cal drinks, chocolate, ice cream etc) is NOT EASY! I wish that I had the physical and emotional willpower to just eat healthy and work out. But it's just not easy. Thankyou for all your well wishes... I will keep you all posted as it gets closer... I'm literally at the stage now where I am counting down the days until my liquid diet starts (12 days). I have to do 2 weeks of all shake diet before my op, and then the usual 2 weeks of liquids either... Been there and done it all before with my band, so I know the struggles ahead. I hope you start feeling better soon
  17. Hi I had mine done on November 3rd and each day is getting better. I was terribly nauseated in the hospital, couldn’t even keep water down but that was better after the first day. I can now eat jello just a few bites and sugar free popsicles and water of course. But I was wondering what kind of broths did you like best? I can’t tell if I’m hungry or hurting at this point lol but the pain hasn’t been bad just a little sore but the nausea was the worst part of it. I am going to look for a local support group but would love some help on here also. Thanks
  18. Yep it can make it worse and does for some.. There have been more than a few people here that had to convert to bypass afterwards because it was so bad... But some get better afterwards.. You will see some here that say it was "cured" and they feel great now! The studies on it are all over the place, just like the doctors recommendations. Some will treat and operate some will say that you should not have the sleeve and should do the bypass.
  19. I was banded almost 5 years ago. I lost 55lbs over a very long period of time and from what I honestly think was just hard work and not much help from the band. I hate my band. It hurts. I feel like it's violent when I get stuck (often) and I can feel my port all the time for FIVE years. Sigh. Eating is stressful and to top it off I've gained every ounce back. I sometimes eat 2 bites can't eat another bite longingly look at my healthy or even healthy-ish food and an hour later eat Cookies because I am starving. I feel like my eating habits have become worse because of the band and at this point I'm totally out of control. I'm excited about revising and petrified too. I would like the sleeve but I'm so afraid I will eat thru it like I did with the band. I hear "it's so different" but I wonder if that applies to people like me that ate around the band. Waited for food to pass then slid junk down. I suppose I could fail at the bypass as well. I'm wondering if anyone here has had a similar experience with the band and been successful with the sleeve or failed to lose with the sleeve as well. Any and all advise would be so appreciated!!!
  20. I had bypass after band removal and depending on your surgeon I think its not a concern. My surgeon made sure the cut was in a spot that would not be of concern. I think also it depends on what the extent of your damage is after removal of the band. I was recommended to heal at least 6 months after removal before gastric. I didn't have the procedures back to back. Good Luck :-)

  22. Welcome Grandma Jan and let us know if we can be of any help. I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. This article describes my experience after the surgery. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf
  23. Hello! I'm Janice aka Grandma Jan. I started my journey on June 30th and have been plugging through all the requirements of my program. I am so thankful to have found the team at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield IL. I was cleared last week by the psychologist, have 1 more visit with the nurse practitioner and have started my nutrition and physical therapy. Looking to be done with those by the middle to end of October. I'm excited, nervous and anything else I can think of. I will be 55 on Saturday and this is the best thing I can do for me! I have 7 grandkids and I want to be there for them and be able to attend all their sporting events and take them places without being unable to walk or get short of breath. I am happy to have found these forums. Even though we are all different it's awesome to be able to listen to everyone's stories both pre and post op. [sharedmedia=trackers:tickers:25125]
  24. I'm just a year out but couldn't be happier. I have a lot of restriction still and eating is almost like following a checklist to get my Protein and calories in. My BMI is now 22.9 and they don't want me to lose anymore. I have a medical background and did not want a surgery that changed my anatomy so drastically. The sleeve maintains normal anatomy including important valves (pyloric valve) of your stomach. My surgeon found that some of his bypass patients were able to force food past the small pouch and into the small intestine because there is no functional valve anymore. I would recommend the sleeve and consider a revision if you don't lose all you want. But some of us reach goal and beyond. (I weigh 12 lbs less than my original goal)
