  1. I can't find the thread where we were discussing this, but I'll post it here and maybe anyone interested will find it. It's easy to make and freezes well; I used to use it a lot. My favorite ways were to make pepper steak with it or to bread it with egg and cornmeal and spices and fry it (haven't done fried anything for several years now, but I loved it). Vital wheat gluten is available at natural food stores or in most grocery stores in the section with flours. Nutritional yeast is available at natural foods stores. Blend in blender and then pour into a mixing bowl: 2 c. water 1 t. salt 3/4 c. raw oatmeal 2 T. soy sauce 2 T nutritional yeast Stir in: 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 c. vital wheat gluten (1 cup first and then in 1/2-cup increments) It will get very stiff and form a ball. Let stand 20 minutes. Form into a roll and slice or just pat into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick and cut into squares. "Beef" Broth: 10 c. water 8 ounces tomato sauce 1/2 c. soy sauce 2 T. onion powder 3 T. nutritional yeast flakes Bring broth ingredients to boil in a large saucepan. Drop the pieces of seitan into the broth and let cook at a low boil until the pieces are tender--usually about 1 1/2-3 hours. Will keep a week in refrigerator or can be frozen in the broth for future use. For a "Chicken" Broth: 12 c. water 3 T. poultry seasoning 4 T nutritional yeast 1/2 c. soy sauce 1 large onion, sliced 3 bay leaves These can be used in most recipes in place of meat...can even be ground up and used as "hamburger" Emily

    Failing already

Thank you everyone! You kept me motivated throughout the rest of the day yesterday & this morning. It's so damn hard to stop letting food control me. I literally have to look at motivational quotes when I think of eating something that I'm not supposed to. I'm eating low carb and being a vegetarian... it's even less options, but worth it! Thanks again ♡♡♡ Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Diet or Moderation

It's funny....I keep reading stuff like this.....people saying they eat what they want, but they eat Protein first, stay within reasonable calories and make good decisions most of the time, and they call that moderation. Problem is, that sounds exactly like what the strict dieters do as well. The strict dieters just come down harder on themselves when their "most of the time" isn't "all of the time." I know cause that was/is me. I came down hard on myself for not being perfect. I tried, but it didn't always work. But I still try because I'm one of those that cannot stand on the side of that slippery slope. I fall....right down the carb binging rabbit hole. Other people are fine with it and do very well. I've heard people say I still have food issues. Not directly to me, but they describe abstaining from certain foods as "food issues." Does a vegetarian have "food issues?" Do they need therapy? If not, then I think I'm okay. I see no difference in my abstinence from starches and a vegetarians abstinence from ribeye steak. It makes me feel better to not eat those foods. And btw...another big distinction that needs to be made....the huge difference between carbs and starches. One is healthy....one is not as healthy. We all know which yet for some reason they share the same name. It's unfair because a bowl of broccoli is oh so good for you. But a bowl of Pasta turns my stomach....although there was a time it didn't. So....I don't know if I answered the question, but that's where I stand. And my real point is this..... I truly believe that the strict dieters and the moderation folks are much closer to each other than most will admit. They argue and clash, but when you look at what they're eating...90% of it is the same.

    Meat During Mushies?

Hello everyone. I am dreaming about my mushie phase that I will be transferring to next week. I have been a vegetarian for the past 4 years and have decided to allow chicken and fish into my diet because I don't like soy and won't get the large amount of Protein I need by eating chick peas. I was wondering if you knew how to prepare chicken/fish so I can eat it during the mushies? Also I read deli meat is allowed, do you have to puree it or can you just roll and chew? Thanks
  10. I'm vegetarian and my doctor still required protein from day 1. I was given ProSource Nocarb liquid protein in the hospital. My doctor wanted me aiming for that minimum of 60 grams of protein from the very beginning.

    What Are Your Food Ruts?

