  1. Hello Everyone: I am 4 1/2 years out from gastric bypass and am experiencing weight gain. It didn’t just start and I know it’s because of how I am eating. I have gained about 25 pounds from my lowest weight since surgery and need to get back on track. Head hunger is the problem. I am back on this site for support and advice. Any words of wisdom to combat the head hunger? Fortunately I still dump if I eat too much sugar but unfortunately I have no problem eating carbs.
  2. Hi, I’m 13 months post opp. My weight has been up and down lately and I gained nearly 10 pounds. How can I stop this from increasing? I haven’t done anything diet change wise so I’m not sure why this is happening and I’m starting to get worried [emoji30] Should I go to the gym more? I already go 3/4 times a week. Completely cut out carbs? Any helpful ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. I was thinking about calling my doctor and asking him what to do, he’s a little mean so I’m trying to avoid telling him bad news at all cost

    Foul Mood After Weighing

You KNOW this weight gain is not real...you cannot gain 3lbs overnight. It is water retention, or BM related and will go back down. Chill, you are doing great!

    Pre op weight gain

I gained 4 pounds at my last diet visit (still 3 pounds down overall at that point). I asked my surgeon to tell me honestly what she thought about my weight. She said she would say 2 things - 1 on the record and 1 off the record. The off-the-record response was that as an experienced surgeon she did not feel pre-op weight loss was always correlated with success afterward because pre-op we are still struggling and fighting against the hormones and the screaming hunger monkey on our backs along with all the anxiety of making this huge decision to have WLS and saying good-bye to certain foods and that lifestyle forever. The radical changes in hormones and hunger levels after surgery are the tool we use to lose weight combined with willpower - whereas before surgery we ONLY have willpower at our disposal. The on-the-record response was that she wasn't happy about the weight gain, and I needed to be extremely focused during the remaining pre-op period. She said I was still down overall which is an accomplishment because many patients struggle not to continue gaining. However despite that, she counseled me to strive to lose as much weight as possible because the smaller your belly at surgery the safer it would be. That was a month ago today and I've lost 13 pounds since then. I think she truly understood how I felt and both answers were what I needed to hear - that yes, it's hard to lose weight pre-op and don't beat yourself up, but also don't get complacent and strive every day to make good choices for yourself and your safety. That mix of answers worked for me! As far as insurance and whatnot, I was 367 on my consult day and 364 my last diet visit. They submitted the paperwork 12/18 and I was approved 12/22. So, no issue. Take it as a sign you need to be more focused, but don't go crazy with anxiety about it.
  5. I have my preop on Tuesday and I have gained 5 lbs from the last time I was in, I wanted to get some last minute bad choices in before I get it done and now I’m paying for it, are they going to give me a hard time about it? Anyone else gain just before too? I get it done a week from now, the 22nd of January. I have t been told to go on a liquid diet yet though, will they most likely put me on one for the last week?
  6. Officially freaking out...surgery is tomorrow morning!!! I’ve been trying to get ready and have most of what I need at home. Ventured out to GNC today to look for isopure (read it’s good during pos-op liquid diet) and wanted to look at some protein powder. I am really worried about getting my protein in and it is all very overwhelming. Interestingly, while I was trying to look at all the options, a couple with a baby came in and I overheard their convo (very small store). The lady explained that she’s always had trouble gaining weight and once she got pregnant and had her daughter (super cute btw [emoji846]) she thought her ability to gain weight would get better but it actually got worse. So the husband cut her off and said they needed a weight gain protein powder and basically after that, the conversation ended up being between the GNC employee and the husband. He wanted whatever had the most and best chance and it didn’t matter how much she had to drink in a day, even though she kept telling him that she would not be able to drink that much. To top it all off, he ended up choosing her flavor and a mix cup (even though she said she didn’t like the color). Sharing bc I was put off by the husbands attitude and felt bad for her. I could be completely wrong here but wouldn’t surprise me if he gets on her about her weight, maybe about not eating enough, her appearance, etc. Most of us are on the other side of that spectrum but it made me realize that we might be going through the same things in terms of insecurities and it was eye-opening. Because I am overweight, I sometimes look at skinny people and feel jealous but didn’t really think about any struggles they might have. Thought I’d share. Anywho! Lol. They left with a giant tub of protein powder and I left with nothing! Lol. I was so overwhelmed with the choices I couldn’t make a decision. So asking for a friend [emoji3] I hope you guys can give me some recommendations of what you’re using. I worry about fat and calorie content and maybe how often you’re using the powder.....and do I really need it?? Thank you!!!!

