Tell me about your surgery timeline pls
KatFight replied to Nikki P.'s topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
*FSA So, I lost one month from when pulmonologist did my PFT to when my second appt was, one month apart and another approx. month from second visit to when I discovered the sleep center never requested a pre-approval from my ins. And, by the way, my PFT was perfect. Why not give a sleep study slip the day of the PFT? Later found out that staff was abrasive and unwilling to work with hospital bc the dr has a financial interest in the sleep center! This was never shared with me up-front. Please know that you do not have to go to exact dr your doctor refers you to. Ask dr. if you’re unsure. I expected top-notch care as this was a referral and was in dismay. Believe me, I told my surgeon this too. -
Tell me about your surgery timeline pls
KatFight replied to Nikki P.'s topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi. I had my first visit end of July, 2017 and was required to have 3 months of nutritional counseling but the nutritional counseling was normally 6 months so I had 2 nutritional appts/month. I called all doctors (pulmonologist, cardiologist, gastroenterologist, mental health nurse practitioner - I was already seeing her so she wrote my letter) and set appointments. All were set pretty quickly except the pulmonologist whose staff I later discovered were rude and unprofessional. The pulmonologist first requires a PFT test. I couldn’t get my second visit with her until a month later. Major delay. Then, her staff advised me that they’d have the sleep center call me to set up a sleep study. No call. I kept checking in with their office for 3 weeks. When I called the sleep center, nobody picked up the phone nor was there voicemail. It was all strange. I explained the urgency as I’d everything done by my next surgeon’s visit except this bc I was losing time waiting just to schedule the sleep study. The office staff’s excuse was the center was waiting on insurance. I called my insurance, not true. The sleep center had never requested pre-approval for the sleep study in early September. Now it was the end of September. I wrote a complaint to the BBB. And I scheduled with my nearby hospital. The pulmonologist staff refused to work with the hospital staff! It was not true either. They are supposed to. Oh, and they also wanted me to pay full-price for my visits upfront. Over $150 when I have a $40 copay which I pay with a FAA card. The BBB lit a fire under the sleep center’s a**es bc I got a call a week later. They were willing to do a home study in 2 days. I didn’t want to initially bc they were lousy but I wouldn’t be able to get everything else done before the end of the year which was important financially. They also got me in to see a different pulmonologist the following week. It was clear that I wouldn’t have this done by the end of October bc of the mistakes of the first pulmonologist and this sleep center. I pushed hard...constant calling to get my paperwork done. Many times I’d hear, “I’ll call you later today.” Or, “I’ll have that done tomorrow.” It was NEVER true. My surgery was 12/28/17 but it would have been in November if the original pulmonologist and the sleep center didn’t screw up so badly. -
Considering cancelling surgery
KatFight replied to erika702's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi @sideye. You were fortunate that your liver was no issue but to tell someone who is pre-surgery that there is no concern in that bc of how your dr did things is ill-advised. My surgeon is the founder of a Center of Excellence and has had to sew many patients back up who failed to follow directions and their livers were too large. Be careful of dispensing advice contrary to medical advice. Very dangerous. -
Considering cancelling surgery
KatFight replied to erika702's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi @erika702 When it’s said that a person will not hungry after surgery, that may true for some; however, it’s definitely not the majority. Initially following surgery, the stomach becomes full so easily that you may not. Oftentimes, hungry rises in the weeks following or after eating carbs. (I saw my surgeon yesterday and told her that I ate something not on the list - a small piece of a breadstick from Olive Garden - and she told me that once carbs continue to be eaten, hunger gets worse.) Amen to wait you said, “it’s a tool, not a miracle.” I’m just mentioning so that you’re wary of expecting that post-surgery will be easier bc you won’t be hungry. There’s a pretty good chance that you may experience hunger often. Your honesty about your feelings and difficulty show that you care deeply about making the decision that is right for you. I do think, as someone else mentioned, that having a conversation with your surgeon or even the nurses at the practice if your surgeon is unavailable could me a tremendous help. If you’ve “cheated” during your pre-surgery liquid diet, it’s important to let the surgeon know ahead of time. Like another member said this poses a danger to you and your surgeon bc your liver may not be small enough. Nobody wants to go through surgery only to find the surgery could not be completed. If you have “cheated” during this phase or need just a little more time to pull it together is there any way you could talk to your surgeon and ask if you could be given another month? Would this still be acceptable to insurance? And will it keep you from redoing everything? Whatever your decision, please keep your safety in mind and I wish you well. 🐈 -
How can you tell how much loose skin you have?
ebroms17 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi everyone! I'm 8 months out from my modified DS/SIPS surgery with Dr. Roslin at Lenox Hill in NYC. As of today, I'm down 91.8 lbs from my surgery date (7/17/2017) and 98.8 lbs from my HW. I'm currently 5'2" and 168.8 lbs. I know BMI is a little bit of BS, but according to my BMI at my weight and height, I'm still in the obese category - and I don't look obese anymore. I'm actually fitting in a size 8 / medium for the most part. I know the high end of health weight for my height is around 135, so that's my goal, but I've been wondering if I need to aim higher based on how much loose skin. I definitely have a nice little pooch and very intense chicken wings. Is there a way to tell or guesstimate how much of your excess weight is just loose skin? I want to make sure I don't lose too much and readjust my goal appropriately. Thanks in advance! -

