I'm struggling with muscle loss.
PorkChopExpress replied to highfunctioningfatman's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I'm losing muscle mass as well, but I knew I would. I get 80-90g of Protein daily, but with the calorie restriction it's inevitable that we're going to lose muscle mass. You just have to do what you can do mitigate it somewhat, and that's by getting 90g or more of protein and weight training. Sounds like you need to boost your protein intake a bit, I'd get some of the flavorless protein like GENEPRO and mix it with things like chili, etc... Or just a drink. It's 30g of protein in one TBSP serving, so it's a big help. Also, a VERY common misconception on this board is the "carbs are bad, mmkay?" They're not. In fact, a big part of the reason the body catabolizes muscle tissue for energy is a lack of other easy sources. Fat is not an easy source of energy for the body...it's the slowest place for it to pull energy from, actually. Before you lift, you should consume a good amount of carbs. Then protein after. Your body will pull energy from the carbs you ate, and use the protein for muscle maintenance. The good thing is, muscle has memory and when we reach our weight loss goals and can switch to a slight caloric surplus to add muscle mass, it will come back on more quickly than it would for someone who never had it. -
I'm struggling with muscle loss.

GENEPRO is crap. You want to have Protein traces in your blood for the check ups, that's fine. You want to maintain or build muscle, use whey. Sent from my phone. Please forgive brevity and spelling. -
Post-op, I just couldn't do Protein Shakes anymore - ordered Genepro based on recommendations and it might be just what I needed. I've been enjoying my mushy foods but couldn't get enough protein and Isopure protein drinks are somewhat disgusting. I just added a scoop of Genepro to roasted butternut squash and it's delicious. I'm hoping my stomach agrees with me.

Genepro Unflavored Protein
jess9395 replied to KristenLe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The biggest one is that they claim 30g of Protein from 15g of product and since grams are a weight measure, not quite sure how that happens. Read this thread or do a search http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/372406-genepro-too-good-to-be-true/ Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Getting sick of protein shakes--literally
ShelterDog64 replied to magoosmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm feeling you...my surgery was June 21st as well, and I'm only using RTD Protein as creamer in my decaf coffee. I'm adding a scoop of GENEPRO to my coffee, so that gives me 30g plus maybe 5g from the RTD at Breakfast. I either drink a Syntrax nectar (23g) or add another scoop of Genepro (30g) to a glass of Water with some flavored stevia later in the day, and another to my refried Beans or Soup at lunch or dinner. That gets me to 90 or nearly there, so the third meal is just bonus protein for my day. I'm really impressed with the Genepro product, and I can't tolerate any of the Isopure powders right now :-P -

How much protein do you get in a day?
QueenOfTheTamazons replied to cuteNATL's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 30 days post op. I get a min of 60 but aim for 80. In the last week I was averaging 75. My main source lately has been a shake I have for Breakfast made of 5oz fairlife milk, 5oz fairlife chocolate milk, 1 tbs GENEPRO and 1 tbs PB2. Its 242 cals and 48g Protein. It takes me 2-3 hours to drink it, but most cause I forget its there when at work. HW 385 SW 359 CW 338 Sleeved 10/5/16 -

Help! I'm so scared I've spent all this money for nothing
gustavio posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am so depressed. I am not a whiner or crier but I've been so upset this past couple weeks. I think my surgery is broken. I was sleeved aug 25,2016. I immediately lost 16 lbs before September came. Then my September weight loss for the ENTIRE month was 11lbs!! ONLY 11lbs! Those 11 lbs were the first 3 weeks of sept because I haven't lost a pound for the last 2 weeks! Every day I step on the scale and cry again. I know I shouldn't weigh myself daily but I'm obsessed and cannot help it. I use GENEPRO and get my Protein in, but fluids are not up to par. I eat 3-4 times a day and no Snacks except a couple days I snacked on a piece of turkey Jerky but once the bag was gone, I haven't snacked at all. I don't know what to do. I'm so scared this won't work and I'm destin to be overweight. I was so excited to do this and read success stories and looked at pics. I had such high expectations. I expected to be 45 lbs down by now. I'm only half there so I feel like I'm failing. Can I hear from some slow losers that have long term results? I need reassurance badly!! Is there anyone this surgery just didn't work for? Come one, come all, I need to know what I'm dealing with. Love this site, it's so informative. I've gotten more advice and help through this site from anyone anywhere. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Help! I'm so scared I've spent all this money for nothing

My doc didn't give me a guideline for calories but I'm not getting more than 600-700. Fluid is suppose to be 64oz. But I'm probably getting 40oz. I've never drank much. Before surgery and as long as I can remember I would go every other morning and get me an unsweet 42oz peach mango tea from the station and that lasts me all of 2 days. My husband says I'm a camel. Now I try harder to drink and only Water tastes good to me now so I'm drinking what I use to drink in 2 days, in one. My docs protein goal for me is 64oz. Which I take 30g of GENEPRO twice daily and then count on my diet to get the other 4 grams. So I'm sure I'm exceeding my protein goals. Thank you for the encouraging words. I have never been one to need them and constantly need validation but this has been a trying time for me. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Had surgery on Dec 27th. Every day does get easier. My main issue now is one incision that still hurts when getting up and down or turning. I have found that the flavorless protein like genepro is so much easier then trying to get the protein shakes down. Can mix with anything from water, to soup, to yogurt. I am lucky no nausea or vomiting. Gas pain was horrible but it is better now. I am experiencing very low energy levels I guess body just adjusting to new diet and healing. Ready to be healed and start losing weight.