    Only 3 Day-liquid diet??

Thank you for this explanation! I was getting concerned too. I only found out about this group last night. I am having gastric sleeve surgery tomorrow morning. Today is my one and only liquid diet day. But reading other people I was getting so worried. I am at a lower BMI, but qualified for the surgery because of a list of co-morbidities. My weight gain is hormonal. Gained more than 100 lbs after having a hysterectomy 7 years ago. I went from thin, healthy and energetic to overweight and tired with diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. (It’s been a rocky 7 years.) I am 5’11” and am currently 258 lbs. Highest weight was 283. My goal weight is to at least get below 200. That is about when all the health issues started. Would be wonderful to get back to 150-160 lbs, but given my hormonal issues, that is probably a stretch.
  8. I was going to post this on mfp but I thought I’d post this here. I drink a bunch of water almost everyday. I know I drink a lot more then the recommended amount. I usually try to watch how much I eat and also exercise. Sometimes from day to day my weight fluctuates. Could this be due to too much water?

    Not what I expected :-(

I'm about five months out. In the past month, I lose two pounds and then gain it back. I've lost 40lbs same as you. The one major change I've made is I haven't been to the gym since the week before Christmas due to a sprained knee. I am cleared to go back to the gym next week. I'm sure that the exercise component is the thing stalling my weight loss. I still eat the same, proteins first, get my water in etc. If you cant go to the gym try any activity and see if that helps to jump start your weight loss. You are right there will be a weight gain but the gain can be minimal as long as we stay on top of it. Trust the process and trust yourself.

Thank you! Means a lot. I have to say I was getting discouraged reading some other forums but coming here reassured me there is successful stories and it can work. Not afraid of doing the work and sticking too it. I know what caused my weight gain and it was my responsibility. Carbonation and calories. Period. I'm ready! Thanks to all of you, I appreciate this place to share.
  11. Anyone else experience this? I have only gained 2 pounds but worried about gaining more. I haven’t changed my diet or anything so I don’t understand!

  13. Snacking on processed foods and eating fast food is one of the worst things that you can do while you are actively losing at the beginning. I know it is hard, but that handful of Cheetos is going to turn into several handfuls in the future if you don't try to put an end to it now. It takes just 14 Doritos to equal 140 calories. That is nothing. Saltine crackers are also very bad for you. Try to go without for the time being. When you are a little further along, do searches for protein pancakes. I will use those for sandwiches. I also use Flatout wraps on occasion. Anyway, the other posters advice about logging your food is sound. I use MyFitnessPal. It is tedious as first, but gets super easy in the long run as you already have your foods added. Try to purchase healthy snacks for the kids as well so that you will be less inclined to snack on bad things. Success or failure begins in your head. This surgery is going to help with the overeating, but that is it. It isn't going to stop you from eating junk food or other calorie dense foods. I once took a nutrition course that stated that if you list your main munches (snacking on salty and/or sweet treats, eating fast food, drinking soda etc.), each one of these can contribute between 20-30 pounds to your weight. I agree with that, and think that the weight gain due to the first two items can be lots more than the 30 pound limit. It is not too late to turn things around. You've got this, and you know what you must do to be successful. We are here for you. Just know that you deserve better than being overweight or obese. Society at large wants you to fail. Don't let it win! Good luck to you!

Problem with too much weight loss?!

BMI of 18. He is telling you you are going to continue to lose weight for the next 6 months. Does he have you on a supervised weight gain? Over the shelf weight gainer or medical grade? What are his instructions?

    It’s NOT a DIET!

