  1. Not really sure even how to begin. I have been banded since June 2005. Had great success up until about one year ago. I went through a series of fills and unfills which culminated in a slip. I was completely unfilled from October last year until January of this year. I've played around with varying fill amounts since then Through this all, (from my low last summer) I've gained 16 pounds. Not too bad. I had a small fill at the beginning of August (went from 3.5cc to 4.5 cc in an 11cc). All has been going great...until yesterday. Had my normal lunch, crackers ff cream cheese, and wham...stucksville. Slimed quite a bit at work (that's always delightful) but felt pretty good by the time I went home. I took it pretty easy last night...Ice Cream for dinner..yea I know..., but that got stuck as well. Got up this morning, coffee went down ok. Got to work, had a slimfast, and there it sat, and sat and sat. Finally that came back up. I called the doc and they got me in right away for an unfill. My doc's office has always been super about getting me in right away. I immediately felt better. So, this is where I'm at now. My doc's office is submitting a request to my insurance company for removal of the lap band and revision to VSG. I was fortunate that my insurance covered the Lap Band this first time around. I've been doing some research on VSG and it seems like it might be a route I'd like to go. My doc also has said, that he will do all and anything he can to faciliate approval. Guess I'll have to wait and see what happens. Thanks all, feel better for having written this.

    food addict I'm not sure

I came to the conclusion that I am a food addict after reading several books These books also tell one how to deal with the addiction. Boiled down to the basics: one must avoid trigger foods just as an alcoholic must abstain from alcohol. The usual trigger foods are are sugar, flour. white potatoes, rice, and processed food. "Processed food" is anything in a bag or box in the center aisles of the supermarket. Shop the exterior aisles where one finds fresh produce, meats, poultry, dairy, and frozen vegetables. There is a withdrawal period that is uncomfortable, but after a couple of weeks the cravings for the trigger foods diminish. Unless one of the trigger foods is sitting right In front of me, I no longer have difficulty avoiding them. I have lost 93 lbs by cutting out these things, 70 lbs prior to RNy revision surgery and another 23 lbs to date post surgery, I recommend these books Food Junkies: Recovery from Food Addiction by Vera Tarman Weight Loss Surgery Does Not Treat Food Addiction by Connie Stapleton Why Diets Fail (Because you're Addicted to Sugar) by Nicole Avena & John Talbott

    Any Tijuana Sleevers?

I used OCC for my band in 2011. They were quite a bit more expensive for the revision than Dr Fernando Garcia. So I used him in May 2016 for VSG. I had a great experience, they took great care of me and the Hospital CER was new and state of the art.
  4. Has anyone had a revision after having roux n y? I’m seven years out and gaining weight...I’m ravenous and have gained 40 pounds...cannot make myself get back on track...need help badly! I can eat normal amounts now and don’t feel full...things that used to bother me no longer bother me like pasta.

    Need Advice

Even though it will be a tough conversation, and she probably won't want to hear what you have to say, you need to talk to her about getting professional help from a psychologist and a nutritionist. All of the revisions in the world aren't going to matter one bit if she doesn't change her relationship with food. The surgery allows for weight loss during the "honeymoon phase" pretty much regardless of one's eating habits. That changes soon. The majority of this journey is about the mental game. If she's eating all of that crap on a regular basis, she's losing that battle. Good luck. I know this isn't easy, but I'd definitely have that conversation before she puts her body (and your checkbook) through more trauma.