Getting the Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery was the best decision i ever made in my lofe.
KatFight replied to StayMal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So, you’ve maintained your weight loss for the past five years then, right? That’s truly amazing. Anybody seeing you now would never guess that you were once obese. Your body literally restored itself through process and disciplined workouts. Was excess skin an issue (because it sure doesn’t look like it was)? I’ll bet you get a lot of second looks now...it’s a mind bender to wonder if those same people would give you the time of day when you first started out just bc your body was bigger. Your heart and soul are the same. You really shaped yourself into Mr. America. You’d have my vote. -
4 Days Post-op....feeling really depressed and lots of anxiety...
KatFight replied to DMF3296's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi. It’s actually not uncommon for some WLS patients to feel depressed or anxious after surgery. As I deal with both, my nurse practitioner has been monitoring me closely. So far I’ve been well. Over time, WLS surgery can help relieve depression. So, be gentle with yourself. It can feel overwhelming bc you want to do everything perfectly. I napped daily for weeks. My biggest focus was (and still is) getting protein, fluid, and moving. I certainly wasn’t close to my 69 grams of protein initial goal nor my fluids goal. In fact, I still work hard to get it in and my surgery was 12/28/17. I saw my surgeon today and she is very happy with my progress. Of course, if your exhaustion is severe, you may need to have your iron and b-12 levels checked. Rest assured that what you’re experiencing is not uncommon. You know your body and should be concerned, please call your surgeon. That’s what he/she is there for. I’m happy to hear that you’ve moved about. Your body needs rest too and it’s perfectly fine to give it what it needs. Sending you [emoji295]️ [emoji304] and [emoji882]. -
Over eating before surgery
angjade2 replied to beccaconaty87's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
With me during the 6 month process (I finished the process but now im switching surgery date from May to sooner) I ate fine all 6 months it’s now that I’m having problems eating everything in sight bc of the fear that I won’t be able to enjoy everything after surgery -
Well their claim is a bit outlandish and clearly falls in the "too good to be true" category. I would imagine that no food has 100% full absorption / 100% bio-availability, so when they make outlandish claims the burden of responsibility to support those claims falls on them. Here is their "study" supporting their claims http://www.musclegen.net/documents/geneproClinicalTrial.pdf (note its a small short term, small sample size, poorly controlled clinical train paid for by them). Personally I think their claims are 100% bs and wildly exaggerated. That said I dont think the product is bad for you, it is very much a protein supplement. That said its very likely that youre really only getting somewhere in the 11-15g range of protein per serving and absolutely not 30g. The TLDR: is basically Genepro is very likely giving you substantially less than 30g of ACTUAL protein per serving, which makes it overpriced and difficult to accurately track your macros. But if you dont mind overpaying for an easy to dissolve flavorless protein its probably just as fine as any other protein powder as a protein source. Youll just have to make an educated guess on how much protein youre consuming, and probably double their dosages to get that actual amount

Out With the Old--In With the New!
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I think it matters the most to get your protein in and let that determine how many meals? Here's what I'm doing to get 60g of protein daily: B1: decaff coffee and Premier Protein used as creamer (6oz of PP during this meal) = 10g P B2 (elevensies): Around 14g P L: Around 14g P AS: Around 12g P D: Around 14g P BS: None unless needed to make 60g P for the day, then more PP in decaff coffee. Hope that helps! I eat about every 3-4 hours-ish? -
No. I weighed 222.4lb at surgery. My 1st goal is 160lbs. I did RNY for some of the same reasons. I have pre-cancerous cells in my esoph and duodenum and gastritis (which 98% of us have). I am also a BC survivor. So RNY it was. And I'm doing fine. So will you.

Dr said to not take a whole pill bigger than a Bc pill. So I crush the protonix? Even though the labeling says not to crush it?? I’m confused!