Ya. My skinny friends all diet every day. - they watch everything they eat. Exercise. Drink juice cleanses. Do protein shakes and bars. Only indulge once in a blu moon if at all. Their diet is their lifestyle. And even though they have only needed to lose after baby weight gain- they live by the newest diets and exercise craze ( right now it’s peleton) - WW, Atkins , whole food—. They have done them all. They are just way better at dieting then I was! I consider myself on a diet. Because that’s what it is. So true about ‘mindset’ code word for making good choices. The newest code word is ‘grit’ - for not giving up. Whatever works works. Obviously we are trying to make good choices to that our life changes - hence lifestyle changes. - and dieting gives structure which for me helps with making the right choice or only choice. Naughty days?

It is common to do a little experimentation after surgery. That is how we learn. Some people can tolerate anything after surgery while others have problems and can tolerate very little. Weight loss is achieved during the short weight loss phase through meal volume control. The two operative words here are short and volume. So if you want to maximize your weight loss during this phase, you need to adhere to the program guidelines. I had RNY gastric bypass surgery and slid into the maintenance phase at 7 months. Sleeve patients lose weight at a much slower rate but can achieve almost the same degree of weight loss. Many do not transition into the maintenance phase until a couple years post-op. In general, there are two phases to weight loss. These are the weight loss phase and the maintenance phase. But there is another phase beyond the maintenance phase. This can occur around year 4. In this third phase the body becomes more efficient. Even if you follow a very regimented routine for diet, where your weight was very stable for a year, suddenly the weight begins to come back. If you are not very, very careful in this third phase, one might see major weight gain.
  17. Tell me more about your diet! Currently 6 weeks...want baby to get adequate nutrition without weight gain! 1 lb! [emoji847]

    Naughty days?

Enjoy your babies and your new body. I have 3. Gained and lost 80 with all 3. Then gradually came back to gain 80 because of stress causing me to not care anymore about food coming into my body. Although I ate healthy- salads protein healthy carbs- my portions were huge. ( plus had to go back to work full time for financial reasons- so no time to exercise like I used to. ) that’s how I gained weight. Gained weight. I also was never thin to begin with so before 80 pounds weight gain I was a Sz 12 looking voluptuous and quite happy- but at + 80 I was a cow! Too tired to wake up at 5:30 am to work out before job- then family stuff after work day. Now that I’ve lost over 60 pounds I have more energy to exercise and energy to wake up early. But kids are hard- always food around. Always cooking baking and packing lunches. I have def shared a bite here and there and even a slice of pizza at times. I try to do the best most of the time but do like to feel normal. Since I’m not a binge eater nor do I have food issues- just enjoy food and had a big appetite- the sleeve is working well for me as my portions are so much smaller and I don’t get sick with any foods so I do w joy food. ( except Chinese - which I don’t enjoy anyway). Im thinking you are similar to me so wanted to reassure you that it sounds like you are back on the right track again! You can do it! HELP!!!

I was sleeved May 25, 2014. In a year’s time, I lost 100 lbs. I was so proud and I was feeling better than I remember feeling in a very long time. Fast forward to February, 2016 and my husband and I took a trip to New Mexico, and I don’t know why it is, but any time we are on vacation or on a road trip, we feel like we have to eat every meal....all of us. That trip was the start of gaining weight. Early two year later, I’ve gained 30 lbs of the 100 I had lost. I’m terribly depressed about it, but I can’t seem to get myself under control. Eating is definitely a very emotional thing for me....meaning I stress eat, and this last year has been very stressful. I’m scared, beyond everything, that I’m going to gain all my weight back. HELP! Has anyone else experienced significant weight gain? I’ve started time and time again, from the very beginning, but it’s not the same. After surgery, we have no choice but to drink our meals or eat soft foods for several weeks post op, because we just cannot get it in us and swallow, but now that I have a choice, it makes it harder to stay on track. I still get full pretty quick, but I put in a little more than I should, and I had developed the bad habit of allowing myself to have a REAL Dr Pepper once a day, instead my usual Coke Zero and water. I was also eating more sweets. I’ve halted drinking the REAL Dr Peppers and stopped eating the sweets. I’ve been drinking my protein and eating meat/chicken....Eating as few carbs and sugar as possible and nothing! Has anyone been here? What have you done to get back on track? Please help!!! I’m so scared I’m going to gain the rest of my weight back....did I mention I was scared I was going to gain all my weight back? I’m even considering sleeve revision!
  20. Hi everyone. When I first saw a 3 lb weight gain I wrote it off as water weight or constipation. But the 3 lbs has stuck with me for five days now and I’m starting to wonder how it’s possible to gain weight this soon out. Did this happen to anyone else? I think my worry is intensified by the fact that I don’t feel much restriction. I can drink water pretty fast and have tried many soft foods and nothing makes me sick. I even ate one MM just to see, and I was fine. Please don’t judge. I was curious. That being said, I am not over eating and am consuming very few calories so I think I should be losing. Thoughts? I’m scared this won’t work for me

    Sugars or Sweeteners?