Well, I drink a protein shake EVERY morning. Mainly because my stomach is so tight in the morning I can't handle food. Trust me I tried two days ago and it didn't go well. I do like to switch it up for lunch and dinner though. I have some main "snack" type foods I eat if I can fit them into my tracker for the day like the kind bar. I try not to eat processed foods to often but I was stuck on the new meat and cheese roll-ups they sale. They are easy to cut up on some shredded lettuce for lunch. So at times I get in food ruts but I usually get sick of whatever it is. I have issues with changing my complete diet up like one week I was just juicing, the next week I was back to "normal" and then I was "vegetarian" for a week and then when I feel like my stomach is being stressed I will switch back to a few days of only protein shakes and a light dinner like today to give my stomach a rest. I'm all over the place but it works.

    high protein snacks?

I can't find any scientific sources that imply roasted nuts and seeds are devoid of nutritional value. As a vegetarian, my nutritionist recommends them as an additional protein and fat source. Can you send me your scientific sources pretty please? Obviously, if I'm better off eating doritos I would prefer to know before snack time!

    Vegetarian/Vegan?

If you are not vegan, milk, cheese, yogurt etc are must haves If you are, look for soy/rice versions. Than invest in Quinoa- excellent Protein, legumes, tofu, vegetarian versions of meat (like vegan dogs/burgers), nuts, and making hummus. Start tuning into the nutrition labels and you'll be surprised to see a portion of peas can be as much as 8g of protein and brocolli is 6g. Add those kind of veggies to something like tofu and you got yourself a meal! Protein shakes and/or additives are also helpful when you are starting out and getting your barrings on how to concoct a protein packed veggie meal.

    Vegetarian/Vegan?

I'm a vegetarian now, well since April. I was one 20 years ago as well for about a decade. Anyway- I still have milk and eggs, so I don't fall into the vegan category. I find Protein drinks to be a good thing- at least one a day for me. Other than that, eggs (I have backyard chickens so I get fresh eggs). There's a peanut powder, PB2, that's fairly high in protein and lower in fat that's easy to flavor things with. Other than that the standard tofu, tempeh, lentils. In a bind I'll have a boca burger. cheese is another good one for me- cottage cheese with balsamic vinegar and spices. Spinach is good too- but in order to get enough protein from it you'd have to juice a bag or bunch of it.

One Year Later, 86 Pounds Gone

Thanks all my sleevie friends! Thank you for everything! I am a vegetarian because I have been working for years to decrease the suffering I add to others life. Animals or people. Any sentient being. I am not always successful, but I'm working on it. Years ago I asked myself, "what can I do with the skills and talents I have, to benefit or at least not add suffering to others?" And my life has been moving slowly towards that. I just figure, its hard to love animals and eat them at the same time. (I do love how meat tastes, I was raised on it, but really, how good it tastes is not worth tossing my wish for their happiness) I don't judge others for where they are, I can only try to get in touch with my own 'destiny'. Perhaps a longer answer then you ever wanted to hear! Thats it in a nutshell. I love vegetables too, and one of my hobbies is making fake meat, which is getting pretty good and tasty if I do say so myself. Pass the BBQ sauce!

