Memorial weekend/ bypass/ Help
tebowfan replied to tebowfan's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
To- James Marusek. Thank you so much for all the information!! I am going to do as you said and go to GNC for the flavored Protein Water. I also am glad u brought up the Vitamins and meds. I'll have to make a schedule. I do not want them to know I had the bypass surgery, so I'm thinking I'll say it was a hernia repair. It will be part truth. So ke e else said to tell them I had my gallbladder out. It is already out though. Thanks again for responding. I haven't had much success on getting responses/ feedback on here, but I'm not giving up. Congrats on being 11 months out as well. I can't wait to be 11 months out:) -

spencd1 replied to spencd1's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This is Deb, I'm back at work and doing fine. I get very tired (expected), and I'm having trouble with some back pain but doing great. I've lost 25 lbs. since November 27th and am very excited. The folks at work were very surprised by the weight loss as was I. I told everyone not to expect to see any difference, I surprised us all. I hope everyone is doing well and Happy New Year! -
Recipes for life after weight loss, revised and updated
jmg1263 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5 days post sugary, gastric bypass. It is NOT easy. I finally today am feeling a little bit better. I keep telling myself that this period is going to be HELL but follow the program and it will be ok. I had to meditate through the pain at times. Tomorrow I am going to begin with a 2000 step walk. I was feeling low today also but then I got a recipe book in the mail that really lifted my spirits. The food in it looks amazing. Really good looking stuff but prepared in a high Protein low calorie way. I have NOT read the entire book yet but I know the future will look brighter. I have not yet had a chance to read it but I did thumb through it. A GREAT looking pizza recipe in there and I can't wait to try it. Book is: recipes for after weight loss surgery, revised and updated by Margaret Furtado. There are so many amazing looking recipes in there. Pizza, Humus, Sausage and Lentil Soup, Latkes, crab cakes, stroganoff. Looks amazing and the book is loaded with pictures and lots of wonderful looking stuff. I am actually excited and it lifted my spirits. One example recipe is below. AGAIN, I have not read the entire book so I am not sure at what stage I can start this but it is promising. I was miserable but 5 days after surgery I am finally feeling better. Sharing one of the recipes in the book. Pita Pizza: 284 calories. 25.6 grams protein. Makes 4. 4 small 4 inch whole wheat pita breads. 1 can 6 0z, low sodium tomato paste 1 teaspoon dry oregano 1 teaspoon dry basil 1 teaspoon dried thyme 4 tablespoons grated parm cheese 1 cup cooked boneless skinless chicken breast cut into small cubes. Or, chicken italian sausage, or ground meat. 1/2 cup fresh slices mushrooms 1 can, 2.5 oz sliced black olives 3/4 cup (85g) shredded part skim mozzarella cheese Oven 375. Lightly spray a sheet pan with cooking spray. Put on all toppings and bake aprox 15 minutes. Picture of the pizzas look AMAZING. NOW, I have to say I have not read the entire book yet so I am not sure when this recipe can be used but it is good to know that down the road a healthy pizza is possible. Looking through this book raised my spirits. John -
I am new here and hoping I am doing this right! I am on the fourth of six months pre-op. At my last appointment, the surgeon said he was shooting for the end of April for my surgery date! I am still undecided on which surgery to go for, by gastric bypass is in the lead so far. If anyone can share their thoughts, it would be great. My reason for WLS Is my back. I will most likely need surgery in the very near future per my back specialist and need to lose a significant amount of weight first. I was 340 when I started this journey and am now at 304. Any thoughts?