    Four weeks post op RNY

Rt that was the same thing I’m wondering I had the revision from sleeve to rny because of severe gerd
  7. Today, I am 3 weeks out from band to sleeve revision. My 3 week stall started at two weeks out, and I haven't moved since. I am a lightweight (didn't wait to gain all my band weight back when that went down the crapper) and only have another 20-30 lbs to goal. How long did your 3 week stall last? I wonder if I'm done losing already? If I am, so be it, my most pressing need was to make sure that I didn't keep gaining. Also, for reference, I'm eating mostly mushy foods, just starting to work in some actual meat. Yesterday I had turkey lunchmeat for the first time, today I had shredded chicken for the first time. Otherwise I'm doing yogurts, cottage cheese, string cheese, tuna salad, that type of thing. I generally get in my 60-64 oz of Water, and am usually in the 55 -60 g of Protein a day, without using any Protein shakes. Thoughts? How did other lightweights fare?
  8. Oh sorry and yes revision from band...
  9. Hi Everyone. My name is Cindy and I am waiting for my primary insurance to send their denial letter so my surgery can be scheduled. My primary insurance will not pay, but my secondary insurance will pay. Plus secondary insurance does not do pre-authorization letters. So, as soon as the denial letter is received from the primary insurance we can schedule my surgery. My surgeon said it will most likely be mid-May. I have thought of myself as being overweight most of my life. Looking back on it, I was a twig when I graduated from high school. It's just that those who were around me were so petite. I had one successful pregnancy 30 years ago and was never able to lose the excess weight I gained then. Over the years I have tried every diet, sensible and fad, that I could find with varying results. But every time I lost weight on a "diet" I would put it back on and then some when the "diet" was over or I got sick of it. Over the last 3-5 years my weight has been steadily creeping up and I am so tired of being tired and out of breath all the time. I want to be able to do things with my grand-children but I am not able to do much of anything for more than a few minutes at a time before I need to rest. I am winded just walking up one flight of stairs to our bedroom so I avoid having to up and down as much as possible. I started my surgical weight loss journey about 5 months ago. It took longer for me to decide this was really what I needed to do than it has to do all the prerequisite visits, tests, and screenings. I really wanted to get the gastric sleeve but it is excluded by my insurance, so I will be getting the by-pass instead. The reason I wanted the sleeve was to avoid the malabsorbsion (sp?) and to be able to continue taking my anti-inflammatories for my osteo-arthritis. However, I have made peace with having the bypass and having to make the commitment to be really careful to get the proper nutrients and supplements to keep my healthy; because that is what this is all about anyway. I want my life back. I am sick of living a half life. In February I joined a gym and hired a personal trainer. I have not lost any weight, though my body composition has improved, I have more lean and less fat than I did when I started exercising. The best thing about doing this is that I have found something that I love to do. I can't believe I would ever say that I love going to the gym and working out with a trainer. It is fantastic and I am really looking forward to the improvements I will see after I begin working out again after I am healed from the surgery. I am sure the that the walking that I will be doing during the healing process will get me ready for even more intense work outs than I have been able to do to this point. My husband had this same surgery 14 1/2 years ago. He never had the kind of support that is available today and is amazed at the amount of pre-surgical preparation and information that I am getting. He lost about 80 pounds when he had his surgery and over the years had put some of it back on. But since I have started my journey he has been using the things that I have been learning and has lost nearly 15 pounds since December. He is nearing his lowest post-surgical weight. I think he is even more excited about me having this surgery than I am. He is being very supportive. When I told my family back in January that I was considering having surgery they were all very supportive. My best friend, who is more like a sister than merely a friend, decided that it was time for her to have bariatric surgery as well. She had not heard of the gastric sleeve before, so as soon as I told her about it she started researching it for herself. Last month she flew to Mexico and had it done. When I talked with her several days ago she had lost a total of 29 pounds (including the pre-surgery weight loss). Anyway, I feel like I have a great support system in place. And I am SOOOO ready to make this change in my life and to make it a permanent change. It's funny, I have never felt so certain about, or committed to, any of my previous weight loss attempts. This is my year for change.
  10. I have been on my pre op diet for about six weeks and managed to lose about 20 lbs. But my scales have not moved hardly at all in the last 2 weeks...I mean maybe an ounce here or there but that's it. My pre op consists of 2 high Protein shakes and one meal of salad and lean meat. My thyroid tested within range so it can't be that. It's weird because I can see weight loss in my face and body and feel it in my clothes too. I'm due to have my bypass next week on the 29th and I'm hoping I'm still won't continue this stall. I expect I'll probably gain some weight due to anesthesia and Fluid retention. But I hope it won't continue too far out. It's probably just the affects of a VLCD.....agh! Did any of you guys have this problem? Xxx

    ANXIETY

Ok, first off, let me just say...RELAX SWEETHEART! BREATHE! SMILE! I myself have OCD, Severe Anxiety, PTSD, and chronic depression. I know exactly what you are talking about and more. I went through the swing of emotion and was super excited and then super scared, nervous, wanted to throw up and run away and call it all off, but i had the love and support of my family and friends, and had to keep telling myself how much better i will feel. This is a big step. It is also a new you and a new life. You will have these thoughts and feelings, but it is because you feel unsure of yourself or the "what ifs" All i can offer you is this piece of advice as someone who has been through this. 1. Make sure YOU are comfortable with your surgeon. Do they support you, Do they ask you questions, are they treating you with respect and not an assembly line patient "cut you open stitch you up" make sure they have EVERYTHING YOU NEED! 2. ASK QUESTIONS! If there is an emergency during the procedure, what are the chances are bleeding, are you comfortable with bloodless surgery (if you do not take blood transfusions) 3. Are there chances of it being an incomplete surgery? Bypass in particular Write down your questions for your surgeon and get one on one. If the surgeon cant answer ANY of these simple questions, then they don't have your best interest in mind. I hope this helps you. Remember: BREATHE AND RELAX. THIS IS ALL POSITIVE. A NEW YOU AND A FRESH START (if you're mentally ready) The surgery isn't the hard part. Not at all. It is the AFTER that is the hardest. Changing the way you think about food and your relationship with it will be the most hardest thing you will ever experience, but you will only find that out for yourself when you finally experience it firsthand. Some people, it is easier than others. For me, it was hard. I didn't realize how badly i missed food until after surgery. I know it won't be that long before i have solid food again, but the days just run together and seem so long. Getting a hobby and keeping your mind active is the best way to get your mind off things. Also, i strongly suggest in getting a good protein powder for shakes. I recommend Premier protein powder that has the most protein available with very little sugar. Also, PB Fit powder (peanut butter protein powder) for added protein. If you mix the chocolate protein powder with the peanut butter powder, it tastes similar to a russel stovers sugar free peanut butter cup in liquid form. Yummage! Anyhow. Hope this helps. 12. Did you have the sleeve or bypass?
  13. Hey! So can anyone who experienced dumping with a sleeve and revised to bypass and also experienced dumping with that tell me if it felt different? I’m currently sleeved and just found out the IBS I was diagnosed with after my surgery isn’t IBS after all and it’s actually dumping syndrome! I didn’t think sleevers dump so I was shocked but it totally makes sense now... anyway due to my other issue with GERD, I may need revision surgery.... sooo I’m curious, I hear a lot about bypass and dumping and know that it’s personal and not all patients dump and if they do it may be different triggers for everyone but if you experienced dumping while sleeved then after bypass, is it the same? Was it worse?
  14. FYI: My food intakes are from BariatricPal and thus I have not experienced dumping syndromes as a gastric bypass on Aug. 28, 2020. I make it a point to drink liquid 30 minutes after eating. I went to Crackle barrel and ate the Chicken pot pie and found that I felt over filled with no dumping syndrome. I made sure what I put into my mouth was moist. Anything dry, I avoided as instructed by Dr on my post op one month appt.
  15. Hi Baseballmom...Thank you for your kind words and concern. I went to the dietician today and we did a test whereas i step on a scale and it tells all sorts of info about my body (fat percentage; how many calories i should be eating; bmi; etc). Well, she discovered that I am doing everything right...the problem is my metabolic makeup. From what she explained to me, out of every 100 patients, there is always that "1" who has that weird metabolism...well, unfortunately, I am that "1" person. Ugh...frustrating and not much anyone can do for me. She thinks even a revision may be a waste of time! Oh well...at least I kno it wasnt me doin something wrong!
  16. It's been quite a journey so far successful band surgery 2012 then problems with my band and weight regain all bar 30lb. I am on the pre op diet of lean protein and no more than 40g of carbs. Surgery is 11 days away feeling nervous and excited. Have lost 10 on pre op diet so far. Have pdh diet protein for post op in strawberry and mint choc chip. Any other revision people out there how are you all doing x