    Need help with protein

I have a difficult time with the "milky" looking Protein powders and decided to try the clear Isopure Zero Carb drinks instead. They still have whey isolate protein in them, but you can see through them and for some reason they are going over so much better. I'm hoping I can handle the powders again soon and plan to reintroduce them in a week or so. I also had the heart pounding following meals/protein drinks shortly after surgery -- I'm only two weeks out, but it has gone away completely. I don't think I was dumping. I'm extremely conscious of the number of carbohydrates (not just the sugars on the label, but how many grams of carb are in each item) I consume. I'm a vegetarian, so many of my protein sources have carbohydrates in them (like refried fat free Beans and tofu). I never take in more than 15 grams of carb total per meal and it seems to be working for me so far. That is about how many carbs are in half a cup of anything carb-containing that does not have added sugar it seems. I wanted to ask -- are you using whey isolate or regular whey Protein Powder? The isolate has little to no lactose in it, but regular whey does have lactose. I don't know if that would make a difference to you or not in how your body processes the protein if you were to switch to an isolate if you don't already use one. Or, perhaps, pick up some Lactaid and see if taking that enzyme helps you if the problem is lactose intolerance. I also find that, if I eat too fast, my body responds with the rapid heart rate, hiccupping, and some slight pain in the center of my chest (over my sternum). Are you still on full liquids or are you transitioning into purees now? It was easier for me once I started purees and it was especially better for me when I eat soy instead of dairy as a protein source. My body tolerates soy extremely well, but I get hot and heart poundings (and diarrhea -- sorry, I know it's gross) with dairy. Good luck getting this figured out! I don't know if anything I said helps at all, but I do wish you the best!
  19. You are two days ahead of me (lap band to RNY) and you are right--it's worse than you expect but I now feel I have turned the corner and just might live...😁 But dang, your surgeon is really aggressive on your post op diet. I'm one week out and overjoyed that I get to eat cottage cheese and watered down mashed taters. I can add meat at week three, but since I'm a vegetarian that's no help. I can eat 1/2 an egg at three weeks, though...and I'm so happy I'm cackling!

I find no joy in eating

Nope, still love eating only now I like the challenge of packing good nutrition and taste into a smaller portion. I never had the luxury of not thinking about what I was eating. I've had food allergies and been a vegetarian for far too long for that. Not paying attention could be lethal for me.

    Nutrition requirements

I only had one 2 or 3 hour nutrition class to take. They discussed portion sizes, the importance of drinking water/fluids, to get isolates, not concentrates and recommendations on things like getting smaller utensils and plates. However I met with the nutritionist at every pre-op appointment (3 in total) and I continue to meet with her at every post-op appointment. She always reviews my food log and offers feedback. Pre-op the recommendations I was given were regarding finding a Protein drink that met my dietary challenges (Vegetarian and severe food allergies), to keep my calories under 1200 and increase my protein intake. Post-op the discussion surrounded how many calories I should be eating at various stages as spelled out in my program guidebook. Carbs were never discussed and the only mention of sugars was to keep them low.

    Any Vegetarian Sleevers? Spicy food?

I hope you do! If you'd like to try a very mild, somewhat sweet authentic curry...try my Vegetarian (Vegan) Korma. It is hands down my most popular recipe on the blog. I think your kids would even like it! To thin it down, just add Water until you get to the consistency you'd like. To up the Protein, add legumes, Beans, paneer, tofu...even chicken or shrimp would be okay in it too. haha...sorry if I sound like a curry snob. The truth is, I kind of am. LOL Actually, I'm super passionate about Indian cuisine...and just want people to enjoy it. So often people tell me they hate curry. I ask them what kind they've had and they'll tell me something from the Chinese buffet or something made at home using curry powder. I've turned many of my friends (and complete strangers) from absolute curry haters into curry fanatics! I checked out your blog, by the way. Nice progress! I keep neglecting my VSG blog more than I should, but you've inspired me to update today!

    chicken~

I have been a vegetarian for the past 6 years, however, since getting my band I have had to add adjust, so I tried adding chicken and no matter what I do, how I cook it or how I coat it it gets stuck horribly! I did try an extremely small piece of very tender steak at a resturaunt from my husbands plate about a month ago before my latest fill and it was ok, but as a rule I don't eat red meat (even before becoming vegetarian) I basically just eat lots of tender fish instead

    TMI? No such thing.

You know, I've thought about this for awhile after reading so many struggle. I think more research needs to be done on the post-WLS nutrition plan, particularly looking at whether we really need all of the Protein. Now it's probably necessary right after surgery (and in your case BV since you are adding so much lean muscle mass), but I wonder at what point in the process does the "protein first" mentality need to end? I had major issues in this department for the first few weeks. My surgeon advocates for a mostly vegetarian/vegan diet, so once I got to solid foods it has been smooth sailing ever since. I eat very clean... lots of raw fruits and veggies at every meal so with all of the fiber I consume, it's no wonder I'm good.
