    Artificial Sweetners

I'm 4 weeks and 5 days. Wednesday will be 5 weeks. The only thing I use it in is usually oatmeal/cream of wheat, plain Greek yogurt, decaf green tea or black tea. All I use is just half a packet of sweet n low or Splenda in each. I guess I should've added with the powerades, I have to dilute it half water half powerade. Still doesn't really make sense though. Also, sugar free pudding and jello upsets me. Sugar free creamsicles. Last night I bought a quest bar...I was craving peanut butter and regular PB is filled with fat so I had a TINY bite...I mean pea size bute...of a peanut butter supreme quest bar and YUCK. It tasted like artificial WAX. I will not be eating those. So as of today, I'm cutting out all SF "sweets" and sweetners and just going to drink/eat things the way they come.
  2. I have scrambled egg with turkey sausage crumbles; strawberries and blueberries: and one slice whole grain toast for breakfast Usually a Greek yogurt for a snack Grilled chicken or chicken salad with a salad for lunch Either a Protein drink or cheese and nuts for snack A grilled or roasted protein with salad for supper. Usually a SF Popsicle in the evening. I generally get between 750-900 calories a day; between 60-80 protein; between 50-60 carbs and try keeping my fats between 20-30
  3. The first thing I had was Taco Bell refried beans. I couldn't finish half of it. I eat a lot of Greek yogurt with PB2, cottage cheese, smoothies, protein shakes, and soup.
  4. Once you make the sincere decision to lose weight and get healthy....everything will fall in line. Using myfitnesspal.com is a cheap and easy way to track your calories, weight and exercise. I stress that it's free....and super easy to use. Nothing will motivate you like success will. That being said...go ahead and lose weight now. There are simple diets to follow and you will be acclimating yourself to the way of eating you'll be doing for the rest of your life when you are post-op. The simple diet consists of chicken, fish, meats, Greek yogurts, fresh vegetables, some whole grains and some cheeses and maybe nuts on occasion. Measure your food so you can input accurate amounts into the myfitnesspal tracker. Keeping the carb count down and eating at a calorie deficit (versus your bmr ) will absolutely lead to weight loss. Throw in some frequent walking and you are going to add to effect. Getting your mind wrapped around the needed changes and getting used to following a plan now will really help you later on. You are going to do great.
  5. At six plus months out, I can eat 3-4 ounces of dense protein and a few bites of vegetables. That is for dinner which is the largest meal of the day. Breakfast is primarily a protein shake and lunch is leftover protein wrapped in lettuce leaves. Snacks are yogurt or protein bar, maybe some nuts or cheese.

    What are your best tools?

I use loseit app and the fitbit is my best friend to keep on track with my activity. I also pack food- cottage cheese and yogurt are my go tos.. Then I make sure to eat something else at night when I have more time and access to appliances..

Calorie intake at 5 weeks PO

Carbs are tricky but you need them. Another thing to be careful of is low blood sugar. It is not fun. Kind of feels like anxiety. There are basically 3 types of carbs. 1)Dairy, 2)Whole fruit and vegatables, and 3) grain and potatoes based. Rather than worrying about a daily total, try to keep the carbohydrates from grain products (cereals, crackers, chips, potatoes, etc) between 30-60 grams daily. As far as fruit 2-3 servings/day is recommended (30-45 grams carb) Dairy- 2-3 servings/day (24-36 grams carb) This gives you a grand total of 90-140 carbs per day. 60 grams total is not enough to allow good carbs, so I would definitely say to aim for more than that. Also remember that “fiber” is technically a “carbohydrate” but actually produces no calories so they can always be subtracted. As for calories, I track mine using fitbit. My doc likes to see my calories between 1200 and 1500. I keep it closer to 1200. For the first few months I as closer to 1000 each day. My typical daily menu is 1 greek yogurt with 1/4 cup of oat meal mixed in, 2/3 cup of chili for lunch, 4oz of lean Protein and a small serving of vegatables for dinner. 2 pieces of fruit for day time Snacks. This takes me to around 900 calories which leave me a bit of room for a evening snack. Remember to get 64 onces of Water in. Water is real important in many respects.

    Help!

