Weight stall - Insight/Encouragement needed
GradyCat replied to kelclrk's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Your body is wondering what the hell you just did to it. It went through a major trauma of surgery and is healing. Now you're feeding it way less than it's used to getting. It happens. It really is okay, I promise you. You're doing everything right. I can't explain the science to you, I just know it's real. For instance, I have been eating 650-800 calories for the past 12 days. For the first 5 days I lost weight. For the next 3 days, I GAINED weight. How the hell do you gain weight on 800 calories/day? But I did and I figured it was my body adjusting, plus I was eating green olives, which are high in sodium. So now fast forward two more days and it's slowly coming down again. Weight fluctuations are normal. Take it easy on yourself and take care and trust the process. 😀 -
Yes switch up your calories and do some short term fasting - Remember this is a long journey and no two weeks will be the same Go less calories on day and more the next It will help restart your body

Scared about actual surgery
bbjerseygirl replied to dogluvr's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Trust in your doctors. Anesthesia is scary but it is rare that there are problems. You go in they give you your IV and go over medical history - again. You may have to wait your turn. I went in, got on my gown, they put in IV and I waited and talked to the nurses. Doc went over procedure. I walked into surgery room and got on table. They put my arms out and said they were going to give me my meds and next thing I know I had a woman ask me if I was able to wake up. I said yes and next thing I knew I was in my room. Surgery was 45 mins and it felt like 2 seconds. It is like closing and opening your eyes. IF you are uncomfortable or need pain meds - ask. They will help you. Just stay calm and ask for help when needed and you will get it. The thing is to be patient and calm. Remember, your docs did all kinds of testing and made sure you were right for this surgery. You will be fine and before you know it, you will be 2 weeks post up. It goes that fast. Take care and I wish you the best. -
No one talks about. To much weightloss

I’m 2 plus years out of gastric bypass. I have lost all my weight plus some. According to the stats I’m under weight. I have ate absolute junk food to get my weight up. Just makes me feel like crap. Just to much sugar. I eat my fair share with in reason. My stomach seems not to be growing. So I can put more food in. I’m really starting to worry about other health issues that I tried to avoid by doing the surgery. I’m looking in healthy even I can see. When I’m 60 am I going to have issues maintaining or gaining then. I was not prepared for this. People are fully focused on how fast and how much. But not the bigger picture. I’m sure I’m not the only one dealing with this. People who are going thru this. I would like to here your opinion. -
Yes, you can have protein shakes on a low carb diet. You just need to pay attention to the carbs in them. Slim Fast has a protein shake with 25gm of carbs but they also make one with 3gm. When I'm home, I use EAS powder mixed with unsweetened almond milk for a total of 5 carbs. The only 'trick' to following a low carb diet is to understand that it is the carbs that cause the cravings. Even one bite of bread or potato or rice will start me on that craving path again. Protein and green vegies are all I eat now. .

Lap band over previous bypass surgery
Daisalana replied to darnell239's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not to be confused, I hear it said but I don't think people realize.. YOU DO HAVE TO PARTICIPATE. You really do. I am overfilled at the moment, waiting for my unfill. I don't know what proper restriction is suppose to feel like (hopefully MONDAY!!).. but.. at an overfilled stand point, I can't get the 'good foods' to go down. chicken, forget about it. Anything remotely healthy hurts. But chips, Snacks, ice cream? Not a problem. My solution for this, is I don't keep things in the house that would tempt me, because I can't resist temptation at home. Outside of my home, I'm pretty darn good.. but in my walls I get grazey feeling, especially right now when I can't eat right. So if I had them around, I could be eating all kinds of junk food with no problems. So you do have to do something about your eating habits. My solution for now is not to tempt myself. Before I was over-filled, I wasn't craving junk food.. I think I only crave it now since it's all I can get down. But if you have a serious tooth for junk, and you can't tell yourself no, I don't think the band will work well. Have to confront the demons first. That being said, I can't eat fast food anymore (over filled or not). I don't drink cokes (for fear of messing it up.. but again, something you could get around if you wanted to, and thus sabotaging your success). These are big changes for me, we ate fastfood at LEAST once a day pre-banding. And cokes, all day long. No WLS is a sure thing. It takes work. Takes changing your eating lifestyle. I do get hungry a lot, head hunger or what, I still am trying to decide. But when I eat, I can't eat a whole lot. -
If you haven't already - contact your doctor!! This is not normal. You may be dropping weight fast, but it's not healthy. You need to find out what is going on.