I strictly avoid processed sugars. I have a sweet tooth and that is one of the major causes that contributed to my weight gain over my lifetime. I limit myself to artificial sweeteners (such as Splenda and sugar alcohols), to natural low calorie sweeteners (such as Stevia) and to the natural sugars found in fruits and milk. I had diabetes. That went into remission when I left the hospital two days after surgery and I have not taken any diabetic medicine ever since and my blood sugar levels are good. I am almost 5 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. I test my blood sugar levels periodically. I read the labels of all food that I consume. I look at the grams of sugar per serving. If it is above 5 grams, I look at the ingredients. The ingredients are listed in order by highest percentage, and if the first 5 ingredients contain processed sugar (in any of its many forms), then I avoid this food, like a plague.
  22. My perspective from three years and seven months out from sleeve. My hunger and the way it made me feel was a part of why I had surgery. My health was my number one reason. Imagine having control over your food life. Food no longer controlled you. What would that feel like to you? Surgery will not take away hunger. You may not feel hungry or feel like eating in the first few months. You will have times of head hunger and real hunger. My hunger is not like it was pre surgery. It is manageable. Get in touch with a bariatric program in your area. Find out if they give seminars. Medical facts, risks and statistics are going to help you in your research phase. You are going to read many peoples personal experiences online. Some negative some positive. Your surgery experience is going to be unique to you. Many people are here for support that will be able to relate. It's normal to fear the unknown outcome of surgery. Common fears I hear are... Am I doing the right thing. risks of complications or death with surgery. will I fail another attempt of getting my weight off What if I have loose skin and what will that look like for me Hair shedding/thinning. It will grow back. what happens if I have a weight gain Will food be as good as it was (addiction) will I feel satisfied on smaller portions of food. Can I have discipline and control of food. I couldn't have lost this weight without my sleeve. I'm thankful. For me I have no regrets or complications. I bounced back quickly from surgery. I had to learn to control head hunger and deal with emotional/stress eating. I had a gain after goal and I worked it back down (136 pounds today). This is still work after goal. If you go back to old behaviors you will gain. This is about learning a new lifestyle. This is about getting your health and your life back. You can have this long term if you are willing to change and work for it.
  23. New year ... new start. Im looking for help/guidance. Had surgery in Nov 2012. I weighed 289 day of surgery. Got down to as far as 214 lb and then just hit a plateau. Which I was fine with. I did more than I ever did. Loved to exercise to relieve the stress of eating etc... Then I was injured couldn't exercise as much. Starting getting depressed and making bad eating choices again. Now Im up to 235 lb. I started back with kick boxing but started getting dizzy and very out of breathe. I figured I had been out of the game for awhile and thought I was just out of shape. I went to get a full work up and physical. Discovered that my B12, Iron and white blood counts were very low and therefore making me extremely anemic. Had to get a few iron infusions done. Dr told me I could resume workouts until levels were up. Levels are still where they need to be... taking vitamin D and b12 supplements now. Dr told me my metabolism is very low and therefore not burning off calories like it normally would. Im feeling at a loss. I want to be back at where I was. Finding it hard to get motivated. Anyone else have a similar experience???
  24. FWIW, I am over 50 and the weight does start to add health concerns over time. For me, its osteoarthritis in my knees and hips, severe sleep apnea, high BP, high CH. Add menopause, because it exacerbates weight gain. And I'm pre-pre-diabetic. So....consider going to a seminar and starting the process -- nobody says you have to have the surgery in the end, a fair number of people on this board drop out before they cross the finish line. As part of the process, my PCP and FOUR specialists think its a great idea for me. Best wishes to you!