I started green tea after surgery, didn't do coffee again until 2 months out. But I had a quick surgery, no complications, kept it slow to see what I could tolerate. I don't do cream in coffee, but I have taken to putting half a scoop of GENEPRO in my coffee with stevia and Vietnamese cinnamon.

Protein supplements - What is the highest # of protein with the lowest volume to have to drink?
Sai replied to LittleLizzieLilliput's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can't drink any Protein drink, pre-made or otherwise. I'm a big fan of unflavored protein if I find myself running low on protein. Maybe get some unflavored protein and add it to your purees/drinks. I use GENEPRO but others here like Isopure and many others. -
I was sleeved on 10-21-14. The first week I had no trouble getting my protein and fluids in, the second week, there didn't seem to be enough hours in the day to get my fluids in and I couldn't tolerate even half of one protein shake. Someone here recommended Genepro Protein, so I ordered it. In the meantime, I quit bothering to even open a protein shake...it was just wasteful as I couldn't drink it anyway. It really weighed heavily on my mind. This past week my nutritionist put me on soft, well chewed food (not breads rice, or pastas yet, but pretty much anything else as long as it is chewed well). And, my Genepro arrived yesterday. I thought "thank heavens...I can eat food AND I have protein that I can mix into my food! Now I can be compliant with my protein intake" Um, not so much. I had been collecting recipes that I could eat at this stage, so I started making a new one everyday since Tuesday. I've not been fond of any of them...and I've made a variety of different things. I can't eat any more than 1-2 Tbls per meal or snack, no matter what it is. And it's not because I'm "full", it's because the taste of ANYTHING literally repulses me. I have to mentally prepare myself before I swallow because it just feels soooo disgusting going down. So if I can't eat that means I can't mix my protein, and I'm obviously not eating enough to get my requirements through the food. Well, this evening I decided that maybe I just didn't really like the new recipes so I decided to make something I've made for years and has always been a favorite. Nope. Same scenario. I literally cannot stand food. I am getting depressed because this isn't going the way I wanted. I have the greatest desire to be compliant and I TRY, every single day. It's not about wanting something different or "cheating", it's that I can't eat. My dietician says "you're early out...just keep trying, it'll get better". *sigh* I guess, but I feel like a failure, even though I'm losing (OF COURSE IM LOSING! I'm starving myself to death...this isn't what I wanted!) sorry for the long vent, but I'm so upset this evening.

Looking for people that had their surgery on January 24th or close to it.
dvmp61 replied to Misty Barnhart's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes I'm on liquids until day 16 *sigh* I'm still trial and error with everything so far the only things I like are sf pudding, fudgesicles, and my crystal light, still trying to find a Protein powder I like because as of now I use GENEPRO but don't know if I should trust it has 30 grams or not. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App My doctor's office recommended a product called unjury. You have to order it from their website, but they deliver quickly. I like them because they have a sample pack for about $21, and you get 2 packets each of their Protein shakes, 2 of their chicken broth, and 2 unflavored. The kit also comes with a mixing plastic tumbler and a thermometer. This way I can try it inexpensively. So far, I've tried the soup and it was good! Just a recommendation. In my case, I firmly believe the Omeprazole therapy, in my case it IS NOT GASTROPROTECTIVE! Told them so before surgery , did they listen? Nope, just like spitting into the wind, not a satisfying conclusion! Both my Grandfather and my late husband's Grandfather had the same motto, 2 different languages, but exactly same meaning THEM WHO DON'T LISTEN, GOT TO FEEL! The difference- they didn't listen, I was the one having to feel the pain. And , oh yes, it does hurt! Spasms and when not actively spasming , an abiding ache, internally where you cannot rub it to make it better! Soups, vary the broth , vary the tastes if you can, season it a little if your tummy tolerates. Can't find. a taste you enjoy in commercial soups, construct and blend your own. Had 3 months of TPN myself, November 2018 through February 2019. Never been able to turn my back on Protein shakes, find a taste you like, I do Strawberry Ensure High Protein, the one with only 160 calories. Go back to plain broths if necessary, found after 9 months of Monkey- doodling I am beginning to loathe chick broths, so I do need or Wal-Mart Vegetable , not that expensive. I enrich all things not protein high with Genepro powder, not necessarily the best but I got a very good deal on it, had a coupon for it and Body Fortress both. And I'm almost always around here, 9 and 1/2months, lost 120+ pounds since surgery, story still being told, not sure what next chapters are going to be like, but I hold out optimism!