A study published in JAMA concludes weight-loss surgery better than diet and exercise in treating type 2 diabetes. In the trial, 61 obese adults with diabetes were randomly assigned to one of two surgical procedures or intensive lifestyle intervention and followed for three years. Forty percent of those who had received a gastric bypass procedure and 29% who received a gastric band were considered in remission from diabetes and no longer needed to take medication after three years. In comparison, no one in the group who received intensive lifestyle intervention resolved their diabetes. http://www.foxnews.com/health/2015/07/02/weight-loss-surgery-better-than-diet-and-exercise-in-treating-type-2-diabetes/

I have has my band for 5 years with great success (-140) and very little problems. I haven't been to my doc in 3 years! (Didn't realize it had been that long). I have been struggling with burning stomach, some reflux, being able to eat too much, and weight gain ( about 20 lbs since November) I let all these things go for way too long I know! (Don't wait like me). I finally went in on Monday and they completely unfilled my band. She thinks I have just stretched my pouch. But I'm going in the morning for an upper gi to be sure. I'm hoping there is no major prob and a few weeks of unfill will fix it! Now I have to try to be a very good girl in the eating department. Thanks for letting me vent to people that understand all of this!

My insurance approved me for surgery. I want to choose the best surgery. My doctor would like me to lose 100lbs. I want to know which surgery is healthier. I only get two choices and that is the gastric sleeve or the gastric bypass is. I've done so much research and I just can't make up my mind. Help?!?!

I am three months post op and am just getting over a stomach bug with vomiting and diarrhea. It seems I can barely eat anything now, I fill up super fast and stay full for a really long time to the point that I am eating half of what I used to. Has anyone else had this for a few days afterwards? Is it normal? Is it almost like a pouch reset because I couldn't eat for a day and a half? (I am pushing fluids, just curious about food). Update - had my 3 mo post op appt and I am doing fine. I was told it can take a few extra days to get back to normal eating compared to before I had gastric bypass.

2 1/2 Years Out Update and Question Re Diabetes
mmcclure posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi everyone, Some of you may remember me and some may not, but I thought it would be a good time for an update on myself and my daughter. I also have a question regarding VSG and diabetes. I had VSG in November of 2010. My highest weight was 251. My lowest weight was 104 (too low for my 5'5" frame) and now I am holding steady between 108 - 112 (has been this low for over a year now). My regular doctor still thinks I am too thin, but my labs have been great so he isn't nagging me too much. My biggest problem other than what I address below is that I have a hard time finding clothes that are small enough (yeah, I know - stop complaining). My daughter had surgery the same day as I. Unfortunately, she developed a leak and was in the hospital for quite a long time. She has since lost over 200 pounds and feels terrific. She has new-found confidence (she is 23) and is much happier than she used to be. She has always been beautiful, but now the way she feels about herself makes her even more so. Now for my question. I went to my PCP on Friday and he is concerned because he said that my blood sugar could be going too low. I "had" type II diabetes but haven't been on any medication since the surgery. So, I got a new meter and have been checking my blood sugar levels. They have been about as perfect as they can get, with the exception of me gorging on a lot of candy last night (I'd like to say it was an experiment, but I love candy and eat too much of it, too often). About 1/2 hour to 1 hour after eating a lot of sugary candy, my blood glucose level was 179. Within another half hour, it came back down to 103. So technically, if I had waited until the 2-hour mark after eating, my glucose level would have been fine. I don't like the 179 though. I have been craving candy, especially in the evening. It is almost as if I am a junkie and have to have my fix. But, once I start eating it, I can't seem to stop until I brush my teeth before bed! I've always had a sweet tooth, but never this bad. My husband tells everyone that I have a "tootsie roll pop problem." Also, if I don't eat candy, I start losing weight again. (Yes, I've tried Protein or good carb Snacks.) Anyone with any insight on this issue? One theory I have thought about is either that my blood sugar is going low so I crave sweets to bring it back up or that my body goes after sweets because I am so thin and it is trying to get me to not lose anymore. Or, something I don't like to think about - I am tempting my diabetes to come back and need to kick the sugar habit asap! Oh, and one thing I neglected to say - my current weight also includes my extra skin, which my PCP figures is somewhere in the 10-12 pound range. So, I'm actually a lot thinner than the scales say. Thanks. Marilee Quote MultiQuote Edit Report -
I am almost one month post op from gastric bypass and been adjusting nicely. However, the last couple days I have been having an annoying pain right right beside my incision site. I'm hoping I am not developing a hernia or an infection. I've had a couple weeks pain free... is this normal? Sent from my SM-S920L using the BariatricPal App