I might be premature on this

I don't cook, so I am an expert at eating out and keeping my goals in check. If you'll be on solid foods, you can go to a sandwich shop and get the lunchmeat and cheese rolled up into lettuce leaves, or chopped on a salad (I only ever really eat the meat and the cheese anyway). Every fast food place serves a burger on no bun. Hardees calls it a lowcarb burger. Some call it 'on the green'. Wendy's will serve any burger they sell in a dish with a leaf of lettuce, a tomato, and a knife and fork. Get a side salad and dig in. Agree with eating the insides of everything! Burritos, tacos, just open the tortilla and ask for a fork. I still love refried Beans and cheese. At restaurants, I stick to the soup menu or the appetizer menu. Ask for the lower fat versions, they are less likely to be breaded and deep fried and DO NOT be afraid to ask for it how you want it. They might say no but they might say sure, we can do that! Omelets are great, eggs are great, bacon and sausage is great. avoid pancakes, waffles, biscuits and the like. You won't be able to each much of it, then you're full but still hungry if that makes sense? it just pisses me off if I fill up too fast. You don't have to disclose your surgery to everyone you talk to but it does help people understand that you REALLY can't eat much. Also, many restaurants will let you order off the kids menu-- smaller portions for teh win! You will have leftovers. I always keep the Protein and dump everything else. i know good and well I am not going to eat that later. I almost never order drinks anymore unless I am taking them to go (lots of ice!). I have to wait at least 20 mins after I eat and I never get to it. -

I think with any of the surgeries you have to watch how fast and how much you eat. With bypass you have to worry about dumping syndrome so If you love sweets you will have a hard time with that surgery. I am not a candy lover, so it wasn't an issue for me. I went with the DS, which would be a good choice for you because there is no associated dumping syndrome. I will say that I am a month out and I am still experiencing nausea and vomiting daily. Trust me you wont have a problem with inhaling food because you have no room for it. Further into recovery you of course will be able to eat more, but you will have to use self control.

My dr.'s office says my paperwork looks good to be submitted to my insurance company. Now I have the "enviable" task of meeting the weight requirement. I need to gain about 15 lbs to meet the insurance requirements. I will wear weights of some kind, but in the meanwhile, I am "saying goodbye" to all of my fast food friends and snacking. I have been at the same weight for several years. I think my body wants to keep me there. It is hard to gain weight (amazing!) now. I am on new thyroid meds which may have something to do with it. My guess is, I will hit this weight again and plateau here when I start losing. I feel ready. All of this gorging is kind of making me sick of eating. I suppose that will help while I endure Bandster Hell! I look around me and I wonder - what is going to happen to all of the fat people (like me) around me? Obesity truly is an epidemic. Is there some biochemistry issue that is keeping all of us fat? One would think our bodies would resist being overweight - evolutionally. I know we are made to store fat for energy reserves, but this much? Maybe someday a scientist will figure it out. Until then, I'm with the band!