    Bump

I recently had the gastric bypass and I’ve noticed that I have bump over my large incision. Is this where they put my separated stomach? Anyone else experience this?
  18. I started out wanting the band but chickened out, just wasn't ready. Two years went by and I decided to revisit WLS and went to a meeting at the Hosp near me. I was initially thinking bypass but the more I learned about the Sleeve the more I felt it was a better choice for me. I have a history of A-fib and the dumping syndrome can cause palpitations. Thus I didn't want to go there. I'm a big sugar junkie so I knew that aspect would be a struggle either way. That being said some of us sleevers still experience dumping syndrome if we eat too much sugar or high-fat food. For me it's a fine line with sugar which if I cross it I feel like crap and then I have to go crap! TMI, sorry! LOL! Anyway, I did have mild sleep apnea but none of the other health issues you mention but my starting weight was 325. I've lost 100 and I'm 6'1&3/4" tall so I am close to my goal weight. Many people reach normal weight ranges with the sleeve but my surgeon told my that I could expect to lose about 60-70% of my excess weight from the surgery alone. I have surpassed that and plan to keep going. All this being said, you have to decide what is right for you. Both options are good IMO. Good luck to you!
  19. Hey all! I’m 5 weeks post op and have been doing great, but I got my teeth cleaned yesterday and haven’t been feeling well since. Usually the dentist is an easy thing for me but this time my body aches and my digestive system is definitely unhappy. My pre-op info did not say anything about the dentist. Has anyone else had experiences like this? Did your info have a timeline for dental cleanings? Thanks, Breanne

why do we get acid reflux post op

I don't know that I would agree w/your Dr. I'm 5 wks out from band/revision and I've had NO issue with the reflux I had prior to surgery. In fact, he found a hiatal hernia & fixed it. He said that the reflux prob shouldn't be an issue any longer.

    slow loss?

I don’t remember how quickly I lost weight with my Gastric Sleeve 10 years ago, but I am losing fairly slowly with the bypass. Since I went on the pre-operation diet on April 30, I have lost about 9 kgs - nearly 20 lbs - but in the last couple of weeks, only about 1 kg per week. Not worried though - I am in this for the long haul. The doctor and dietician are telling me I may only lost another 7-8 kgs, but I plan on proving them wrong. I am currently just over 80 kgs (176 lbs) and my first goal is 75 kgs, but my actual goal is to get into the 60s. I’d like to be somewhere between 65-68 kgs (143-150 lbs). I will enjoy proving them wrong!
  23. From what WASa says, and I know she is very knowledgeable, the mini bypass is a bad surgery to get. Maybe you should send her a pm if she doesn't chime in on this thread.
  24. LindafromFL, thanks for your reply....I am doing research like crazy. I actually stopped posting on FB because I don't want to waste time that I could be gathering re wls!! I am reading all the threads on both the sleeve and bypass forum. May I ask if you and your husband have been able to get rid of medicine or cpap/bipap?

    Sleeve to Ryn...Help

You will need to talk to the surgeon about the length of the bypass and optimizing it for either additional weight loss or just maintaining your current weight. This *might* dictate how much additional weight you might lose.