I took my pills this morning like I do every morning and I have like a severe burning in my belly and am dry heaving! I tried eating some yogurt to cool my tummy down but it's not helping. Has this happened to any of y'all??
  10. I just noticed that every time I eat something rather it's tuna or yogurt. Within 30 minutes I have to boo boo. Is this normal with gastric sleeve? And sometimes it's a slight burn to it too, I know tmi lol
  11. Ok, not stomach hungry. I'm full of liquids, though I'm struggling to get in the 100 gms per day my surgeon recommends. I'm varying my intake with things on my list--Protein shakes, Jello, sugar free pudding and yogurt, broth, even 4oz a day of V8, which is my favorite. But my mouth is craving real food. I'm not a sweets person in general, I like protein and complex carbs, and I'm just so un satisfied. I'm dreaming about food, I would give my right arm for a piece of cheese. My surgeon recommends no carbs for a year, I can live with that I think, but I want to eat something real! I've read so much about people who feel n hunger at all. While my pouch feels full, I wouldn't describe this as "no hunger". Any suggestions?

    Food ideas

Surgery on 3/2 and back to work today (3/9). I brought a premier protein, water flavor drops and bone broth with me. I think I can start purées today but I didn't want to try them for the first time at work. I have apple sauce and greek yogurt tubes (2oz tubes) as well as some baby food bananas at home in the fridge. I may hold off on that though and stick to liquids till next Monday. I have a big leak fear.
  13. I'm doing purées right now too, Greek yogurt, mashed potatoes, Popsicles and lentil Soup have been my staples. I tried a 1/2 scrambled egg today. And couldn't even finish that. But can finish one of those light & fit 4 oz yogurts in 30ish minutes. It's weird.
  14. Ladies, you really need to get your protein in if you want to lose weight. Mashed potatoes are not what you need at this point. Yogurt , soft cheese, protein shakes should be the majority of your intake at this point. Small sips and walking in between is what helped me get it in. And sip, sip, sip that water!

    Exercise and Hunger

This is kind of funny because after I swim (1 hour) I am starving! My mother who also swims actually feels less like eating. Shrug. So I always plan to eat afterwards. Not sure if others will disagree (only have had one fill so no restriction) but before I eat I have a drink of water. I then eat my meal. Since I don't have restriction I usually feel like I could eat more (my doctor says 3 oz protein, 1/4 veggie, 1/4 startch). You might want to have a go to snack that after you've eaten and then waited 10 minutes that you can have if you are still ravenously hungry. Here are some thoughts grilled chicken, cheese stick, veggie, fruit. I live alone so I have the option of just not buying foods that I should'nt be eating. A greek yogurt with fruit would also only be about 160 calories which would be better than the cookies. Also how about sugar free pops?

    Pre op Diet

I started a restricted diet 2 weeks prior to surgery. The day before surgery is liquid only. A day on the restricted diet looks something like this: Breakfast - Carnation Instant Breakfast shake, no sugar added, medium piece of fruit; AM Snack - 1/4 cup 1% milk, 1/2 cup veggies; Lunch - 1/4 cottage cheese, 1/4 cup veggies; PM snack - medium size piece of fruit; Dinner - Another Carnation shake, 1/4 cup veggies; Bedtime snack - Plain Greek yogurt. There are a few variations I can work with, but this is pretty much it.

    Should I have high expectations?

Victor, welcome. . first off let me congratulate you on your decision to have the VSG. . second off i'm glad you found us, we are always here for you if you need us. . . well victor, let me tell you. . in 7 short weeks after my surgery i have lost 53 lbs. . . so you see it is dueable. . however, you get what you put into it. . . as a medical person you understand that. . . the first week or so after surgery it's feels really weird, can't explain it, but it does . . . you will have to relearn to eat, and drink again. . . in the beginning i hated my sleeve but then got used to doing what i was supposed to do. . . the sleeve doesn't allow you to gulp fluids anymore, you will be full (turkey dinner full) after a few mouthfuls . . . for example here is what my day menu for today consists of. . . Breakfast Protein shake and a baby teaspoon of flaxseed sugar free, low fat Peanut Butter. (200 calories) Lunch: 3 slices of 98% fat free ham (60 calories) Dinner: 2 oz extra lean ground hamburger, made into tiny little meatballs soaked with teriyaki sauce 3 small brusselsprouts (165 calories) Evening Snack: 4 oz Dannon Light N Fit yogurt frozen (60 calories) Total calories for the day 485 . . . I drink alot of Water along with decaff coffee. . . I try to keep my calories anywhere from 500 - 600 per day no more. . . You will do great as long as you follow the doctor orders and ignore the head hunger. . . once you get over that you will just fly through the weight loss. . . they say it takes 30 days to change a habit. . . well this overeating thing has been a bad habit of ours for a long time, takes alot of work to change it. . . but it can be done.! Good luck:biggrin0:

    New and different case

I appreciate everyones responses. To clarify things, i have gone to counseling, i have been to an eating disorder center, i have tried Atkins and many other diets. I know that it's not a lot of weight that i am talking about. However, someone mentioned about me being proactive about doing something about it ahead of time... and that is my point. I don't have a huge appetite, it's not the thought of food or looking at food and wanting it, it is my actual stomach feeling hungry and empty ALL THE TIME. Even after i eat a substantial amount of food, an hour later, my stomach is growling (not gurgling from digestion) but actually feels hungry again like i have an empty pit. Counseling doesn't fix this. And i CHOOSE to eat large amounts of vegetables so that i don't end up 300 pounds or more and risk other health concerns. Eventually this problem could lead to severe obesity, and that is what i am trying to avoid. I do not want a smaller stomach to down a 2000 calorie milkshake. I want to be able to consume a normal sized meal, and be done. Not feel as if i have eaten a grain of rice as others sit around me stuffed. Right now there is a physical problem- the stretched out stomach, and it hasn't shrunk on it's on through liquid diets or other methods. I see this as being the only option that could help me long term. I eat very healthfully and enjoy healthy food, it would just be a dream to be able to sit and have a yogurt and a sliced apple and it hold me over for a few hours as opposed to 6 yougurts and 5 apples and still that hunger nagging at me. Hopefully someone understands where i am coming from.

Am I Really On My Own Now?

Yes, you definitely need to be more vigilant right now. Remember that even with no fill, you're still supposed to be eating small amounts. It's ok to have yogurt or something between meals to help with the hunger, but try to keep a grip on how much you're eating. As far as the pains, I don't personally know, I didn't get any at all.

Post-op diet: how long did you do liquids?

I did two weeks of full fluids post-op (pudding, cream soups, yogurt, shakes, etc.) and 2 weeks of soft foods and then moved to solids on week 5.

    Packed Lunches

My lunches usually contain a variety of the items below. I usually bring more than I will eat, so I can have what I feel like and then just repack the next day what I don't eat. I'm still adding new items to this list as I progress with trying/handling new things. it proves a challenge for me to pack lunches as I use to just eat out every day pre op. I have had a few things from fast food, but it's hard to find anything that you can eat. Jimmie Johns can makes all of their sandwiches into an Unwich, no bun - lettuce wrapped. I tried the turkey/ham and it was fabulous... it took me all day to eat 3/4 of it, but my pup was happy to get the rest at the end of the day.. also you can order a side of beans at taco bell which satisfies if you have no other option. My lunches contain an assortment of: 2 oz tuna salad (fixed as if it was going on a sandwich) deli meat or some other sort of meat hot soup in thermos olives pickles light string cheese cherry tomatoes apple orange P3 (deli isle) meat/cheese/nuts pistachios 2-4 oz lowfat cottage cheese 2-4 oz yogurt 2-4 oz protein sf jello (unjury.com has recipe) 2-4 oz vegetable, I like green beans 2-4 oz dole no sugar fruits I ordered some of the bariatric pal protein chips in a variety. I liked about half of them, but will not be attempting this again until I reach maintenance stage. I found myself eating more than one individual size bag a day or grazing through more than one portion at a time. It brought out old habits in me, and I don't need that kind of struggle with self control right now. Be careful with these my nutritionist also says they are slider foods, that dissolve fast and slide right through to the intestine, more calories for less satiety.