TO GET OR not get a fill? Please help me decide
imaluckydog commented on katieocean's blog entry in Blog 76052
I was in the same place a few months back. I had the same delima. I have had a total of three fills and I have refused the past two times as I am as full as I ever want to be. I was banded June 29th. It takes me forever to eat and Bread crispy and crusty are ok in very small amounts. Soft bread is a no go and has been from the start. Three fills did me in. I will toss the cookies if I eat too fast and do not chew well enough. I have learned well what I can and cannot eat. My last fill was just a very small amount and it was all I needed. I have taught myself the better eating habits and my weight has just fallen off and my energy has picked up. I must say I almost had some taken out but I just went slow for a few more days and everything settled down. I did feel deprived for a while but I got over it fast enough...You will know if you are tight enough that is for sure. It took a good 4 to 5 days after the 3rd fill to register and feel the tightness then I was like woops!!!! I had to slow down. I do not go back until Feb 22, I just pushed my next apt. out farther so I would not have to deal with it. I am hoping that by then I may need another. Your Dr. or NP will ask you questions and figure out if you need one a fill that is. I could have refused the third one but I figured a little would not hurt. I am Happy to say #3 has been fine for me. Best Wishes imaluckydog -

My name is Misty and I had the lapband surgery in March of this year. I made the decision to have surgery after I was dignosed with fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes. I never realized that by being fat I was doing so much damage to my liver. I am a mom of two boys 5 and 2 and I could not die and leave them without a mother and all my diets had never stuck. After some long thinking and praying I decided to have surgery. I live in Conway, AR so I used Dr Baker from Little Rock and he is great. I started this journey at 288.5 lbs and I am sad to say I am only down to 250.4 on my last appoitment on 11/7/2011. I have learned a lot along the way and continue to learn everyday. I realize that it is not how fast I loose the weight but that I continue to loose the weight and learn to eat differently and teach my children and husband good eating as well. The reason I have only lost 38 lbs is becuase of me and only me. Ok well it might have been those 2 months that I told the nurse I needed a bigger fill and she did not listen but I also did not exercise like I should during those first couple of months and I did not eat like I had promised myself I would. I am now at 9.2 with my fills and I am honestly full. I have lost about 10 lbs based on my scale at home since my visit on 11/7 but I never count it until I go back for my monthly appointments. I always get hungry again about 1-2 weeks before a fill but this time it seems different so maybe we found my "honey" spot. My husband is honestly shocked that I can live on the little amount of food I eat but I remind him that I eat to live now and no longer eat for enjoyment. I still struggle with eating slow and probably will for sometime as I change my brain but in the end I hope to be a healthy mom who can play and keep up with her kids..

I heard Oprah say that Spanx are all she every wears anymore. When she said that I ran out real fast & bought me some. I truly do love them!! It works like a girdle without "feeling" like a girdle. I can still breath & move, but my tummy is still held in. And yes, it keeps you from getting weggies!!! I don't wear them everyday, just the days when I have somewhere to go & want to look good. Try some!!

soon to be sleever. i have a lot of questions and concerns..can anyone help me?
kranky813 replied to TiffanyLM's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@@ssguthrie So one of the concerns I had was like you about throwing up or not being able to eat certain things. I again will say that everyone is different but at 4 months out (actually at about 2 months out) I could eat what ever I wanted and it didn't affect me. I laugh and say I have the stomach of steel My doc was shocked that I ate beef Jerky at 2 months out. Not that he didn't want me to have it but that I handled it very well. I am not one to throw up either. If I eat too much I do not throw up. Now that being said I will also say that I have made myself throw up 2 times because I ate one bite too many. It was a very uncomfortable feeling where the food felt like it was stuck in my esophagus and the only way to make it feel better was to vomit. I did and the feeling went away. It has only happened one other time. I learned my lesson to slow down and not eat so fast so my tummy can tell me when it's full instead of having one too many bites. Skin... aaahhh yes the dreaded loose skin. I have it, it's not horrible, you can't tell when my clothes are on. PS.. my boobs touch my belly button now I just feel like the loose skin is a reminder of what I used to do to myself and where I don't want to be again. I gained 100 pounds in 6 months when I was pregnant due to pre eclampsia... I have a road map of stretch marks and scars and loose skin. -