Hi, I'm Erin, my gastric bypass was may 4th. I had some complications. A 1 hour surgery took 5.5 hours. My liver encompassed my entire abdominal cavity. Dr didn't know or missed. Was on 8 liters of oxygen a minute 24 hours a day because my liver was crushing everything and I was having troubles breathing. Preoperative I was on liquid diet two weeks. And my liver was still ginormous. So far in two weeks I've lost 25 pounds. Today I graduated to soft foods. Here's my question...... Will I forever hurt/be in pain/be uncomfortable? Dr says it was lucky she found my liver in the state it was, it can now begin to heal. She said how my liver was I'd died within a year. But.... I don't want to be in pain forever. Do you ever feel *normal*, no pain. I'm not permitted any pain meds due to them crossing the liver so basically I'm on my own with zero pain tolerance.. Advice? Experience? Thank you in advance. My band slipped twice and was finally removed in March of 2015. 12 months later I am 130 lbs heavier and pre-op for the bypass. My date was set for June 15th and I am so excited. It took a bit for me to make the decision to move forward because of all the mental and physical torture the band put me in the last two years I had it. Then without the band I felt like a failure and watched my weight come back. the 15th cannot come fast enough. I know it will be different this time!

I had rny bypass surgery a year and a half ago and I had a couple questions. First - other than the sutures in the small bowel and proximal stomach is there any reason I would have had actual surgical clips left in me - and not been told about it? Second I just had to have a ct scan done with contrast and my proximal stomach shows as highly prominent and measuring 9.6 x 6 cm. the er doctor at first thought this might be normal from a recent surgery but my surgery is far from recent so they weren't sure what to think...

Sat 25th April and nerves have kicked in
smiley84 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all, I'm taking the plunge and writing on here for the first time. It's been a great support already. I am booked in for a gastric bypass RNY on Saturday 25th April and nerves and excitement have kicked in. I'm a mother to a young child so that is playing a huge part in the nerves. I'm excited to be a healthier parent though. Currently at 265lb with a BMI of 47. Really unsure of what I'm expecting to lose, and although I have done the research I still feel unsure of what to expect following the surgery. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Any surgery buddies out there? Thank you. Phew I feel better for writing that down! X -
I'm just now able to eat pureed food. Now that I'm able to "eat" I'm learning to feel the pressure in my chest telling me to stop eating. It's hard to feel that sometimes then I overeat and it feels aweful!!!!! So my question is, did y'all feel this way and have a hard time knowing when to stop eating? It's only happened twice but my gosh It's awful. Btw I had gastric bypass.

Band to Bypass with low BMI - what are the real risks?
NewAngela replied to Melificent's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
After the first few months, or after, you can always take supplements to get more calories. At the end of it all, I would think you have a better chance of maintaining a "normal" BMI as opposed to the average weight loss of 60% or so excess weight. The main risk would be loosing to much fat and then loosing muscle as well, but gastric bypass patients intentionally don't have excess calories. High calorie supplements may be needed if you loose to much weight. Definitely better to do it at the time of band removal or soon after. I had the band removed due to slippage and complete obstruction and I gained over 100 pounds over 5 years or so. I just had bypass 6 weeks ago. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
James thank you so much. I'm hoping the mini will do the same as well. Would love to hear from a mini bypass patient.

I am pre op for a gastric bypass but wanted to ask those of you who have had surgery this question. I had my endoscopy today. They found hiatal hernia, irregular line and non-corrosive gastritis in the entire stomach. I know the hiatal hernia can be fixed at the same time I get the gastric bypass, but has anyone had either of the other two problems delay or stop gastric bypass?