I heard that the 30 mins before is bs. Very conflicting because on one hand water supposedly flows right through our stomachs but on the other hand we are told not to drink it because it will cause us to feel too full or push out the protein in our stomachs too fast. Which one is it? I think maybe the truth lies somewhere in between. I think a few small sips before eating on an empty stomach doesn’t matter. I think drinking a full glass of water and immediately starting to eat is a bad idea. I don’t think water needs 30 minutes to pass through our stomachs but I would give it at least a few minutes. There are so many opinions and misinformation regarding WLS aftercare. At the end of the day I think we all just need to do what works for us. Oh and eat protein first.

Yes, I am cranky at times, and a bit mouthier as my patience for bs has lessened considerably. I have had to take a walk, take a shower, take a nap, leave in the car, pet some fabric, etc and it passes. These are all physical motions - doing anything physical quiets the mind/mood.

16 yrs Banded, Now May have to revise to sleeve! HELP!
maygoddess replied to maygoddess's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thank you for sharing your story. If your advice worked, none of us would be having weight loss surgery! Sorry..a bit simplistic.."just watch your eating habits" LOL!! Food is one addiction that we cannot live without..and it is hard to just "eat right". The band was not meant to stop you from eating chips and shakes..it also doesn't make you want to eat kale and fish either. It limits food good or bad. I got the surgery mostly to keep it off rather than just to lose weight. I was sick of the 5% chance of keeping weight off you lose..those are bad odds. Unfortunately, when I was unfilled when they found the esophagus issue, I gained 30lbs in a month..I ate barely anything..I watched EVERY bit and sip I took..counted calories..was eating like 500 calories a day and worked out and gained 5lbs a day..it was a nonstop freight train. I am afraid when the band goes, I will gain more. I originally lost 130lbs with the band..gained 50 so far after the unfill..but have now stabilized. I have a fill but no port or tube..so the band is still doing what it supposed to do..keeping weight off..BUT still not helping with losing these 50lbs no matter what I do to "eat right". I do hope that works for you..sounds like you have resolved to just try and wing it like the rest of the mere mortals. I cannot risk gaining that weight with no way to lose it and most importantly keep it off long term. I went back to the surgical office locally today to ask the surgeon more questions. Looks like insurance requires ANYONE getting a new surgery..even if a revision..to jump through all the hoops...psych evals, dieting, etc etc..all the BS that is important for a brand NEW patient, but rediculous for someone banded for 16 years. So I am looking at possibly just paying out of pocket and going back to my surgeon in Mexico. He has more experience, he can do the removal/revision at same time..no hoops to jump through..a lot to consider..but just winging it again and just "watching my eating habits" never worked and won't at my age to stop the gain that will most likely happen nor get off what I gained. Good luck with your journey! -

People making decision difficult
FluffyChix replied to jiggyiggy120's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You are looking for external validation and for someone else to make this super-serious decision for you. That way, if you fail it won't be your fault--cuz it wasn't your decision to begin with and you'll claim that you had your own doubts all along. So I'ma call BS on this one and instead will say, seek your own truth. Make a pro-con list. Listen to your heart and your gut. Come to us for questions, research, experiences, etc--but don't come ask us to tell you what to do. Cuz opinions are like assholes. They are a dime a dozen and great supply. But sadly, nobody wants to see or hear 'em. You can DO this. Think for yourself. Do you!!! -
February bypass buddies?
FluffyChix replied to RunningLibrarian's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Keep in mind, you may need to verify your meal size with your doc or RD. Because when most people here 4-6oz, they start thinking weight--as in weighing on a scale. But, the reference they gave you still alludes to a volumetric measurement. 1oz by VOLUME (measure) = 2tbsp = 1/8cup by VOLUME = 1/4oz by weight 4oz by VOLUME (measure) = 8tbsp = 1/2cup by VOLUME = 2oz by weight 6oz by VOLUME (measure) = 12tbsp = 3/4cup by VOLUME = 3oz by weight ************** Conversely, most protein in it's pure/fluffy/cooked state, unweighted down by meat lube or other moisture additives like light or fat free mayo and dressings and sauces add up like this: 1oz protein by weight (then flaked, chopped fine, or pulled) = 2oz by VOLUME = 1/4c by VOLUME = 4tbsp 2oz protein by weight (then flaked, chopped fine, or pulled) = 4oz by VOLUME = 1/2c by VOLUME = 8tbsp ************** And then there's the whole "meat salad thing" like tuna salad, etc... 2oz tuna, salmon, canned chicken by weight (flaked, chopped, pulled) + 1tbsp low fat mayo/yogurt + 1/2tsp mustard + 1/2tsp dill relish = 1/4c by VOLUME = 4tbsp. It will weigh more than 2oz by weight because of the addition of the condiments. Fun and intriguing bs isn't it? -
I had mine in Dallas- total for everything plus a year of post op $10k. Insurance did not cover bc my BMI was 34 and I had no co-morbidity. No problems- everything went smoothly.