The last few weeks pre surgery last forever
Emily Jane replied to Emily Jane's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
The catheter only bothers me from a uti standpoint. I’d be under when they do it and they’d take it out shortly after. I have a baby bladder (had to pee 3 times in an hour before my endoscopy because of the IV fluids) so I wouldn’t be surprised by one. I just cringe at potentially getting a uti from it. 😬 I think my 7day liquid pre op fast will feel like an eternity. My boss is shocked I refuse to go to the work Halloween party on the 19th. Haha. Sir, I will be 5 days into a liquid diet. I don’t need the temptation of a party. 🙄🙄. I’ll just sit this one out thank you very much. 😂 -
The last few weeks pre surgery last forever
SorryNameTaken replied to Emily Jane's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I'm the opposite. It feels like I have hit the ground running and it is coming so stinking fast. I suspect the week of surgery will go really slow, but then again I have a ton of appointments that week, so it may go just as fast. @april042019 I'm afraid to ask about the catheter!! It completely freaks me out too. I'm a revision, so my surgery is going to be a bit longer than standard, so I'm just so sure they will say yes and I just don't think I want to know! 🤣 I haven't even met my surgeon because my original surgeon was booked out way into November and my insurance won't cover surgery starting November 1, so I had to switch to the other doctor in the practice. So naturally, most of my questions are about him or things about my pre-op testing. My x-ray showed I have a kidney stone just hanging around and no one told me, so I'd like to ask about that. My new doctor does robotic surgeries, so I want to know if mine is going to be robotic. And of course the important questions like, "Can I wear toenail polish?" I also want to know if I'll have an incision in my bellybutton, I can't stand the thought of that, it weirds me out so much. Whenever anything pops in my mind, I just write it down to take with me. Just do that and you'll surely have a good list of things to ask! -
First days of eating soft foods question
SAD HATTER posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, so. My surgeon's instructions are to eat small bites, and wait a while between bites. I am doing that. But how much did you guys eat in those first weeks after surgery. I have seen some do 1/4 cup, and I was afraid to go beyond like 1 TBSP or 2 TBSP, so I am not really sure if I am eating enough? If that makes sense. I have tried yogurt, refried Beans, and egg salad. I eat very little of it and notice no difference physically. Now, the Protein shakes... How long does it take you to finish an 8 oz one? I have yet to finish one. Wondering if theres something else I can do to get one down. I am afraid to drink too much too fast. I guess I have anxiety over messing up and doing it wrong. My followup is Tuesday with the surgeon. -
fear of vomiting
alilbittyna replied to christina353's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on Aug 25, 2010. I have not yet vomitted once. I have gotten stuck about 4 times, but remained calm. When and if you do get stuck the first thing you need to do is NOT panic. I have learned a lot from this forum and two of those things were that if you get stuck, DONT DRINK ANYTHING to try and get it to go down (this will just make you want to throw up worse)stand up and flap your left arm like a chicken (yes I did just say that) it has worked every time I have gotten stuck. The other one I heard was to keep papaya enzyme chewables at your reach at all times (purse, desk, home, car). It is a digestive aid. I got stuck last night and I just stood up kind of walking around my house breathing, flapping, took two enzyme pills and after about 10 min it all went down. The reason I got stuck was because I was eating too fast, didnt cut it small enough and did not chew long enough. You do need to pay attention. I refuse to throw up and I have not done it once yet. Not everyone throws up and it is not going to make you a belemic if you get this surgery. You just need to pay attention to what and how you are eating and you wont get stuck and you wont throw up! -
I have been one of those ppl who could eat everything - until I went for sushi at lunch - I don't think I can eat sticky rice - now mind you I eat jasimine rice every night with dinner - but today - got stuck-! either I ate too fast slight possibility - or didn't chew - again slight possibility but omw I was stuck - so I don't think I will be having sushi anytime soon
-
i know what you mean about missing eating...i still have to cook for my husband and son..man it's hard to serve them their food and me pouring my shake but when i look at the scale it makes it worth it. i'm glad you don't have to go back to work right away!! I'm fortunate enough to be able to stay home...so hopefully i recover fast. keep on keeping on girl!! you are doin great!

How was the drain removal? I am so freaked out by the thought of drains! Do they pull them out slowly? Fast? Do they have to stitch up where they are pulled out from?
